    How is Caprica performing?

    by cc0n99

I know it's only a SciFi channel show, but is it exceeding, around, or far below BSG's ratings? Is it in any danger of not being picked up for another season?

Caprica is doing worse than BSG, but

    by hercules

    1) Syfy has ordered a 20-hour first season, so it'll be around at least through fall

    2) If it sells enough NBC Universal DVDs and Blu-rays, the parent company could renew it anyways. (It's the new economic model that's keeping loss leaders like "Gossip Girl" and "90210" going over at The CW.)

    episode 1.5?

    by amy chasing

IMDB says it's 1.3 (making the pilot 1.0 I guess), Episodeworld says 1.4 ... I get that the pilot was 2 episodes long, but I figure Caprica has been on TV 3 times so far so this time it's episode 1.4

Only if the pilot is counted as both 1.1 & 1.2 can this ep be 1.5, and surely a pilot is considered an episode all of its own. Fair enough there's no set rules about this sort of thing but wouldn't it be nice if there were.

    by darthscotland

I watched the pilot and was thoughroughly underwhelmed, bored in fact, all a bit pretentious and the kids were incredibly annoying. but having enjoed the producers/directors previous work I might be willing to give it another go, has the series improved, at all? Whats the general theme of the show? Do the kids still badly need acting lessons? Do they have licence to change the history, as in BSG characters were misinformed or misled about the past? Is milo rambaldi in it? Did god do it? Do angels turn up in spaceships then disappear?

    Prequels

    by photothatdodo

Unfortunately, Caprica suffers from the same problem that a lot of prequels suffer from. Much like Smallville, we know what happens in Caprica's future and the writers are constrained by that. And that bleeds some of the tension. No matter what happens, there will be a cylon war. No matter what happens Joseph Adama will become a famous civil rights attorney. No matter what happens William Adama will join the colonial fleet.

So, the writers just have to decide how quickly these things happen. And, in the case of Smallville, the answer was always, not quickly enough. It took nine seasons for a seemingly 16 or 17 year old Clark to become a Clark in his early 20s and he's still not Superman. And I imagine that a year from now or two years from now, we'll all be complaining because there will be plenty of intrigue about the one god, but nothing that looks like murderous cylons starting a war.

And, once more, this doesn't matter much either. Zoe Graystone wasn't ever mentioned in BSG, only the religion of the one god and precious little on that even when we saw the cylon perspective on things. If the Soldiers of the One somehow mutate into the Cylon cause, they disappear so completely in the process as to render Caprica almost useless as a prequel. SPOILER FOR BSG...

We already know that it's the Final Five who end up really mattering in the motivation of the cylons and that the One God religion of the centurions is treated mostly as a slight curiosity, like a pet having loyalty.

(As an aside, who made decisions for the cylons before they met the final five? Where did those centurions go?)

That's mostly why I can't understand BSG: The Plan. Why make a movie about the cylon plan before the prequel, especially considering the dearth of motivation, competence and 'plan' that it revealed in the cylons? Why not let Caprica play out, then release a movie about the cylon plan that retcons in the more developed Caprica mythology? Money? Money is a poor motivator when you're about to finance a series that might not have any purpose.

To be honest, I don't see a lot of fascinating drama shaping up at Caprica. I don't really care about the Graystone's marriage, whether or not sister Clarice is a Soldier of the One or whether or not William Adama flirts with the Tauron mafia before becoming a fighter pilot.

However, Caprica could answer some cool questions. For instance, is the projection ability of the humanoid cylons a remnant of Daniel Graystone's holonet? If so, could it possibly explain the "angels" we see in BSG? Is the religion of the one god a remnant of the cylon religion on Kobol? Is that the connection between the cylons of Kobol/ original earth and the cylons of Caprica? Was the cylon quest to make humans, that we creepily saw in Razor, Zoe Graystone's continuing attempt to get a body?

If some of these questions get answered, I'll be happy. I just hope that, if they do, that they'll get answered at a reasonable pace and that we won't get 3 or 4 season of pyramid games, corporate hijinks at Graystone industries, and shakedowns by the Tauron mafia before someone realizes that Caprica isn't really about anything.

    by crow3711

Signifcantly cheaper I would think. But then again BSG had all of its sets built from day one basically and used them over and over and over again. it was the nature of the show. Caprica doesn't really have that opportunity, so who knows. I just assumed it cost a lot less to make. Much smaller cast as well has to help a bit.

I've seen a lot of series in the past count a 2 hour pilot as 1.1 and 1.2...Usually this happens because if the show airs in reruns/syndication, it often sees the 2 hour premiere aired in 2 days as 2 episodes.

I read "Hit record!!" as a music album that was a hit. As in: "And now, here to perform the latest single off their hit record..." Anyway, I just started BSG season 4.5. (I know... I'm a little late to the game.) I've seen some snippets of Caprica but haven't been grabbed by it. I don't know if I want to try to catch up with it when I finish BSG or not. Especially if it starts meandering all over the place and going off the rails the way BSG seems to have.

    Science Fiction vs Science Fantasy

    by jimbojones123

This is the major reason for the riff. BSG fans were wrapped up in the Science Fantasy of their show. This is much more Sci-fi and is not the same kind of product. It is the difference between ID4 and The Arrival. ID4 was HUGE. Fans HATED the Arrival. On the other side, The Arrival was a much stronger story without the flash and as much feel good stuff. Actually Caprica has not had a single Feel Good moment yet. I think that is part of the attraction of sci-fi and why I dig it.

CAPRICA is more of how the Colons repeat. We have no idea if there are more than just the final five. There could be more that show up in the CAPRICA time, then in BSG time. The STO and the one God is more about how those in the 12 colonies are lost as people worshipping the 12 Gods instead of the 1 God.

Much like everyone else here, I'm still a little mystified at what Espenson is trying to do with this show. Hopefully she'll surprise me. The jury is still out. And this is coming from someone who loves BSG, including Season 4, and the finale (though I do admit they made a major misstep with the miscarriage episode at the end). I'd like to echo what someone above said. The best character so far is Sasha Roiz's character Sam Adama (the gay gangster). I also dearly love Deadwood and Rome, so I'm very disappointed to see Polly Walker and Paula Malcomson in such uninspiring, though well-acted, roles. The problem isn't with their acting though. It's more likely a combination of the writers and their writing, and me not getting what they're trying to do.

    Clumsy retcon. And complete bullshit.
Witness chess computers...you have to train the vicious little fuckers out of going for the immediate kill. Any successful Cylon strategy would've eliminated self-defeating obsessives like Cavil early on, same as weaknesses like Six.

    by inactionman

going after a female demographic. I think Bonnie The Hammer was pleasantly surprised by the high female viewership that that BSG brought to the network. But they seem to be abandoning the male nerd demo completely.

I think they are laying the ground work for exploring some interesting ideas but, the "Mad Men" style slow burn pacing may not serve the needs of commerce in producing a profitable show. "Mad Men" survives based upon two factors: 1)Award winning prestige. 2)A platform for some of the most blatant product placement I have ever seen. Every episode of "Mad Men" is chock full of embedded advertising. Caprica's basic premise of being set on another planet tens of thousands of years in our past precludes something like in "Mad Mens'" season finale having Don Draper walk out of his office with a big box with "KRAFT" emblazoned on it.

Caprica needs more action beats per episode. It has yet to deliver an episode like Galactica's "33" that grabs you by the balls and refuses to let go.

They have put the Greystones in an interesting predicament. If they give away 60% of Greystone Industries net profit from virtual reality to charity they will have to make up that revenue somehow. It makes the Cylon program that much more of a priority and will probably lead to Greystone along with the rest of the Caprican Military Industrial Complex creating a phony war with the Gemenese over harboring terrorist, which is actually about selling weapons and obtaining tillium.

    by i hope you die

I wasn't expecting it to tie into BSG strongly or lead into the first cylon war or anything so maybe my expectations are lower. Actually, the BSG-related stuff (i.e., the robot with the chubby girl trapped in it) is the least interesting part of the story. I like the drama and the world building. Sam the Gay Gangster is the best character. Seeing the teacher wake up in her bed with three other people was cool. This is the subtle, socially-oriented, slow burning science fiction that I thought was extinct, where it's about creating a believable, interesting world rather than running through a different scenario you cribbed from science fiction novels every week.

I find it odd that the technology on Caprica would be so primitive for a space faring society that had colonized the galaxy long ago.

Sam was riding around in a 1964 Mercury. yet they use computers that are either pieces of paper or they look like old IBM 386s.

How could a space faring race with tech thousands of years beyond that of ours still have primitive robots that can barely move, aim and shoot?

Sorry to derail the TB, but people bitching about the finale simply don't get it and it does my nut

Before it was even released. Just the very IDEA of it was stupid. Sequels rarely live up to the original. BSG was a masterpiece. Caprica is a poor attempt at a cash-in.

Maybe they lost most of the technology of those who colonised the 12 colonies except the spaceship stuff. Maybe fleet and civilian technology are kept separate (think of the USSR who had very advanced military and industrial tech but were far behind in consumer stuff). I think the cars are more of a stylistic choice though.

Did we really need this show?

    by red43jes

Loved Galactica. When I heard they were going to do a prequel, I got excited. then AICN posted what the show could be. Ewww. Not at all interested. I have been halfheartedly watching every week, Its boring. honestly, if they wanted our attention, they shoulda delved right into the 1st Cylon war, and given us stories of the Young pilot named Willam Adama. This show is WAY too soap opera-ish. Too slow. We needed more speed. I don't mind drama, but this? Why did they even bother?

I can't believe that the people who gave us the always interesting and sometimes incredible BSG are responsible for this steaming pile. Not even Joss Whedon fell off this much from BtVS and Firefly to Dollhouse. Hell, Caprica makes Dollhouse look good.

Slow, ponderous, pretentious, directionless. And that's just the plot. I long for one character - just one - to have some personality. The closest anyone's come is the bit part teenage lab assistant, which should tell you volumes. Great cast, talented crew, garbage product.

    by le vicious fishus

CAPRICA is a damned good, entertaining and thought provoking show with a few flaws that are forgivable for a first season run. I'm really enjoying it.Nonetheless, I've got to complain about one nasty plot hole thus far: the fact that Dr. Greystone didn't back up or have multiple copies of Zoe's avatar is absurd. At the very least, there should've been dialogue which indicated that supreme fuck up. At the time (when the cylon-Zoe merge ostensibly failed, I assumed that the first copy of Zoe (in V-world) was still intact. Seriously, though--other than that (admittedly pretty major) plot-fuck-up, I'm digging just about every aspect of this show.Every move is crystal clear to me. It's taking its time, but it doesn't seem slow (or pretentious or directionless) in the least to me. I'm savoring it. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

There's a ton of hate in this tb... Le Vicious Fishus is the lone fan it seems. Me, I think there are some promising elements and others that seem to be falling flat, but it doesn't seem like it's hit the meat of the story yet and I'm willing to give RDM a chance to see where it goes. Plus, Bear McCreary is doing the score, and hopefully there's some more musical magic ala BSG.

I got the sense that the avatar was read-only or something; Graystone had to lift it whole out of V-World, rather than merely copying it.

And he lifted it in order to *use* it. Hardly an incentive for Zoe to let him wrap his fatherly arms around her metallic chassis. And who thinks he'd let her go boosting off to Geminon on some damn-fool ideological adventure...

    by donkey_lasher

Apart from that, for a first season show, this is pretty good. Better than Dollhouse was when it was a few episodes in. People who hate this are pewpew space battle fans. Going into it with an open mind, and knowing it is a different show than BSG makes it easier folks.

Then again, knowing Moore, the whole Caprica world will be computer generated and at the end of the season Zoe will wake and be greeted by Six.

I think only David Lynch would dare go there on a television show. I do wonder about the casting of redhead Eric Stolz, blond Paula Malcomson and black haired Alessandra Torresani as a family. Could be they just cast the actors who they liked the best but they could have colored hair or used wigs to make it look more like Zoe was their offspring. Perhaps there will be some twist later on with regards to Zoe's origin...

    Good point, Hoichi

    by le vicious fishus

Never really considered how little Zoe looks like her parents genetically. Her being an only child makes things even more suspicious. Perhaps she is a (Tauron?) orphan or only genetically from one of them.I really like the complex character-building that's going on--particularly with Stolz's Greystone. The easy way he lies and/or distorts reality (e.g., "he" created Zoe's avatar; Greystone's "legitmate connection" with fellow griever, Adama) leads me to believe he has more secrets (even if one of them isn't daughter molesting). Note though: if Greystone WAS molesting Zoe that would make everything suddenly crystal clear (i.e., why Zoe so radically wanted to leave her family for a "new one"; why avatar-Zoe won't reveal her cylon identity to daddy). In any case, Greystone is not the ideal father by any stretch (nor is the Mrs. an ideal mother). At the very least, the Greystones are incredibly self-involved and rather cold fish. I like it.Oh, and I don't buy the "read only" avatar theory at all. Like I stated before, if they had some rationale as to why the original Zoe-avatar copy wasn't still extant or why a backup wasn't made of the avatar, they should've made it explicit in the show's dialogue. That was just sloppy. Then again, I'm a pretty tech heavy guy, and clearly this element bothers me more than anyone I know.

    Biggest problem with Caprica.

    by parissun

The biggest problem is that each episode has been a continuation of the pilot. It's like watching a six hour pilot stretch over several weeks. The story isn't going anywhere and the characters are not developing past the pilot. Do something with the robot and move the story forward. They have to start moving the narrative. I can't believe they think they have all this time to capture an audience. They will be canceled and then the show will start to get really good.

She's keeping herself a secret because she's still part of the STO and has "work" to do. Also, yes, Daddy DID hurt her. Remember? He came and visited her avatar in that secret room in the night club, and basically stole her from that VR world where she had completely freedom to communicate with other STO members to stick her into this robot body that is poked, prodded, strapped down, and most importantly, monitored.

"I realize that it's product placement by the cigarette companies"
Let me guess... you're a conspiracy theory nut. Oh, noes!!! People are smoking cigarettes? Why would an advance people want to smoke something that helps them calm down when living on a planet that is systematically prejudiced against an entire race? After all, there could be no other possible reason for the writers to make their characters smoke besides Big Tobacco bending them over a barrel, right?
Maybe Chevy is trying to convince us to start driving 50s-style gas-guzzlers again in an attempt to turn the market away from high-cost complex gadgety cars back to the simpler-to-make ones. Why else would the writers feature them? Ah, run away!!!!

He came and visited her avatar in that secret room in the night club, and basically stole her from that VR world where she had completely freedom to communicate with other STO members to stick her into this robot body that is poked, prodded, strapped down, and most importantly, monitored."Sure, but--post train explosion--what prompted Zoe to literally be willing leave her parents—ostensibly to never see them again? Hell, she was leaving Caprica completely! What action or actions (which the audience is so far unaware of) caused so much apparent distrust/dislike towards her parents in her far beyond typical teenage rebelliousness? Yeah, she was being influenced by the STO to some degree through her boyfriend, but it’s evident that Zoe felt extraordianry distrust, ambivalence and anger towards at least daddy G. The v-world scene between daddy and Zoe-avatar (from the pilot) was telling. Maybe I’m crazy, but the moment when the avatar mentions remembering going on birth control was a red flag. Zoe-avatar took a step towards daddy G, and seemed to have a wordless, confidential/confrontational moment with him. There was more than daddy awkwardness at talking sex with his daughter’s avatar methinks. For a moment, Stolz was clearly projecting guilt and anxiety over some past wrongdoing when Zoe’s avatar brought it up. And why did Torresani’s Zoe-avatar hesitate when daddy G offered to hug her in v-world? There was some pretty hefty subtext there.

Moreover, why has daddy G been so insistent throughout the extant episodes that Zoe WASN’T disturbed? Why isn’t he willing to admit that joining a radical, religious cult is at best deranged? Answer: daddy G knows HE was the one (via molestation) who drove her to making such a choice.

One thing is certain: Zoe doesn’t trust her father. I’m actually hopeful there’s something deeper going on—whether it’s molestation or not.

The More I Think About It...

    by le vicious fishus

the more I think the writers should've had mommy G killed by Sam after all. Even though I like both character and actress, that would've been a ballsy move. Oh well...I do appreciate the openly gay, gangster bad ass and a school headmaster involved in group marriage... The key for the writers (to me): resist falling into predictable plot formulae. One of the great strengths of BSG was that no one knew where the hell the over-arching storyline was going. It kept things interesting. CAPRICA needs to be similarly unpredictable. And--yeah--agreed. They need to turn up the volume on the action a little.

some on BSG had it nailed, Penikett and Hogan particularly, but others couldn't quite pull it off. Every time Mary McDonnell said it is sounded a bit self-conscious, and I think on Caprica they struggle sometimes too. Maybe they should add another faux-swear word, for such a advanced civilisation they are very limited in their cursing vocabulary
