A New TOY STORY 3 Trailer Is Now Online!! Behold Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear In Glorious QuickTime!!

Published at:  Feb 11, 2010 10:42:19 AM CST

Merrick here...

A new trailer for TOY STORY 3 is now online over at Apple.

Easily the best material we've seen from the film so far - great gags (the gang sitting around the See&Say table is awesome, as is "Velocistar237").

SEE IT NOW!!!

Definitely looks like there might be a BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER element to this, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - nor is it inappropriate considering the thematics said to be driving this installment (growing up, moving on - or not, closure).

    by kevinwillis.net

I wouldn't expect anything less, but I'm stoked. I predict Pixar's biggest box office ever. A great looking movie that's pre-sold to millions, plus all the toys . . . they could pay for a dozen 2d hand-drawn movies for what they're going to make off this baby.

Ugh... I dunno... I still have faith in them to make a good movie, but I just don't think I need to revisit these characters. After so many great, high-concept, stand-alone films, I don't want to see Pixar fall into the sequel machine. They're better than that.

I see a Pteranodon, the Triceratops, a raptor of some sort, an Apatosaur, a Ceratosaurus skeleton, a Stegosaurus, an Ankylosaurus, A parasaurolophus, a wooden Apatosaurus on wheels, a smaller Apatosaurus, a smaller raptor-like dino... Nice. The paleontologist in me is happy.

    by clavius

And that's the Tom Cruise "Mission Impossible" gag with Woody right at the end. The thing that's made Pixar movies so timeless is their refusal to lower themselves by including silly pop-culture references. So I hope they're not starting now. The first Shrek was a fun film but on subsequent viewings, it just doesn't hold up. However the Toy Story movies will still feel as fresh and fun 20 years from now. That all being said, it still looks like it's going to be a great movie. Can't wait!

    by kevinwillis.net

To dig the gag. The "stopped by something just before he hit the ground" thing has been in movies since the dawn of time. And there's nothing about the gag that specifically references Mission Impossible. I'm wondering more about the train and the explosions and what not--what the heck is all that about?

But it's obvious that's what they're refering to. Hanging from a cable on his back, the way his arms are outstretched, and stopping mere millimeters from the ground. Look at this pic... http://tinyurl.com/yz36cvj and compare it to the shot in TS3 and try to tell me they're not referencing that scene. I'm not saying it's a big deal or anything, I just don't want Pixar to start heading down the slippery slope into pop-culture joke land.

    by yodaismyhomie

I don't know what you guys are so worried about with referencing Mission Impossible. Do you remember the opening of TS2? Tons of Star Wars references: The Vader breathing sound when Buzz was in his mask? The Lightsaber sound when he reached the holographic battery? The blaster sound from Star Wars (yes...it is an exact match). Not to mention the whole Zorg being Buzz's dad thing later on.

And, remember when Buzz jumped across that chasm onto the little discs which then fell? There was the 2010 theme right there. And of course the Jurassic Park reference in toy store when they are driving the barbie car and Rex is in the rearview mirror.

The references are hilarious and will be just fine. Don't worry.

I was wondering about the train too. If you look though, it's scaled to Woody. My guess is that this is like the opening of TS2. Maybe it's a play scene or something relatively imaginary (like the video game).

I love everything Pixar has done. I've got all the films on disc, I've got the big-ass Toy Story "Toy Chest" DVD set... Hell, I *worked on* the Toy Story 2 video game. I don't think they *have* fallen into the sequel machine yet, but I really don't want to see that happen. I would much rather have more amazing movies like Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Up than a Bug's Life 2 or Monsters Inc. 2... I'm constantly amazed how they can take an absolutely insane idea and turn it into art and I want to see more of Pixar challenging themselves like that. Making a sequel, even if it's well done, is still easier than coming up with something new and knocking it out of the park.

    Poop Joke in Wall-E

    by maomao

During the montage where he is going about his daily routine, there is clearly a poop joke (and a massive, straining one at that) when he compact the trash with great effort and the cube pops out. Even the way they frame it (they break the camera line to make it look like it comes out his back rather than his front) is used to imply he is crapping out a big load.

    by bah

First? Please! There's Potato Head dumping his parts in one of the Toy Stories; "Who ordered the poo-poo platter" from Bugs Life; the big Splat at the end of "For the Birds". Wall-E is debatable -- it's incredibly vulgar if that was a poop joke. And it gets worse if you add in the pee jokes: "I inked myself" from Nemo; "He did WHAT in his cup?!" from Cars; "Oh, don't worry, it's lemon" from Monsters Inc

Was the whole thing of having a yard sale - AFTER they'd moved. It's not like much time had passed from the first film, and really wouldn't the yard sale have happened BEFORE they moved/in the first film? Rather than packing it all up and putting it in the truck only to throw it out later?

Not getting silly about it, just having fun. I don't get bent out of shape about whether the outtakes are 'canon' for example.

Oh and as for this trailer, HOORAY! MR. RAY!

    FLOP.

    by galactic

I'm TELLING you guys, this movie is gonna be the goose egg Pixar is bound to lay. I mean, even though I hated Cars, a lot of people enjoyed it. Toy Story 3 is gonna suck.

    barbie

    by jon pertwee

i was wondering that myself randomword x2
but then when the box is closed in his room, there's no xylophone in it, so lets just hope, that andy's 'ok' and the barbie, the xylophone and the cheerleader's baton are his sisters.
what bugs me though is how come ken bends his leg when stepping from the barbie house but walks stiff legged after that like a toy who's legs can't bend....

In the DVD commentary for the first Toy Story...

    by nasty in the pasty

...the Pixar guys talk about how Bo Peep was actually part of a lamp set intended for Molly, and she and Andy shared the same room (in the first movie at least), which is probably why Andy uses her for the "damsel in distress" in his playtime scenarios. Since Molly seems to be about 12 now, it's not that difficult to imagine that Barbie belongs to her, and she got lumped in with Andy's toys when his mother donated them to the preschool.

    Galactic, what are you smoking?

    by jaka

Even if the movie sucks it will make money hand over fist. Why? Because parents will take their kids (see Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, or however the hell you spell it). Because everybody who loves Pixar movies will go (a movie about a talking sewer rat who cooks was hugely successful). Because the people who loved the first two Toy Story movies (like me) will be there without question. There is no way this movie will be a "flop". In fact, it's likely to break animation box office records.

    Grateful...

    by bubcus

I am grateful to see that Pixar held true to their intention for this sequel. As I recall, Toy Story 3 was supposed to be about Andy going to college and I had thought it'd involve his little sister taking on the toys.
When Pixar and Disney parted ways, Disney had control of the Toy Story franchise and started doing their own Toy Story 3. When the two companies reunited, they put a stop to the direct-to-video sequel and took back their baby. Now, it appears, we get the story we were meant to have for this franchise... and I am grateful.

It took me three times as long to say that in the other TS3 thread!

    Pop-Culture References

    by mr_bellamy

Did you people even see Toy Story 2? "Buzz...I AM YOUR FATHER!"

And with Woody stopping in mid-air, I actually thought of The Hudsucker Proxy and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix before I thought of M:I. And Pixar has never been ashamed to dip into low-brow humor (Remember Buzz running through the airport with the "Butte" sticker on his butt?). The beauty with Pixar is that it never pervades the film.

The other trailers seemed flat, but this one gives us a better idea of the story. Love the characterization of the bear.

    My favourite stop-before-you-hit-the-ground joke

    by white_vader

The old Bugs Bunny one where he's driving the plane and it's going to crash but stops inches above the ground because - it ran out of fuel. Zing!

Pixar pop-culture jokes and why they're above the rest

    by white_vader

I'll say this again for guys like Clavius. Pixar's pop culture references aren't generally just self-indulgent. They work on multiple levels at the same time, whether you've seen the film or cartoon in question or not, and whether you're a kid or an adult.

In Toy Story 1, even if you haven't seen Star Wars (just bear with me), Buzz's breathing is funny because of the amplified fishbowl sound and you don't even have to get the scuba-diving thing OR the Darth Vader reference (which IS a scuba regulator) to know he's an astronaught, and it sounds funny in that big-arse bowl, and he's oblivious to it.

Same with the Raiders stuff. Even if you haven't seen it and don't get the whole temple thing with the sphere/boulder bearing down on him and the tacks/poison darts, you get the outrageous 'danger' and over the top score. The point being, it usually works as all these things at the same time. You get the main thing, and the other stuff is a bonus, but it's never stuff that doesn't illuminate the character or move the plot. Same thing with "I am your father" and all the rest.

    POP CULTURE???

    by sachman

    Toy Story 1
When Buzz gets thrown out of the window check the boulder scene from Radars of the lost ark Shot 4 shot

    Toy Story 2
The Empire strikes back springs to mind

These films have the odd one or 2 referance but never stay overblown too dream works levels.

Hopefully should be good I`ve got a lot of faith in Pixar and now that Disney have pulled their socks off because of John Lassater taking over I expect some cool things from the mouse house over the next few years

    by stryder

Even worse than being a tester, I was a QA Lead... less hands-on, more spreadsheets. Not for TS2, though. We had such a small team, I played through that damn game myself until I could do the whole thing in 90 minutes. And WOW, you guys are defensive about the poop joke. I didn't realize it would cause such a... shitstorm. (I'm ashamed I just typed that.)

    Pop References To GREAT Movies

    by mvckalel

Yes, Pixar does pop culture references, but you need to realize which ones they do...I Am Your Father, Star Wars, TS2 Intro music, 2001, rolling ball, Raiders of the Lost Ark...I mean, they pay homage to great (or at least good) movies.

C'mon, homages to bad movies could be fun too.

    by royston lodge

Imagine a scene where a bad-guy accidentally falls in a grave and the good-guy helps him out before they resume their chase. I'd love to see someone write that into a movie some day.
