ScoreKeeper Reveals the Five Winners of John Williams' BLACK SUNDAY CD!!

Published at:  Feb 16, 2010 12:51:28 AM CST

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here still sulking a week after the pitiful performance of the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. I almost threw away all these copies of John Williams' BLACK SUNDAY as if to say, "Oh yeah? OH YEAH!!???? HERE'S YOUR BLACK SUNDAY!!!"

And then I came to my senses. I thought of you...the devoted Ain't It Cool reader who loves film music so much you took the time to write me in hopes of possibly getting your ears on this wonderful score. I do love film music far more than I could ever love football...and who am I to deny a loyal reader film music?

I've read through all the submissions and picked five winners of my own volition who will be receiving a copy of BLACK SUNDAY (1977) by John Williams on CD. There was no magic formula nor reliable literary trick in which to receive my vote. I merely went through each email and picked the five I enjoyed reading the most.

Thanks to all who entered. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from each of you.

Here are our winners...

Jeff Allen of Denver, Colorado

Taber Oberheu of Spring Hill, Tennessee

Mike Jenner of Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom

Mark Dooley of Columbus, Indiana

Kevan d'Albenas of Cape Coral, Florida

The good news is that although this is a limited release, it is limited to a whopping 10,000 units instead of the usual 1,000-3,000 units. What this means is that it won't be selling out tomorrow, or next week, or next year, or perhaps ever. It should be available should you want to pick it up. Don't hesitate to pick up this glorious score available for the first time ever on CD!

Sadly, Williams seems to be all-but-retired...

...except for Spielberg films. I remember back in the 90's, when we'd get at least two new Williams scores per year (one summer blockbuster, and one Oscar-bait "prestige" drama in the fall). Since 2005? One new score. ONE. :(

The fugue from JAWS- it's like a proto-fugue, very interesting to note how Williams stripped down the JAWS piece to use its bare-bones in BLACK SUNDAY.

I think Williams would do more

if more people utilized his services. Now, all of the big action films have to have Hans Zimmer/synthesized crap for scores. In any case, John Williams is God! And, he just turned 78, and he's still going!
