Did you land a seat for Polanski's GHOST WRITER this Wednesday at ALAMO SOUTH? Look & See!
Hey folks, Harry here with the latest end to a screening contest. This time for Roman Polanski's GHOST WRITER. Now - if you find yourself not on the list below, but you sent your email within 5 hours of the start of the contest... Well, somehow you made a mistake or your email client did. 1 person decided to list 3 people, so they didn't get in. There was probably about 15 folks, that got the SUBJECT LINE wrong in some minor infraction - which meant... their email didn't go to the proper folder, as I told you. This was, with the exception of my few guests, a first come, first serve contest.
The screening is at 7:30pm this Wednesday, Feb 17th at the Alamo Drafthouse South here in Austin, Tx.
I slightly overfilled the screening, to make it as full as possible with the standard dropouts that we get. So get their early to get a good seat. See you there!

I thought "they'll have to change the title". Going with "The Ghost" would confuse your average movie-goer, no matter how much you advertise this film as having nothing to do with the supernatural. And, to a lesser degree, couldn't call it "Ghost Writer" and too many would confuse it with the Nic Cage Flaming Skeleton on a Motorcycle Movie. So, "The Ghost Writer", while a rather bland title, is nonetheless a very straightforward and appropriate one.
-
Flicka, haha! Eric Vespe and his buddies get "sloppy two-hundred and twenty-fifths".
The thought of it almost makes me feel sorry for Polanski. Almost. -
"There was probably about 15 folks, that got the SUBJECT LINE wrong in some minor infraction"
Some minor infraction... like raping a child?
Don't forget to pass round that 'free Polanski' petition at the screening H. -
Go all out.
-
There's a scene where the protagonist drugs and rapes a 13 year-old girl and then flees the country to escape imprisonment. Oh, wait, that's what Polanski did!
-
So that Polanski's date can attend the screening!
-
Ghost Ride Her, starring Polanski as the ghost!
-
"Rated PG-13 for language, brief nudity/sexuality, some violence and a drug reference." Not unlike a junior-high sleepover at Polanski's!
-
His next project, iCarly: The Early Years!
-
He can't get enough of 13 year old reds from California.
-
As an escort service!
-
He takes his date to the future where "technically" she's 18
-
...he takes all his dates BACK in time to when they were thirteen......because he he deserves every one of his 226+5 ass poundings.
-
He thought "I bet she was really something when she was younger!"
-
Support a child-molester. Ah liberals. Better keep the kids 100 feet away from the Alamo.
-
I was hoping there would be empty seats.
-
I got a hankerin for a good western
-
Lets all hope the projector breaks so we can get chapter two of the Harry and Yoko Harlequin Romance.
-
You can ride for free all night. >:)And honestly, I don't care whether you're a girl or not. Just make sure you're under 15. Don't make me cut off a finger to count your rings...
-
If it weren't for people like him supporting and promoting my work, an artist like myself, on the lam for child rape, would NEVER be able to make a decent living and be able to afford to live such a lavish lifestyle throughout Europe while laughing at the impotence of "American Justice." >:DI love you, Harold. And if you were still a tweenager, I'd rape you twice, just to show you how much you really mean to me! Give your nephew my love, as well... ;)
-
... of this magnitude in San Francisco! It's not fair that Austin and Chicago get all the cool showings! Not that I won't be there in the theater first week this is out anyways, but still! Cmon Harry, make it happen! Possibly w/ Inception? Fingers crossed ***
-
That way they could support a pedophile, then drool over 12 year old, foul mouthed (and therefore mature for her age) Hit-Girl.
-
So Polanski's film is screening. This poses a dilemma for some people. It all boils down to wether or not it is possible (and desirable) to separate the artist's work from his personal life. I believe art can hold true value even though the artist is guilty of despicable actions. Knut Hamsun wrote truly amazing books, The fucker was also nazi friendly during WW2. He even mailed his Nobel prize medal to Goebbels, but that doesn't make his writing less fantastic. The same might be said for Polanski. Maybe. Just testing a comparison here. As I said, this only poses a dilemma for some people. None of them seems to be moderators in this TB.
-
...if he's gonna answer questions from a live audience at this point in his career. I mean, I understand that the 13 y/o girl he raped is grown now & says to just let it go, but COME ON, man. Who the hell wants to go and listen to a rapist/molester, no matter how talented they feel he is? Talk about eerie. Anyways...we're all just floating...
-
If Polanski wasn't a famous, talented (IMO) film maker I can't believe we would patronize him. Ask yourself, would you have anything to do with a guy who was accused of this crime? and lets not debate the "crime" issue. He's a fugitive, and if he did this to some one you knew I think you'd feel differently. We all have to make choices but it is amazing how we justify things in our minds. I really want to see this movie, the trailer looks great but like I said, choices.
-
make friends with a known child molestor, but I fail to see how that's relevant to the Polanski issue. Say I wouldn't want to hang out with Peter Jackson. Does that mean that I can't enjoy his work? Because I don't like him? Of course not. But if he is guilty of a crime, then that negates the value of his art? I do not doubt Polanski has done what he is accused of. However, I do not understand the seemingly inherent need some people have to personalize everything, and base all their choices on hypothetical grounds like "what if it was my sister or my neighbour". Take it personal if you wish. Doesn't make sense to me...
-
Of people who support pedophiles. Go fuck yourselves for supporting this, assholes.
-
that the claims made in that "documentary" were rendered bogus by that attorney who came out and admitted he lied in his interview for the film? That whole film's Pedanski apologist case was based on that man's lies.
-
That's hilarious and much appreciated. I've forwarded that list to HR here at the office. Wouldn't want any of those fucks to get hired.
-
Why wouldn't your boss hire film enthusiast?
-
He should have made kiddie porn instead. Actually, maybe he did...this twisted fuck has PLENTY more skeletons in his sordid closet, you can be sure of it.
-
Like every other talkback, but for once there's an actual reason. I just hope the film's good, what all these sicko Hollywood types do behind closed doors is their business. Once the film deserves plaudits then it'll get em...can't see controversy alone selling this one.
-
it truly amazes me how many people keep using the word "alleged" and "accused" when speaking of his crime. There are no questions to his guild, people. He plead GUILTY!
Also, his crimes do not negate his art. If a person has paid a debt for their crimes and have reformed(if that's possible) then by all means they should be appreciated for what they did art wise. Like with Michael Vick. What he did was heinous, but he paid his debt to society. And he says he's reformed(idk) And while I don't want to personally support him b/c of his criminal acts I don't have a problem w/people who do support him and believe he has changed. He paid his debt. Polanski has NOT done that. He ran away like a pussy. He is a coward of epic proportions. If he had paid his debt to society and people wanted to support him, I may not, but I would have less of a problem with that. -
sick bastard should NEVER be allowed to shoot another film again..let alone walk the earth.besides his works are way more overrated than kubrick's.to hell with this creep.
-
It's only a matter of time. That said, I'd love to see a Lifetime movie treatment of Pedanski's seduction of a 13 year old girl.
-
Otherwise you shouldn't be promoting this so heavy. Roman needs to be facing justice. Yet he bailed. He's wanted by the USA on very serious charges. Why does Hollywood turn a blind eye to this?
-
No children over 14 admitted.
-
There isn't anything remotely "pedophiliac" about Kick-Ass. If you think there is, you are the one with a problem.
-
It'll be a big seller for sure.
-
2010 is turning out to be quite the predator-friendly year for moviedom.
-
Not sure you have an answer that isn't a sarcastic comeback.
-
are the ones who are themselves pedophiles? Just saying...
-
Makes you directly responsible for it. All of the DARE officers shoot heroin between speaking engagements at elementary schools too.
-
was thinking more about all the republicans who end up being cocksuckers after denouncing homosexuals their whole careers. It is usually sexual matters that bring out the biggest degree of hypocrasy in people.
-
Gotcha. It failed. What you said basically boils down to a 1:1 correlation relating the hatred of pedophilia with the act of being a pedophile. No, "I think" or " a lot of the time" style language to cover your ass on this one. You said something stupid as fuck and got called out on it. 99% of people are against pedophiles, does that mean 99% of people want to fuck your kids?
-
Jesus the hatred and vitriol on this site are unbelievable sometimes.
Half the people who post on this site are going to end up having nerd-rage induced heart attacks. -
Just pissed off that "Kick-Ass" is getting tarred-and-feathered for some bizarre reason that no one can explain coherently. I'll leave off posting here and wait for the KA talkback I guess. No hard feelings Metroid_Fetish...damn
-
Do I drug my 13 year old date at the start of the film or near the end?
-
...all the people making the sick f*cking jokes on here about raping kids and clearly allowing themselves to think waaaaay too much about kiddie f*cking for their own good, are the same people so aghast by Ghost Writer, other Polanksi films, and most idiotically, Kick-Ass... If I were a betting man, I'd say most of you anyway, are closet pedophiles, similar to the gay, anti-gay republicans we always hear about. F*cking closet peds. You make me sick, all of you!!
-
13 year old rapes you!
-
But the acceptance and the fact that a guilty man with a shitload more money than sense is able to run about free basically throwing it in the face of anyone that may just happen to think that people who fuck children should be punished. You know, that kind of shit.
-
I'm about everything Metroid said, and said so well, about the whole damned thing. I simply do not get the adoration of a fugitive who raped a child. It's really that simple. Whether his films are good or bad (and I happen to think he's mediocre at best), who cares? The world would hardly have missed Polanski if he had dropped dead 30 years ago. It's not like he's done humanity any great favors while running from the law. He made some fucking movies. There are better directors making Youtube vids.
It's all been said. If he had faced justice like everyone SHOULD, I couldn't care less about him. If he had done his time in prison, there'd be no issue. Justice would have been served.
Now, people say the girl forgave him, and was compensated. That's not the point. He did not compensate SOCIETY for what he did, because he violated the law and ran from it. If we were to absolve him of guilt simply because he paid off the girl, well ... that means we just prostituted a 13 year old and set precedent for others to rape at will - as long as they have money to buy their freedom. Not right, in my book.
-
Hold on here. I've been talking about *KICK-ASS* *KICK-ASS* ARRRGH.
I've been pretty vocal anti-Polanski in EVERY talkback. Hate the guy. He's a fucking piece of shit. BSB you have the wrong person! Read my posts! Do NOT consider me a defender or apologist of Pedanski please. -
singed, Alamo Drafthouse South.
-
Glad we agree about Pononceski ... as for Kick Ass ... I just think the child exploitation in this movie crossed the line. You can't even say it's in the pursuit of art because it just looks like shit. A waste of a young talent, if you ask me, and I wish her parents and agent would've known better than to let her do it.
-
Well, at least the comic book version. Haven't seen the movie yet. But the comic book does not exploit the little girl character in ANY way. She's easily the strongest character with her shit the most together. If you take away the swearing and mass murder, she's actually a positive female role model. No underage sex, no drinking, fully clothed the entire time, etc. The relationship the character has with her father is batshit nuts, I'll admit, but it's not the least bit sexual. The story has nothing to do with pedophilia, either. It's simply something people are wanting to see in it by viewing brief clips of the trailer or reading comments other people here make.
-
I'm with Metroid..the comic version of Kick-Ass does not come off as exploiting the HitGirl character, although a flesh and blood young actress might not translate as comfortably as a pen and ink version of this character..we'll see. As for Polanski, removing his peronal history from the equation, I respect his movies. Unfortunately, with something like rape, I cannot look past it, and if I do watch the film it will be because I made sure the producers get none of my hard earned cash. I'm stunned at some of the defenders of this guy...art does not give you cart blanche to do anything you want and it's amazing to see some think it does..
-
Of course considering how fucking liberal Austin is I shouldnt be surprised. Hope to God you never have a child raped. Real piece of shit move supporting anything this rapist puts out. You need to add some MORAL fibre to your diet....in other parts of the great state of Texas Polanski would be hanging from a lamp post and rightfully so but hey, hes a great director so let him rape your kids...
And to the other retarded apologist fuckwads that said 'hes paid his debt to society'. What fucking planet do you live on. He hasnt paid shit. Hes lived as a free man for decades you fucking moron(s)and I guaranfuckingtee you he got away with a lot more shit in Europe but you cinema artsfarts liberal whores are more concerned about your fucking movies then the fact that this asshole drugged and raped a little girl and got away with it. Fucking myopic douche bags. -
Can you discuss film? Yes, it is entirely appropriate to discuss a Polanski film with out mentioning his rape charge/conviction/whatever. I love many of Polanski's film, and will make NO excuse for it. You'll see none of that retarded "IMHO" plastered to my statements, because if I love a film, I feel no need to apologize, or inanely set off criticisms by saying it's "just" my opinion. If you are going to negate discussion of ANY film, due to the legal/moral actions of its creator/director/etc., you're going to find yourselves in quite a dilemma. Actually, add to that music, art - hell, just about any aspect of society. This screeching has really reached an idiotic point. AICN - a site that I've visited since Year One - has lost its direction, as its fans (?) and posters have allowed themselves to become the political pawns of extremism. Adult conversation of the Polanski issue has turned into nothing more than the rants of the talking heads we see on about twenty cable stations hourly. It is possible to discuss this film, as a film, on its own artistic merits. Harry, I remember the days when we had some amazing film discussions in here - imagine that.
-
If Osama bin Laden made a great Batman movie - would you watch it? If Mugabe made a rom-com, would you take your loved one to see it? If Uwe Boll made movies - scrap that...It is not possible, in my view, to talk about a piece of art without talking about the artist who made it...just as you can't talk about Star Wars without dealing with Lucas, or review The Happening without lambasting M Night Shyamalan, or Raging Bull and Scorsese, you can't talk about this movie without discussing the director. And there is a fact we can't ignore - this man committed child rape, pleaded guilty and then ran away. There are some things we as people - good people - can never forgive. This is one of those things. And yes, we live in a world where drug dealers like 50cent can make money and be successful...society can be confused in who they praise and who they chastise...but this man should not be celebrated, and neither should his work. You pay to see this movie, you put money in the pockets of those who hired him, and you indirectly approve of the things he has done. Would you celebrate the work of a plumber (the best plumber in the world) if you knew he was a child rapist? Nope - so why do it for Polanski?
-
Have these been discontinued? :(
-
So according to Madcapper, it is okay to disregard someone's personal atrocities as long as he produces art. I assume you have some of Gacy's clown paintings in your den? What a liberal douche.
-
Oh how I long for the days when raping a child would end, not boost, ones career.
-
Let the kid raping commence!
-
or bring your own early!
-
Will this Ghost Writer movie bee better than Mark Steven Johnson's? I new Fox was looking to reboot the franchise but I didn't no that they had already picked a director much less had finished the movie!
-
Seriously, if you are all appalled and outraged over a crime Polanski committed 33 years ago, then where were your voices of distaste BEFORE he got taken into custody? When the Pianist was released, were you vocal then too? Have you not watched Chinatown since 1977? Rosemarys Baby? The man is guilty and should pay for his crimes but lets be realistic here....
-
You should all be tried for aiding a known fugitive, whether he's in custody or not.
-
Many of us did protest before he was taken into custody. Also, many people (under 30) were too young to know the Polanski history when they saw Chinatown...now they do know the seedy truth and are disgusted. You say lets be realistic - about what? People did infact protest a year ago. But because Hollywood seemingly want to protect this child rapist, it falls on deaf ears. But this is America. The Dixie chicks say something anti-Bush and they get banned. Polanski rapes a child and he is celebrated. It is wrong in so many levels. Yes, let us be realistic - send this twisted man to jail NOW! And lets not talk about his work! He does not deserve it. After all, he isn't a brain surgeon saving lives, or a front-line soldier defending innocents, or even a street garabge cleaner helping the community remain clean, he is just a director...his work will not be missed...and neither will he. I mean, Mel Gibson has got more flak for his sugartit and anti-jewish comments than Polanski the child rapist!!! Lets get real!!
-
How are the 226 or so people who won tickets to see this movie supporting Polanski? Aren't they getting to see the movie for free? Doesn't that mean there are 226+ fewer people who wanted to see the screen adaptation of Robert Harris' thriller who now won't be paying to do so?
-
Those people will leave the theater and discuss the movie with their friends, in turn providing the film with free advertisement. There is also the possibility that the feedback from the screening will in turn help them improve the movie. Once again, that would be for free. Trading 226 or so tickets for that is an excellent deal.
-
"I've seen it, it sucked, don't bother" - Free advertising isn't necessarily a good thing. The more the media talks about this movie, giving it free publicity, the more they will bring up Polanski. That in turn exposes more of the general movie-going public to his crime. This helps them make the connection between that 2-minute story they saw last year of the guy who got arrested in Geneva (or wherever it was), the reasons he was arrested, and the guy who directed this movie. The more publicity this movie gets, the more widely-known it is that Polanski directed it (I had no idea until recently, and I was looking forward to this movie because I loved the book). Every mention of this movie opens the door to a discussion about its director, and in turn, his status as a fugitive and the reasons why. Educating the average movie-goer, letting them make up their minds if they want to give money to the producers who hired this guy (because, in all cynical honesty, Polanski will continue to get hired as long as his association with a movie is seen as anything other than a bane to the box office).Interestingly, this movie opens today in NY & LA, and in "select cities" next Friday. In other words, it opens in Limited Release next week, and Very Limited Release this week. My local theatre lists it as coming March 5, which I guess would be considered "wide release". Why is that? I get they do that sort of thing at the end of the year to sneak a movie into Oscar contention, then release it widely for general consumption at a later date. Are the majority of theaters somewhat hesitant about showing a Polanski-directed movie, and want to see how it is received before they do so? Or is there another reason for the gradual release of this movie?
-
on this site is amazing. 'OMG PEDOLANSKI'-Nerdrage. Guys whacking off to schoolgirl-hentai with cumcrusts in their beards rage-typing about a Polanski because he slam-dunked some jailbait in the sixties. Get over yourself, and that whole 'but the children' bullshit.
-
Have a look at this, about pedos in congress http://tinyurl.com/yaync24
How can Ewan MacGregor work for UNICEF childrens charities and still help Polanski make a fortune. What a douche hypocrite! -
got in to one of these screenings - hypothetically, of course - would he be his own +1? Or would he just get kicked out?
-
I don't even know what language your communicating in.
But what I can adduce is, you think child rape is okay. Right. I'll be looking for your name on the next child sex offenders register. Get over ourselves you say...? Being offended by a child abuser somehow makes us a villain? What has this world come to?
