HOT TUB TIME MACHINE Star Craig Robinson To Host NBC's New LAST COMIC STANDING!!

Published at:  Feb 26, 2010 6:01:58 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

After skipping last year, NBC is bringing back reality competition “Last Comic Standing” this summer with arguably its best host yet: comedian and “Hot Tub Time Machine” star Craig Robinson.

2009 wasn’t the first year NBC went without “Standing,” which started on the network in 2003. The show also sat out 2005 (after squeezing two seasons into 2004).

Prior hosts of the show include show creator Jay Mohr, Anthony Clarke and funny-challenged former veejay Bill Bellamy.

Robinson’s other job at NBC is playing warehouse manager Daryl Philbin on “The Office.” He’s also appeared in a trio of Judd Apatow movies: “Knocked Up,” “Walk Hard,” and “Pineapple Express.”

Encouragingly, NBC alternative programming chief Paul Telegdy told TheWrap.com that this 7th edition will try to bring "credibility" back to the show’s selection process by hiring a trio of stand-up comedians as judges.

Finalists on prior seasons have included Ralphie May, Dave Mordal, Gary Gulman, Kathleen Madigan, Tammy Pescatelli, Bonnie McFarlane, April Macie, Gabriel Iglesias, Amy Schumer, Esther Ku and Doug Benson.

The contest’s six prior winners were Dat Phan, John Heffron, Alonzo Bodden, Josh Blue, Jon Reep and Iliza Shlesinger.

$16.99 per “Office” season!!
(That’s 72% off season five!!)

“Farscape: The Complete Series,” $129.49 last year, is momentarily $59.99. That works out to less than $15 per season!!

Who wanted MORE of this show?

    by carmillavondoom

The last season they tried to broadcast, they didn't even bother running the whole thing!

You're thinking of season three. NBC broadcast the finales of the other five seasons, including the last one.

    Ha ha oops

    by carmillavondoom

Had no idea there were so many seasons. I don't see why they would bother with more of this....seems like a concept more fit for 1990, not 2010.

    Don't do it Craig Robinson!

    by ribbons

Robinson is way too funny to be "the VJ from Last Comic Standing." Unless of course NBC does somehow bring credibility to the show.

    "this 7th edition will..."

    by big jim

7th??!!!??? I thought this show died with the truncated 3rd (all-star, yes season 3 was made up of contestants from the first 2 seasons) edition. Then I saw it come back a few years ago when they had that unknown guy in the monkey mask. Haven't noticed it since then (or before if that hadn't been the 4th) Had no idea it's been on 6 times. Has it been successful, or is this just more proof of how poorly NBC is run - bringing back this badly-beaten corpse of a horse because it's cheap and they can't think of anything else.

never heard of any of the winners

    by titus05

have any of the 6 winners gone on to big things?...I doubt it...which makes the show pointless...least Idol has had its share of 'stars'

    Another chance?

    by frankenberry

So, if I understand correctly, this is the show's third chance to succeed after being canceled twice? Why is this show so special? Just think about all the shows that could have found an audience but weren't even given a full season.

I'd rather see him host SNL

When was the last non NBA player black host anyway?

    Ok I checked

    by pizziola

Last black to host SNL was Tracy Morgan but he doesn't count cuz he's alumni, before that it's Rosario Dawson January 17, 2009 but I think she's mixed so I'm not sure if that counts either; before that it was Forrest Whitaker on February 10, 2007.

    Iliza Shlesinger

    by cinemanimetal

She does a live internet show called The Weakly News that I watch whenever it is on (Usually Tuesday nights). You can see old and new episodes on http://www.thestream.tv/ which also has lots of other great live internet shows! This site really should be more popular. It is doing something that I don't really see other people doing. At least not to the extent that they are. Check it out!

Reality shows can come and go.

    by hercules

When scripted shows get cancelled their writers and actors scatter to new projects. And if you want them back you'll likely discover they're more expensive because the TV show you're trying to reform made them famous, or more famous.

But competition reality shows are easier to reanimate because they generally use a different cast every season.

I'm A Celebrity, The Apprentice, The Bachelor, The Mole, The Amazing Race, Wife Swap, Beauty and the Geek, Road Rules, Fear Factor, Last Comic Standing, they can all come or go at a network's whim.

    This show as ruined

    by dapper swindler

By the usual reality show trappings. Stupid fake drama orchestrated by the producers that has nothing to do with what the show is about. The music, the closeups, the tears - so awful. If they could just have a show without all that I would love it.

    I always feel some guilt...

    by moosemalloy

... watching Iliza Shlesinger because she is so hot yet her comedy is not that great. Yes she says some funny stuff now and then, but overall I find myself paying attention to her because she is attractive and often shows off her sexy body during her internet show. It's so unfair.

    Make It Idol for Stand-Up

    by el fuego

And I'll watch. An hour of stand-up and voting out the suck would be great - but once they get in a house and start voting each other off it just turns to bullshit.

Of promoting Agent Barry Katz's clients? I thought I read that somewhere.

Couldnt agree more. Its a show about COMEDY, make it funny - dont try and inject false drama/conflict and drawn out "who will stay, who will go... find out next" crap.
