The Latest DR WHO Movie Rumor!

Published at:  Sep 21, 1999 3:42:16 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. Well... I greatly prefer this rumor to the rumors that Paul "I make shit" Anderson is involved. Of course... This is equally as weird as the rumors about Paul Anderson and Morgan Freeman, that have seemingly been making the rounds. Though... I would really have to question the concept of putting a complete guerilla filmmaker in charge of what should be a fairly big budget sci-fi film. It just seems like an odd match. And I'm sure there will be fans that adore the concept of a Patrick Stewart/Dr Who. But... as this is an alleged scoop with a 'payoff' in November... heh... Wait and see. Don't go getting all fired up yet. This could be one of those... John Woo directing the next BATMAN type of rumors....

Harry & Glen,

Just thought I'd drop you a line from the UK. Read an interesting news
snippit on the Channel 4's teletext service this morning 21/09/99 about the
new Dr. Who film.

According to the report the BBC are talking to the director of The Blair
Witch Project about involvment in a new Dr. Who film. The film that has a
"budget" of ?14 Million, according to the report, and is trying to get a
big Holywood star to be the Doctor. Patrick Stewart is the name given, and
I think it may be an interesting option... Anyway, they are reporting that
an official announcement is due sometime in November.

As I say this comes from the Channel 4 Teletext system, and they have been
pretty good in the past for bits of Movie/TV news.

Nothing good will come of this

    by pulpculture

Big budgets, big stars, people who make movies for less than the price of a Chevy Nova? This isn't "Dr. Who." This is bollocks. If they're not going to give Paul McGann another shot, then Gary Oldman is the only actor for the part. Period. And give the writing and directing duties to someone who (a) can write and direct and (b) understands science fiction. Nicholas Meyer is the man for the job.

    Budget

    by daft mole

Fourteen million Dollars is an awesome budget for Doctor Who - think of the Gravel Pit they could buy for that. All those eggbox spaceships too! Mental. they could even get a new Power Station to Run around in.

The whole POINT was it was cheap
and cheerful and we didn't care.
    .
I might as well kick it of by saying Tom Baker was the best Doc,
with scripts the very end of Peter Davidson's time a close second .

DwD: I Don't Believe This Rumor... Here's Why...

    by dwdunphy

"Blair Witch" was credited as having two directors (though neither did so in the traditional sense). The rumor speaks of the director in singular, so it would have been important to have stated which director was involved and which wasn't. Therefore, this report seems to have rendered itself useless.

There have been Doctor Who movie reports for at least 12 years now, and none of them have panned out. This one won't either.

(Stewart would be cool but I kind of like the idea of Rowan Atkison, who played the Doctor in a short for the U.K.'s Comic Relief.)

You know what, a big studio won't be interested in this because it doesn't pan out to a wide audience demographic. Like one poster above wrote: fuggedaboudit.

    by cutshaw

In my experience, Teletext is a very unreliable source for movie news. Take everything you hear from them with a pinch of salt. In fact, they usually just recycle news already reported on the Internet on sites like this one.
I'm not saying this rumor isn't true, I'm just saying don't get too carried away just yet!!

    Doctor Huh?

    by drippybits

These seem to be some of the most spastic movie rumors ever, first it's confermed then it's a rumor again, then it's a new series then it's a movie again. Morgan Freeman then Patrick Stewart. Not to mention Hollywood people mesuring police boxes in Scotland! I'll wait for something a little more substantial before I get all worked up. By the way I just watched City of Death, it was excellent,so tell me how is Hollywood going to do better than that, better sfx...I'f I cared about that I never would have watched the show in the first place. I'ts about character, and concept, and great scripts ( well most of the time ). Doctor Who needs a series to bring it's uniqeness to life, a 2hr thrill ride will do nothing that any other "science fiction" movie could'nt do. Besides Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker are irreplaceable.

    by robinp

let's write a really, really shitty "Who" script, pitch it to you-know-who the producer, we can get a doddery old codger like Roddy Piper to play the Doctor (he's not a fine wrestler.....not any more, his in-ring performance sucks as much as that direct to video crap he makes) Michael Pare can be the assistant, Burt Ward can be K-9.

    Roger Daltry

    by jonpaul13

I still think Roger Daltry would be the perfect Doctor. He likes to do sci-fi, he can act (his character in Highlander was fantastic), he has the right look, and a really neat link because of The Who. They could even do a new rendition of the theme (you notice I didn't say new theme, just a new rendition).

    Burt Ward as "K-9"...

    by uncapie

Yes, this is a good idea! It could ressurect his woeful career! Roddy Piper as "The Master" would be a good choice, that way he could wrestle Michael Pare's stunt double throughout the film or we could film it the way Benny Hill used to do with a dummy falling off a building and a quick shot of the actor taking his place when he gets up. Michael Pare' could keep smacking "K-9" on the head the way Hill used to beat up Jackie on the show. Say, all we need now is Monica Lewinsky as the "Love Interest" and that funky Benny Hill music and we've got a hit on our hands! Yahooo!

    patrick stewart on a $22m budget.yeah right

    by u.k. star

now i know patrick loves to do small scale stuff on the cheap, and he'd love to do a "BIG" brit film, but the budget they're talking about would pay for his fee,the film stock and the cups of tea and not much else........and by the way i love patrick stewart he is one of the finest actors on the face of the planet..but anyone who saw the comic relief who must know 1st choice has to be rowan atkinson, with richard e grant a close 2nd...........that said hugh grant was better than paul magann...it may have been the producers but he didn't seem to have a clue what the role was about..............oh and what's this nonsense about younger each regeneration....hello colin baker and sylvester mckoy anyone?

Whuttabout Sean Pertwee? Charles Dance? Mark Addy? It really doesn't matter what the name is on the marquee, as long as they make the story and characters more important than the effects. Oh, I forgot that they don't do that in Hollywood anymore. Actually, if this is to be done right, no American should be allowed any kind of contact with the project. Sorry fellas, but everything that you guys have "Americanized" that was ever once British just sucked. Although there is one Yank who could do justice to the good Doctor: Terry Gilliam

I like Stewart but there are better choices

    by whitey

After Picard and Xavier, I think it would be very dangerous for Patrick Stewart to become attached to yet another sci-fi franchise. It kind of devalues his more "serious" acting career to a degree. Besides, I just think they could do better. Ian McKellen would be good, too, but the same argument could be made for him as I just made about Stewart. Morgan Freeman? Yeah, maybe but I don't see any kind of wackiness to him. Richard E. Grant is certainly an inspired choice. More likely it'll be Anthony Hopkins or Hugh Grant though who'll be approached. Geoffrey Rush, Liam Neeson (maybe), Joseph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, or John Cleese would all be cool, too. As for American actors? Well, how about Jeff Goldblum, Hank Azaria, or Michael Keaton? Aw, hell, I'm going to get creamed now!

    A new rumour

    by riviera

I just heard that the Dr. Who movie is going to be co-directed by Penelope Spheris and Jeremiah Chechick. Paulie Shore will play the Doctor and Elizabeth Berkeley will play the sidekick, plucked from a lapdancing club after she arouses a Cyberman into blowing away half the clientelle. David Spade will play the strip-joint owner who gets posessed by, and becomes, The Master. To retain authenticity, the two directors will be working closely with the Blue Peter team and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop for the "special" fx and synthesized sounds. I've booked my ticket already.

    by the enigma

Hey, I resent the slur you put upon one of Britain's decent directors, who gets to work with crap and manages to churn out some pretty good stuff.
Event Horizon: One of the scariest sci-fi's I have seen in my life, including the likes of seeing Alien when I was but knee high tut grass 'opper.
Mortal Kombat is the best of the video game conversion films without a doubt in my mind and Shopping will always remain his masterpiece.
Admittedly, Soldier is a bit lack lustre, but hey, with a script like that to work with, waddaya expect? huh?

Dr Who - a possible plot.....:-)

    by geordiebert

    Ok,

let's really go for the jugular.

USS Voyager is b*****ing around in the Delta Quadrant, when a small, blue craft appears on the short range sensors, with the words "Police Box" on the side, and a flashing blue light on top. Unresponsive to hails, Janeway orders it to be destroyed, unaware that it was built by the same people who did her hair, and it is in fact, indestructable.

They then tractor the box into Cargo bay 2, where Seven of Nine tries to assimilate it.

When asked to scan it, Harry fails and gives the excuse that this is only his first Starfleet mission.

When she hails B'Elana Torres, Janeway finds her in the clutches of Tom Paris, in the "Grease Monkey" holo-program, so she decides to get really tough and take no prisoners, so she sends in Neelix, who is seduced by K-9, and has an even more inane grin on his face than usual.

Tuvok and Chakotay both agree that this is getting pretty illogical, and they spend the rest of the time trying everything to contact their agents, or at least put a contract on them for getting them involved in this in the first place.

Eventually, the door opens, the Doctor emerges, says that he is the Emergency Holographic Time Lord Program, and asks the nature of the temporal emergency, looks around, says "Oh Shit - wrong TV franchise - this one actually looks like having a budget of more than 50p/series", goes back inside, and the Tardis dematerialises to reappear on a BBC archive Video.

That was good! We could even make it better by having Obi Wan Kenobi drop in, along with some other Star Wars buddies. I'd like to see C3PO kick K-9 across the room for being too annoying. On other note, who mentioned Roger Daltry? That was out of the blue and rather...well, it's definitely got possibilities. Does he even have a job anymore?

I second gingeracrockford and DrippyBits choices of Billy Connolly as the Doctor and Shirley Manson (of Garbage) as the companion. Talk about a wild and crazy movie! It would be the best Doctor Who ever!
    And all Scottish as well.
As a wise man oncve said, "If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP!"
