‘I Don’t Give A Shit About The Victims’ Money!!’ Herc’s Seen DAMAGES 3.7!!

Published at:  Mar 08, 2010 5:31:16 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Previously. On “Damages”:

Patty Hewes dreams of Ellen Parsons, bloody cupcakes and a horse.

Danielle Marchetti joins her lover Louis Tobin in heaven.

Tom Shays beats down the investment advisor who put him and his famly into Tobin’s Ponzi hedge fund.

A pretty prospective young Hewes & Shays associate, Alex Benjamin, tells Ellen she likes the idea of Patty owning her. Patty then sends Alex on a “conjugal visit” to nerd convict Sterling Biddle.

Biddle’s decorator happens to be that Keith Carradine character who’s been lurking around all season. Wha?

FX says of tonight’s installment, directed by Glenn Kessler from a teleplay by Todd Kessler and titled “You Haven’t Replaced Me”:

Patty sends Tom abroad to follow the Tobin money trail, and Winstone leaves town mysteriously. Ellen must choose between her boss at the DA’s office and Patty.

What FX isn’t telling you? We learn a lot about Leonard Winstone tonight. A lot.

The cover of Entertainment Weekly this week carries the headline “The 10 Best TV Shows Right Now!” “Damages” is one of those 10 shows.

    Too bad nobody is watching.

I'll enjoy it while it lasts. I know some were skeptical of Martin Short, but he's done fine, and his office decor is...interesting. The penchant for casting comic actors in dramatic roles hasn't gone too badly. Short, Tomlin, Shawn...

Incredible comeback after muddled Season 2

    by reflecto

Apparently William Hurt's issues with the show made a hash of that season's plot, which was largely centered around his character, only for him to be written around, mangling the story. Season 3 is firing on all cylinders again - amazing stuff.

Yeah, season 3 is very good

    by veritasses

Not as good as S1 but much, much better than S2. It's a good example of how much substance you can give a character (with good writing, directing, acting, editing, lighting) despite the character having very little screen time (eg: cops). It's a feat I wished a show like Caprica would duplicate. That show's been... disappointing in almost every way.

i miss this dynamic in s3 but tonight's sounds promising.

at first in this season i was disappointed about Tobin seemingly not matching up to Frobisher or even Kendrick as an antagonist but it seems Winstone is really the one to watch.

also, Tom Noonan is great in this season. I didn't really care for the no-flashforward ep though.

    by machthree

Honestly, every year it just drags a lot, especially at the start of the season. It takes too long to unfold. And why the heck does Patty give two hoots about Ellen? I get why she hired Ellen to begin with - because of her indirect ties to Frobisher. But after that case was over, ok, Ellen is a first or 2nd year lawyer, a dime a dozen, especially if Hewes & Associates can basically hire whomever they chose. I don't get it.

MachThree, my answer to your question.

    by johnnyangel

I think that Patty sees herself in Ellen. Patty really can't relate to anyone very much. She is very closed off, very manipulative. Ellen is the only one who can see through her. I think Patty cares about Ellen almost like a daughter.

I preferred s2 over 3 so far at least in terms of having Patty and Ellen together more. Last week's was the first one where I felt like it really got back to that dynamic in the dream sequence. To me they're so interesting because there's the mother/daughter thing (compounded by Patty's memories of her stillborn daughter) but also the way the dynamic gets reversed: Patty seems to subconsciously elevate Ellen and revere her opinion in a way that Ellen doesn't care about at all with Patty. There was the dream last week and I also remember the one in s2 where all the men in Patty's life are in her apartment. As intimidating as Patty is publicly, throughout s2 and now (like Patty's lame passive-aggressive attempt to reconnect with Ellen w/ the Chanel bag) Ellen holds the cards in their relationship.

I can't find the story but I remember that he didn't really get along with the cast and/or crew and his the significance of his character was reduced through the season because of it.

    by darqueguy

Damages is doing such a better job at highlighting his dramatic chops vs. the ridiculous "psychic" episode of L&O:SVU. Attention Christopher Nolan: if you need a Mad Hatter for the next Batman flick, look no further.

I'm wondering if this article is a reaction to my comments on Herc in last Friday's Caprica thread. I said that he never actually posts reviews of episodes prior to airing anymore (because he has no connections and doesn't even get advanced viewing copies as a journalist/critic because he's a joke). The title of this article proudly proclaims that Herc has seen this episode early! Yet 90% of the content of the article is a recap of what has happened so far, and then a quote from the FX blurb about the episode. Finally, Herc writes a single sentence alleging some additional content in the episode. Anyone else remember how Herc would post the closing line of dialogue from the episode in his reviews to prove that he had actually seen the episode early? I'm calling his bluff. Herc hasn't seen shit about tonight's episode that he hasn't read from some other entertainment critic who actually does his job, and is just trying to look like he does something useful here.

I never thought Herc posting the final line of dialogue was to show 'proof' that he watched it...he was just giving us a tease/preview of the episode...if he doesn't get early screener episodes anymore it's no big deal

William Hurt apparently had real problems adjusting to the pace of TV and not knowing his motivation all along - did his character kill his wife, is he good or bad, etc - and also had typical diva issues. He then pulled out of a great deal of the season and the show had to compensate. Tim Olyphant is apparently not back this year; he was supposed to be in some capacity, but I think that was curtailed when he got his own FX show.

  • I liked William Hurt's character arc last season--it was fun trying to figure out just how much rage this man has inside him. Hurt wasn't sure how to play the character? I call bullshit.

I never felt like William Hurt's performance was centered last year. On the other hand Ted Danson was brilliant at playing Frobisher as the kind of guy who would screw over tens of thousands of people but then be honestly surprised when no one liked him.

    by altoandando

really, what a fine show, and what a damn shame that it's not getting watched. this is what real writing is, tight, memorable, and just good. it's hard to think of another show that could induce such dread with the smallest of cues. so glad that we're only at half season... if you're not watching this, give it a chance!

I can believe the stuff about Hurt

    by the mcpoyle clan

I don't know if it carried into S2, but IIRC, during S1, there were times when the direction of the plot wasn't entirely certain, and as a result, the scripts may have been late. Not as bad as David Milch is reputed to be, but that kind of thing is hard to cope with for some actors.

    The Ellen/Patty separation is necessary...

    by danielkurland

Just like McNulty is separated from The Wire guys in season 2 and it takes SO long for him to rejoin, but when he does, you're all the more grateful. It's the same thing here. When they are working together again, you'll be so fucking happened, and if this took place in episode three, it'd hardly have the same impact. I'm really loving the dynamic of Ellen and Patty being this broken up couple; you see them going through the same motions, and SLOWLY getting under each other's skins. It's also great that Ellen is just fucking people like Reston because she's just gotten so bored with what her life now is.

    by danielkurland

I was skeptical as to how he could end up where the flashforwards indicated he would be, but man, that scene where he walks out on his kid's recital and fights with the guy in the bathroom was so good. You can EASILY see how money can fuck up good people really easily; I guess that's kind of been a flagship point of the show.
