Hercules Thinks Tonight’s Big Baby Halpert Installment Of THE OFFICE Is The Series’ Funniest Episode Of The Season So Far!!

Published at:  Mar 04, 2010 4:27:59 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Thursday brings the big hour-long episode dealing with Pam’s delivery of Halpert spawn, and I say it’s the funniest installment of “The Office” all season.

Some things I love about “The Delivery” can be found on my new minor-spoiler Twitter account (beware also minor spoilers possibly for upcoming shows like “Parks and Recreation,” “Community,” “Caprica,” “Breaking Bad,” etc. etc.).

I will say here that Dwight, Kevin and Angela are in rare form this week.

Tonight:

“The Delivery, Part One”
Written by Danny Chun
Directed by Seth Gordon
Pam’s contractions begin but she and Jim are determined to wait it out as long as possible so they can have more time at the hospital. Meanwhile the rest of the office tries to distract Pam from the pain with food and entertainment.

“The Delivery, Part Two”
Written by Charlie Grandy
Directed by Harold Ramis
Michael anxiously waits for Pam and Jim’s baby to be born. Back at the office, Erin makes Andy jealous when she has lunch with Kevin.

Next Week:

“St. Patrick’s Day”
Written by Jonathan Hughes
Directed by Randall Einhorn
Michael thinks he impressed Jo only to discover someone else in the office caught her eye. Meanwhile, Dwight makes trouble on Jim’s first day back from paternity leave. Andy and Erin have an interesting first date.

March 18:

“New Leads”
Written and directed by Brent Forrester
When the sales staff lets Sabre’s new “sales is king” policy get to their heads, Michael hides their new, prized leads.

9 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

on the whole, it's been really, really shaky. The premier was hilarious; then it went straight to dullsville with Jim-centric, job episodes, and the laughs have been very sporadic since.

    by laserhead

I thought Tim and Dawn were the weakest thing about the UK version, and the ending where they got together was bullshit. I far prefer Jim and Pam to the two of them, but they're also the most boring part of this show. In the US version, the other characters far outshine the cast of the UK version; the US version is just something vastly different, with well over 100 episodes, whereas the UK had about the equivalent of 15. It's apples and oranges to compare the two at this point.

    by detectivemills82

Am I the only one who's glad to get the "baby" episode out of the way tonight? I thought it was going to be the finale episode. I just can't get into baby humor. I don't want to see Jim with baby vomit sprayed on him. Or giving a look to the camera when changing the kid's diaper. I just don't get into it.

Can't believe in one season we have a 1 hour wedding episode and a 1 hour baby episode. I know they're going to screw me over and have them have a 2nd baby next season.

I liked it so much more when they were pursuing each other. Those awkward moments when they see each other dating other people. Those brief moments when they start to show that they're into each other, catch themselves, then try to change the subject. THAT was fun to watch. Now we've Pam hunched over with a pregnant suit. Now we get the delivery room humor. Jim will get nauseous and pass out. Or Michael will. Pam will be giving birth and yelling for pain meds or yelling at Jim. Blah blah blah. Is it next week yet?

    by canuck815

is it leads Michael into being the kooky awkward Michael I hate to see him as sometimes. I don't want to see him trying to get into the hospital room as Pam delivers, that shit has already been done with the wedding less than a few months ago.
Pam and Jim were more relatable when they just kind of quietly took Michael's abuse and made fun of him behind his back, but now as a result of Michael becoming too much of a child, they treat him like one. Now it seems like they're the ones running the office, which kinda defeats the whole point of the show (at least in my eyes).

The problem with this show is that it's turning into a chick show. It's just getting lame. I still watch it in hopes that it's going to get back to where it needs to, but I don't see it happening. It's still funny, but I'm sick of all the relationship crap. by rockmsockm

Seriously. We all know the original was well done--and spawned the US version--but enough already. I have watched the UK office several times and I was *never* as entertained as I was watching some of the best US episodes. Must we continue to genuflect at the altar of a UK show that didn't make it past 2 seasons? On a side note: It is quite fair that the current US Office has taken some steps backwards.

The show is nothing compared to what it was in seasons 2 and 3. Season 2 in particular had episodes like Booze Cruise, The Dundies, and Casino Night, which I think are some of the best single episodes of any sitcom ever. The only reason I still check out the show is because I'm hoping they somehow recapture that again.

Explain to me why a documentary crew filming office workers would follow the employees to a hospital and continue to film them while they deal with breastfeeding issues. The premise of the show has been shot to hell (like when Jim and Pam went to Dwight's farm), and now it's just a formulaic and tired sitcom. Ten seconds of Michael making fart sounds? That's funny why? It makes me sad. I used to love this show.

As much as there are things to criticize about the show, this one seems silly. The documentary is about the people who work in the office. When they have big life moments (Phyllis marrying Bob Vance) they capture it as part of the people and their lives.

If I recall, however, that was the first time the "camera crew" followed them about into their personal lives (in a non-workplace context). And that came along at the end of Season 3. I had similar issues with the dinner with Jan and Michael at their place. It just doesn't make sense within the context of the show. Besides, there's a huge difference between the camera crew filming a wedding...and a camera crew filming something as personal as struggling to breastfeed a newborn. It just rings counterfeit.

Jan and Michael's dinner I agree with. But I think the breast thing felt like a smaller part of what they were filming, rather then being the whole episode.

I can see your point with it being a little odd for them to film (maybe not so much film, but include in the final cut), but it seems like a fairly small thing to get on them about, in the face of bigger issues with the show's writing.

    It's fair to say

    by watch_the_world_burn

that the US Office has been dragging for a while. I think it's a problem inherent in the 20+ episodes-per-season style of programming for certain American tv shows. The reason the UK version is generally considered to be superior is that the quality per episode is much better than the US. This is helped by the deliberate capping of the show to two series/seasons (12 episodes + xmas special) - ever since John Cleese did it 30 years ago with Fawlty Towers some BBC productions have followed suit with brilliant results (The Office, Extras, State of Play, Life On Mars etc.) Also if you look at some of the best tv shows ever like The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Mad Men etc. they have all benefited from shorter length seasons (12-13 episodes) - coupled with great writing - it allows the writers to move the plot along at a quicker pace, which means more happens per episode.
When 22 episodes is considered a bare minimum, you start getting problems such as quality being inconsistent (as writers struggle with having enough ideas to fill each episode), story arcs are dragged out as they try to sustain them over a longer period of time, or you get the feeling the writers are making stuff up as they go along (since they cannot/will not map out the arc concisely). There are exceptions to the rule (West Wing, 24, Lost), but that is because they counter the problem - for example The West Wing had a wealth of source material, the real-time style of 24 confines the plot to a 24-hour arc so it simply becomes a matter of sustaining the action, and Lost has (allegedly) been carefully mapped out to the last episode.
Sorry to rant so long, but I really think tv shows are helped, rather than hindered, by shorter seasons, and shorter runs altogether (as long as they're planned that way). All that being said, I'm still a fan of the US Office - I like how it went with in a different direction to the UK version, and gave each of the office workers a unique personality - longer seasons can benefit from greater character development at least.

Remember how often Jan used to ask if the crew was filming and look at the camera followed by ducking out of the shot? They have turned more into Modern Family, where they are filmed in the documentry style, but do not aknowledge it except in the interviews.

Friends version of Office -- nailed it.

    by jimbojones123

This show has become a marketing interpretation of what it used to be. They have warped anything that was original into the same old cliches that have plagued sitcoms for decades. I expected the elevator to break when they went down. Pam was insanely stupid in this episode and ha become nothing more than wallpaper on this show. She still is going to have an affair with Michael at some point. It will NOT be funny.

The deer joke was one of my favorites from the episode. But maybe I'm the only one who thought it was funny.

    I liked it.

I also haven't had any problems with the entire season. I think it is still a consistently funny and well-written show, for being in it's 6th season.

Who couldn't love Dwight's escort? Especially when he sticks the police light on top of the car. And the cop pulling him over and and using his name over the PA system, like he's dealt with Dwight many many times before.

  • Funny, we used to worry about this show being renewed for it's next season, now all I pray for is a swift cancellation.

This show peaked when it made it very clear it was interested in pulling the same stunts week after week -- with the same tired conflict of a stern, rigid, corporate-type coming to ruin all Michael's fun -- rather than actually advancing the characters' storylines. And no, I don't count Jim and Pam's ham-handed, saccharine romance. I'm talking moving Michael to corporate back in third season, or actually keeping the Michael Scott Paper Company last year.

And on a Jim and Pam note, like Niles and Daphne in 'Frasier', hasn't NBC learned that taking an exciting, flirty, impossible flirtation and turning it into a happy, problem-free, zero-resistance relationship is nothing but trouble.

Seriously, this show is 'Entourage' bad at this point. Just a pure exercise in self-induldgence and insisting upon one's self.

The whole Thursday night line-up on NBC is just so soft. Give me a real comedy with an edge like 'It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia' or 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

    Jim and Pam....

    by stlost

are a breath of fresh air. They dated, got married, and now have a baby. They didn't cheat on each other, they survived her going to art school in ny. I like that they don't have major conflicts and are the stable pieces in an otherwise dysfunctional office setting.

    Herc, you are so wrong!

    by stabby

Funniest episode was Pam finding out Michael was dating her mom. This episode was subpar at best. Maybe if Michael had gotten involved in the nipple latching it would have been funnier.

I agree it was way over the top

    by smackfu

almost slapstick in parts. The scene of Dwight getting pulled over and chucking medieval weapons out of his car was really silly and uncharacteristic, as was him demolishing the kitchen. The idea of Dwight finding mold in someone's kitchen and going off the handle was right on with his character, but the execution was too over the top for it to be believable. I did however, LOVE the part where they realized Pam had been breastfeeding the wrong baby.

I too really liked the deer joke

    by big jim

However, it might be because just the other day, driving past the Hunt Club in Toronto, I told my sister the story of my brother and I seeing a deer running down the sidewalk towards us.smackfu, "wrong baby" was my favourite bit of the show. That had me laughing well beyond the end of the scene. buffywrestling, I don't think she's Pam's sister (I could be wrong), I think just a friend, the same friend Dwight had a one-night stand with at the wedding.

I thought it was a good episode, but

    by iamnicksaicnsn

Well, technically it wasn't a but. I just wanted to point out how uncomfortable it was to see Jim and Pam fighting over how to take care of the crying baby, the nurse or milk consultant or whatever helping Pam while Jim had to sit and helplessly watch, and the hospital forcefully nudging them out the door. The show hasn't been that difficult to watch in a while, I'm hoping they explore that kind of tension more, for better or for worse.

    "Don't make this difficult Dwight"

    by drewlicious

The fact that the police are familiar with Dwight killed me. Also, how he decided to help Jim and Pam in the creepiest way possible...by breaking in to their house, wrecking their kitchen, and sleeping naked in their bed. Now if only they could have an episode where the cast actually gets to watch the documentary, or documentary series at this point. To be honest its not that unbelievable that the crew has been there that long.....its just hard to swallow that nothing has aired on TLC yet and they're not local celebrities. But, hey its TV fiction and they never get a real profession completely right because its in the interest of a narrative. Ever seen an accurate legal drama? No such thing because the series would be incredibly boring.

They did it on the UK version apparently.

    by iamnicksaicnsn

They really need to incorporate their celebrity in the show somehow. Even if it's local access or something. Maybe in the last season.

it would be WAY fucked up if the characters got to see all of the other characters' talking heads, sneaking around, lies, perversions, illegal activities...I mean, I doubt Creed could even escape jail time if any of his shit were ever aired.let's keep it a non-issue and not worry about it, OK?

UK show could do it cause it knew what it was

    by bass ackwards

It had a mindset of the kind of show it was, a pseudo-doc playing with the tropes of a day-to-day office life, and executed it, ending the show in line with it's developed reality and having mined it's chosen comic theme. The Office never had that, it quickly ran out of workplace observations, spent some time trying to find it's identity and settled on being a new version of Friends, but they're stuck with the pseudo-doc style so whatcha gonna do. Dunder Mifflin will have to hire a few more wacky employees though, they've still got some single people on the show and Pam's family is only so big.
