I am – Hercules!!

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that “Fringe,” the Bad Robot sci-fi drama that has struggled in the ratings since Fox moved it to an impossible Thursday timeslot opposite “The Office,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “CSI,” will be back next season.

The adventures of dimension-hopping FBI superagent Olivia Dunham and her science-pals the Bishop Boys have seen ratings improvements of late, while “Grey’s” has lately been bleeding viewers like a hemophiliac in the ER:

Thursday 18-49 finals (repeats in gray; previous in parentheses):

“Fringe” has been on hiatus for the last month, but returns with new episodes on April Fool’s Day.

    Not just the slot

    by jdb1972

They basically dismissed the cliffhanger by giving Olivia amnesia and only occasionally came back to it. After all the buildup about Bell and Nimoy playing him, he probably got 3 minutes of screen time. Huge letdown. And then they've skipped back to dumb "monster of the week" stories a lot. Once you've introduced a mythology, it had better be consistent (anyone heard anything about The Pattern this season? No?) and omnipresent. Fringe is following the X-Files down the road to failure.

    Plus...

    by jdb1972

... they've overplayed Walter's tics to the point he's gone from entertaining to annoying. Hopefully, the revelation about his son (which we all knew about, making the scene where it was shown less than thrilling) will help that out.

    by roustabout99

they have delved into the mythology..but you can't make the mistake of relying on it solely,if they did that every week we would be on here saying "OMG i thought they were smart, why don't they fix it already?" the amnesia thing was resolved pretty well with the "fear" episode, but it was just a delay job..but if a job is delayed..then sped up...then delayed..then..uuh..ohh..ohhh..uuuh...you know what i mean

    by crow3711

Haven't heard one mention of it since the middle of the first season. Massive Dynamic also didn't pan out the way I expected their story to at all. I love Fringe, and I'm extremely happy to know that there will be at least one more season of quality scifi on tv after lost is over...but the show just hasnt gone the way I expected at all. Not a bad thing at all, or even a complaint...just saying it really didnt stick with the things it set up in the first few episodes. The second season especially is a very different beast than the first.

    Timeshot? Tuesdays.

    by lenny nero

It couldn't have that spot this season because of Fox's decision to bring "So You Think You Can Dance" out of summer into the fall, but after the so-so results, and the fact that they're doing another summer season of the show, they have presumably dropped that idea. So until Cowell gets "The X-Factor" up and running, Tuesday on Fox is wide open again. Welcome back, "Fringe."

    Reply to Talkback

  • per their usual routine with sci-fi. When they are focusing on the meta-story (the pattern, william bell, the watchers), this show is awesome. However, they run two or three shows that are great, then dribble out five go nowhere episodes, followed by a random 6-10 week hiatus.

I want to like this show, but every time I start getting into it ... they piss on my brain.

    Fringe questions

    by melnick666

Where's the other universe's William Bell? If ours is hiding over there, is the other one there as well? I'm assuming that the alternate Walter is leading the attacks on our universe, probably because his son got snatched away. When they reassembled his brain a few episodes ago and he acted like his old self, he was a mean SOB.

Agree with the poster above, the x-files 'monster of the week' approach is infuriating when you have an overall story arc that is so epic. If a parallel universe is declaring war on us, who cares if some kid in Pennsylvania lives like a mole/werewolf/whatever. Don't care, get back to the Pattern.

breaks are normal!!...you've all been spoiled by 24's non-stop season or LOST...most network shows do not run 22 consecutive episodes...repeats/breaks have always been part of television...when did everyone start expecting shows to run straight through?...this is not cable TV people

    by spyguy

FRINGE is great when it actually focuses on its own mythology instead of rehashing old X-FILES story ideas. If they're going to keep swiping from X-FILES, though, let's see them do a version of "Home."

With Lost ending, Caprica slumping in the ratings, and no new Whedon or Moore series in sight, Fringe is a refuge for us genre junkies. Fringe's conspiracy arc has an interesting correlation to that of Lost's, which I think says a lot about how Abrams mind works.

Lost Season One- We are introduced to the mystery of the Island and know things are amiss there. Late in the season John Locke finally stirs everyone with his monologue about how they're not the only people on the Island. The season ends with the Others revealing themselves.

Fringe: Season One- We are introduced to an FBI unit that investigates really weird shit when it happens. We gradually come to realize that these phenomenon are related to an alternate dimension. In the final episode, we finally get the big tell that William Bell is hiding in another universe.

Lost Season Two: We gradually unveil the mysteries of the Others, meeting their leader without even realizing his rank. There world appears cold and brutal and their methods murderous

Fringe: Season Two: We see get glimpses of the other universe from our side. It's a world where vegetation has died out and appears to be a brutal world. A team of other worlders have infiltrated our world and have nefarious plans for humanity

Since the third season of Lost is where we finally penetrated the world of the Others, my guess with Fringe is that next year will take place more inside the parallel dimension we've been hearing about.

    by v'shael

Nothing in Fringe (yet) has gotten to me the way (early X-Files here: )
The binary picture across reams of A4
    Shooting Deep Throat
    5th and 6th nucleotides
Scully swiping an implant over a supermarket IR scanner
Those brought real "WHOA! HOLY SHIT!" reactions. Reactions to PLOT, not special effects.

Nothing in the plot line of Fringe has done that yet. Not even the Twin Towers finale of last year.

Wel then, why don't you illuminate me on why i should mistake Fringe, Twiligth Trek, JJ Abrams and Bob Orci as good things, then? Can you do that without the usual platitudes?

Anna Torv is the weak link on this show

The lab assistant has more charisma. In other news, JJ Abrams must have killed Asimov Lives's dog or something. The guy is rabid. Internet crazy.

How do you know he has been consistently good if you haven't watched a single episode this season? Why post if you have absolutely nothing to say?

Love this show. They should put it on Tuesday instead. Putting it on Thursday was always a horrible idea.

    Now come on, Asimov...

    by red ned lynch

...stop bothering the nice people who want to talk about their monster show. Show's got that nice boy from Dawson's Creek, you know, the nice one...Ducky or something. It's got that mean old Gondor Dad and let me tell you, once a bad father, always a bad father, but he's so sweet and quirky now after burning alive and falling off the tower. It's got that nice girl pretending to be La Femme Peta Wilson and Lieutenant Daniels is hunting monsters. You just hate the show because it's so filled with love, and seeing that love causes you pain. Just squeeze your eyes so tightly shut and open your heart to the music of the Fringe and I think you'll realize there's a little pattern inside of you, too.

    X-Files > Fringe

Seriously, but Fringe is great as well. Walter makes the show. Probably the most compelling character in years.

I guess what I expected, and what's missing..

    by machthree

Is we seem to have found out that Walter's mental problems are due to the fact that someone removed parts of his brain. Not that Peter is an a-hole to his father any more, but I figured that when Peter found out about this, he'd finally *really* understand and get his father and truly forgive him.

There was still things wrong with Walter before he got those pieces removed. It's just why he can't remember some things and the cause of his inability to be self reliant (I assume). His quirks somewhat existed before and he was still not a good father to Peter. The pieces were removed before he was put into the mental institution.

No ZFT, no Pattern, no manifesto

    by gboybama

What's the deal? Was Season 1 like a videogame and once the "boss" (German guy) was killed, it was on to the next "level?"
    That would suck.
Seriously, the pretense of season one was great: Okay, weird things are happening. Why all of a sudden and why all in the New England area? Easy, it's a cabal of folks forcing the barrier between two worlds to be weakened by creating these Fringe science happenings. These events push physics to the limit and all happen in a confined area to maximize the cumulative effect.
That actually tracks. It makes sense and it gives you a framwork to make "monster of the week" actually mean something. If the "monster" is loosed and causes havok, the bad guys get a little closer to weakening the barrier. If the good guys stop them, it's vice versa.
But, they have given not one second of airtime to exploring that this season. It's just been: Hey, check this weird thing out!
Please don't tell me they've flushed that major revelation just like they flushed so much of LOST's season one spitballing of ideas/plotlines.

want to try, but walter's tics...

    by mrgray

So some of you are obviously fans and have watched all/most of the episodes. I watched the first three and was really put off by the overly mannered performance of Noble. I have a feeling I already know the answer to this based on jdb's earlier post, but how much screen-time is devoted in the later episodes to Walter's "antics"? I thought they'd scale back after the pilot (characters are often a bit more overt in pilots) but they didn't seem to, so I gave up.

Fringe's best asset is Walter/Peter relationship.

    by tomonicker

And jeezus, AsimovLives, did you go off your meds? Abrams has had little to do with LOST and maybe just a little more involvement with FRINGE than that, so dial down the VENOM until the next NuTrek Talkback!!! FRINGE needs a set end date, more stuff that ties the mythology in consistently, and a bad ass villian; we met the Re-animated dude and I've nearly forgotten his ass already. The Nimoy stunt cameo is going to seem like dragging out Abe Vigoda everyone once and awhile to see if he's still alive! Good for Late Night. Bad for Fringe.
