SPACE INVADERS May Soon March Back & Forth (And Back & Forth) Across Movie Screens!!

Published at:  Mar 03, 2010 11:34:04 AM CST

Merrick here...

Warners is looking to set-up a SPACE INVADERS movie under producer Mark Gordon (SPEED, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, 2012 & TV's ARMY WIVES and GREY'S ANATOMY).

Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature rights to the landmark shooter from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game. If the rights issues all work out, the project would bring on Hollywood fixtures Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady as producers.

...says L.A. Times HERE.

I've owned nearly every home iteration of this game (Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Super Nintendo, N64, XBOX 360, etc.) and played the arcade version incessantly. So, a part of me is nostalgically, illogically dying to see what they come up with here. I hope there's a graphical frame around the movie screen that makes the screen look like the portal of the old arcade game, and I think it would be super-cool to see columns of advancing aliens march back and forth...endlessly...in Digital 3-D...as a cannon shoots up at 'em from the bottom of the screen...while the audience leans left —> right —> left —> right shouting "That one!" and "There! There!" and "Hurry!"'' You know you can imagine that...

Worst idea since the Battleship movie. Both of these movies will not resemble what they are "based on". Name recognition has never saved anything from being a steaming pile. But Transformers 2 made a ton of money so studios know people will go see them.

    by dasher

A short film - "Against the Wall." It will be about 7-8 minutes. A science fiction piece. We're going for a Gattaca/Minority Report look and a Twilight Zone feel (cerebral, quiet). We hope to finish this summer. We shot on greenscreen, but the CG is taking a long time to get done. Was hoping to get it into Comic-Con, but that ain't gonna happen because we've had a lot of delays. Hopefully we can get it into some festivals. I'll keep you guys posted on how things go.

This is beyond parody, one of those do I laugh or do I cry moments? If they want to make a movie of a game why not Strip Poker? That would make a much more interesting movie. Maybe Bill Murray can star in it (Space Invaders, not Strip Poker -- we really don't want to go there). And be killed horribly right at the start. I might pay to see that.

Space invaders extreme 1 and 2 on the DS were amazing games. Highly recomended. I think the DS versions were better than the 360 version to whoever posted about it above. As for the movie I think that as long as they make all overboard and extreme, you know what I meant just full on crazy music and effects and story I'm watching it. Make it a "what the fu** am I watching?" kind of movie. A no holes barred full on woah! of a movie. Thats my hope for this movie I suppose.
