Has The FRIGHT NIGHT Remake Found Its Director??

Published at:  Mar 08, 2010 9:39:30 AM CST

Merrick here...

L.A. TImes is saying the FRIGHT NIGHT remake is close to landing a director.

A sweepstakes that included at least three directors appears to be coming to a close, with Craig Gillespie the man who will likely sit behind the camera. Sources say that after the studio met with and contemplated a number of directors, the parties on Friday began entering negotiations for Gillespie to take the reins.

...says L.A. Times HERE.

If you're not familiar with Gillespie's work, he recently brought us LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, MR. WOODCOCK, and was a director/producer on Diablo Cody's Showtime series THE UNITED STATES OF TARA.

FRIGHT NIGHT is being written by Marti Noxon (the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series, MAD MEN).

Very curious to see how they'll handle this new version tonally. Will they work to replicate the original's vibe?

Will it skew more towards suspense? More towards comedy? Or will it be fluffed up thanks to the success of TWILIGHT and whatnot?

I am really torn over this. Fright Night is one of my absolute favorite vampire films. And I have been opposed to this remake, right up until a rumor saying that the new version will be about a kid, loving the original Fright Night, and seeking the help of Chris Sarandon (as himself) to help fight vampires. Now that is a premise I could get excited about. But a straight remake.. naah. Although I do think the director is a really interesting choice.
And since this is now in the works - PLEASE release the orignal 2 films on Special Edition Blu-rays! NOW!!

Yeah he's a good director - Lars is a great flick. But no-one should be doing this. Fright Night is untouchable, perfect beyond any other 80's movie. It is pure joy. I for one will be attending the remake, purely to let off dozens of vile stinkbombs in the theatre to clear it. Whoever takes the roles of Jerry or Peter? Never fucking watching another film by them again, whoever it is. Fuck. This. Noise. Man.

    by greatone3

Like "John Carpenter's Vampires"? Carpenter deserves to be repeatedly kicked in the balls for how he butchered such a compelling book by John Steakley (entitled "Vampire$", yes, with the "$" at the end). BOOK SPOILERS BELOW Catholic Church hunting down vampires - how can you screw that up? Oh yeah, completely change the awesome plot (from the vampires trying to recruit the head vampire killer to their side vs. vampires looking for some lame cross); change the Catholic Church representatives from the heroes to the villain; remove all scenes depicting Catholic/Christian powers over vampires (the scene in the Bishop's church/home, the Pope's meeting with a vampirized Crow at the end); screwing up the vampires-hiding-in-a-jail scene; adding a bloated and unnessecary Daniel Baldwin; having Crow allow a vampirized Baldwin to leave; ad nauseum. The only thing Carpenter got right was having James Wood as Crow. Didn't even get the motel massacre scene right. Idiot.

For real....Just saw this two night ago (coincidentally). Great film. Sure it's dated but Jerry Dandridge and Billy Cole make wonderful villians. Roddy made the film for me...so who in the world would take HIS place? I like the Chris Sarandon film within a film playing himself. What if Christopher Lee was tapped for the Peter Vincent Role? Too old? Sir Lee still kicks all kinds of ass in my opinion.

Why 70's and 80's genre remakes worked

    by davidhessstation

Here is why some of the best remakes ever came out in the 70's and 80's: the directors had talent AND/OR had previously worked in the horror genre. Invasion of the Body Snatchers was directed by Philip Kaufman, a very talented director. The Thing was directed by John Carpenter at his peak. Night of the Living Dead had Tom Savini at the helm with Romero writing the script once again. Oh and CGI ruins everything.

Sheer brilliance with Fright Night. J Geils themesong, the genius of McDowell and Sarandon. I LOVE that movie.Don't forget the kick ass soundtrack by Brad Fiedel!!Plus I want that house...the stairs in the front entry with that kick ass stained glass with sunlight shining though and a sweet basement? The idea of a quasi-realistic, ala JCVD, with Sarandon as the guy the hapless kid goes to get him to help after seeing the original movie is a clever twist on a remake. A straight remake just sounds like it couldn't possibly work....most of these types of movies are so 'lightening in a bottle' that you can never EVER come close...not even with mad budgets and the greatest directors/actors would you capture the same magic...you'd come close probably...and the results could be brilliant but the odds are slim and thus the reasons questionable...

    by hint_of_smegma

Sarandon was literally the greatest screen vampire ever - coolest, most perfect performance for the genre. Fright Night as a whole was utter brilliance, a real case of lightning in a bottle. The only hope for this new movie is if Sarandon is involved and even then, let's face it - it's not going to equal the original. But if they have any sense and make it a genuinely balls to the wall, horrific non-cgi horror with Sarandon caught up battling 'real life' vamps, it could be good in it's own right. Just can't see that happening though. This will be Twilighted into emo-friendly pap and we all know it. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

Hey... Executives!! There are thousands of starving ORIGINAL writers out there...

But, we all know the cycle. The make bad movie cuz' enough dolts will go and see them to make a profit on a hedged bet as opposed to someone with the ball to take a chance on a new idea.
