* NBC’s 10 p.m. repeat of “SVU” hit a 1.8, beating every new Wednesday episode of “The Jay Leno Show” going back to October. NBC maybe could have saved itself a mint and a lot of affiliate aggravation if they just went to non-Leno repeats at 10 p.m. last autumn. With “The Tonight Show” in repeats, Letterman last week averaged a 1.1 in 18-49, its best score since September and close to what “Leno” was pulling in primetime most nights.

* 9 p.m. competitors “American Idol” and “Modern Family” both rebounded nicely after their first clash last week.

* The collateral damage in that 9 p.m. hour fell on “Criminal Minds,” which has drifted to a below-par 3.6 (its worst score in 11 weeks), and “Cougar Town,” which bled about a third of “Modern Family’s” viewers and hit its second-worst rating in 18-49 to date.

* Conversely, ABC’s “The Middle” hit an all-time personal best and garnered the 8 p.m. hour’s best 18-49 score. This was also the first time a new episode of “The Middle” did better than a new episode of “Cougar Town.” “Modern,” “Cougar” and “Middle” all have early second-season renewals.

* “The Middle” beat “Human Target” in 18-49 at 8:30 but “Target” rebounded slightly from last week and was at least tied for first place in that demo in primetime’s first half-hour.

* CBS’ “Old Christine” – now competing with “Human Target” instead of “So You Think You Can Dance” at 8 p.m. – matched its best score of the season in 18-49. Also at that hour, fourth-place “Mercy” hit its best 18-49 score in two months.

* Comedy Central’s “Tosh.0” hit a season high in 18-49.

* MTV’s “The Real World: DC” hit a season low.

    Human Target

    by tangent

    The fun of Human Target for me is that every episode is totally different in nature. One week he trying to find a spy with an antidote in a Russian embassy while poisoned and dealing with a crazy FBI agent, in the next he's Indiana Jones-ing his way through a monastery while dealing with hijackers, this week it was protecting an assistant DA from crooked cops who are on the payroll for a mobster who is also an informant AND her father. Say what you will but every episode is crammed full of tongue in cheek action and a ton of fun with a great group of leads and an amazing supporting cast made up of fanboy favorites from BSG, Firefly, X-Files, and LOST. Full of win, IMHO.

    Just curious about ratings ...

    by dogrobber

    ... here in NC (or at least parts of NC) primetime programming is sometimes pre-emted by local or regional events, like last night when the local NBC station went to college basketball after 'Mercy'. Do the Nielson's (or whatever mechanism they use now) take something like that into account or compensate for that when creating their numbers, even though it may only affect a few thousand viewers? Thanks.

    by buffywrestling

    ::headesk::

    Where was I? Oh yeah, no like Leno. But even the people who do like Leno - and his defenders - should be able to see this was not a question of talent (which I think he has lost) or Scabiness (which he certainly has done, imo).

    This was about a cheap variety show trying to take over a part of expensive scripted television. The network accountants trying to find the next, inexpensive, big thing. It was Executive money grubbing, plain & simple. The experiment failed, once again.

    But don't worry. I'm sure the accountants will be back short-changing you for more creative, scripted television later. It's in their blood.

    check out a website called: tvbythenumers[dot]com. Not only do they have a FAQ about neilson meters but they have a cancel/renew index & other fun number stuff with talkbacks.

    That said, I don't think a black out in your area would have much of an effect on the overall numbers. Percentagely, it's just not that big of an amount to make a signifigant difference, especially when nielson is in itself just a percentage.

    I never even really liked Leno when he was a up & coming stand-up. But his Tonight Show monolouges cemented it. There is no pin-pointed wit there. He is as broad as a barn. 85% of it is retard sex jokes that wouldn't even fly at a Cocklins Convention.

    Except with Cocklins himself. He eats that Palin retard shit up with a spoon.

    I do the same thing. I didn't much care for the first couple of Cougar Town episodes - found Courtney Cox too over the top. But the supporting cast was enough there to get me to come back. Since then they've pretty much moved beyond the Cougar premise (she dumped her 20-something boyfriend), and CC seems to have toned it down.

    Hercules has a personal vendetta against COUGAR TOWN

    by margot_tenenbaum

    I hope you still hate on COUGAR TOWN after ABC posts its personally commissioned ratings numbers. Early reports show that CT is huge amongst 26 year old Albanian immigrants and is the most watched show on fishing vessels. Let's see Conan O'Brien, er I mean Criminal Minds say THAT!

    You realize, Herc, that If COUGAR TOWN was shown in daytime with even these completely false & misleading ratings it would be the most successful daytime show ever!

    I would like to see AICN stop publishing these abusive, anti-COUGAR TOWN headlines. YOUR PERSONAL BIAS IS SHOWING, HERCULES!!!

    by tangent

    Shermdawg- Another reason for AI at 9 pm is that in its regular live season, it often goes over by 5-10 minutes and Fox would rather overrun the news then a series they pay a few hundred grand a minute for.

    shadydave- knock it all you want. It doesnt make it any less fun as a series. Im not going to pretend its on caliber with something like LOST, but it is like getting a different 80s action flick every week. It doesnt tend to repeat itself, the fighting is interesting, and the pacing is fantastic. Some of us are genuinely enjoying the ride.

    skimm- I laughed WAY harder at Manny's "lets go, this chick's nuts." If only dudes in their 20s could have such clarity when it came to hot girls. Haha.

    chimpjnr, one can be both a MILF and a Cougar.

    by big jim

    MILF is simply a hot woman with a kid, otherwise known as a "Yummy Mommy"Cougar is a woman in her 40s, hot or not, who has a kid (or several), generally single, on the prowl for guys in their 20s. A much more complex archetype than the MILF.
