Is This The Coolest News From Last Night's Oscars?? Keanu Says BILL & TED May Party On!!
Merrick here...
MTV caught up with Keanu Reeves on the Oscar's red carpet last night - their discussion turned to BILL & TED.
While it's hard to completely read Reeves in this clip, he's saying (seriously, but with a smile?) there's still a possibility of a third film in that series. The below embed originates HERE.
This is actually not a terribly new notion - Keanu's been talking up a third BILL & TED movie for a while now. His hope is to reunite with co-star Alex Winter in a film that would catch-up with the characters as adults (as much as you can use the world "adult" in association with Bill or Ted). What would be newsworthy here is that Keanu might now be doing more than just talking about it...unless he's totally yanking MTV's chain, dude.
I hold a mammoth spot in my heart for these films...the first one in particular...and gotta say I don't mind this concept at all. The lunacy of the franchise as a whole can easily support a concept in which our "grown-up" heroes struggle to cope with the real world while facing non-triumphant obstacles and enemies of a quantum/metaphysical nature. Whoa. The result could be most bodacious.
If you've never seen BILL & TED'S BOGUS JOURNEY, check out this DIE HARD 2's William Sadler as The Grim Reaper.
I've spoken to several educators - including an assistant principal at a top-ranking school - who strongly urge their staff and associates to watch the first film (BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE). Seems that, within all of the movie's tripped-out insanity, there are sublime truths to be found about the ways kids view their lives and worlds. These educators use the B&T movies as something of a training tool, and I can't say I disagree with their interpretations.
We'll see what comes of this...

Heh.
-
Great sequel.
-
Am I first !!? And on a Bill & Ted story....
I think I just lost my mess! -
not even close.
-
Two films defined my 80's youth more than any others, and they are Karate Kid and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Of the countless films I saw that decade, those two have always stuck with me and I would love to see B&T come back and deal with some more royal ugly dudes!
-
But the first was a blast. George Carlin providing a time-travelling phone booth to a couple of stoners (although, I don't actually recall either partaking of any weed during the movies). It was that fine line between idiocy and genius. Sixty-nine dudes.
-
whoa.
-
And "Bogus Journey" really is genius, especially Death.
-
Yes, way. Would love to see this happen.
-
Wouldn't mind seeing a third one, I actually think Bill & Ted is like the under appreciated Back to the Future and, like BTTF, has a second film that's as good, if not better (at least in B&T's case) as the first.
-
...said something derogatory about Keanu Reeves' acting skills in an interview I saw once, like it was "just his looks got him where he is" sort of thing (although I'd probably agree with that - Alex Winter himself was the really engaging, comedic part of the duo in the Bill & Ted films) but maybe he was actually kidding around and just pulling Keanu's chain.
-
Wouldn't mind seeing a third one, I actually think Bill & Ted is like the under appreciated Back to the Future and, like BTTF, has a second film that's as good, if not better (at least in B&T's case) as the first.
-
Keanu should just make a Hellblazer movie.
-
I mean, I know he hasn't had a hit in awhile, but Jesus, a middle-aged Bill & Ted? That would be like George Clooney doing a sequel to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
-
"Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure was made in 1989; it hardly qualifies as an eighties movie at all- and certainly doesn't register in my own memory as an eighties movie. And I should know, I'm fucking old.
-
What would the third film be about?

Excellent Adventure is good fun, Bogus Journey is truly awesome
by catothecensor
I love Bogus Journey so fucking much.
-
I always the the best concept for this movie sees their kids as the actual chosen two, and some error along the way had mixed them up with their Fathers. I tell ya though, without Rufus...he would be missed.
-
Is Hollywood completely run by late 20's/early 30's fanboys with mental deficiencies now? That's the only explanation for another Bill & Ted movie. And the Red Dawn. And Police Academy. And Clash of the Titans. And A Nightmare on Elm Street. And Fright Night. Oh, and Drop Dead Fred(!). And on and on and on.
-
I love the Bill & Ted movies. A sequel would be EXCELLENT!!
But please, PLEASE - don't go the reboot route. Keep the original cast and don't pass the torch on to their kids. -
I am ALL for this. Part 2 holds a special part in my heart too! And I aint fucking kidding.
-
For the 2nd one. Had some clever stuff in it, but Station was annoying. However, I have always wanted to see more of these two characters. Bring on the 3rd!
-
...written and drawn by Evan Dorkin. Classic Marvel comics from the early 90's, now available in two paperback volumes. Get Marvel back issues if you can, 'cause it's in four-press color. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures series is classic, but it seemed to have fizzled out after only two movies. George Carlin is dead and Alex Winter is MIA, probably snorting cocaine in a dumpy apartment. Here's hoping Bill & Ted 3rd movie will be as good as the first two, because 1988 and 1991 movies are memorable for a child of the 80's. Bill & Ted Saturday morning cartoon is groovy, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iv82iJ_MT4
-
If George Carlin was still alive and every single cast member was lined up to do another one it wouldn't make it right. This is not something that should happen. This should never see the light of day. The first two were outstanding stupidity and a lot of fun. There's nothing more to be said here though. There wasn't anything left to say halfway through the second one now that I think about it. It was fun and it was entertaining and it needs to stay in the past. It would be preferably to reboot the damn thing before trying to cram a third one in with Bill & Ted as adults and even that is a shitty idea.
-
Where has Alex Winter been anyway? I haven't seen him since the Lost Boys?
-
the best bit in the whole of the two bill & ted movies is the bit where the evil robot us's reveal themselves and threaten the real bill & ted, and then the evil robot us's do the air guitar solo and the real bill & ted do the air guitar solo along with them.
-
I saw the second one in the theater and thought it was hilarious. When it came out on video a few months later my friends and I instantly rented it. For some reason, it totally missed the mark watching it the second time. Bogus Journey doesn't have the replay value the first one had.
-
I'd watch it for sure. But air guitar and dude-isms...we are in the generic electro-pop age now.
-
coming soon
-
He did the live action Ben 10 movies.
I call 'Bill And Ted's Bodacious Trip'. Cheque please. -
have it take place in this "future with peace", where they are reverred, and have them travel back in time to 2010.Boom, that one's free hollywood.
-
The two quintessential surfer actors of all time co-starring in Bill and Ted would be a monumentally horrible movie, but in such a great way!!!! Fucking do it!!!! And if not, I'll just keep dreaming about it!!!!!!
-
But I know I'll only end up missing Rufus. I bet they'll end up getting Ricky Gervais or someone to replace him...
-
nuff said.GREENLIGHT IMMEDIATELY hollywood.
-
Death made the 2nd movie. I thought it was genius that when they had the chance to battle Death in any competition, they chose board games and foozeball. "You have sunk my battleship!" "Excellent!" "BEST 3 out of 5!!!". You also had to love their wacky use of temporal mechanics.
-
I never got that. I think Bill and Ted 2 is way funnier then the first one until they get done talking to god. Then it goes downhill hard, and I don't fucking get the station shit. "station!" WTF?! But everything else makes me laugh. The hell shit is really funny as is their evil robot dopplegangers.
-
Dude...turn in your geek creds immediately. Wayne's World is directly influenced by B&TEA. Either that or it directly ripped off B&TEA. Either way, WW is the face to B&TEA's ass any way you slice it.And yes, Alex Winter is the more talented of the duo, check out anything he's done to see (Freaked with Randy Quaid comes to mind plus he did a comedy show on some channel back in the day)...
-
2 points.
-
Because this isn't news, that was obviously Keanu just riffing with an interview, but out of curiosity I looked up Winter's on IMDB, and he's directing a remake of The Gate. There's a movie I vaguely remember seeing as a kid and being freaked the hell out, though at this point I can't recollect even the story. I only remember the hand with the eyeball.
-
IMDB.com google it.
-
Station.
-
Keanu was just yanking MTV's chain. He's spent the last two decades trying to establish humself as a "credible" actor, so I doubt he's going to wreck all that now. And do we really want to see two fortysomething men acting like doofs? Thre have been enough kidadult films made to last three lifetimes.
-

-
Is a word not unlike "dude" in that it can have a few different meanings. Some simultaneously.1. Station was/were the "greatest scientists in the Universe"2. "Station" can be substituted for "This is fun!" or "Yes." or "I'm here." or "Let's go." or "I'm fine." and a few other similar variations.

I could get behind that. I was already in my 30's when the first one came out, but remember thinking that they didn't make fun movies like that when I was a teen. Thermopolis' Revenge!
-
Is indeed underrated but it's also ass in many ways too. Basically, anything the Evil Robot Bill&Ted do or say is the best part. The Grim Reaper sucks really bad after they go to Heaven. The ending is way too corny and over the top (a ZZ top beard? wtf?) and I never understood why they changed the future clothes to that primary colored foam-rubber puffy shit instead of the kewl weird hair and shiny shirts from the first one.Alex Winter really shines in BJ too but someone needed to reign in the Reaper...it became caricature-like at some point. Evil Bill and Ted are the best thing in that movie without a doubt. Especially Evil Bill.
-
I need this movie in my life. Bring it on!
-
how much you wanna bet it will be Bill & Ted helping their kids do a history report?? You've got a new Bill & Ted for the kiddies.. and us 30 somethings are not becoming the sought-after demographic anymore.. and also because every movie needs to be a franchise!!!
-
Don't get sucked under, Beeth Oven...

-
a Midnight Run sequel?? oh.. right.. well, with the success of Tron, lots of studios are going to go back to the well and make sequels to 80's movies.. like the long-awaited sequel to Mack and Me.. or Spaceballs 2! or Harry and the Hendersons 2: Live Free or Die Harry.

A very large ufo comes to earth. Every damn device on earth with a speaker on it starts playing a unknown rock song. It's obviously coming from the ship. A strange smaller ufo exits the ship and lands on earth. A door slides open and a ramp is projected onto the ground. A flashing dual person icon appears above the door. The government sends two soldiers into the ship. The ramp carries them to the entrance of the door. The ramp stops. A scanner device pops out of the door. It laser scans the two soldiers. A projected ghost face of Bill and Ted is projected over theirs- they don't match. The scanner turns red- it shots out a different colored laser that vaporizes the soldiers. The ships door slams shut. A video image begins to play on it's surface. It's a clip of Bill and Ted from Wyld Stallions music video. The video stops. A countdown sequence begins. We figure out pretty quick that the aliens want Bill and Ted. Problem is they died in a tornado several decades ago. Seem our boys never became the future world peace icons they were supposed to become. At the height of their career the grunge movement came into being and the Wyld Stallions along with many other excellent rock bands of the 80's went bankrupt. The boys lost everything including the babes and their kids. We cut to the past the boys are living in a trailer park and working at a Circle K. We spend a day with them seeing how much their life sucks. Late at night while smoking pot on the roof of their trailer, We see something fall out of the sky. It hits their neighbors trailer. The boys check it out. A phone booth is sitting in the living room. A number is written on the window. They look at each other they get in and dial up. The adventure begins.

And it's pretty clear you're drumming up movie news that doesn't exist.

That's possibly the most fucked up thing (in a good way) that I've heard in ages.
-
If you were to pick a Keanu Reeves film to gain insight into students, I'd choose Permanent Record first. I am a high school teacher and counselor and I was totally blown away by how amazing he was as a friend trying to understand his best friend's suicide!
-
Just alittle trivia..."Billy The Kid" was played by actor Dan Shor who also starred as "RAM" in the original TRON film ^_^
-
I dunno. Seems pretty earnest to me. When a man says he isn't joking, he probably isn't.
-
the 3rd "Bill & Ted", if memory serves...
-
Ray, only a moron would say that a film in 1989, which is still the 80's, doesn't count as an 80's movie, much less try to tell someone else that their childhood memories are invalid. You fucking idiot.
-
The time has now passed. Should have done it when they had the chance.
-
Freud and the corn dog still cracks me up.
-
C'mon...
-
The best idea would be that someone went back in time and altered their past so they fail their history report. Fast forward to when they're 40 and living boring mundane lives. A Rufus like character visits them, tells them what's going down and they have to fix it on their Most Triumphant Experence!!!!
-
...and I just quoted that "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" line to a lady who works there last night. :)
-
They need to continue with the time travel stuff. That was much cooler than the heaven and hell stuff.
-
I think parallel dimensions would be a logical next step. Bill and Ted could interact with bizarre versions of themselves, redneck Bill and Ted, market trader Bill & Ted, etc.
-
If they want to give me more awesome than I am all for it! Oh and for all the people wondering what happened to Alex Winter: Did any of you see the movie he directed Freaked? I haven't seen it since the mid 90's so I can't say whether I really like it or not, but it did have Keanu Reeves as a dog man or something. Weird movie!
-
than Keanu was joking, needs to shoot themselves in the face. You don't belong living on this earth if your perception skills are that fucking dull and weak
-
Of all the proposed ideas in this thread, his has my vote.
-
Im a dork though.
-
but it really focused on time travel, and featured a future San Dimas that had turned into hell.
what was that about biodome?? -
Yes, it's true. Bio-Dome's script was borrowed very heavily from the unproduced B&T3 script. Look it up.
-
Ive said it before that's what I think this movie should be called...we NEED a third film - party on dudes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i fucking hated that movie. It looked like it cost about twice too much to make

Yeah, I hear it's terrible so not planning to any time soon. Never saw it.

It was one of Pauly's best movies, though that's not saying much.Didn't know it borrowered from an unproduced B&T 3 script though. Where can I read more about that?

half-serious, floating the notion to see if it generates buzz.

By the time they're adults, aren't Wyld Stallions the source of all wisdom and knowledge on the planet?
Seems that would be a pretty lousy environment for a story.
Unless maybe they have to martyr themselves in some great conflagration and it's only their descendants who discover their genius. -

Didn't BILL and TED save the world already in part 2?
by gibsonusa returns
The only way I can see Bill & Ted 3 as interesting is if they pull a Back to the Future Part II....this is, today's Bill & Ted go back to 1988 and operate around the events of Excellent Adventure. Like, when 1988 Bill & Ted are talking to Rufus outside the convenience mart, today's Bill & Ted are sneaking behind the back of the building. That kind of thing. That would be fun.
-
Or something..
Party on dudes!! -
I love the first movie. The soundtrack rocks! I'm up for a third!
-
"Iron Man, Iron Man, does anything that an iron can ..." Sadly, one moment of superhero-confusion-based genius and Kylie Minogue do not a great movie make.
-
Actually the guy that played Socrates is long dead. I was always kinda bummed out that so many of the cool characters from the first film never appeared in Bogus Journey. And Rufus was essentially a cameo. And now, Rufus can't be in part Three. Too bad, I think they waited way too long.

Bill & Ted of 'today' are established stars and there is universal peace. Chuck De Nomolous divorces Missy and decides to get revenge once more.He will take out today's old Bill & Ted by sending Young "Evil Robot Us's" to kidnap 1989 Bill & Ted.Queue lot sof mayhem involving Young Bill & Ted, Old Bill & Ted, Young and old good and evil robot us's, and even older Bill & Teds and good and eveil robot us's from the future. There's the seed, someone write a decent script and, well it'll probably stink but there you go :D

Best sequel name to never be made.Thought I'd throw my useless trivia hat in the ring ;)

Man, I remember the 1st movie's trailers hitting television and it was all my buddies and I could talk about. Especially that "Put them in the iron maiden!" bit. I watched the 1st one a dozen times, but never saw the 2nd one all the way through. I'm game for a 3rd. It's not like the other ones were high art and we'd be spoiling something wonderful. Didn't the 1st one languish on the company shelves for a while before being released into theatres?
-
at the Circle K.
-
Old Bill and Ted are divorced and down on their luck playing bingo halls and can't understand why things didn't turn out like Rufus said.Rufus like character shows up and tells them there was a error in the time records and it wasn't Bill and Ted who change the universe...it's Bill & Ted! "You guys don't bring universal harmony...you guys are idiots!"Not quite the same weight without Carlin. Though Ricky Gervais as someone mentioned would be a fun substitute.
-
Keanu needs to take himself a little less serously. I say let him go for it.
-
i think they should have winters all strung out ,up shits creek. And reeves could be the computer corporate suit who drags winter out of the shit on another journey.
-
Forget about another Bill and Ted, let's see "Freaked Too!"
-
I don't think you get the concept of what makes a "good sequel". Bringing back Socrates or Billy the Kid would have been awful. Shit, most of the "cool characters" you're talking about from the original barely had a line of dialogue.
-
OK it couldn't top Excellent Adventure (what could?) but it contained great moments and is well worth checking out if you haven't. What we would see 20 years on from that would surely be Bill & Ted's kids, right? But of course Keanu and Alex would still play Bill & Ted, maybe having to rescue their kids who get caught up with an 'evil' Rufus-like character.

Merrick, it's so true. My teacher showed us B&T way back.
by onin solstice
Truthfully, the way the historical figures are shown and discussed made it very useful. It's not a history lesson but a sort of sneak peek at the topic. And now I refuse to think of Napoleon as being anything but a childish, angry little french man who loves ice cream. Seriuosly, how wrong could it be? Read a book people.
-
One of those little finely-crafted gems that achieves all its principal aims. (Tremors is another such.)
Has the best time-travel bootstrapping sequence in any mainstream movie, and has SO many great throwaway lines. Minor masterpiece. -
Dana Carvey said he was uncomfortable with Wayne's World's similarities to B&T. "Aren't we just doing Bill and Ted? I thought we'd be nailed as doing a Bill and Ted ripoff."
-
Started as a SNL sketch remember? Before Bill & Ted. Only the WW movies came after.\
And a time travellingphone booth - hmmm.... where have I seen that one before, for decades...
Don't get me wrong though, I love B&T.
Wyld Stallions! -
Yeah -- I saw it. No, it was nothing like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It sucked.
-
that's not actually correct...the first Wayne's World sketch on SNL was on Feb. 18th, 1989. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was released on Feb. 17th, 1989, one day earlier. (and of course, in production months and months earlier)
I don't think either can be considered derivative of the other considering that, do you? -
Wait... that part doesn't hold up as well...
-
I recently read about the KISS movie, and thought, "Oh, that's where that all came from." Plus KISS did the closing credit song.

except fpr Die Hard 2. I love that man purely for Wonderfalls...and he stole Bogus Journey from everyone else.Die Hard 2 is just a horrible shame for him-he could have been a star after tha, except it was a diabolical turd......
-
I'd rather see a Beavis and Butt-head sequel.
-
screw alex winter
-
Have it as a situation where you flash forward 20 years. Wyld Stallyns never took off to the degree they were hoping it to. The whole thing at the end of Bogus Journey was a whole 'wishful thinking' thing. We find out by the end of the movie, that they actually needed to wait for their children to grow up so they could form a full band with them, fathers and sons in the same band or something. Remove the princess babes, drop the fathers and sons in, have a full on rock band. EXCELLENNNNNT!
-
Im twenty-one now and remember loving the films when I was a kid, especially "Bogus Journey." Anyway, Im all for a third film as long as it can match the hilarity of the first two. Id much rather see a third B&T film than some other shitty reboot anyday.

Ah, I read Feb eighty-EIGHT. I guess the site made a typo. Anyway, like I say, I love B&T, and the Evan Dorkin comics were great too.

That the Wayne character existed even before that. Just sayin'. I agree with you about certain things just being in the air though. It's not like it was one of those Katzenberg fast-tracks competing project things...

how can ANYONE prefer Exceelent adventure over Bogas journey???? excellent adventure was fun but it was fun the same way Suburban commando was fun. stupid, cheap and ultimately dumb. but bogas journey .... THAT is one of the GREATEST movies EVER made!! I'm not joking

fair enough.
I would support a new Bill and Ted movie as much as anyone...and a new Wayne's World movie as much as, well...Dana Carvey -

no george carlin would make it feel like half a film. if they do it, they should do it in almost a Hook-ish kind of way.

...Of updating the music to include shitstains like Limp Bizkit or My fucking Emo Romance, then it's over. It needs to be Faith No More, Poison and Bon Jovi all the way. With a guest cameo by Wahlberg as the lead vocalist in Steel Dragon. Y'know... because Herek made both ROCK STAR and the first BILL & TED.
Party on, dudes! -
I think bogus journey ended the story on a super positive high.If this goes ahead (and it probably wont)I just hope the producers pull there finger out and do something really cool like digitally recreate Rufus otherwise im out!
-
The whole reason B&T2 is inferior to B&T1 is because the second movie kept trying to force memes on the audience that WEREN'T FUCKING FUNNY. I have never, never said "Station!" to anyone, because it's shit. I have, however, a terrible habit of quoting stuff from EXCELLENT ADVENTURE several times a day. B&T2, while still an awesome movie, wasn't the equal of the first. Station - Trying too hard, dudes.
-
"Wait a minute, Rufus, don't they kick your ass??"
"Yeah... if you don't make with the head! Hey, if it gets me a few miles down the road, I'll take a shot in the mouth. Don't be so suburban! There are no more lines..."
Carlin is sorely missed. -
I like that the least realistic aspect of the future from those movies is that there would still be phone booths.
-
Not Billy Connelly, the original dude.

How else would Superman change from nerd to Superhero costume?

Wow ! This news is great !
-
For the life of me, I can't see where you go with the concept of B&T as adults ... I too have always had a soft spot for the clever corniness of those two movies (more the first than the second, but it was impressive that they found a cool concept at all for the sequel). But I wouldn't want to see them still being the same slackers years later ... part of the fun of B&T was the thought they really would eventually grow up and have a clue.
-

best 5 out of 7. Would love. Love! to see a grown up Bill and Ted, especially if they've actually changed and are successful and have lost their slacker innocence and they have to rediscover it. 80s nostalgia abounds. If Tron can do it, well...And yeah, just because it came out in 89, doesn't mean that it's not 80s. It was conceived and made in the 80s. Feels like an 80s film. Most decades still stick around for the first few years of the next decade before the character of the time shifts. That's why early 90s films still feel like the 80s. Things don't just automatically change culturally when the decade ends.

...is my favorite scene in Bogus Journey
-
would probably play Rufus' son. Cause that's how short we are on character actors nowadays. Stationnnn!
-
is it sad that i watched that mtv clip over and over to see if he was really serious? Fuck man, please make another...Bogus journey is genius! 'are you a mineral?' 'are you a tank?' 'Woah! Good one'
-
You know, directing and stuff.
-
As soon as the credits started, I asked my date where the acid was. What a weird, fun movie.
-
...so he's gotta be Ted, right?
-
Crap, that was Bogus Journey..
(see GB3 could work!) -
played by Silent Bob himself, Kevin Smith...after he stops hoarding food from his now-bone-thin wifey.
-
NON HEINOUS!

It's would be really nice to see Keanu is not so full of himself that he'd go back and revisit that role.
Even more amazing would be an alien vs predator style mash of Bill & Ted with Back to the Future's Marty McFly on a crazy combined adventure through time. -
where has harry's oscar blog gone? I was on this site in net cafe couple of days ago and it was active. but now its gone. tried searching for it on this site and all i got was either capones arthouse oscar round from this year or links to the nominees from this year did things get really ugly for harry when he realised that cameron lost. rumours suggest that cameron was not the favourite to win by any means and regardless of the luke warm reaction to the hurt locker, in the end Hollywood, which was beaming from ear to ear over how well avatar did, did not want to see cameron on the podium. because despite the fans and thier worship of Cameron. He is not all that well liked in hollywood. I have heard.

I suggest Morgan Freeman or Samuel L jackson as rufus. or Chris Rock. But it wont happen. not after Keanu entered the Matrix and shredded his surfer dude personae. He was dreadful in the watcher.
