Capone has tickets for the Chicago AICN screening of THE CRAZIES, with a post-screening Radha Mitchell Q&A!!!

Published at:  Feb 19, 2010 9:47:22 AM CST

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here, with the fourth of four screenings for next week here in the Windy City, and this one might be the one I'm most excited about because I've actually seen this film, and it's fantastic stuff.

I've always been a big fan of George Romero's original version of THE CRAZIES, but the idea of remaking it doesn't strike me as completely without merit. It's not that there is room for improvement as much as watching that story with modern eyes, you can see where updates would be possible and welcome as long as the filmmakers don’t waste our time with unnecessary backstory or change the main plot too much. I’m here to tell you that doesn’t happen with the new version of THE CRAZIES. As the film's star Timothy Olyphant told me in an interview recently, "They just tell the fucking story," and he's absolutely right.

Olyphant's co-star in THE CRAZIES is the fantastic Australian actress Radha Mitchell, who will be our guest for a post-screening Q&A here in Chicago. Mitchell is best known for her roles in HIGH ART, PITCH BLACK, SILENT HILL, PHONE BOOTH, MAN ON FIRE, FINDING NEVERLAND, MELINDA AND MELINDA, and SURROGATES, which came out last year, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her along for this ride.

This exclusive Ain't It Cool News Chicago screening of THE CRAZIES will happen Thursday, February 25 at 7:00pm at the theater in downtown Chicago. I've got about 200 seats to give away, so here's how you get a ticket good for you and one guest: Send me an email at therealcapone@aintitcoolmail.com with the subject line "LET'S GO CRAZY!!!" In the body of the email, I need your Name, whether or not you're bringing a Guest (guests' names are not required), and the answer to the following question (read carefully): "What is your favorite non-zombie-related George Romero film and why?" Keep your responses BRIEF--limit your answers to 75 words or less (no matter how tempted you are to go over the limit). Winners will receive an email from me over the weekend.

Please keep in mind that although this is an exclusive AICN event, it is still slightly overbooked to make sure there is a full house for our guest. If you cannot arrive at this screening early, please do not enter. If there's even the slightest chance you'll have to back out of attending if you do win, don't enter. If you have a job that might make you late or unable to attend, or an ill/pregnant relative, or a temperamental significant other, or a scratchy throat, do not enter.

Good luck, everyone!

I had a friend work on this. Said Eisener sucks as director

    by d.vader

Says he really had no idea of what he was doing, nothing worked out ahead of time. Would do like 36 takes of an actor closing a door and ran over schedule every day and night. Just sayin', its what he told me.

And Capone, do they have the military side-story in this?

    by d.vader

You can tell us yea or nay, right? Nothing in the ads seems to suggest we'll get a B-story from the military side of things like we did in the original. True or not?

    D-Vader

I saw this at a screening a couple months ago. They don't present the military's POV much. There are a few sympathetic soldiers portrayed, but for the most part we follow Tim Oliphant's sheriff character. I never saw the original, but this is a genuinely scary and effective quasi-zombie movie. A little better than 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, as the film worked effectively throughout it's running time (unlike the 28 Days/ Weeks movies, which worked brilliantly in a few acts, but couldn't maintain their greatness the entire time).

    Military's POV

    by dkmode

LIGHT SPOILER: You do get a shot in the opening that show's the Military's POV from a satellite looking down on the town before the virus hits (but that's a literal POV). I thought this was one of the few misguided elements in the movie, as it basically tells the audience that the military is responsible from the get-go (instead of revealing it later in the 2nd act or something).

    DKMODE, on the original

    by d.vader

There are two stories in the original: The sheriff and his friends trying to get out of town, and the general in charge of the operation and all the problems he's having keeping things contained. And all his minions run around in hazmat suits and gas masks. That's what I mean by military POV. They have their own story in the original and aren't just "there" too.

    DKMODE ***SPOILERS****

    by ihaveseeneveryepisodeofprisonbreak

I saw a screening too, and there was a lot of military in it. ***SPOILERS**** The whole film is caused by a military fuck up. The whole second act is the military in the quarentine camps. And lets not forget the scene with Agent Aaron Pierce from 24.
