Hypnotic TRON Binary Countdown Clock... I think...

Published at:  Feb 15, 2010 2:53:24 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with something kinda fun and pretty odd. If you visit this link which resides over at FlynnLives.com you'll find a hypnotic display - which I believe is a countdown clock that has image substitution for a Binary Clock. Now, I'm a geek, but I really don't know my Binary as I should... so I can't say how long it is counting down. Now... We all suspect that there will be a big TRON spot on ALICE IN WONDERLAND, so it could be counting down to that... but I'm thinking it is counting down to the actual release. But I figured I'd post this for y'all to look at and figure out. So what do you think?

    by techfalcon

11am EST. The binary on the clock works like so:
    DD HH MM SS
    88 88 88 88
    44 44 44 44
    22 22 22 22
    11 11 11 11

Add up all the values that are "on" (yellow) and you'll get the numbers on the clock.

    by feynmanfan

It's a binary representation of a decimal clock. It currently (Feb 15th 3:18 CST) reads:

Which, interpreted as second count, is almost 95 days, which is how many days until...you get the picture.

How does it work? I can't see it. The last four columns at least are grouped together because they are counting down in regular binary(or up depending on which symbol represents 0/1) so they dont represent MM DD MM SS. 256*256 is not enough to represents all the seconds in a day so it can't be MM DD SS SS. I have to be over thinking it lol

    clock

    by moviemaniac

    its a simple countdown clock.
    Days: Hours: Minutes: Seconds

Now, if you keep watch of the symbols in the seconds area, a symbol change in the Tens column of the seconds part means that its a 9 in the units part. (you know like a digital clock counting down). Once you know this, its easy to match symbols to numbers.

it reads out 8 days, 18 hours and some minutes right now, which comes out to 11am EST on Feb 24.

    by fuxoft

Right now it shows 08 18 15 44 and the last one counts down each second. So that's very probably 8 days, 18 hours, 15 minutes and 44 seconds remaining until the trailer or whatever...

    by dr sauch

Assume it is DD HH MM SS. Each set of two colums is capable of displaying "59." The bottom row is 1, the next up is 2, then 4, then 8. You add up each column to get that column's value. You could have 1+4 in the left column and 8+1 in the right. You can countdown seconds to a minute and minutes to an hour. I think it works.

    Just to confuse everyone

    by azrael37

Each set of colmuns can actually display "15 15" But Dr. Sauch explains it best for the purpose of reading to find out the countdown.

For the geeks who really want to know how it works, and the principals behind it, here you go: Binary basically operates on the princiapl that a switch is either on or off, a 0 or a 1. In the case of this clock a red explosion or a yellow/orange diamond. Each marker is 2 to a certain power. Starting from the bottom, it's 2 to the 0 power, then 2 to the 1 power, then 2 to the 2 power, and lastly 2 to the 3 power. Now to get the real number that the column represents, you have to take whichever markers are "on" and add them together to get their true value.

If all the the values were on, you would be adding 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 = 15. Since this represents a clock, you will never see all the markers on you will only see a combination of them.

Basically this is the key for decoding it:

    0-0-0-0=0, x-0-0-0=1, 0-x-0-0=2, x-x-0-0=3, 0-0-x-0=4, x-0-x-0=5, 0-x-x-0=6, x-x-x-0=7, 0-0-0-x=8, x-0-0-x=9

X's = diamonds, 0's=Yellow Diamonds. Left most spot is the bottom of a column, right most spot is the top of the column.

it's not a true binary countdown, the far right group only counts down 90 seconds (01011001) which means the 2nd group from the right is unknown at the moment, will the 128 position 'x' in 'x0000000' flip or not when the third group reduces?

Daft Punk remixes old fucking songs

    by thejudger

Wendy Carlos actually composed music on paper and keys. Don't tell me shit about Daft Punk. I bought to Da Funk single that day it dropped on DVD. I used to work for blockbuster music back then, and that was like 15 fucking years ago! I like them. Don't get me wrong and I'm sure the music will sound interesting, but I fucking hate the fact that Wendy is gone and I also hate the fact that the music for the film will be comprised of remixed other shit instead of something completely new. Her music in Tron, Clockwork, and The Shining are all epic. She's a fucking goddess of the keys and it's a fucking shame she isn't involved in some small way for new music for this world.

    Daft Tron Vs Wendy

    by thejudger

    Daft Tron Song

    http://tinyurl.com/lpuurx
    (loops over and over again)
    VERSES....

Oh wait thats right Disney had all of Wendys Tron scores removed from youtube, but if by some strange chance you actually remember that music. I dare you to compare and tell me that the Flynn Arcade Lightcycle reveal is on par with what Wendy created for Tron. Bullshit!!!!!
And what are you trying to teach me by telling me that the beatles recorded SP on 4 track. Um yeah it was high end tech back then and it ment that they could adjust the volume of everyones separately recorded performance to fit better against one another. Whats you fucking point!! This is my complaint. Ice Ice Baby will always sound like Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie. Daft songs will always get relinked to the originals they were ripped from, and the magic will be lost once the curtain is pulled back. This repeating song we already got from them sounds horrid. Same damn beat over and over again. All Philip Glass like but with non of the soul. Todays Rap repeating beat scheme is killing good eletronica. Wendy let the music move around she didnt beat you over the head with the same fucking 8 chord scheme over and over again for the entire song. Anby notes that repeated in her themes for tron moved up or down in scale as the song played out.

    by feynmanfan

It's not dd:hh:mm:ss. It's what I said before, a second count. It's really not that complicated.

If you doubt my explanation, county how many seconds it takes for the far right column to cycle. 10 seconds. Now count how many seconds it takes for the second column to cycle. 100 seconds.

The top glyph is 8, followed by 4, 2, then 1. With those glyphs, you can represent the numbers 0-9.

I also think that everyone with a serious interest in this sequel should petition Disney to commission at least one track from her for this film. A theme, a prelude, an overture, anything. P.S., Fuck the DVD column, it's dead. I'm sick to death of hearing about it.

Binary is for nerds. Nerds are more drawn to academic activities rather than social ones. Geeks are drawn to escoteric amusement rather than traditional social pursuits. And while, typically, all nerds are geeks, not all geeks are nerds. Therefore, ability to decipher a binary code(an application of academic knowledge) is more likely to be within the abilities of a nerd, not a geek. Unless that geek is oddly obsesed with binary code, and ignores all other genral academic knowledge. Then you have a "binary-geek". A film geek, however, shouldn't feel ashamed for not being able to instinctively decipher that particular code. In my opinion, anyway.

I liked Wendy Carlos's soundtrack for TRON. I bought the LP when it came out. I wonder if the blu-ray TRON release will have an option for music-only? I wonder if the blu-ray will contain the OST separately? I wonder if it'll contain the full final credits music Wendy composed in addition to the music changing to Journey's "Only Solutions"? I like Suzanne Ciani's music, too. "Seven Waves" album by her is nice. She did the music for the old Xenon pinball machine. http://ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2821

    Called Walter

    by seppukudkurosawa

Check out her LP "Beauty in the Beast" for one of the weirdest, craziest LP's ever made. It was recorded entirely on non-Western scales in 1986 and sounds like nothing else you've ever heard.

All-electronic music is just as legit as anything else. It's like the crossroads between rock music (which is about repetition and mantra and trance) and modern clasical, which can stop on a dime and go wherever it wants. But I guess most of you who are reared on nothing but classic rock don't want to hear any of that.

ANYWAY, all I came here to post was that this clock thing is just unashamed viral marketing and the more we post about it the more we're getting infected!

    by seppukudkurosawa

was a bad thing... I think scores by groups and electronic musicians are often way more subtle and less "You must think zis or you vil be shot!!!" than regular scores. Take Brian Eno's Lovely Bones score as an example. And Karen O's contribution to Fantastic Mr Fox was pretty cool.

    wendy carlos / momus

    by realtaxpayer

wendy carlos sued the singer/songwriter, and big wendy carlos fan, momus, back in 1998 for $22 million for his song "walter carlos". the song was meant as a tribute, but as it referred to wendy pre sex change, and wendy needing publicity for her new album that was about to come out, she took the opportunity and financially destroyed a fellow musician with legal fees. so, fuck wendy carlos. isao tomita is better anyway.

    by seppukudkurosawa

She's actually made claims that she only pretended to be a man because the idea of female electronic musicians wasn't acceptable (hmm, except for Delia Derbyshire, Wendy?). All those pictures of her as a he were apparently just doctored publicity shots. Heh.

Momus is awesome. A total sexual pervert, but awesome nonetheless, and handy with a melody... So that suit was a bit of a joke.

... then fine. Otherwise, if the Disney execs wanted to avoid that old freakish man-woman and go with something more commercial and well known, then it's bullshit. Regardless, I've said this many times and I'll repeat. This Tron film has robbed me of a 2009 Daft Punk album (as it was supposed to be) and a possible Wendy Carlos soundtrack.

    It is binary...

    by celicynd

Just each column is its own binary number, independent of the others (meaning it's 8 sets of 4, not 4 sets of 8 numbers)
It is a clock in DD:HH:MM:SS format.
From top to bottom each columns numbers are 8-4-2-1. If its a burst, its a 0, if its a diamond its a 1. You take the number from each column and you get a DD:HH:MM:SS format.
It's easy if you watch the last two columns. Unlike what Fey said earlier, the second column does not take 100 seconds to cycle, it takes 60. The last two columns go from 00 (all red bursts) to 5-9. Thats:
    0-1-0-1 (5) | 1-0-0-1 (9) and cycles completely back to 0-0 in 60 seconds (not 100 like fey said)
I posted this on comingsoon where I first saw the article (with pictures of a package that someone got with the code in it and a giant red burst model)

During the last San Diego Comic Con, there was a "Flynn's" arcade created just to build up excitement for the sequel. It had playable arcade games and a light cycle replica from the upcoming movie. I didn't go while it was still open (I live in San Diego but didn't want to bother with downtown parking etc.) but there are images of it available online.

I still think it's bullshit that Momus had--

    by seppukudkurosawa

to pay 30k for a song mentioning Wendy's earlier name which he excised from the album on her request before it even got properly pressed. Just ridiculous. His solution was brilliant, though: he put a notice on the internet saying that he'd write a song-portrait on anyone who'd pay him a grand. He got tons of requests and his next album was a double-album featuring 30 songs about 30 people who paid 1k each. Bill paid...although he shouldn't have had to pay it in the first place.

Damn overreactionary trannies!(And I say that as someone with an ankle- half aunt/half uncle- who had the op).

    Each group counts to 60. Seconds, minutes, hours, and 60hours. So instead of 24-hour days think of 60-hour days. 7 * 60hours = 420 hours / 24hours = 17.5 day = Friday March 5 = Alice in Wonderland!!!

    My own figuring...

    by loudmouthcracker

Obviously, the columns (going from left to right) are days, hours, minutes and seconds. I think the patterns represent the same numerical values in each column, so the pattern for a 7 in the "seconds" column will also mean a 7 in the "days" column. It is, of course, easy to determine that the "all red" state is the "00"-seconds mark because the "minutes" column decrements one tick after that. So... from there you can determine which digits the red/yellow patterns represent by counting down from 60 as soon as the "seconds" column goes "all red." That method is telling me that whatever's going to happen will occur at 10am CST, Thursday, Feb. 25th.
