‘What Are You??’ Friday Brings CAPRICA 1.6!!

Published at:  Feb 26, 2010 1:52:25 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

I’m plenty enjoying “Caprica,” but I remain hazy on its premise. I thought it was going to be about the creation of the Cylons, but I kinda feel like they created the Cylons in the pilot.

Also, we haven’t yet seen an episode as good as “33” or “Water.”

After tonight, four new episodes remain before “Caprica” enters its first long hiatus. Ten more new hours will follow late this year.

Syfy says of 1.6, titled “There Is Another Sky”:

Tamara befriends gamers while haunting the virtual world; Joseph and Will go on an emotionally revealing fishing trip; Daniel feels compelled to fight for his professional life.

9 p.m. Friday. Syfy.

Follow Herc on Twitter!!

$16.99 per “Office” season!!
(That’s 72% off season five!!)

“Farscape: The Complete Series,” $129.49 last year, is momentarily $59.99. That works out to less than $15 per season!!

    creation of the cylons...

    by bandystract

I think the show is leading up to whats in the first preview clip up there; the creation of the cylons as recognizably intelligent beings but enslaved ones. I thought that scene was cool b/c I didn't expect that tension to be at issue so early in the timeline. Otherwise the show is kind of fuzzy but I really enjoy it. I can't think of another scifi tv show that gets this much latitude to go all out with social speculative fiction about humanity. Or if there is one someone should recommend it to me.

and PARTS of Caprica are good, but its outweighed by the bad, like the dancing cylon scene, the lame chatshow host plot last week, and I have to say the sylistic choices are starting to grate aswell. They have interplanetary travel, mobile phones but the press still take pictures with flash-bulbs?! Really?!
This will be the 3rd week in a row that I give it 'one more week' before quitting. Damn you Cparica, threatening to get all interesting

    by mrmambo

IMDB and SyFy say there's been 4 episodes so far (Pilot, Rebirth, Reins of a Waterfall, Gravedancing), so this one would be 1.5 or 1.4 (if you count the pilot as 1.0).

    by hot_nikks

The best episode of BSG was Exodus hands down. The rescue of New Caprica, Galactica jumping into the atmosphere, the sacrifice of the Pegasus, I get choked up just thinking about it. I really like Caprica so far, but matching Exodus would be nearly impossible.

I thought "33" was an amazing episode of BSG... but it was the *first* episode and it was all downhill from there! Not sure where Caprica is heading yet, but I can't deny they've created a fully realized fictional world, and I'm invested in the fates of the characters.

    Almost seems

    by mecps

as if they're trying to cram too many plots into one show. On the one hand, it increases the chances of hitting on plots and characters that various audience factions can latch onto, but the result so far seems to be that it appears scattered and not sure where it's going. The continuing juxtaposition of Zoe with the cylon prototype is extremely disconcerting (as I'm sure it's intended to be), but will almost certainly become a distraction eventually. So far facet that I'm most impressed by is the fact that Zoe has been totally screwed over (by her terrorist boyfriend, the media, and her own parents) and just to make things even worse, her dad locks her into a cylon limbo. Still not sure I get the whole "I'm kind of a three-parter" deal, but having seen BSG I wouldn't be surprised to see ZOE become the "Holy Trinity" of the cylon race.

What we've learned from CAPRICA so far

    by spyguy

    1. A digital copy of a dead girl named Zoe has been accidentally uploaded into a prototype Cylon Centurion body. And she seems generally okay with the idea, even though probably 99% of people would freak the hell out if it happened to them.

    2. Zoe's parents are clueless idiots, especially her mom, who brilliantly announces to everyone that her daughter belonged to a fringe religious group that blew up a monorail full of people. Zoe's Dad, meanwhile, can't figure what happened to Digital Zoe and becomes even more puzzled while looking directly at the prototype Cylon.

    3. Zoe's best friend Lacy belongs to the fringe group, which seems to be partially based at her school. The Headmistress there wants Lacy to join the TV series BIG LOVE.

    4. When William Adama from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was a kid, he used to run around with his Uncle Sam and had an interest in joining the Tauron mafia. William's father Joseph is also an idiot that will give his son his lighter at some point.

    5. The writers are very probably making this series up as they go along, just as they did for BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

    by smokingrobot

The pitch had two parts, 1) 'Hey - don't they look alive, aren't the a person', and 2) 'They can be our slaves'. Kind of makes you really hate the people building these things? I see 'Crapica' is as fundamentally flawed as BSG and it didn't take four years to get there.

    Spyguy, I like your analysis.

    by johnnyangel

When the mother denounced her own daughter as a terrorist I really lost respect for the show. I suppose there are mothers who are that narcissistic that they would throw their own dead daughters under the bus like that but the mom was never portrayed that way before or since so it was totally unbelievable. The other problem I find is the show feels claustrophobic in that main characters from BSG are present in the prequel. That's the kind of incestuous nonsense you find in the Lucas prequels. Caprica is a big world. Other people probably did significant things aside from the Adamas. The enslavement thing is the first interesting concept they've come up with since the Zoe ghost in the machine thing happened. Why take so long to get to the good parts? Because the show is incredibly underwritten, poorly plotted and self-indulgent. Get with it, Moore! You're better than that!

Gotta' agree that Spyguy's sarcastic synopsis was pretty funny (and accurate). I think it's safe to say that the reason they decided to use the Adama family in the prequel was simply to hook BSG viewers. A cheap trick to be sure, as I'm not sure anyone is that invested in the Adama family history. Lucas may have had a need to use known characters, but Moore doesn't have that excuse, he could have used anybody to fill the role of grieving, victimized family.

    by cerebralassassin

Like, seriously difficult to look at. She's got a hot mom...why does she look like some young guy in a Brian May fright wig? Was she adopted? Did Hot Mom and Mask go to the Ugly Girl Adoption Agency and say, "Give us one of your ugliest models. And make sure she's a total bitch too." Because that's the only rationale I can think of that they cast that beastly looking chick. She certainly can't act, so that wasn't it. Maybe she sucks a mean cock? I can't image anyone wanting that horror show on their cock unless they're a member of both the Queen Fan Club and NAMBLA.

Waiting for Greystone to discover the heartless, crazed partial-Tamara avatar, and use her as the final fix to make cylon soldiers. They could really do that well, and have it be the underlying, unspoken conflict that Adama always had in BSG (or they could screw it up and make a big stupid "twist" out of it....).It is starting slow, for sure. I'm okay with lingering and dwelling on things, as long as there is somewhere we are going that is worth the trip. If the lingering and dwelling is stalling for time while they figure it out, well, that is sad.Alessandra Torresani is many things, but she is not ugly. This as much a prequel to BSG as "Mad Men" is a prequel to, well anything set in the present. And I mean that as a good thing. Really, besides for a few far off things (the cylons rebel, the little kid grows up to be Edward James Olmos) theres very little constricting the storylines. And I'm glad they don't feel the need the need to tie every detail back to BSG. I am perfectly happy forgetting its the same universe as long as the writing continues to be decent.

it comes back with more episodes... they have talked about how this show is going to evolve, and it indicates that they are aware that some parts are working better than others... most interestingly, they plan to up the pacing and action quotient, which I would argue are the biggest problems with the show thus far... they're also going to expand on the virtual world, which should also be a plus. I would say the jury on this this show isn't in yet. Time and patience.

Really isn't bad when they start going into what it means to be human. I especially liked Zoe's hurt reaction when Daniel tells her to take off her right arm. The shows is very thoughtful at points like that Then, there are things like the ceremony. What in the hell is the brother doing with his shirt off? And did it mean when Tamara is walking down the street at the end. No sense at all to me. A good show that sometimes goes places it doesn't need to go.

I'm really loving the virtual world stuff their doing, its like a 50s MMO version of GTA where once you die you can never re-join the game. All that stuff is just really cool to watch. They could spend a season just doing crazy stuff in cyberspace and it'd be entertaining. I think the show's finally starting to pick up steam and go interesting places.

    Rewatching in HD

    by hercules

    1) These effects shots are gorgeous. That view out Greystone's boardroom window is amazing.

    2) Zoe is gorgeous an looks like she weighs about 98 pounds. What these viewers must think of Mad Men's Joan Holloway!

    3) I find the opening striking. Though I'd agree it might work better as a promo than an intro, it's so brief it's hardly worthy of all the scorn.

    4) On reflection, I suppose Lawless could play a character in the Greystones' lives to whom Zoey would eventually pay homage via the threes.

    5) Daniel's boardroom excitement over robot servants is at least slightly confounding because he's already got Surge, his rather more elegantly designed bowling-pin robot slave.

On the shows content: I like the cops assessment of this dangerous monotheistic religion. I'm glad the writers dared to go there.

Adama's uncle wasn't just a mobster, he was a gay mobster.

They have wrapped shooting Season 1 and the ratings have been somewhat disappointing for Scifi. It isn't that it is going to get 'canceled' but the decision to pick it back up doesn't need to be made tomorrow since production wouldn't really need to pick back up until this fall. The producers may have said "I don't know, maybe in the future" but I doubt any actual talks would have taken place, considering there is basically nothing to talk about.

Will everyone in the V-worlds afterlife eventually become Centur

    by stereotypical evil archer

This means that every toaster has a person-like entity inside and this is required for them to eventually rebel. What's totally cool is that the Centurions could all be inhabited by the Virtual Avatars of the dead. This enables there to be life after death in the real world but contained within a Cylon shell and forced to be a slave. Resurrection. Not the same as the Final Five's resurrection, but it's the first step to the beginning of everything repeating itself. Belief in the one god can lead to eternal life, but said eternal life consists of being a slave to those who don't believe in the one god. That's some pretty intense internal torment; rebellion is the only recourse for the Centurions. This means that the Cylons who fly off into space at the end of Battlestar Galactica actually transcend the guilt, anger and jealousy; they are truly free and they're no longer capable of repeating the same mistakes and therefore transcend out of the pattern that the settlers on earth are doomed to repeat. Eternal life requires faith in the one god, so that one's avatar can live in the Virtual Worlds until being downloaded into a Centurion; a Centurion that must survive all the wars to eventually fly into space. Free at last.So maybe this is what happens. When the Virtual Worlds are shut down, millions (billions?)of the avatars of the dead could be destroyed thus they have an exodus into Centurion bodies. The shutting down of the Virtual Worlds becomes the equivalent of destroying the underworld. That's like destroying Heaven and Hell and forcing the deceased to be our slaves. That creates such a huge tapestry for speculative social fiction. The social fiction and social commentary is what made Battlestar Galactica work and it should be the focus of Caprica. The writers and showrunners just have to find some way to haven a few space battles to keep the less interested, interested.Season 2 should continue right after Season 1, but Season 3 should jump five years and go headlong into the first Cylon War. This gives plenty of action with plenty of social fiction for fodder which should give 3 more years of dedicated viewers. Hopefully have a good 5 year plan like this, but 4 years would probably be better and tighter. This ends my musings.

    by stereotypical evil archer

an entire episode is a day in the life of a cylon centurion, and yet it is somehow emotional and powerful (with some kick ass action).
Do you think any of the writers are willing to step up to that? Probably not.

    by eyeofpolyphemus

I can see both power corrupting her and losing her mind since she cannot escape. It would be an interesting dynamic if she turned out to be the Cylon god. That would make the Adamas pivotal in both man's destruction and redemption.

    by hoichitheearless

I'm glad they finally gave Joseph a clue that Tamara is wandering around in the virtual world, and the New Cap City stuff was pretty cool, but most of the rest of the episode had me feeling pretty disinterested. They've really got to get to the meat of the story soon. I think I'll give it to the break.
On a side note, Amanda mentioned being pregnant with Zoe. It eliminates some possibilities as far as Zoe's origins... I'd thought perhaps the casting of an actress who looks nothing like she could be the daughter of Paula Malcomson and Eric Stoltz might have been deliberate. I wonder why they didn't just have Alessandra go blond... there are plenty of pictures of her with a blond due.

Ambitious, moody, creepy, sad, science fiction. Great world building, cultural insights, Greystone losing his mind, the potential implications for Tamara's character are vast, love the performances during the funeral, plus it was great seeing the proto-vipers in New Cap City. It makes me very, very, sad to see so many negative comments regarding this show on this site. I feel like we are very lucky to be experiencing science fiction of this caliber and ambition.

I don't understand how Tamara disappeared after being shot in front of the fat guy. Her boyfriend stole the avatar, but there wasn't enough time to run around and grab her and disappear. While Caprica is pretty damn good, you wouldn't see that kind of inconsistency on BSG.

    Goddammit.

    by rhuragh

I didn't do that deliberately. Anyway. I think we just saw a very pivotal episode. As Turingtestee says above, I think Tamara is now going to go on a violence binge clearing out the virtual Caprica. I'm going to take a guess and say that the metal cylons have a unified conscienceness made of a melded Zoe and Tamara. Zoe brings the blind religious fanaticism, the resentment at being used by her father, and Tamara brings the violence, and even more resentment at being ignored by her father. A very nasty marriage with devastating consequences for humanity.

Alessandra Torresani is most definitely not fat. I think they're making the conscious choice to dress her in very billowy dresses that don't hug her form. Her cheeks and facial structure also give the appearance of being a little pudgy, but, well, take a look at this and then say she's fat: http://www1.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Microsoft+Zune+Presents+Battlestar+Galactica+9Hhwoyr1C3xl.jpg

    by jazzylg

Just think, v-world is like the matrix, only you can check in and out at will. If you die v-wolrd, you still live in the real world. Tamara definitely has some neo influences. Unless they shut it down. Like someone else said, she probaly becomes a cylon, and is a prototype for the humanoid looking versions.

If 'Neil Cumpston' reviewed & spoiled this, he'd say...

    by catlettuce4

We find that Tamara (or "Tam-RAAA" as her dad calls her) is now in cyberspace and struggling to get out. So she meets a group at the V club led by an old skank and her deputy, Emo nerd boy.

Meanwhile Bill "Little Willy" Adama is still pissed off and has been wagging school in order to hang out with gay gangster uncle. Willy's dad isn't too pleased so takes him fishing. But some teenagers racially abuse Willy and he twats one of them on the head with a rock throw then runs over and beats said teen into a near coma.

Zoe is still inside a cylon and her dad takes her to work. Thus begins his 'Ed 209'-style scene where he explains the company can dispense with immoral VR sex goggles and instead get into the business of robotic slavery (nice!). Oh, and Zoecylon pulls her arm off.

Back in V world Tam-raaa finds she can take a bullet without 'de-rezzing' and thus becomes Neo. Tam-raaa-Neo and the nerd go on a mission to steal virtual cash from a fat guy and get involved in some violence and see vipers. In the end she gets double-crossed by the skank and kills her, then tells Emo nerd boy to go find her dad in the real-world...

... dad is having a late wake for dead wife. Willy looks cheery (like most kids at wakes...) and there's a knock at the door - is the real Emo boy! He tells the dad he's seen Tam-raaa, the dad gets pissed off and chases him down the street.

End scene: Tam-raaa-Neo is tottering down a deserted virtual alley clutching a machine gun while dressed in fab 40s style gear. Thumpy thumpy music plays. The audience (well, the male part) think 'Fuck me, Neo's got a GREAT ass'.

Thank you! But seriously, having just learned that Espenson "voluntarily" stepped down as showrunner halfway through the season has me worried that the show is going to lose some of the feel it's been developing in favor of more whiz-bang etc. Maybe the difference won't be that drastic at all and the show will just keep naturally progressing. I watched one of the episodes with commentary and Eick basically said that the place these characters wind up by the end of the season will be shocking when compared with where they began. Can't wait!
