Mickey Rourke Goes Bad In Tarsem's WAR OF THE GODS!!

Published at:  Mar 03, 2010 11:32:26 AM CST

Merrick here...

Mickey Rourke will play villainous 'King Hyperion' in WAR OF THE GODS, a Greek-myth driven Tarsem Singh film set to roll 'round April.

Story follows a young warrior Theseus who leads his men into battle with the immortal Greek gods to defeat evil elder gods of the Titans in order to save mankind.

...says Variety HERE.

This is Tarsem's first film since THE FALL back in 2006, which was Tarsem's first film since THE CELL way back in 2000.

WAR OF THE GODS is scripted by Jason Keller from a progenitor screenplay by Christian Gudegast. Followers of the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA series may recall an episode called "War of the Gods", which introduced "The Ship of Lights", Patrick Macnee's 'Count Iblis' character, and hinted that the human survivors from the Colonies might be pawns in some grander metaphysical scheme. That episode...has nothing to do with Tarsem's new movie other than sharing its title.

Speaking of which: WAR OF THE GODS? CLASH OF THE TITANS? I mean...

    The reason this movie is...

    by soundblaster

...even being considered for production is quite transparent. I imagine 'Clash of the Titans' is tracking well, and Relativity Media is attempting to cash in on a projected blockbuster. The choice of Tarsem Singh as director, however, gives one hope that the visuals will be something to behold. Singh mentioned recently how the film's aesthetic will be inspired by Renaissance painting. If he holds true to his vision, at the very least, the film will satisfy the eyes.

    Awesome B-grade fantasy flicks...

    by thedarklinglord

It's about damn time we had a resurgence of the genre. I'm not talking about direct-to-video or SyFy Channel shitfests, but theater releases that don't aspire to be epic masterpieces or Academy Award contenders, badass fantasy-adventure movies that make no apologies for the gleeful gratuity of gore and jiggling titties and mindless carnage and just plain dumb fun they offer. Back in the day we had the Conan movies, Beastmaster, Clash of the Titans, etc. Now we're getting stuff like Outlander (which had a bit more sci-fi than I wanted, but its heart was in the right place), Clash of the Titans remake, Solomon Kane, and we all know a God of War movie WILL be made (probably after suing the people behind this War of the Gods movie). As long as none of them pussy out and try to rope in a wider audience with a family-friendly PG-13 rating, I'm really looking forward to this new wave of shameless fantasy schlock. Release the Kraken, bitches!

Has anyone who really appreciates The Cell like me been able to watch the DVD sequel? I imagine that it's just a lame continuation of the characters (recasted) and plot devices, with either a half-ass rip-off of the surrealist visuals or no attempt at all to be creative. I do find just the premise of it interesting, but I would not sit through a lame attempt. Please enlighten.

Yeah, Tarsem's visual style will probably kick ass but does it need to be so transparently a CotT hodge-podge ripoff? Plenty of the original myths have enough bizarre fantasy, kinky sex, violence, and sheer WTF quotient to suit modern pleb sensibilities. Or for something new with brains and spectacle why not Dan Simmon's Ilium? Now that would be kick ass. I wonder if Tarsem can do epic action in addition to beautiful but static tableaux.

How much money and cajones would a God of War movie take?

    by soylentmean

In order to truly bring Kratos to the big screen and not suck I think it would literally take Avatar-like funding. The scope of the games plus the unavoidable gore and requisite carnage would involve so much money, I just don't see it happening. Unless Clash of the Titans does serious bank. But I just don't see a film of God of War living up to the awesome that the games have already provided, in an interactive format.

Soylent--you're prob right about needing Avatar-type $$$. It definiely would be awesome to see and could really make bank if enough care were put into it (c.f. 300). For some reason, people seem to like the violence in fantasy flicks to be either abstracted or stylized and GoW definitely fits the bill.

The ones you've been wearing since you were getting your asses whooped back in grade school. If the movie isn't the cinematic equivalent of a pinball machine- that is full of maniacal action and weird sound and bright colors- then you automatically object. That's why none of you idiotic nerds liked The Cell. It hurt your delicate sensitivities. Go cry on your mommy's shoulder. onezeroone, getting to you late/Re: Heavy Rain

    by skimn

I would say that it is definately influenced by Seven, in terms of the constant rain and the music which is very moody. And as a "movie", it plays like a well done B movie, a little cliche at times (the investigating cop is the violent hothead, the FBI agent a smart profiler...with a secret..), but compelling. And if you're a parent, it will get to you.

I'm glad to see that a lot of TB's see

that all Tarsem is, is a glorified cinematographer at best. There are plenty out there who have also made good movies but Tarsem has NOT. Both The Cell and The Fall were terrible terrible movies. This disguise of being really intellectual movies is just bullshit. They were both crap!

    Am I the only person

    by inkingeekx

In the world that HATES the god of war games? The story is not engaging, the gameplay is repetitive, and the complete disregard to Greek mythology is a tad upsetting.

Oh yeah, about the GOW movie, stop salivating

    by inkingeekx

cuz u know that if a film is made, Uwe Boll will direct, he will somehow convince a really good actor or two to star in it, and it will still suck...

if you think The Fall is a terrible movie, you are a confused person, man. that movie has amazing visuals, but that is NOT all there is to it. if that's all you got out of it, you have a really short attention span.

I hear what your saying man but seriously I don't have a small attention span. I hated The Cell but I gave The Fall a watch cause I heard good things about it. However, I seriously couldn't sit through it. Visuals is not everything, I will quite happilly sit through a poorly shot movie if the story engages me. If the visuals are there then that's a bonus. This guy seriously can't tell a story in an engaging way. I have absolutely no clue what that movie was about. I remember them making a big deal about how he shot everything for real and that very little CG was used. I mean who gives a shit. Use CG if you have to, if it makes your life easier to tell a story. Like anyone cares!

So everyone holds it against Tarsem that his only skill seems to

    by rob_klassen

Even if that's so, it doesn't matter. It's okay if he's only good at creating pretty images because then that's what you turn to him for. That's his specialty. You want awe-inspiring sights, you play The Cell or The Fall. You want your emotions effected, you play some other filmmakers movie. Simple as that. You don't hold it against Tarsem Singh if pretty, colorful images are his only forte; you appreciate him for it. Without him, we'd be bereft of a lot of amazing, memorable images.

As far as I can tell, No one is criticising his ability

    by d o o d

to make nice looking images. He just can't make good narrative in a movie.
