HBO’s ROME Continues Its March Toward The Big Screen!!

Published at:  Mar 05, 2010 12:01:18 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus may still live, with HBO’s “Rome” getting closer to a big-screen treatment that would pick up in Germany four years after we saw Pullo and the boy he sired via Cleopatra wandering down the streets of the titular city-state, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“Rome” creator/showrunner Bruno Heller, who went on to create and run the CBS hit “The Mentalist,” has completed a movie script for Morning Light Productions, which is now on the hunt for a studio and director.

For my money “Rome” was up there with “The Wire” and “The Sopranos” as one of HBO’s best original series ever and the best thing I’ve seen out of the BBC (which co-produced) in decades.

To anticipate the question, Heller has long contended that, despite what we saw in the final episode, Vorenus survived the series and will be a major component of any sequel.

Find all of EW’s story on the matter here.

played the young Octavian in season 1 and the start of season 2. He was fantastic, and was also very good a few years earlier in Master & Commander (as the young officer who loses his arm). I don't recall who played the older version, but I was always more impressed with Perkis' portrayal. That said, I fully understand why the producers wanted a slightly more mature looking actor, since Perkis would've been a few years younger than Octavian was at that point in history. They covered a very large period of time very quickly.

But I dig the story, and can't really hate on cable violence and nudity (Herc, you're totally correct on that one - but I'll look forward to the uncut Rome movie DVD... bluray, whatever). Have to admit I also dig that Sam Raimi is a producer. But man! I jazzed that Rome might continue in any form. I really loved that damn show (the DVD sets are outrageously priced, though).

It's like Rome met Xena and gave birth to Kratos. Sure, it's over-the-top and earnest, but the acting is solid and the story is interesting and it has a decent sense of flair brought on by budget constrictions. I dig it, it's a good time. If I'm going to watch a soap opera, I like it vulgar and bloody and naked and homoerotic.

    blackwood - Spartacus

    by jaka

I'm definitely surprised by the quality of the acting (particular if you consider how cheesy it COULD be) and how much the story has sucked me in. I really didn't think there would be much story, but now that we're six or seven eps into it I can easily see a few seasons of political intrigue and backstabbing to be played out. I don't mind the production level at all. A few years ago, before CGI had become the norm it would have been terribly distracting. The comparisons to the look of 300 are fair and very clear, but I actually dig it. I like that they can change the lighting, sky and background to look however they want. And I really like the washed out browns and blues they use so much. When I ATTEMPTED to watch the first episode I thought it was a joke, I'm glad I gave it a second chance. The homoerotic aspect doesn't mean anything to me one way or the other. It's there in spades, to be sure. What was important to me is that several of my gay friends find the male on male relationship to be tasteful and uninsulting (and were actually sad when that guy was killed off). A gay relationship that is not a joke isn't something you see very often in tv or film. So for those who care about such things I think they need to know about this show. Vulgar, bloody and naked is pretty bad ass, though, huh? Oh, and for some reason the look of the show just works more for me since I found out Sam Raimi is one of the producers.

    by v'shael

in that show are about 300% less offensive than a Russell Davies gay couple. It drives home the point to me, that it's his writing which was so bad.

John Hannah continues to impress in the show, and I was blown away by the revelation that he'd had Spartacus' wife killed.

    by themanwhocan

I only watched the first episode I could barely get through it. What a huge disappointment. I stupidly thought they (tv people) had made a show on par with Rome. Christ was I so wrong
300 has a lot to answer for. Rome kicks the living shit out of Sparticus in every way. It had less blood and guts but felt infinitely more violent. It has less nudity and sex yet was infinitely sexier. It had less political intrigue but the plot felt infinitely more interesting.and lastly, the music felt authentic because people didn’t have electric guitars until the 20th century not 2000 years earlier.
Sad thing is Spartacus had a 2nd series green lit before the 1st was even aired. Rome got cancelled prematurely and had to speed along the time line skipping over loads of cool history and famous battles. Bah. I cant even watch Spartacus in a light campy Hercules/Xena way cos its up its own arse half the time and the other half gay death metal scored slow mo cgi splashy blood trash. Enough of my ranting. This is good news about the Rome movie I was beginning to think it wasn’t going to happen. And Vorenus is a badass.

There's a way to bring James Purefoy to the movie

    by asimovlives

If the movie is set in the 6 years period between the antepenultimum and penultimum episodes of the second season. A quick glance at Wikipedia shows those were very eventeful years for both Octavius and Marcus Antonius. Octavius had to deal with the son of Pompeus, who established in Syracusa and took over sicily and declared a war to Octavius, mostly as a naval war. Octavius right hand man, Agrippa, was the decisive factor for Octavius' strategy. As for Marcus Antonius, he waged a whole war in Asia, where he tried to recapture the glory of the Ptolomeous by going Alexandre The Great on the western local powers, including the parthians, rome's eternal enemies. But it all just ended on a stalemate. That period is rich for drama.

...although Rome should have had three seasons (they skipped decades in a gulp and it would have been nice if they could have slowed down) it was able to put together a really wonderful finale. I was sad when it was over, because I really loved it's I, Claudius Meets Caligula groove, but I didn't feel cheated. There have been a couple HBOshows where I did feel cheated. But we might get a Rome movie. Which, yeah, I am still pretty happy about.

Using that line of logic you could argue there has never been a historical movie made with authentic music. Gladiator, for example, had a full orchestral score but many of those stringed, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments were not invented until hundreds of years afterward. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the film though.

He's got to be over 18 by now so he can play the late 20 something Octavian. The guy they replaced him with sucked. And the special relationship these three characters have only really worked with Perkis. A movie with Pullo and Vorenus in German on the run from their former friend would be great.

Muki. I wish you hadn’t brought up Gladiator.

    by themanwhocan

Granted, they didn’t have grand orchestra music and choirs in 3rd century either, to my knowledge at least, but the Zimmers Gladiator score brought some class to that movie and it also suited the movie. Duh Duh Duh Duh guitar “riffs” show Spartacus “BLOOOOOD AND SAAAAANNNNND !ARRRRRRR” up for what it is, and that’s childish trash not far removed from WWF wrestling that most intelligent people grow out when they are 10. So I guess the Electric Guitar “score” probably suits the show. Like it suited the Scorpion King
While on the subject of Gladiator’s music, that movie started a horrible wave of Lisa Gerrard esque vocals, copied hundreds of times since in movies, you know the ahhhheeeeahhh ahhhh iiiiii ahhhha eeeee ahhhhh wailing you know the one, aaaa eee ahhhhh ahhhhhh eeeeee iiiaeehhhhhhhh so called epic movies have been copying it ever since. Lisa Gerrard is a terrible vocalist, simulated Lisa Gerrard makes me shudder everytime i hear it in movies because as soon as you hear it you know the movies gonna me mediocre to shit.aaaaeeee eeee eeee ahhh aahhhhhhhhhh. See youve started me off now.
If anyone involved in the Rome movie is reading this, please please please don’t go the stereotypical Lisa Gerrard score route. We’ve had 10 years of that crap.

On another note (note geddit no? oh f**k off), There’s talk of this movie set between half way into the second season until the end of the show. I first heard its set after the show and Vorenus somehow survived his seemingly mortal injuries, I hope it is a true sequel, sure its a shame all the history was skipped over (and Mark Anthony was always fun to watch) but watching Vorenus alive again knowing hes gonna get done in by some random guards would take away the suspense from any danger he may face in the movie, to me at least.

The best part of Rome was being able to submerse yourself in the world, with rich characters and intertwining plotlines...I just don't see a movie being able to capture the essence of it with out be rushed...unless the movie is a intro to try and bring back the show (and finish it the way they wanted with the birth of Christ)

    by homer40

Rome was obviously a much better show. It was intelligent, which is more than you can say for Spartacus. As a big fan of Kubrick's film, I was initially put off by the series, but by the third episode I started to dig it for what it was. I think the line that got me was, "Still more stroking is needed". The violence, basically just 300 over and over again, was almost boring at first, but has taken on a pop art quality that reminds me of Warhol. It certainly isn't perfect (which Rome was) but it is goofy, sexy, violent entertainment.

I find the language hopelessly off putting though, and I'm someone who LOVED the anachronistic language in Deadwood. I get that they had their own naughty word back then and that's the point, I just can't believe they'd be inserted so clumsily and randomly into every sentence. It's pikers how has some quota it's trying to meet in reared to the use of cock and cunt. "Grab your cock and be a man!" What? Other than that, the show has a goofy, addictive charm, and I've enjoyed each episode more than the last (the pilot was truly, truly terrible though, so I don't fault anyone who was put off from the show after that). As far as a Rome movie, I'm in the maybe camp. I loved the series, but always have a hard time envisioning a movie being able to capture the same sense of scope and nuance. We'll see.

I always thought that an adaptation of colleen McCullough's Masters of roam series would be epic, especially the early books documenting the rise and fall of Sulla. It is a period that has never really been touched by hollywood and would give Caesars and Spartacus story more context.

TheManWhoCan, and the first ep of Spartacus

    by jaka

As has been mentioned (and I totally agree), the first ep was by far the worst. However, since then it just keeps getting better... or at least more interesting. I hated the first ep so much that I turned it off after fifteen minutes and left shitty comments in Herc's thread about it. However, I was having a slow day so I tried the first two again on demand and became totally hooked. I actually looking forward to new episodes now. So if all you watched was the first ep, try the first few on demand and see what you think. It's not going to be for everyone, but the first ep is not a fair assessment of the series thus far.

Ilana's character got killed, by Titus. She was gonna die anyway, then confessed to Titus she poisoned Titus's wife (the former slave he had rescued). He went Tyrol on her and choked her ass to death right then and there.

Rome Season 2(felt rushed at the end?)

    by professor murder

Well, we're all lucky there even was a 2nd season of ROME. Initially cancelled after in pre-production of the 2nd season, ROME was deemed too expensive(those that watched the show should agree it didn't look cheap), HBO stopped production. Good thing that in the end, they decided to fulfill the 2nd season they had in place, although, a third was out of question and hopefully they go all out in the movie mentioned.

    Yes, clearly expensive

    by jaka

I've always assumed that's why the season sets are so damned expensive.

    ROME S2

    by blackwood

It felt rushed because they crammed 4 years worth of story into twelve episodes. Which I always felt made it one of the very best seasons of any show ever. HBO/Showtime is generally better at having focused seasons - a lot of shows just fuck around for half their run. But Rome was all in, all the time. I would have liked more, but they didn't waste a second.I also agree that Carnivale got shafted. I only caught up with the series on DVD and while the first season was a bit meh, the second season was mind-boggling. So fucking good. And it ended, closing off the arc that began in the first, sort of, but fuckadoodle they set up for something great that will never happen.

    by sithtastic

Yeah, I know I'm a total band waggon jumper right? Nevertheless, one of the most disappointing cancellations in recent HBO history had to be the premature 2nd season offing of Rome. Granted, they knew they'd been axed going in, there were still too many compelling storylines, particularly those of Titus Pullo and Octvian that I would like to see played out as sharp contrast between the Ceasar/Lucius Vorenus dynamic of seasons 1 & 2. Here's hoping they do the characters justice.

    by white_vader

I haven't seen this show, but if you're gonna say they're ripping off streams of blood at least think a little further back than bloody (haw!) 300! I'd say LONE WOLF & CUB flicks & that whole school of Japanese stuff. Jesus somea youse guys are Philistines (haw!)...

that Rome ended quickly. If it lasted longer, they intended to include Christianity in the story. I am sick and tired of Christianity being pushed into films and tv shows about early Rome. It just wasn't important in the 1st and 2nd century. But, what can you espect. As Sherri Shephard of The View once said, "Jesus came first [before Greeks and Romans]. "I don't think anything predated Christians."

    Vorenus lives?

    by captzeep

Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo are the Laurel and Hardy of swords and sandals, and I love those knuckleheads and their crazy adventures, but bringing Vorenus back from the dead just doesn't cut it. They didn't *show* him dying, but they didn't show Tony Soprano dying either.

I was half- ribbing. Guess it didn't come through. I guess it's the heavy colour grading on top of the samurai bloodstreams!

But on that note, Catzeep, - Vorenus & Pullo are sorta closer to the bickering peasants from Kurosawa's Hidden fortress. Which is of course where the whole R2 and 3PO thing comes from too.

We never saw Vorenus actually, die, and that was left ambigous intentionally by the maker sof the series. Why? In the hopes they could pick it up later as a movie. I mean, really, our assuption that Vorenus died is just that, an assumption. But if he lives in the movie, it can easily be sold due to the "ambiguity" of his "death" at the end of season two.So, i say...

The second best HBO series next to Deadwood so I'm totally stoked. I couldn't get through the first episode of Spartacus, so bad I don't even no where to start. I'm curious about how they'll resurrect Vorenus although you never actually saw him die just Pulo telling Octavian that he was dead. Technically Vorenus was a traitor for supporting Anthony so Pulo would have lied to protect him. Awesome. 13!

    by anino

Bugger Hollywood and their remakes--all they need to do is read up on Ancient Rome and there is a WEALTH of material there--not just Caesar's time, but Marius and Sulla before him--heck, even the Young Pompey had a heck of a story to tell...too bad Rome didn't get into Crassus and his campaigns against Spartacus AND against the Parthians...there is SO MUCH there. Still...this is excellent. Oh, yeah...I forgot...THIIRTEEENN!!!

A prequel would be fantastic for Rome

    by spike fan

The first civil war between Marius and Sulla. The Cataline conspiracy and The rise of Pompey and Caeser as well as the birth of the Mafia style gangs and wars between Clodius and Milo.
The idea that they could not make a brilliant prequel story out of this would be absurd.

I've also become a fan of that show, and it's gotten better each week. Yeah it's blatantly ripping off 300, but it's unabashed pulp and has been unpredictable week to week. Come on it's got titties, fucking, and gruesome killings galore, what's not to like?

Then you haven't seen much from the BBC. Try "Warriors", "Perfect Strangers", "Bodies", "Conspiracy", "Outlaws", "Conviction" or "Being Human" (which you seem determined to ignore). Besides which, I liked "Rome" but not as much as "The Wire" or "The Sopranos". And "Deadwood" easily tops them all.

    re: TheManWhoCan

    by muki

I’d disagree with your assertion that Spartacus is just “childish trash not far removed from WWF wrestling.” I guess as you only watched part of the first episode I can understand why you might feel that way. I didn’t particularly like the first episode either. But look beyond the stylised graphic novel violence and the awkward CGI and you’ll see a show that features some really outstanding performances, particularly from John Hannah and John Mensah. Also, the political manoeuvring and the interweaving plot lines are much more sophisticated than you might think

For example, look at episode 8. The narrative is the classic struggle of the alpha male and documents Crixus’ struggle to regain his position as the dominant alpha male in the ludus. This is visualised by his challenge to Spartacus (the man who has replaced him as the champion) and his inability (initially) to satisfy Lucretia sexually anymore. It’s the classic alpha male struggle that has been referenced in literature for hundreds of years. Were those themes of male physical and sexual power not already obvious enough for you, the episode even ends by showing one of the new gladiators having his penis amputated, juxtaposing quite literally the castration and demise of one ambitious alpha male with the return to glory of a former alpha male. Had this been written by Joss Whedon people, particularly on this site, would be all over it declaring it’s narrative genius. But because it's a show produced by the guys who did Xena and airs on the Starz network, I think people dimiss it too easily.

So I guess I’m urging you to give it another go and not be too hasty in your judgement. It's not quite up to the standard of Rome but then again what is? Comparisons were inevitable given the subject matter. There’s a lot to like here and it’s certainly not ‘childish.’
