HBO’s BIG LOVE Is Over Already??

Published at:  Mar 07, 2010 4:37:15 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Big Love’s” fourth season is not only Beach Boys-free, it’s also only nine hours long. And the finale airs during the Oscars, so don’t expect a huge rating.

And don’t worry about a huge rating. HBO greenlit season five last month.

Really enjoyed seeing the Hollis Green justice system in action this season (especially the reaction of Bill’s dad, played by Bruce Dern, to all the creepy madness). And I love that Bill thinks Margene having more than one husband is “unnatural.” But I have a few questions:

* What’s taking the Sissy Spacek and Perry King characters so long to discover Bill’s a polygamist? Hundreds of people in Greater Salt Lake City – polygamist and non-polygamist, Juniper Creek residents, law enforcement officials, drive-in attendants, neighbors – must know by now, no? At the end of season one, Barb admitted to an assistant to the governor’s wife that she was “involved in a polygamist lifestyle.” (But then again, nobody seemed to catch on to what a petty little idiot Sarah Palin was before John McCain snatched her from obscurity. Maybe a Utah state senate race simply doesn’t invite a ton of scrutiny.)

* Where did Barb’s concern about Mormon pill-popping come from?

* Is the Adam Beach character going to lay a big wet one on Barb?

* How hot is Nicki now that she’s slutting it up a little?

HBO says of tonight’s season finale, titled “End of Days”:

With the State Senate election only days away, Bill (Bill Paxton) puts the squeeze on Paley (Perry King) in an attempt to protect his candidacy. But Marilyn (Sissy Spacek) has an ace up her sleeve that threatens to wreck Bill’s chances, or so it seems. At the casino, Jerry (Robert Beltran) and Tom’s (Adam Beach) tribal leadership is jeopardized by the illegal actions of family members. Caught in a tangled family web, Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) weighs her allegiance to Bill with her desire to keep Ana (Branka Katic) and Goran (Steve Bacic) in her life. Desperate to get pregnant, Nicki (Chloë Sevigny) gets news from Dr. Roquet Walker (Eric Ladin) – J.J.’s son – that seems too good to be true. A late-breaking polygamist scandal in Kansas becomes national news, forcing Bill and his three wives to rethink their bold post-election plans. Written by Eileen Myers; directed by David Petrarca.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.
(It also repeats at 11 p.m. for everybody busy with the Oscars.)

Here's the thing about Big Love

    by mraig

The show is structured in such a way to make you think that Bill is the hero. In most of the episodes he is the protagonist, his struggles are the conflicts, and things are resolved when he gets his way. Therefore, it's easy to think that the show wants you to think he is the good guy.

But clearly Bill is a very very nasty guy. Forget the fact that he's a polygamist--that's his religion, the wives seem up for it, whatever. But his every move is completely self-serving and calculated; he takes what he wants at the expense of everything else. He is nothing but a younger version of Roman Grant, trying to build an empire with himself at the center and saying it's for the good of the people.

Just this season he has been building a church with himself at the center, and he is running for congress to grab at political power. When Marge gives his teenage son a kiss, he puts her in the corner and kicks out his son (just like his father kicked him out). When his daughter questions his righteousness, he practically disowns her. He threw his business partner at the hardware company under the truck to protect his own political ambitions. He has previously played the various factions of the Greens and Grants against each other, costing many of them their lives and stealing the gaming company contract from them.

And this is what I love the most about the show. It's about the evolution of a villain. This is what a polygamist "prophet" at the head of a compound with dozens of wives and hundreds of people groveling under him looks like when he's young. This is how it starts. His wives are all good people, but each deeply flawed and hurt in such a way that she lets him take advantage of her.

Can't wait for the finale, and Season 5!

mraig, that's the best "first" post ever!

    by hercules

but I don't think the show's creators see Bill as a villain. Look at how Bill stood up for Barb on TV. And how Bill rescued his piece of shit father from the Green compound.

    I don't think he's the villain.

    by jedirob

He has his faults, and a duality but in the end I feel his intentions are pure. Most of the characters have two sides, as most people do. That's why the show is so greatToo bad it was only 9 episodes, but I'll take it. Fantastic show. Not quite as riveting as season 3 but riveting nonetheless.

Herc I'm sure they don't see him as a villain, but he is. He didn't stand up for Barb as much as he made a play that seemed right for his campaign. He rescued his dad just to say see I'm a good guy. As for pure intentions. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Love the show and /bill but he is clearly a villain maybe he will straighten out in the end. doubtful...

    I agree with mraig

    by autonoe

Bill's arcs over the seasons have basically been him becoming assier and assier, moving closer back to his roots in the compound. Every episode this season I have wanted to punch him in that smug, self-righteous face. He's the most dangerous kind of villain, one who thinks he's right no matter what. This show is fucking awesome. What I want to know is, when did Nicki suddenly 'fall in love' with him? Or is that just because he's getting closer to what she's known all her life on the compound? It just seemed to come out of nowhere.

    by alpha

The greatest villains are the the heroes of their own story. Bill thinks he good and right but basically he's kind of evil at heart. He's exactly the kind of guy who starts a cult and ends up dead or in jail after something truly whacko occurs. I think this series will have a decidely downbeat ending.

    by gotilk

I'm watching the show for the first time this season and I'm planning on going back to watch the previous seasons after this one is finished. (by the way, that headline scared the crap out of me! I love this show!) It does feel kind of like the evolution of a young villain. But in a way he's kind of won me over every time, when all is said and done. And I'm an atheist! A strong one. I look at his character and think sometimes, would anyone struggle that hard and that long to be in his shoes? Sure, he's married to multiple attractive women. But is that enough to motivate a man through all the struggles he's been through? All the struggles his family has been through? Wouldn't it be substantially easier to just be a hippie? If that's his primary motivation, after all, to just pork/rescue as many women as he can. Why not just grow his hair long and follow a jam band around the country for a few years, collecting his new cult? It would be much easier. From an evolutionary standpoint, biologically, perhaps he's being much more honest with himself, at least subconsciously, than any of us. Man's primary motivation being to live long enough to have sex with and breed with as many different mates as possible. And of course alpha here above me is right, too. No realistic villain ever thinks he's evil. They always find a way to justify what they've done or are planning to do. And sometimes, maybe they're right. It's not historically inaccurate to say that in hindsight, many men and women who have been seen as villains in their time end up being seen as pioneers or heroes when history has it's final say. I guess it all just depends on who wins the prize of being able to write said history. And considering that, when can we ever be sure who the villains are in real life, let alone fiction? Many or some would even say most of history's heroes never make it to their death beds without at least some blood on their hands. So is he a hero or a villain? I can't say yet. But he is fucking creepy as hell from time to time. And his religion scares the shit out of me. I'll be watching until the end to decide. I have to say I'm still shocked that I can even stand this show, but the writing is really good, they have a great cast that seems to get better all the time.

    Evolution of all GOP leaders

    by shutupfanboy

I haven't seen the show, but the first post was what I thought when I saw the first previews for the show. That the character is all about self gratification and power. The family is just another way he has power. And before this becomes another thread where its left vs. right, I would like to make this point. Palin's recent baby's birth and ongoing health as well as the rest of her family is being paid for by health care that Obama wants to give to the rest of the country. And since medical bills was not one of the reasons for her to up and quit her job, I am not sure where the hell she or another GOP government employee get off by saying health care is evil since it obviously works for them. Also, anyone who believed the Death Panel idea is a moron. And if this fails people are going to have to choose between life or death my father almost did when he got cancer. Thankfully, he had something similar to the government insurance to keep him alive and not have to make the choose. As for Obamacare, at least he cares only Bush, McCain or Palin.

Not to bring up any painful childhood raping memories, but in the Star Wars Prequels, Anakin did lots of nice things for those around him. Sometimes just because he wanted to be nice and helpful. Even when he went all dark side and wound up thinking he killed his baby mama, he cried out with a heartfelt NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Anyhoo, I think Bill was going down that path, but looks like he recognized it. Maybe there is still a chance for him.

    by the funketeer

He is the villain. He's self centered and egotistical and uses "the path" or whatever to mask his wrongdoings. You compare his expulsion of his son to his father's expulsion of him but we find out this season that his father wasn't really as nasty back then and did it to protect the rest of his family whereas Bill was just jealous. He routinely asks more of his family and friends than he does of himself and doesn't allow any of them a chance to grow.

Bill is creepy, self-righteous, a total hypocrite, a serial adulterer and six kinds of a crook. I had a lot of trouble with that at first because he is presented as the protagonist until finally I realized that the beauty of "Big Love" is the irony of it all. It is a much better show than I originally realized because I was not seeing its depth. Makes me want to go back and watch all the earlier seasons again. The daughter played by Amanda Seyfried is probably the most morally centered person on the show, and she is constantly torn between her love for her father and the angst and trauma that he causes her. I'm looking forward to next season as well. Plus I loves me some Nicky. Mmmmmm, milfy goodness.

Think of Bill as the Mormon Tony Soprano. Both saw themselves as a good guy and the creators were often willing to let the audience think of them that way too...until it was necessary to bitch slap the viewer back to reality. The only real difference is that David Chase structured his story in a way that Tony's flaws had to be more evident on a regular basis while Bill's arc is more of a gradual fall from grace.

I've always seen Bill as, if not a villain, then at least as a terribly flawed character, and I find myself rooting against him more often than I root for him. The show is clever because it tricks you into rooting for people, at times, who you completely disagree with philosophically.

Oh, and the problem with Sarah Palin is really the problem with the media. She saw an opportunity to create a political action committee and make a truck load of money. For her that was more important than governing Alaska. She has a rabid fan base and can con them into making a lot of money. She's an entertainer of sort, not a politician.

The problem with her, then, is that the media still treats her like she's a politician and that she has something useful to add to the national conversation (which she doesn't). She is the embodiment of the intersection between politics and entertainment. "Journalists" don't care if she is a worthy story, they just care if they can get both her vocal minority of fans and her detractors to tune in when her name is on the screen. Modern media seems absolutely incapable of discerning what is serious news and what is fluff and Sarah Palin exemplifies this problem.

Maybe there's always been a leftward bent. However, some of us would argue that the difference between 'old' AICN and 'new' AICN is that it's becoming all consuming and, at least by some appearances, nothing but a cynical ploy to generate thread hits by turning the site away from discussions about film and TV and toward political flame wars.

This thread is one of the better examples of that, insofar as it started with a great post about the meaning and direction of the show and quickly denigrated into yet another bitchfest about politics.

That's true. However, the same could be said for nearly everyone on the show, including Roman. I think when we talk about Bill becoming a villain on the show we are referring to the idea that he is becoming corrupt and following in the footsteps of Roman and his dad despite being the series' protagonist.

Talk about people falling off the face of the Earth. Hardly any of the Star Trek Voyager cast is in anything these days. Is there a curse going on with that cast. And since the reboot this summer it looks like we'll never see these actors in those roles again. It's kinda of a shame not to at least see where the DS9 characters are at today.

A few of Voyager's actors are now into directing. Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris) has directed a ton of television episodes on lots of popular series, presently he's heavily involved with Chuck as a producer/director. Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres) has also been directing many television shows like Charmed, Lost, Heroes, and Cold Case where she was a producer. I think Voyager might actually have more active members than any of the other shows. Jeri Ryan's been in Leverage, Beltran in Big Love, and Robert Picardo has been in a lot of guest rolls all over TV.

...because she's such a complete dumbass, yet so many Republicans feel compelled to rationalize her despite this.

Basically, she's a symbol of how few steps the Republicans have actually taken towards understanding how badly they screwed up. She's the Republicans continuing to refuse to admit, despite best evidence, how far from reality the Party's policies have strayed.

that Bill's past acts are much worse than people have given him credit for. You can see patterns forming. Like when Barb finds out that Bill slept with the fourth wife before being sealed, and then she thinks back to when it also happened with Margene. Or Bill kicking Ben out of his home, JUST like his dad did to him. I just think it's funny that people reading this talkback, based off of this Bill-as-a-villain-in-progress description, actually want to watch the show now. I wonder if HBO had marketed it this way, or treated it like something factual where you know where Bill is going to end up, and then we see him getting there, if more people would have responded to it.

    Bill "The Villain"

    by drdoom_v

Bill is the bad guy- but the beauty of it is he does not see himself that way--he thinks he is on the righteous path to glory. Every bad or morally wrong move he makes is all a means to an end. he is backing himself right into the new "Prophet" of Juniper Creek. Actually he will have more followers than Juniper Creek - Isee him ending up with a huge polygamist following leading the modern day polygamists into the future. Maybe not but that's what I think. Either way it's a great show.

Bill's moral failings go at least as far back...

    by outsidechance

...as marrying Nikki. The back story at first comes off as Bill having an emotional crisis over Barb's possible death that Roman manipulates into taking Nikki as the second wife. However, as we see more and more of how Bill takes subsequent wives that becomes suspect. Instead, it appears from Margene and the Russian chick that Bill is something of a philander who "marries" other women to justify his philandering. In the case of Nikki I think we're going to see (if we haven't already) that he married Nikki more out of belief that he'd soon be widowed and "stuck" with three kids than out of a genuine matter of faith.

    Never bought the political race...

    by henry fool

I'm surprised they deluded themselves into the political race story line. It didn't really have anything substantial. It added nothing new to the esteemed archives of political drama in the mediums of film and television. The show is always at its best when it's a soap opera about warring polygamist clans. That's what they need to focus on next year.

I think the series should end with Bill moving back to Juniper Creek and taking over as Prophet. Flashbacks to the old days reveal a young Roman, portraying him much like Bill. Bill's Grandfather is a tyrant, like Roman. Lois comes off like Nicki. It'd be kind of funny if Frank comes off like Joey, as i'm pretty sure Frank was the one who killed the elder Henrickson, the original prophet of Juniper Creek. As the series moves to close, we see that Bill is becoming like Roman, symbolizing the self-destructive nature of polygamist cuts by having it all come full circle.

    by the_breeze

I still watch it,but this show has major problems. Margene marrying that guy was ridiculous. The marriage is now publicly exposed as a fake , so they can look at a prosecution to avoid immigration laws. Bill's speech sucked. Bill is an arrogant self-righteous prick, who throws anyone and everyone to the wolves to satisfy his ambition. His betraying the Indian guys who brought him into the casino in the first place is a prime example. The Senate thing is a joke; politics is about friends and loyalty, and Bill has neither. Suspension of disbelief on this show is shot.

That said, I still want to know what happens. But I no longer care that much.

Decent finale, I was starting think the big reveal wasn't going to happen, but I'm glad it did. That's the moment they've built up and that we've waited four seasons for. The Henrickson's are now out and season 5 is going to get even more messy. I'm so glad JJ got what was coming to him, he might have been the creepiest character ever. The only part I didn't like was what happened to Jerry and Tommy, I hope they come back for next season in some form.

The only reason I like "Big Love":

    by playkins

There was a fucker that trolled me on the IMDB boards because I was dumb enough to admit being friends with a director he doesn't like. He used to post all over the "Big Love" boards, which has nothing to do with "Big Love" itself, but was the impetus as to why I'm even mentioning it here. So.... attack I did.
I googled his screen name and found an obscure kite-flying forum he was a member of. I dug through his posts and in one, he mentioned his street name. In another, he mentioned that he liked to fly kites near his house in Portsmouth. Whaddya know, I found it on google maps and I could even street view it! There was one house on the block that had.... you guessed it.... a kite windmill thing on the mailbox. I bet I had him nailed.

I posted his address, what his house looked like, the store on the corner, everything. I think I freaked him out because he wrote me very, very, VERY nasty message and deleted ALL of his posts.

It was a very pathetic thing to do of me, but it was somewhat satisfying knowing that I actually won an argument on the internet. So there. Take that, asshole.

There's not much to Palin beyond Fey's SNL impression

    by american mythos

There isn't much to Palin beyond the SNL impression by Fey. I'm from Alaska and followed the 2006 governor's race very closely, even volunteered many man hours for a candidate in the Democratic primary. Palin was never much more than a cardboard cut-out touting one-liners like "new energy for Alaska," "good ol' boys club," blah, blah, blah.

There never was much substance to her in any of the debates I watched, some which I saw on TV and one which I attended in person. Sitting amongst two Democratic opponents, the Republican incumbant governor, and an Independent challenger named Andrew Halcro, Palin barely spoke two words in an hour and a half. She just sat there, watching "the good ol' boys" intelligently discuss the issues.

A couple years after the campaign for governor, Andrew Halcro, the Independent candidate, blogged about an incident prior to one of their debates (where one of the topics would be health care). He said that while he and the other candidates quietly awaited their call to the stage, Palin and an adviser were in a last minute cram session in the hallway, her adviser trying to drill some health care facts into her head. Finally, frustrated, Palin grabbed the armful of papers before her and rushed out on stage with them.

I genuinely think Palin has a learning disability; ADD or some inability to retain information. She's not very well educated to begin with -- she thought Africa was one big country for Christ's sake. And if you've listened to her speeches, they're often rambling and breathless; you can clearly see points where Palin cannot recognize the end of one sentence and the beginning of another. Sort of like Paul's campaign speech in the movie "Election." It's clearly an undiagnosed disability. I'm not saying it to be cruel -- it's just obvious.

Can't wait to see Palin tear Obama to shreds in debates! The Annointed will begin to mumble and fumble because he wont have a teleprompter to tell him how to respond to her.

The Lefties hate and fear Palin because she is the real deal. an everyday American who made it in Politics. That scares the heck out of the establishment, and not just the left.

Oh btw alot of the Interviews that people like to point to that make Palin seem scattered were edited that way to do just that. Watch the documentary Media Malpractice. No Not done by a right winger but by a Democrat supportive Libertarian.

Palin Rocks and represents a Reagan like approach to things that can turn things around for the Country and that frightens Libs. So like all Posers they must tear someone else down to make themselves seem better.

Obama will mumble and fumble without a teleprompter? Like he did in the three teleprompter-less debates he had with McCain, where McCain was left literally looking like a lost meandering invalid? Or the 90 minutes he spent answering unscreened questions from Republicans to the point that Republican congressional aides were calling for the organizers of the event to be fired? Meanwhile, Palin got a fifteen minute Q & A session handed to her before appearing at the tea party convention -- and she still had to take notes on her hand! Or, as it's come to be known, her hillbilly teleprompter. One thing is certain: I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Obama and Palin debate. I think I speak for every liberal in America when I say I would love for her to be the Republican nominee. She would do most of Obama's campaigning for him.

Things to Love about the Show

    by goodkinggrimlock

    1. Agree with mraig and what has been said about how they are showcasing the would-be cult leader as completely justified in his own mind. The overall theme of Bill morphing into Roman over the past 2 seasons has been fun. Other not-so-subtle hints include his performing a marriage and exploring the purchase of the "big house" that looks just like the one on the compound.

    2. The pace of this show is just outstanding. Things actually happen without the meandering of certain other HBO dramas. They set something in motion and go for it. I appreciate that they don't waste my Sunday night.

    3. Frank and Lois are the best couple on TV right now hands down. Frank vs. the flamboyant mexican birdkeeper? Lois with the machete? That's gold right there.

    4. I think the most interesting thing is how this show almost dares you to judge the actions of the middle class, suburban guy with the SUV and the pretty wives by a different set of standards than you judge the compound trash who live in shacks and drive clunkers.

    5. I didn't think they could top the creepiness of Hollis Green and Brother Selma but JJ and his lack of fingernails came pretty close.

    Beating wives?

    by american mythos

Spousel abuse has no political boundaries. Here in my homestate, a young political superstar in the Alaska Republican Party, Schaeffer Cox -- who started a second amendment task force last year with over three-thousand members (and growing) and recently drew criticism for giving a speech in the states and saying there's nothing wrong with anti-government militias -- was recently arrested and pleaded out to choking his wife in front of their son. So don't try to paint liberals as wife beaters when abuse exists irrespective of political affiliation. I usually find people who make wide ranging accusations like that have their own skeletons. As for Crow3711; I just read his comment. A dumb fucking comment from another TalkBacker looking for attention. I've said this to Coughlin's Laws: If you're expecting maturity and reason from a TalkBack, don't hold your breath. And the irony of Sarah Palin is...

    by american mythos

... she was once the most popular politician in Alaska -- know she's one of the most reviled politicians in her homestate. After a blatantly calculated choice of money over governance, she lost a lot of respect even amongst her most ardent supporters. That loss of love isn't exactly being made up for by the rest of the country -- 70 percent of Americans think she's unqualified to be president. What's more -- she's one of the worst hypocrites in the political landscape. She's against a so-called government take over of health care, but just the other day she proudly stated her family's fondness of the Canadian single-payer system, which her family would cross state lines to take advantage of when she was a child. Not only that, but her children are all medically covered by Alaska's free Native health care system. It's good enough for her kids -- just not for yours.

...religion is. particularly the henrickson's religion. the whole show is about how fucked up people can become when they are raised up with "god is always judging you and will condemn you to burn eternally at the drop of a hat" pounded into their heads.

when i watched the first three seasons through the first time, i rooted for the family. you can't help but like the characters the first time through. it is a natural response.

when i reviewed the first three seasons to prep for season four, i saw the show VERY differently. whether or not you agree with the statement i made above, the showrunners are subtly , but WITHOUT DOUBT, vilifying religion and illustrating what a horrible idea plural marriage is.
