MOONLIGHT/THREE RIVERS Star Alex O'Loughlin To Play Top Island Cop Steve McGarrett In CBS’ New HAWAII FIVE-0 Pilot!!

Published at:  Feb 11, 2010 3:48:05 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Alex O'Loughlin, star of failed CBS series “Moonlight” and “Three Rivers,” will fill the shoes of Jack Lord in the network’s new pilot for a “Hawaii Five-0” remake.

“Lost” vet Daniel Dae Kim was cast earlier this week in the role of Chin Ho Kelly, originally played by Kam Fong.

The series, which like the CBS original will follow a fictional Hawaiian police agency, is overseen by writer-producers Peter Lenkov (“CSI: NY”) and Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman (co-creators of “Fringe” and writers of last year’s “Star Trek” movie).

Still uncast are the roles of detectives Dan Williams (originally played by James MacArthur) and Kono Kalakua (originally played by Gilbert “Zulu” Kauhi).

This is actually CBS’ second stab at a “Five-0” follow-up series, but the 1997 pilot from Stephen Cannell (“The Rockford Files,” “Wiseguy”) was a continuation rather than a remake, with MacArthur, Fong, Kauhi, Herman Wedemeyer, Moe Keale and Harry Endo all reprising their roles from the original series. Joining the cast were Gary Busey (“Lost Highway”) as new Five-0 chief Jimmy Xavier Berk, Russell Wong (“The Mummy III”) as FBI special agent Nick Wong and Elsie Sniffen (who used the stage name Kayla Blake when she was cast the next year on “Sports Night”) as a newer Five-O detective.

(Trivia: “Sports Night” creator Aaron Sorkin would later create a recurring “West Wing” character named Elsie Snuffin. Snuffin was played not by Blake but by “Wonder Years” icon Danica McKellar.)

(More trivia: the 1997 pilot kicked off with the attempted assassination of Hawaiian governor Dan “Danno” Williams.)

    Cancelled like Hawaii was.

I wonder if it'll do better than "Hawaii" did a few seasons back?

It's gonna be hard to sell this one. While the name "Hawaii Five-O" is part of a culture lexicon, it went off the air the year I was born. It's not gonna have a real nostalgia quality for any young viewers. While I could make Alex O'Loughlin a stinging point for its potential failure, Don Johnson had starred in many failed pilots before "Miami Vice" came around. Though, casting a Korean as a Hawaiian? They're getting very lax with this stuff. Kim is a greatly enjoyable actor, but it just hits me in an off way. Still, fact remains that all of these revival TV series from the 70s & 80s have tanked - Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, etc. And with so many procedurals on TV, will this one standout enough? Hard sell, people. Hard sell.

Alex O'Loughlin is NOT a star

    by dead snoopy

sorry...despite his sole accomplishment of being in The Shield [season6], CBS has yet to find a way to turn him into a home grown gold mine.

    Gary Busey....

    by dc films

How about saying was Busey as the main heavy in Lethal Weapon, instead of siting Lost Highway - a great movie, but as the father of protagonist 1.0, Busey hardly figured in it, and i doubt many of your readers woulda' seen it.

By far Alex O'Loughlin most impressive claim to fame (since his tv work sucks) is that he was on the rumored shortlist for Bond in Casino Royale.Thank fuck for Daniel Craig...

    Well I'll watch

Alex O was good in the little seen Aussie indie 'Oyster farmer', which was probably what got him into the Bond auditions. It was certainly a more charismatic performance than I've seen from fellow Bond auditioner Sam Worthington.

TV shows set in Hawaii have a proud history. The sun, the sand, the surf, McGarrett and Danno. I'll give it a chance.

....CBS is locking him into their studio ystem like they think they're Warner Brothers and his name is CLINT EASTWOOD. That's what I mean by 'home grown' - the business/creative affiliation.

Of the favorites I watched first run back then, Star Trek, The Wild, Wild West, The Prisoner, and Five-0...you can look at track records. We all know the travesty that was the Sonnenfield/Will Smith "Wild Wild West." Conrad saw how bad it would be and wouldn't come within a million miles of his offered cameo as President Grant in that movie. Star Trek: I'm on board with the reboot and looking forward to more. The Prisoner: read the reactions, was dubious from the start and decided to pass without watching; that was the right decision.
Five-0: I was there watching from the 1968 pilot "Cocoon" most of the way up to the "Truck" and "Lori" final season on CBS. As an original fan and viewer, I think this won't work. Too few of me, on the nostalgia bandwagon, and too few of the modern era will know or even care what this is or will be. Even if anyone has heard of Five-0 or McGarrett, the fact is it'll probably limp through one season and be another failed footnote. Bigger picture: broadcast network television series successes are rare in this era.

I agree with you with the current state of TV, it is very true in what you said. I'm sceptical if it'll work too, but will have to see. It seems like Remakes/Reboots are all the rave at the moment. Until someone comes up with an original series then we are going to see a continual trend of Remakes even that is very rare these days. It'll be nice to some original concepts on TV right now rather than remakes, reboots, clones, reimagine, etc.

was the character really Elsie Sniffen?

    by celicynd

In the 1997 failed pilot? Because that was the name Kayla Blake is usually credited as before Sports Night (and her actual name)

unfortunately iMDB doesn't have her characters name, and I'm intrigued.

    Really? O'Loughlin hate? REALLY?

    by drath

Jeez, what the fuck? He's "the Worthington of TV"? SERIOUSLY? The only thing he's been in that I checked out was Moonlight, which had some good points but I lost interest as the mythology got quickly tangled. O'Loughlin never seemed bad though, in fact I almost watched 3 Rivers for him, but what I saw did nothing for me. Did this guy say something offensive in an interview? How'd he earn so much hate? Or does a familiar name in more than one cancelled show automatically get shit from talkbackers now?

Now they are going to do another version of the same show? Hope they have marketing info saying there will be an audience for this.I can't get into "The Mentalist" because it's just "Five-0" with a con-man/magician as a consultant. Sorry, I'll take "White Collar" and "Psych."-----later----m

And I'll admit I only watched a couple of episodes of Moonlight out of curiosity (a big Angel fan, I wanted to see how Angel redux would do), and Three Rivers only on promos, but O'Loughlin seems to be, to me, another in a long line of blandly handsome actors who doesn't have that certain something (gravitas?intensity?) to carry a leading man role.

I don't despise O'Loughlin, but his last two series sucked, and his overly rabid female fanbase makes me want to stab forks in my eyes rather than support the dude.

(Oh crap, just realized this post could have worked equally well for a whedonverse post)

Nothing against O'Loughlin, but CBS is tryin' too hard to push another Simon Baker type.Mark Feurstein has a gig doing Royal Pains.
