A New And Cool Red Band Trailer For KICK-ASS!!

Merrick here...
As much as I truly loved this film, I must admit that I'm not sure how much more promotional material I can handle for it - so many trailer and clips and posters. Nonetheless, here's a new (and rather nice) Red Band trailer for KICK-ASS.
An embiggened version of the same is available HERE. I'm quite eager to hear the final score/soundtrack for this. The temp music heard at BNAT was amazing. If they stay the course & head in the directions suggested by that temp track - there could be a great score waiting for us. We'll see... KICK-ASS hits theaters April 16.

But that says more about you. I didn't write the movie. This is something anyone who writes a movie like this has to think about...and for all of you inspired by this movie...and wanting to write a film about a 12 year old girl protagonist taking on evil villains...this is something you have to consider... <p> First, having a 12 year old girl be some kick-ass superhero is implausible enough...but then when you put a little girl in the middle of a crime world full of villains without any lick of conscience...you have to imagine how those characters would react to having a 12 year old girl murder their companions. How would they respond? If you want them to be cartoonish buffoons...that's fine and good...but then your movie will resemble something along the lines of 3 Ninjas Kick Back.

This is precisely what sucks about movies like this

    by Wordage

It's a kid in a gritty adult world...and if you try to talk realistically about what would normally happen to a kid, a 12 year old girl, in a criminal adult world...suddenly, you're a pedophile, and you're told to "kindly fuck off". <p> I'm asking legitimate questions about the scenario of the film. Kids and action films don't mix (see The Last Action Hero), because the filmmakers must put on kid gloves with dealing with them. Sure, this is R rated...but it's at the cost of the baddies. It's Home Alone with potty language and carnage.

    by thot

I'm wondering if they may have overplayed their hand. Putting words like that in the mouth of a little kid like Hit Girl is warped. They should have shot for a PG-13 rating instead. Great idea but could be undone by the hard 'R' material.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 11:44 a.m. CST

    Too many trailers!

    by CornNut007

I have complete confidence already that Kick-Ass is going to be one of the better R rated comic adaptations. I don't need to see any more footage until I am sitting in the theater about to watch the full thing. We get it. It looks cool. At this point you can just sit back and wait for your paychecks to come rolling in. AS FOR WORDAGE... whether you meant to inflame a talkback with pedobear intrigue or not, you have to AT LEAST admit that the phrasing of your original post was skewed toward lewdness, at the very least. "...if these men were to capture her, unmask her and take her weapons" "...punishing her in the cruelest manner possible"? I mean, come on. Your asking this question to a room 90% full of guys and I am pretty sure that we all think that the "cruelest manner" of punishment would be the rape of a child. So don't get all up in arms when people take offense with your original post.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 11:51 a.m. CST

    Cornut007...firstly...thanks for being civil

    by Wordage

"I am pretty sure that we all think that the "cruelest manner" of punishment would be the rape of a child." <p> But then, isn't the real crime putting a 12 year old in that type of gritty scenario in the first place? That's the thing...you've taken a child...and put her in the world of criminals and villains. Now, either they respond realistically as criminals or they don't...so instead of people directing their ire at me saying things like "they buy her a PONY"...isn't that precisely what's wrong with this scenario to begin with?

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 12:02 p.m. CST

    @Wordage

    by CornNut007

I have never read the comic "Kick-Ass" but maybe the moral implication of putting a young child into this type of scenario will be addressed somehow in the film. But I get the feeling that this story isn't about realism and is, instead, more about deconstructing the typical superhero journey in an over the top, hyper-real, manor. But the idea of putting a young girl into a scenario of nasty men isn't new and other films have handled that material in more realistic fashion. See the character of Mathilda in Luc Besson's "Leon" (The Professional). Though, she was more of a thorn in the side of the bad guys rather then a real threat.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 12:14 p.m. CST

Well technically, BSB, my gf IS my Autumn

    by D.Vader

But it brought back too many painful memories of my Summer. Who actually grew up with my Autumn.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 12:17 p.m. CST

    Cornut007

    by Wordage

Yeah, I never read the comic, or comics in general...which is why I wonder if this will have appeal to the general movie going public. Perhaps those things will be addressed...but with regards to Mathilda, yes, she was in that world...(and I have only seen the first half of that film)...but even that film had a very creepy vibe regarding the relationship between the girl and Leon...and I'm not sure what became of her in the end... <p> But there was never a sensationalist following of geeks that triumphed Mathilda as being awesome and badass and something to behold. I got more of a realistic vibe whereby even the general viewer was a bit uncomfortable and taken aback by their unusual relationship and her place in that world. That's what's kind of disconcerting about all this hype for THIS film...as I try to discern why it's supposed to be good....there are films that appeal to movie buffs...and there are films which appeal to geeks...and the two aren't always the same.

Is your Autumn still friends with Summer? I hope not. <P> But yeah ... that's what I love about Summer. Brought back some exquisitely painful memories. I don't think one's life is fulfilled unless they've been kicked in the gut by love and gone through a severe bout of depression. That's what makes you appreciate life even more.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 12:29 p.m. CST

Yes, BSB. Matter of fact we're all still friends

    by D.Vader

Though my Summer and I aren't as close as we once were, obviously. And she didn't get married. But I actually had a dream about her last night, strangely enough. And in my dream she betrayed me again. And with the same guy too.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 12:30 p.m. CST

    @Wordage

    by CornNut007

Well I'll tell you, Mathilda was definitely in the process of becoming a bad ass. She wanted Leon to teach her how to become an assassin and he does teach her some skills and how to use a sniper rifle. There had been even rumor of a sequel following a grown Mathilda taking over Leon’s profession. And yes, while there was a creepy vibe between the two (Mathilda and Leon), it was realistic. Mathilda was in love with Leon; this man who saved her from certain death. She was growing up fast and she definitely made advances on Leon, but rest assured he never lowered his morals. But I digress...

    by D.Vader

Bc she's with another guy now. And for once, he's a nice guy. Like me. So I could totally see them getting married. And I think, at the end of my dream, the bad guy switched with the new guy and I found out they were getting married. <p> And I woke up thinking "Shit! I gotta beat her to the punch!" by TheGhostWhoLurks

It looks like the sequel to Mystery Men, except more of a geek fantasy where the idiots trying to be superheroes are actually ABLE to kick the @$$es of harden criminals. And, of course, hot girls will want to screw the hell out of them "if they got the chance."<p>So far, these trailers have made me NOT want to see this film. However, it only looks slightly more ridiculous than its source material, where a 10-year old girl trained by a comic geek can murder dozens of armed mobsters single-handedly and a 16-year-old nerd can get the HELL beaten out of him by numerous 200-lb thugs, have his testicles tortured with electricity and yet, still be able to beat up an uninjured wannabe teenage mobster armed with a .45 magnum.<p>Pure GAR-BAGE.

How about watching the movie first? Y'know, for context? Who thinks this is as realistic as Leon? Who? Line up so I can laugh at you. Those of you so het up over kids in R-rated flicks need to band together and build a time machine to protest The Omen, The Exorcist, etc, etc... Scratch that, how about boycotting them now? See how far you get. Yo wordage (and all those questioning this flicks "realism"), you'd have a point if it weren't for one simple flaw in your logic. It. Is. A. Movie. A Superhero movie. You got your "realistic" Superhero movie in TDK. One of the finest movies of all time. Watch that again and let the rest of us enjoy Kick-Ass for what it is, not what you think it is.

Snakes On A Plane Geek Hype-arama

    by Grinning White Skull

I can NOT see this highly fan-specific film has much appeal beyond the geek world in the same way that SNAKES ON A PLANE did. Even the comic book KICK ASS has never sold in any big way among the comic book geek audience. <br> As a fan of comics, action films, genre, real life, etc., the film looks like a mess for how it sets up its rules and then breaks them at every chance. The kid Kick Ass gets his ass handed to him time and time again until his nerves have been fried enough he can't feel much pain AND he learns enough how to fight in the process and be effective. Okay, sounds like a good concept for creating a modern superhero type of film rooted in reality. Then you have a ten year old girl fighting like Arnold as Conan, hacking guys to pieces with sword blades, leaping, punching and jumping like Bruce Lee and swearing like a character out of Sin City. It is just plain STUPID and negates all the effort at creating a "real" masked hero. A lot of geeks will go see this in the beginning but I don't see it catching on in any major way especially with all the over-baked fandom hype starting to stink like guests who stay too long.

C'mon. The guy mentioned today's headlining news article to deride me, yet I am the one getting political? And are you really claiming that 'wingnut' is a term used to describe fringe elements of either side? You people have been here long enough to know better.<P>BringingDactylyBrach was as transparent as Wordage was in his initial post.

KICK-ASS feels like it's been opening next week for months now!

    by GimpInMyPants

    Wordage--I understand your point, but...

    by BlueDjinn1

...while I have absolutely zero personal knowledge or insight into how organized crime works, my guess is that they really do have their own warped moral code which would make it OK to, say, crush a man's head in a vise (ala "Casino") but *not* to rape a 12-year old girl. *Kill* her, yes, but not rape her. Then again, what the hell do I know?

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 8:58 p.m. CST

It should be called "Aint it Cool, the movie"

    by SlimButNotreally

I think they made this lame movie for aicn fans only. seriously, all you nerds dream of being super heroes...so you'll love this awful one-liner filled absurd piece of crap.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 11:37 p.m. CST

BlueDjinn1, you've already failed the litmus test...

    by Immortal_Fish

...simply by replying.<P>By virtue of merely *entertaining* the *idea* that organized crime MAY have a code that MIGHT prohibit them from raping a little girl means that you absolutely WOULD seize ANY opportunity before you to do the same under ANY circumstance EVER. In fact, just by reading these words in front of your eyes at this very moment means that Chris Hansen will be breathing down your neck the moment you spin around in your chair. You would be fucking retarded to think otherwise and should be subjected to a death panel. Providing, of course, you are light skinned and don't speak with a negro dialect (unless you want to).<P>Welcome to AICN.

Um, how about...no? As a consumer...I've watched the trailer, and am not interested in this movie...and have given my reasons why...despite the marketing reels (aka trailers) that are released every few weeks. <p> P.S. - Immortal Fish is a moron.

    by Wordage

Your belief that criminals have an ethical moral code that would prevent them from touching a 12 year old girl in a sexual manner after she just murdered their friends and henchmen is pretty naive. Antisocial behavior consistent with criminals is associated with a lack of boundaries and ethics...how else do you explain all the rape in prisons? Even in a movie as ridiculous as Commando, they had the henchmen say "Have a few drinks in Valverde...it'll give us all a little more time with your daughter" after kidnapping his 12 year old girl. While they didn't portray any deviant sexual acts in that film...at least the protagonist in that movie was Arnold Schwarzenegger....not a 12 year old Alyssa Milano.

  • Feb. 19, 2010, 11:53 p.m. CST

Immortal Fish, if voicing my opinion on the trailer...

Don't worry...on opening day...you will be surrounded by a theater full of geeks who will simultaneously jizz in their pants while holding hands. Also, there's a talkback for the movie Creation where you can go start beating the anti-evolution pro-creationist drum.

    by Wordage

I posed the question as to what would happen to a 12 year old girl in that criminal world....the response I got was someone saying "Wordage, have a seat" and posted a link to a picture of Chris Hansen...essentially calling me a pedophile. My response, in not so many words, is that accusation says more about them than it does about me. <p> You have shit for brain, Immortal Fish....goodnight.

But, still, ruin it you do attempt. So why play? Just because I say the sky is blue makes me a 'moron'? Okay. I'm a moron. You're still trying to steer this TB in a ridiculous direction. This will certainly not be the last movie to characterize a female younger than her years. So your objective here is...?<P>Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to debate the topic. Uhm... fuck you too?

Clearly, They're Having A Hard Time Marketing This

    by LaserPants

The preponderance of re-worked trailers seems to mean that it's not catching on. Perhaps because it looks SO dumb? I thought this trailer looked the least dumb, but it still looks dumb, and ugly, and overdone. It isn't "edgy" if it tries to hard; it's gotta come from a sincerely subversive place to register, not just go for "'little girl uses foul language and kills people!" That's just boring and obvious.

  • Feb. 20, 2010, 12:15 a.m. CST

And awfully convenient.

    To be fair, Immortal fish....

    by Wordage

...I don't think slowmo360 is a pedophile. But to be more specific, I think he's redirecting the reality of the situation the 12 year old girl in KickAss is placed in...and directing it at me for simply posing the question. It's the uncomfortable truth regarding putting children in violent adult situations. Putting the 12 year old girl in such scenarios is no more cool than having a couple of (turd) burglars invading Macauley Culkin's back door in Home Alone.

    Change of heart, Wordage?

    by Immortal_Fish

Welcome to the debate. I've been waiting for you.<P>If you don't think that slowmo360 is a pedophile, then why write:<P>"your immediate thoughts turned to pedophilia. But that says more about you"<P>And you claim not to be a troll. The internet is forever, you know. As Barack Hussein Obama (mmm, mmm, mmm) would say, this is a teachable moment.<P>The simple fact behind your point is crystal clear. Yes, we all know what would really happen to a 12 year old girl under such a situation. If nothing else, do we not remember GI Jane? That aside, I personally know a few girls that have been abused under that age. Way under that age. That's reality. And reality sucks big time. You're right. It does.<P>I get what you're going for. But this is the movies. And this movie demands that you suspend disbelief before engaging. So why don't you?<P>Unless you don't want to. Then that's perfectly okay. I think there may be a few other links for you to click on here in that event.

  • Feb. 20, 2010, 1:06 a.m. CST

"do we not remember GI Jane?"

    by Wordage

Of course not...because I've never seen that movie as part of my boycott against movies that suck. Okay, Immortal Fish, my last post before bed... <p> Regarding slowmo360...he brought pedophilia into the conversation...not me...so why do you keep directing it at me? I simply asked what would happen if a girl would actually put in the world she is put in? And that is where the mind naturally goes because that is the reality of the world we live in. <p> Suspension of disbelief can only go so far. We all analyze the films we watch, and if they get too ridiculous, it becomes an impossible task...like a motorcycle flying through the air at a helicopter. Or people running away from a killer wind. If the response to this is "well it's not supposed to be real"...does that mean it's supposed to be stupid, too? <p> One other thing...I think this movie is only meant to appeal to white people, geeks specifically as someone already mentioned the geek fantasy, and you may already know this with your mention of "negro dialect". I live in Brooklyn and am not white, and find nothing cool or awesome about spoiled suburban white kids who are supposedly badass superheroes...especially a 12 year old girl. I find it lame. Perhaps it's a cultural thing. I'm not going to convince certain white geeks that this isn't the coolest thing since sliced white bread...and you aren't going to convince me it is...so perhaps we should leave it at that.

KickAss = Watchmen... in total domestic gross

    by RandySavage

And because Kick-Ass was made for 1/10th the cost of Watchmen and had little public expectations attached, it will be a big success for Lionsgate. <P> I predict a stronger than expected opening of around $18-22m, then great word of mouth and <25%/week drop off for the next 6-8 weeks. <P> It could possibly even follow the same pattern as "The Matrix."

  • Feb. 20, 2010, 4:21 a.m. CST

Before anyone calls me out for being stupid...

    by RandySavage

I'll call myself out. <P> Because Vaughn raised the budget himself I thought it was around $15m. Turns out it was actually $50m, with Lionsgate putting millions more (25?) into marketing. <P> So I was wrong. It was a fairly expensive picture to make. <P> I still think it will do well. Most of those who have seen it have raved about it and it seems ideally suited to today's cinema-going demo. <P> Possibly a Matrix-like run: not much public pre-awareness and then chugging along on word-of-mouth.

How does my asking a question as to what people think an evil henchmen would do to a 12 yr old assassin imply that I brought pedophilia into the conversation? <p> "If a 12 year old girl started killing henchmen...of some large evil crime syndicate...and if these men were to capture her, unmask her and take her weapons....and they wanted to punish her and make her pay for all their men she killed by punishing her in the cruelest manner possible....what do you suppose they would do?" <p> It's a legitimate question if one wants to discuss the realism of a film. Oh, right, I forgot, it's a movie...therefore we should never ever mention the plausibility of movie scenes, right? But that's what's messed up about the scenario of the film....it's already messed up by putting a 12 yr old girl in adult situations...and now if anyone dare's ask what would normally happen in such situations...people get their panties in a bunch and accuse THAT person of being a pedophile. Do you perhaps see the problem with this with regards to the normal movie going public who like to discuss films and aren't a bunch of angry comic book nerds who like to jizz in their pants? <p> Look, Immortal Fish, I won't ruin your KickAss TB anymore...if you like...I'll leave now and you and frank cotton can jerk each other off, tee hee.

I remember when Grindhouse was released....

    by Wordage

...geeks went nuts for that movie, and early geek screenings were overwhelmingly positive. Then, a circular form of logic started to surround the movie such that if anyone tried to discuss the flaws of the film, their arguments were deemed moot by these circular rules. <p> First, if anyone dared argue that the premise, story, or acting were flawed in any manner...they were told "it's a grindhouse movie!" by snooty geeks who looked down their nose at them. It was the whole "movies-so-bad-that-they're-good" arguments...or claiming that they're just supposed to be ridiculous fun...so if anyone tried to discuss it, they were told they just didn't get it. "It's a grindhouse movie...duh". <p> When the smoke cleared, and the hype died...even geeks admit that Grindhouse sucked. These trailers and this hype gives me dejavu. If anyone discusses the ridiculous premise, they are told it is supposed to be ridiculous, while at the same time trying to appear like a realistic take on the superhero genre. The film supposedly can't be judged like other superhero movies either since it's supposed to be a satire or some other such take on superhero films...so any criticism lodged at what has been seen so far is directed towards these circular arguments. It's dejavu all over again....

    and wordage

if all you are after is realism in films and you only want to see things that could actually happen then I would like to point out to you that about 95% of all films made are filled with entirely fantastical shit that couldn't possibly happen in real life.

yikes yet again this movie elevates us...

    by MurderMostFowl

Elevates us to new levels of suck.<BR><BR> What the hell were people thinking, casting such a young girl for "Hit Girl". an aside for the comic fans... why the stupid names? I mean Maybe that's the comic's shtick or whatever, but seriously... doesn't the premise that some kids are dressing up like "real" superheros pretty much dictate they would take a "super hero" name.. I mean what's the point of the purple flowing outfit with mask and the utility belt, if you're not going to buy into the mythology and go for the gold and name yourself something cool to go with it.<BR><BR> This is so tiresome and boring. I don't even know what the fucking demographic is supposed to be for this movie... Teens who wish they could hang out with 8th graders I guess. <BR><BR> That defendor Movie looks slllllightly better, in that at least it's acknowledging the absurdity of it all. I wish it could have tried to do it without channeling "The Tick" so much.
