The Black Pearl Arrives In Hawaii!!
Merrick here...
The Black Pearl has arrived in Hawaii after a 10mph journey from the Bahamas to Hawaii via L.A.. She's now docked at Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor in Oahu. There, the ship will be prepped for filming of the Rob Marshall directed PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES this Summer.
Here's an embed of a Hawaiian news report which shows the Pearl pulling into port. This report is interesting as it also touches on Hawaii's film industry; the state's film office has...a two person staff...now? That's what they're saying, right? Wow. Talk about overworked.

I wonder if its just a fear of being called out for being late with it or something. This IS good news for Hawaii though, since they're losing the LOST production this spring, sadly. To those who didn't care for the movies after Pirates 1, watch them in Blu Ray on a decent TV.. Quite amazing and nearly jaw dropping which makes up for the storylines that people gripe about..Yes I think they are that good.. On topic: sweet to hear this is rolling along, I am curious about Depp though because he is doing this despite the Disney CEO being forced out and he was "very shaken/disturbed" or something like that when it was announced.

The crew rocking the ship to turn it over... The huge battle at the end... Wonderful stuff. It's too bad the movie was a whole was overburdened with three subplots too many. If 45 minutes to an hour could have been shaved off, POTC3 would have been bearable.

First one is obviously the best. Second one is a jumble of action, but it's fun and has the best cliffhanger since Empire Strikes Back. I thought At World's End was epic, but I was already into the characters at that point and couldn't get enough. I suppose if you weren't into it, it would seem long and overblown. But whatever, gimme more.

Yeah Dead Man's Chest was still a little too long but it was saved by some excellent scenes and CGI. Also top acting from Bill Nighy and the double cliffhanger of Jack left to die and Barbossa back from the dead (I still think the plot should have been that Barbossa could only be back BECAUSE Jack died, and Jack could only truly come back to the land of the living with Barbossa dead once more. Still, I'm not a hack of a writer so that plot would never have been used!)

DMC had a bunch of fun action in it and was fairly enjoyable. First time seeing DMC was meh. Definitely liked it more upon second viewing of it.At World's End though, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch a second time yet though. Did not enjoy the first viewing of that one nearly as much as DMC. Might have to sit down one day and watch again to see if my feelings for it change at all.

...that they're adapting to fit in Jack Sparrow. Hopefully that will mean that the story isn't as bloated as the other two sequels. Personally, I think the POTC sequels give the Matrix sequels a run for going most up their own asses with their mythology. Add the Riddick sequel in there too. Seriously genre filmmakers... people like your stuff because it's fun. Don't bludgeon us with your would-be Tolkien aspirations.

AWE doesn't particularly improve on repeat viewing. If anything it just reinforces it's failings... The awesome Kraken dies off-screen explained via throwaway line, while Davy Jones becomes merely a limp tool with none of his previous menace (Even a previously menacing line comes out as a gag). Let's not even get started on the Godess of Crabs ;)

What a fucking no-brainer...a reunion of the original Black Pearl crew going toe-to-toe against the Flying Dutchman's baddies. A running battle of skeletons versus crustacean dudes. Duh.

Bland, badly written, acted and directed shit. Orloondo Bland and Keira Knightley are the most offensive screen couple in cinema history.

Much more action and Chow Young Fat (whatever) was awesome. PLUS no more Orlando and Kiera Knightly. Bitch fuckin irritated the shit outta me. I'm interested to see what Marshall does with this installment...but Gore Verbinski was the shit with this series. I really hope Marshall doesn't fuck it up. And Blackbeard, huh? I thought there was gonna be a deal with the fountain of youth...that's where the last one left off. Isn't there a Ponce de Leon or whatever story in there somewhere? (I prolly got the wrong name there...kinda riding the Vicodin train right now. Blech. Someone is more n' welcome to correct me on this.)

is a GWOWN UP NOW. We're impressed! Come off it. Depp has a career of risky roles, risky choices and adult fare out the wazoo. Probably moreso than any other major player in Hollywood. Even some of the more family friendly movies he's done have still been pretty fucking left of center. Guy's a damn weirdo and I would probably wanna smack him if I had to talk to him for more than a few minute... but the guy's skills and choices as an actor are beyond incredible.

May, 2011 is going to be crazy. No breathing room for any of these flicks. My early prediction goes to THOR for the win. The only 'original' movie out of the bunch. Pirates are passe. Hangover is a movie you can really only do once. And each M:I movie has sucked major ass (yet people see them for some reason...only to hate them later). My thought's that if our hammer chuckin' Goldilocks can deliver the thunder, the film can do near IRON MAN numbers. But I'll be shocked it does more.

Seriously, aside from some nice looking costumes and great fx, the plot however was an incomprehensible mess and with too many characters it was hard to know what the f*** was happening. And no, watching them on Blu Ray won't make them any better.

Wasn't half as bad as I had been lead to believe. It had way too many characters that's for sure. They certainly were trying for "darker", a nd yet upped the cutesy crap in in appropriate places. I was so glad when they go to the sand bar because it finally added some color to the film. Depp's halucinations didn't really work... they should have, and I don't know why they didn't. I think it's because it finally answers whether or not he's crazy, and I don't think we wanted to know that.
Calypso was a huge let down... WTF is up with that. They build it up like it's so important and then... . ?
It definitely needed a less dense story. -
