Discovery is contemplating a special to honor the memory of Phil Harris, star of the channel’s reality series “The Deadliest Catch.”

Harris, captain of the commercial crab-fishing boat Cornelia Marie for 19 years, suffered a stroke Jan. 29 and passed away Tuesday at age 53.

Whether the special goes forward or not, Harris is expected to be a major part of the sixth season of the series, which begins airing in April.

..so to speak. Sad, but better than going overboard with one of those traps.

That's the first thing I wondered when...

    by jaka

...I read of his passing today. If they would do a special show for him or not. While it would seem reasonable considering he was as much of a "star" of the fairly popular and well known show as anyone. He also brought his health issues upon himself by smoking like a damn chimney for days at a time. Personal freedom rules all in my world, but I certainly wouldn't endorse all of my choices for public at large. It will be interesting to see how they go about it if a memorial show for him. Regardless. RIP Captain Phil. Peace and solace to his family and friends during this difficult time as well.

    Season wasn't over

    by sonic reducer

The king crab ends at end of 09, the opie season was still underway. I believe they were still filming, news reports said they were offloading when he had the stroke. So unless they don't film entire fishing seasons they have this entire sad episode recorded.

    a sad loss

    by jon pertwee

the show sadly, is beginning to get a little long in the tooth. what it needs is international intrigue, like facing off against rogue russian and japanese crab boats or even an appearance by a kraken.

Captain Phil was probably my favorite of the show's skippers...

    by mr. nice gaius

...and I was saddened to read of his passing the other day. THE DEADLIEST CATCH is a really good show and I often thought of Phil as its heart (with Sig a close second). While his lifestyle was certainly not the most healthy, the man worked extremely hard, he had a wicked sense of humor, and he was genuinely proud of his sons. So, it's truly a shame that he suffered a life ending stroke after already fighting through the embolism he suffered in the earlier season. It's frightening to think that any of the show's vessels could go down during the filming of the show. So, it's good knowing that Phil was with his family when he passed.RIP Captain.

    I read somewhere...

    by tj donkey show

...that he was going in for some type of procedure and he tells a doctor "Don't fuck it up." Which turned out to be his last words. If that's true it's rather fitting.

He was a great part of the show

    by murdermostfowl

One of the things that made that show a success is how awesome these guys are at their jobs and what great personalities they all had. You didn't have to "arrange" conflict or do a cast search for people who are living stereotypes like Survivor and every other "reality" show does. This was cold hard stuff. And from the beginning the Cornelia Marie was always like the underdog ship ... Sig was and the Northwestern were always #1 for pots, but the Cornelia Marie had character, damnit! Sad to see him go. RIP.
