Published at:  Feb 16, 2010 1:25:58 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

The CW has given early renewals to five of its current series, namely “America’s Next Top Model” (its top show), “Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210” and “Supernatural.”

Not yet announced for next season: “Melrose Place,” “Smallville,” “Life Unexpected” and “One Tree Hill.”

Look! Press release!

THE CW ANNOUNCES EARLY PICKUPS FOR FIVE SERIES

Freshman Hit “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural” and “ America ’s Next Top Model” To Return Next Season

February 16, 2010 (Burbank, California) ─ The CW Network has given early pickups to five series for next season, including four signature dramas and the reality hit AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. All five shows will return in Fall 2010.

The series receiving early renewals include this season’s breakout hit THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, The CW’s most-watched show (4.6 million viewers) and the network’s number one show among adults 18-34 (2.5/8). THE VAMPIRE DIARIES premiere generated the largest audience in network history for a series debut (5.7 million total viewers). THE VAMPIRE DIARIES has improved The CW’s performance Thursday at 8:00 p.m. by 114% among women 18-34 this season. The network also renewed fan favorite SUPERNATURAL, which will enter its sixth season next year. SUPERNATURAL has one of the most loyal audiences of any show on television and does heroic work in a perennially tough time period. It has improved over last season among women and adults 18-34 (29% and 8%, respectively) this season, a remarkable accomplishment for a fifth-year show.

Also given early pickups for next season are The CW’s Monday night sensation GOSSIP GIRL, which is The CW’s number one show among its target demographic of women 18-34, and Tuesday’s trend-setting drama, 90210, which sees some of TV’s largest percent increases from DVR playback, nearly doubling its women 18-34 live-only ratings once live+7 data is included. Wednesday anchor AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL will also be back for cycles 15 and 16 with superstar Tyra Banks and new groups of aspiring models. TOP MODEL continues to rank second in the competitive Wednesday 8:00 p.m. hour among young women 18-34 (3.4/10).

“Fringe: Season One” on Blu-ray, $47.99 in December and $42.99 in January, is momentarily $24.99!!

“Farscape: The Complete Series,” $129.49 last year, is momentarily $59.99. That works out to less than $15 per season!!

    by thanos0145

The only way it doesn't is if Tom Welling has had enough. This show needs to get the rights for Bruce Wayne/Batman and Diana Prince/Wonder Woman so they can appear on the show. There is no Justice League of America without those two.Zatanna needs to be brought back as well. She can Hocus-Pocus me anytime.

Smallville needs a plan to end.

    by mapman

Going season to season is weak. The producers need to plan a final season and commit to it. Whether it ends up transitioning to 'Metropolis: The new(er) adventures of Lois and Clark' or with Clark putting on the suit - figure it out and commit. The series has picked up a bit of steam the last few years but it is still trading water and needs a plan other than getting through the season and hoping for a renewal. Go out on a high note under your own terms ala Lost.

I too am concerned whether or not Supernatural returning is a good thing. They clearly had planned on ending it this season for some time. I was getting worried when Kripke started recently to say that this would be the end of a "chapter" and not necessarily then end of the show. I worry that there isn't much more they can do after this season, but if they have a good idea of where it is going then I am all for it!

    Stick a fork in Smallville

    by anyangbluth

I mean which major Superman villian haven't they featured on Smallville? He's not even Superman yet, but he's gone through all the major baddies so far. Tom Welling has blown his superhero wad prematurely. By the time he's donned the tights and took his first flight, there's gonna be no supreme villians left to fight in that universe. And the fact that they've hinted at a Oliver/Chloe love storyline pretty much means they have no ideas left to mine from.

Absolutely awesome and totally unexpected news. Put aside Supernaturals ratings, Kripke has always floated the idea that they would only do five seasons. Now to be able to finish the epic story AND still have some bonus episodes is unbelievably cool. Now we can get those 8 episodes we lost in the writers strike back. Happy, Happy day.

Smallville has countless storylines to draw from. You're complaining how they're mining so much for the comics??? this is EXACTLY what people have been demanding out of the superman franshise forever. Season 6 of Supernatural is fine - as long as they do not alter their original 5 year plan to extend it another season. End the 5 season story and start something new.... and don't try to top Lucifer. Bigger and badder isn't always better.

honest question for HERC with no alterior motive:

    by ryanbraun14

Herc, i haven't read your opinion of the Justice Society Episode. We all know you watched it, so what were your thoughts? i have a feeling if you thought it sucked you would have at least alluded to that opinion, seeing as thats what you do all the time to what you don't like. I'm not saying that i demand you to admit you liked it--i just want your thoughts--good or bad. yeah, i may get on your case about other shows, but that's based on my perception of you not giving them a chance, but we all know you gave that smallville episode a chance, therefore you have every right in the world to tear it apart or admit it was surprisingly entertaining. Even if you hated it, i'd love to hear why. Again, you did all i would ask you to do: give a show a chance.

Smallville is currently one of the longest running primetime shows. Any season that makes it past 7 deserves to be given advanced notice of its final season so the show can be completed. Not doing this would be suicide for The CW

    by laivine

Well,Kripke has said that if you go big, what you could do is go small for a sixth season...a stripped down sort of vision. Back to hunting and urban legends. I don't know what I want or how that would work, beyond knowing I want another season. I've been watching the show since 2005 and it makes me delighted to have it around just a little more. I have faith that they can invent a post end of the world plotline that doesn't feel like a let-down.

As a HELL YES, here's a fantastic, bloody video that I posted in the Zone thread, but what the heck, if you love the show you'll watch it again: http://tinyurl.com/yd94cb7

    by amy chasing

Sure alot of plotlines are coming to a point this season, but there's plenty more stories to tell about the fallout of this season. Personally I'd love it if Lucifer won in the season finale and so season 6 started with hell on earth, but they may not have the budget for that.

Anyway there's definitely gonna be alot of fallout from this season. The story's not finished. Be a shame not to make a show about it.

    by shutupfanboy

It would be ironic if they canned Smallville after two really good episodes. Chloe is leaving after this season and they are hinting at Darksied. If they get canceled right before an all Superman season with building the JLA it would suck. Of course, we have been saying this since season 6 where they did a JLA episode and have done mostly nothing with it.

i think thats a great idea. There was a miniseries, i think called 'revelations' a while ago that was disappointing because a major part of the plot was about this savior baby being born, and the miniseries ended with the baby being raised in a middle east desert/camp community or something, but we never saw the baby raised, and we never saw anyone protecting the baby as it grew, and (obviously) we never saw or were given information about how this baby was a savior... dean and sam protecting a baby savior themselves could make for epic and thrilling stories while showing a new side of the characters as they are fathers, and not just ordinary fathers, but fathers who are raising a savior and at the same time, they were raised by a distant father who taught them how to fight and kill, but a savior baby can't be raised that way. thing is, sam and dean don't know any other way. tons of potential. i meant to just post and agree with you, but as i got going i got pumped. i may even be let down by season 6 if this story isn't used.

chloe is essentially the same character as batman's 'oracle.' oracle had a love story with nightwing, so a green arrow/chloe relationship isn't too different from nightwing/oracle, which was a great relationship story in comics.

No Apocalypse Part 2: Electric Boogaloo

    by laivine

From the Chicago Tribune, Mo Ryan wrote: I sent a note to "Supernatural" executive producer Sera Gamble when I heard about the show's renewal for a sixth season. I said I was happy to hear that the show would be returning, but I had to be a little cheeky and ask if viewers would be getting "The Apocalypse 2: The Squeakquel" next season. Here's her response:

"No, you will not be getting Apocalypse, The Squeaquel in Season 6 (that's hilarious)," Gamble wrote. "We're climaxing that story this season. We've been working on the Season 6 storyline for quite some time, and we're very excited about it. We have lots of ideas, and are grateful for the chance to keep the show going.

"Please tell the fans that the writers say thank you! We so appreciate the support."

While the show could have ended in season 8, I thought the Ori stuff produced some great episodes. There was lots of filler though, and if seasons 9 and 10 had been condensed into one it would have been a lot better. As for the X-Files... blech. thinking about it, i think it might be even more compelling if the savior was like a 16 year old with no idea how important he is... that also brings up the possibility that sam and dean don't tell him how important he is... knowing the showrunners, the kid would be introduced early in an episode that we think is more of a standalone, monster of the week episode and then half way in they drop the bombshell. i love that about the show. i may be thinking how an episode isn't going to be about the mythology and then it turns out it is, in a huge way. the perfect example of this was the supernatural novels which led to being about a prophet who the arch angels protect.

Hell, even if it's just stand alone episodes I would approve, they've gotten pretty good with those. But for the love of god, don't strech it out to 7. Make the last season a sort of epilogue. But I'll be honest, I grew attached to these characters and their lives suck so much right now, I wouldn't mind a few post apocalypse eps where they have some time to breath. When they're not under thist much pressure. They can both end the world with a sinle word. They are forced into this life with no way out. Would be interesting to see what would they do with their lives if they don't HAVE to be hunters. If they're not chosen anymore.

I don't think there were any "questions" left by X-Files. I mean, the finale spends literally half of its running time explaining the entire mythology in clear English and then... fails to wrap it up. It's not that they left fans "scratching their heads," because it was all laid clear along the way, it's that they completely failed to actually RESOLVE anything. It was "THIS IS THE ENTIRE MYTHOLOGY UP TO NOW ... AND THE WORLD WILL END IN 2012! ... AND... Uh... goodnight." *sigh*

    by ashokforgiven

The show really wasn't confusing or unresolved. The problem was that Vince Gilligan and Chris Carter EXPLAINED THE ENTIRE MYTHOLOGY in Season 5 and 6 (and quite well imho). But sadly the show was bizarrely renewed for 3 more totally unneeded years, and left fans with a whacky ending that did make sense in the most nonsensible manner. You will all die in 2012 anyways and Mulder and Scully won't ride off in the sunset, and Agent Spender didn't really die. Ummmmmm. Ok?

who thought the ending of X-Files was good? The final season had some bad eps, but Mulder and Scully realizing they're fucked no matter what they do and lying down and just holding each other was kind of elegant I thought. It gave you something to look forward to...until that last movie bombed and probably killed all chances of a final mythology film.

I recall Skinner explaining some things but I really should revisit it.Come to think of it - you're right. I remember thinking then that I didn't really like the outcome. Plus there were some things they cleared up earlier that weren't very satisfactory to me - like the whole Samantha Mulder storyline and how she became starlights or something like that. Supernatural & Smallville

    by ahdvd

Glad that Supernatural renewed, but genuinely surprised, has been great this year and as far as i knew they were winding up to a series finale this year, no ide if they will do that anymore and start next season anew with a new storyline or stretch the current storyline out another year - if they do, they better come up with some major mid-story to make things interesting or it will get stale very quickly.
Smallville, want it to come back, so hoping it does get renewed, though they need to start setting up the Superman storyline a lot more heavily, Clark NEEDS to start flying and WEARING HIS FREAKING GLASSES so he's not noticed when he eventually does become Supes! C'mon guys, you planted the seeds of it about 3 years ago and he's never worn them since!!!

You are right on most grounds, but Carter & Spotnitz finished all the mythology up to Season 7 with Sein Un zeit/Closure. It made a lot of sense as a whole as to The X-Files Mythology until it got renewed for a further two more Seasons, which by then made the extended Mythology too contrived. I thought it was well done too in S5 in explaining the Mythology and FTF. Season 6-7 felt like clearing all the answers of the Mythology, but was still well done. Until the last two seasons. V'Shael is defintely correct though The X-Files should have quit a lot earlier saves tarnishing the good quality story lines of earlier seasons.

shit talks season 2 of Millenium for being too interconnected when I thought it was easily the best season of the three. Glen Morgan and James Wong made Millenium amazing in season 2 but Chris Carter fired them and made season three which just kinda re hashed season 1.

Smallville has already been announced as returning or at least Welling. It shouldn't as I think it's going to end up staying too long at the party if you will. The show managed to survive four time slot changes and pulls in the numbers no matter where its placed, even on Friday nights.
The show has been decent for as long as its been on though.

    by smackfu

It guaruntees a toothless 5th season. If they knew this was the last one, the whole Sam vs Dean thing would have gone down with consequence. Now some shitty deus ex machina will go down and take all the weight out of it. And the problem is that the whole series is based upon the weight of that showdown.

Honestly I'm shocked it didn't occur to them yet to feature the New Gods in their human incarnations this year. Who doesn't think they'd pull off a Dark Side gangster character? Hell, that seemed tailor made for Smallivlle--it's too stupid for anything else! Also, Pam Grier as Amanda Waller? Terrible choice, should have been Lorena Gale from Battlestar Galactica.

    by master bruce

and was sorry it was going to end w/Season 5. According to the producers & stars last year, they were all growing a bit tired & wanted to go out on top, unlike many popular genre shows in the past...so what the hell - no pun intended - changed? And how do you top the whole Angels vs. Demons War?!!! The only out I can see is that the final battle between Michael & Lucifer is supposed to take place five years in the future, right? How 'bout instead of rushing to a hasty conclusion this season, strech it through next year by having the final season be a flash-forward five years leading up to the final battle between Michael/Dean & Lucifer/Sam. Who will live?, who will die? And will the world ever be the same?!!!...or something like that. Better than going out w/a wimper by going back to hunting monster-of-the-week or some other such douchbagery.

Supernatural kicks the ass out of X-files, at least when Supernatural knew it's storyline was not going to last at the end of season 2 they ended it and started another one instead of stretching it out year after year until we were left with no resolution (WTF chris Carter - you get to make another movie after a decade of stretchig the story and make 'i want to sleep' er, i mean 'believe' and leave everyone hanging?! - Dipshit!), and besides, Supernatural is WB, X-files is Fox, never going to happen.

Best way to do it would be to keep them as the same character (so the female dean is still a drunken fighting eating sex crazed person, and sam is still broody and uptight. But dont have the real dean and sam in it at all...use someone like Bobby Singer as the main character . Its the kind of amusing stand alone episode that Supernatural usually does well.

Disappointed with a S6 of Supernatural

    by maelstrom_zero

Because honestly, this entire showdown between Michael/Dean and Lucifer/Sam is an epic storyline that's spent 4.5 seasons in the making. Everything's led up to this final point, and once it's reached. . .what's next?
I can't imagine Kripke going bigger than Heaven vs. Hell unless its with Cthulu and the Elder Gods, but it would feel rushed and silly, compared to the storyline that's been marinating/developing for 5 seasons. And if they went smaller. . .well, I'm just envisioning the bad monster of the week episodes from S1.I just hope Kripke and the other writers can make a S6 of Supernatural work.

Kripke said he had an idea for a season 6 story line so I'm not worried at all, even if he isn't showrunner I'm sure they will follow whatever path he has laid out for a sixth season. And I'm sure many of the quality writers on the show will be remaining on the payroll.

SMALLVILLE gives CW decent Friday ratings

    by spyguy

I mean, is there any other show that the CW has that actually goes up in the ratings on a Friday night halfway through the season? They finally find a stable Friday night performer and now it's on the bubble? Ridiculous.

Oh, and AngYangBluth, there are still plenty of Superman villains to be featured on SMALLVILLE -- Mongul, the Atomic Skull, Conduit, the Cyborg Superman, the Eradicator, Neutron, Solomon Grundy, the Ultra-Humanite, Ultraman, etc. Hell, we haven't even seen Darkseid yet, so there's definitely enough gas in the tank for at least one more season. Besides, with the way they've been incorporating other elements of the DC Universe in recent years, they can dip into just about any rogues gallery that isn't already tied up elsewhere in movie production rights.

Think it will be the same with this, think we won't see the boys beat Satan till end of season 6. Or if they do off him at the end of the current season, maybe it will go in the same direction as Angel was supposed to go in Season Six. Apparently, after unleashing hell and WINNING, the Powers That Be were to become the Big Bad's in Season 6 to restore the balance. Perhaps when the boys defeat Satan, God himself becomes the antagonist. After all, people are asking how you can top Satan. Who else but God is up to the task?

    by abraham

One suggestion for an upcoming "Supernatural" episode and this hasn't been done before. The Winchester brothers fight a demonic rock'n'roll band whose music actually drives fans to murder and suicide. Remember the urban legend from the 1970s that KISS stood for "Knights in Satan's Service"?

    by abraham

This would occur at a Battle of the Bands. The neat twist is that the heavy metal band is the original suspect but it turns out that the sappy love song singer (think Michael Bolton, etc.) is the actual demon. The boys have to kill it by performing their own godawful music.

    Supernatural Season 5/6 Thoughts

    by thegrayghost

I read some really great ideas above on how they can finish off season 5 and do a season 6. First off, there are countless urban legends and interesting ghost stories to be told, so weekly plot-lines for season 6 and beyond shouldn't ever be a problem. The issue is the over-arcing storyline that started in season one with Sam and Dean and their apparent fated roles to be the vessel for Lucifer and Michael. I think it's true that it takes the writers about two seasons to kill off a big baddy (Yellow-eyed Demon - season 1/2 and Lilith - season 3/4), so I don't see Lucifer as being any different. The great thing about SN writing is that they do finish off major storylines every season and end with a twist, launching the following season into another fantastic direction. I don't remember all the plotlines clearly, but I believe season 1 was about finding their dad (they succeeded, but lost him again and their dad goes to hell), season 2 was about hunting the Yellow-eyed Demon (Dean succeeds in killing him with the Colt), season 3 was trying to save Dean from going to hell (they failed, but Castiel brings him back to life), season 4 was trying to prevent Lilith from breaking the 66 seals (they failed again and Lucifer is released and the Apocalyse begins), and finally, season 5 is about stopping Lucifer and saving the world from the Apocalyse. Seems like the build up is with both Sam and Dean saying yes, and like another poster above me, maybe that's the ending. And perhaps, the twist is that God finally makes himself known in some way and "stops" them ... hopefully, not in human form ... a little too Michael Landon for me. I don't think I've ever seen anyone play God well except for maybe Morgan Freeman. Perhaps season 6 can be about how they will throw Lucifer back to hell cause I really don't think he can ever be killed, and postpone the end of the world because, I'm no theologian, but I think paradise is after Revelations and that doesn't make for a very interesting show. Frankly, I have no idea how they will end it and start season 6. They always seem to have an uncanny and clever way of figuring it out. I hope they keep it up. Love this show! :)
