Mickey Rourke Goes Bad In Tarsem's WAR OF THE GODS!!
Merrick here...
Mickey Rourke will play villainous 'King Hyperion' in WAR OF THE GODS, a Greek-myth driven Tarsem Singh film set to roll 'round April.
Story follows a young warrior Theseus who leads his men into battle with the immortal Greek gods to defeat evil elder gods of the Titans in order to save mankind.
...says Variety HERE.
This is Tarsem's first film since THE FALL back in 2006, which was Tarsem's first film since THE CELL way back in 2000.
WAR OF THE GODS is scripted by Jason Keller from a progenitor screenplay by Christian Gudegast. Followers of the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA series may recall an episode called "War of the Gods", which introduced "The Ship of Lights", Patrick Macnee's 'Count Iblis' character, and hinted that the human survivors from the Colonies might be pawns in some grander metaphysical scheme. That episode...has nothing to do with Tarsem's new movie other than sharing its title.
Speaking of which: WAR OF THE GODS? CLASH OF THE TITANS? I mean...

Better than first
-
Just make that movie instead. Kratos is fuck awesome!
-
Tarsem Singh or whatever his name is definitely makes some interesting films.
-
lame, lame who really cares, dont name drop the cell like it was a good movie. suck. sorry but this story shouldnt be news.
-
...it won't roll around again for another twenty or thirty years...next time in Amazing Glistening Sweat-O-Vision.
-
i'd rather hear about germaine jackson's son weilding a stun gun. does he dual wield i wonder? check out southland everyone, its back y'all
-
Will own all of them. Make it hard R, and keep Kratos a bad mother fucker, the blood, the gore, and you will have a winner. And don't compare it to Spartacus the TV series. Done right, it would be amazing.
-
Zzzzzzzzzzzz . . . .
-
I wonder if Mickey will have bad hair in this one as well?
-
hehe. Seriously, he has an incredible eye like an artist, and creates some imagery with his films that is totally original and memorable. The Fall was beautiful and had substance as well.
-
I mean, more or less. Whatever. Rourke is a total badass, he'll bring the pain.
-
Or did I dream it?
-
Visionary director who should think about directing Elric by Moorcock.
-
He's put out two really amazing looking films and I can't wait to see what he does next. He would have been my pick for Dune or if they ever do Stranger In A Strange Land.
-
...even being considered for production is quite transparent. I imagine 'Clash of the Titans' is tracking well, and Relativity Media is attempting to cash in on a projected blockbuster. The choice of Tarsem Singh as director, however, gives one hope that the visuals will be something to behold. Singh mentioned recently how the film's aesthetic will be inspired by Renaissance painting. If he holds true to his vision, at the very least, the film will satisfy the eyes.
-
Hey, hasn't the title of this been changed to "Dawn of War"?
-
...and then he gets a movie on his own. fuck kevin sorbo = homo herkules!
-
I'm into this! Better this than God Of War too, namely because this has Tarsem directing it, & a God Of War movie would not.
-
I can't believe they keep funding this guy. The Cell was complete ASS and The Fall was just soooooo boring I fell asleep. I mean the guy has a good visual style, but where's the film making skills...???? Where I ask you?!!!
-
The fact that he was able to pull out a smart, great looking film after the universally panned The Cell is particularly impressive. He took one on the chin but kept on fighting.
-
Tarsem has my money every time. That film was a work of art. I would love to see him tackle China Mieville's The Scar though.
-
But unfortunately, any movie about Greek Gods and monsters is going to seem like a Clash of the Titans ripoff at this point. But did they REALLY have to give it such a similar title that it sounds like something Asylum would make after Transmorphers and I Am Omega?
-
Hey, whaddaya mean it's not based on George Perez's WAR OF THE GODS mini-series?
-
So Say We All.
-
I, for one, love him and think he can make greek mythology as twisted and horrifying as it should be.
-
and Pierre Morell and about 99.9% of the motherfucks in Hollywood.

It's about damn time we had a resurgence of the genre. I'm not talking about direct-to-video or SyFy Channel shitfests, but theater releases that don't aspire to be epic masterpieces or Academy Award contenders, badass fantasy-adventure movies that make no apologies for the gleeful gratuity of gore and jiggling titties and mindless carnage and just plain dumb fun they offer. Back in the day we had the Conan movies, Beastmaster, Clash of the Titans, etc. Now we're getting stuff like Outlander (which had a bit more sci-fi than I wanted, but its heart was in the right place), Clash of the Titans remake, Solomon Kane, and we all know a God of War movie WILL be made (probably after suing the people behind this War of the Gods movie). As long as none of them pussy out and try to rope in a wider audience with a family-friendly PG-13 rating, I'm really looking forward to this new wave of shameless fantasy schlock. Release the Kraken, bitches!
-
cause those people are sell outs
-
Kind of like Terry Gilliam crossed with 80's perfume commercials
-
Was one of the biggest pieces of shit I have ever sat through. Even the beer I snuck into the theater couldn't make that shit enjoyable.
-
WTF???? Is there a difference?
-
Was there a closeout on Greek gods or something?
-
Zeus: "So .. you're married."
Summer: "Yeah. Crazy, huh?"
Zeus: "Release the Kraken!!" -
...sword and sandle shlock out there right now...every episode so far has surprised me with unexpected levels of violence and gore.Full frontal female and male nudity, orgies, lesbianism, hellish underground cage-matches, naked Xena...Do not watch sober.
Do not watch alone.Do not watch with another guy. Can't wait for the next episode. -
Zeus: "So .. you're married."
Summer: "Yeah. Crazy, huh?"
Zeus: "that's OK, I prefer boys..preferably with extra extra-virgin olive oil on the side." -
YES!!! Add Kraken, subtract restraint!
-
...gods will war. Yawn. Oh Mickey...
-
Or director? That is another story, and one he is not qualified to tell.
-
Visually. Sorry for the tease.
-
...Mickey Rourke in 3D(you know it's gonna happen.
-
Clash of the Titans is about a war of the gods.
War of the Gods is about a clash of the titans.
(Yes there is a difference. The Titans bore Zeus, who defeated them to be King.) -
I wrote a really vicious review for it, back in 2000 when I had my own website with that type of thing on it. I even called it a blog which made sense to almost nobody in the summer of 2000. Holy loving fuck I am old and still coming to AICN on a daily basis, ten years later.
-
Even greek gods are not immune from Summer's charms ...
-
Where have the years gone?
-
I am also writing a new movie about, um, Narcissus, yeah, that's it, cuz the dude can FLY, you know? Anyway, he helps the gods fight other older gods, to like, save the people on his home island. Something like that. Hey, what's James Cameron up to these days?
-
Is a good movie. True! .... get past the casting choices and its damn good. Really.
-
Yeah, casting choices were questionable at least, but holy fuck did that movie make my eye cock stand at attention. I'd like to see Tarsem try his hand at a live action version of Fantastic Planet. That, or like someone else said above, Dune.
-
You're such a youngun!
-
I believe Tarsem may also suck
-
... evil enemy to Queen Cahuenga and her brave army of La Cienagan warriors!
-
Has anyone who really appreciates The Cell like me been able to watch the DVD sequel? I imagine that it's just a lame continuation of the characters (recasted) and plot devices, with either a half-ass rip-off of the surrealist visuals or no attempt at all to be creative. I do find just the premise of it interesting, but I would not sit through a lame attempt. Please enlighten.
-
Why do I feel like Mickey Rourke is going to shit on his career revival by taking shitty roles like the 1st time he was famous?
-
It feels like years!

Could be better than a GOD OF WAR film masquerading as a remake.
by monkey_king
known as CLASH OF THE TITANS.
-
That is good.
I am happy to see the man is keeping busy. Hope to see a slew of good flicks with Rourke in them. -
My eyeballs will be gloriously fucked and thumbs will callous to stone when I'm glued to my PS3 experiencing God Of War 3 in less than 2 weeks. If you've played the demo...you know..
-
I'm 3/4's of the way through and can't wait to try it again. And yes, I've heard an adaptation is in the works for that also.
-
BOZOZUKU FTW!
-
Yeah, Tarsem's visual style will probably kick ass but does it need to be so transparently a CotT hodge-podge ripoff? Plenty of the original myths have enough bizarre fantasy, kinky sex, violence, and sheer WTF quotient to suit modern pleb sensibilities. Or for something new with brains and spectacle why not Dan Simmon's Ilium? Now that would be kick ass. I wonder if Tarsem can do epic action in addition to beautiful but static tableaux.

How much money and cajones would a God of War movie take?
by soylentmean
In order to truly bring Kratos to the big screen and not suck I think it would literally take Avatar-like funding. The scope of the games plus the unavoidable gore and requisite carnage would involve so much money, I just don't see it happening. Unless Clash of the Titans does serious bank. But I just don't see a film of God of War living up to the awesome that the games have already provided, in an interactive format.
-
Soylent--you're prob right about needing Avatar-type $$$. It definiely would be awesome to see and could really make bank if enough care were put into it (c.f. 300). For some reason, people seem to like the violence in fantasy flicks to be either abstracted or stylized and GoW definitely fits the bill.
-
His feature films suck...he puts visual concepts over story.

slooowly ripping giant eyeballs from sockets, tearing heads off with bare hands...an absolute hard R (which would make 300 look like a kiddie film), which would keep the Avatar-like business away.
-
why not make a true Theseus film where he battles the Minotaur and beds King Minos' daughter and such?
-
have NOT seen The Fall. the story and character in that movie was astonishingly good, and the movie was just unbelievable. people like Colt1240981049813 haven't seen it, or if they have, and still think that, they are mentally handicapped. The Fall was one of the best movies to come out in the last decade, and almost no one saw it. it's a tragedy.

Playing a terrorist named "Stavros" Reflect.
-
Coming from a fellow movie fan, what you make of its story, plot and such cinematic points? I don't mind QTE game, but is the plot engaging enough?

I'm there

Jaffe, creator of God of War, is already bugging Sony to sue. I'll admit it's a really dull and familiar title, but if Tarsem is doing another film I will watch it.
-
Fact: He's made one film or more a year since 1979. 2007 is the only year he is absent in film.
-
it will without a doubt be beautiful.
-
The Fall alone makes me feel really good about this project. I hated The Cell, but by god it gad some amazing scenes. The Fall is just a masterpiece plain and simple. He may be a visual stylist but holy FUCK he is absolutely the top of the tree. I honestly rate The Fall in the top 5 of the last decade. I wouldn't even shit on The Cell if Se7en asked for it's money back!
-
I've been reading these talkbacks since 2003 I think and it seems to me that any time a dark gritty or psychologically warped movie is the topic of discussion all of you sensitive nerds get your cotton superhero undies in a knot. The ones you've been wearing since you were getting your asses whooped back in grade school. If the movie isn't the cinematic equivalent of a pinball machine- that is full of maniacal action and weird sound and bright colors- then you automatically object. That's why none of you idiotic nerds liked The Cell. It hurt your delicate sensitivities. Go cry on your mommy's shoulder. But before you do: please, will one of you give some reasons as to why The Cell was a piece of shit- as many of you reffered to it.
-
Predictable that AICN will pimp the big studio remake but likely ignore this.
-
War of the gods: Gods will war!
-
If weve had "Clash of the titans" and now "war of the gods" can we finally get a "Battle of the Planets" movie
-
...is a fantastic game and a prime example of the increasingly blurred line between cinema and video game. A film adaptation would be redundant. As it is, 'Heavy Rain' is a movie, albeit an interactive one. I would suggest the game to anyone with an even casual interest in cinema. And, yes, the story is engaging.
-
...and then realsise what all the hoopla is about, Tarsem is a major talent. The idea of him tackling any kind greek mythology has me drooling at the prospect, there's not danger of this being COT band wagoning - this will be on a whole other level (that is providing he has the same degree of autonomy he had with the Fall).
-
the fall is a great movie
-
Iron Man 2. 13 remake. Hope he will bring some modern day cool to ancient Greece.
-
I would say that it is definately influenced by Seven, in terms of the constant rain and the music which is very moody. And as a "movie", it plays like a well done B movie, a little cliche at times (the investigating cop is the violent hothead, the FBI agent a smart profiler...with a secret..), but compelling. And if you're a parent, it will get to you.
-
that all Tarsem is, is a glorified cinematographer at best. There are plenty out there who have also made good movies but Tarsem has NOT. Both The Cell and The Fall were terrible terrible movies. This disguise of being really intellectual movies is just bullshit. They were both crap!
-
In the world that HATES the god of war games? The story is not engaging, the gameplay is repetitive, and the complete disregard to Greek mythology is a tad upsetting.
-
cuz u know that if a film is made, Uwe Boll will direct, he will somehow convince a really good actor or two to star in it, and it will still suck...
-
if you think The Fall is a terrible movie, you are a confused person, man. that movie has amazing visuals, but that is NOT all there is to it. if that's all you got out of it, you have a really short attention span.
-
I hear what your saying man but seriously I don't have a small attention span. I hated The Cell but I gave The Fall a watch cause I heard good things about it. However, I seriously couldn't sit through it. Visuals is not everything, I will quite happilly sit through a poorly shot movie if the story engages me. If the visuals are there then that's a bonus. This guy seriously can't tell a story in an engaging way. I have absolutely no clue what that movie was about. I remember them making a big deal about how he shot everything for real and that very little CG was used. I mean who gives a shit. Use CG if you have to, if it makes your life easier to tell a story. Like anyone cares!

in a motherfuckin heartbeat.

by rob_klassen
Even if that's so, it doesn't matter. It's okay if he's only good at creating pretty images because then that's what you turn to him for. That's his specialty. You want awe-inspiring sights, you play The Cell or The Fall. You want your emotions effected, you play some other filmmakers movie. Simple as that. You don't hold it against Tarsem Singh if pretty, colorful images are his only forte; you appreciate him for it. Without him, we'd be bereft of a lot of amazing, memorable images.
-
to make nice looking images. He just can't make good narrative in a movie.
