Now, Let's Go See Roman Polanski's THE GHOST WRITER at the Alamo South next Wednesday!!!

Published at:  Feb 10, 2010 11:28:35 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Mr Beaks has been raving to me about THE GHOST WRITER, he compares it to Scorsese's latest, SHUTTER ISLAND - as an example of two of our great filmmakers exercising a level of vitality and youth in their work that is just exciiting and fantastic to watch.

I'm very happy that AICN & FANTASTIC FEST can bring this film early. Just look at the cast: Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, Kim Cattrall, Timothy Hutton, Eli Wallach, James Belushi and Tom Wilkinson! I can't wait to see Polanski return to the thriller/mystery genre!

The screening is next Wednesday, February 17th at 7:30pm at the Alamo South.

So - how do you get in?

This screening is for you and a guest. Like the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE screening, this will be 1st come, 1st served. Send an email to: HK at AintItCool.Com with the following exact headline:

I Wish Polanski Were Coming Too!!!

Write it exactly like that - so it goes to the right email folder. I'll update this page with the results once it is filled - and additional details...

See you next Wednesday!

That was always my favorite line from "The Blues Brothers" What? Look, I'm very talented and after all that line was from a movie released 30 years ago so there is nothing inappropiate about it and we should all move on and get over it. I admit I was previously on the fence re: Polanski, figuring he's been 'forgiven' by the girl, and has lived in exile for years, water under the bridge, blah blah blah. But then I saw that documentary that's supposed to make you feel for the guy, and it actually accomplished the opposite! I now definitely think he needs to come back to the US and face justice, whatever that might be. What a fucked up dude. One of my favourite filmmakers, no doubt, but still... dude needs help. And to pay for his crimes, also.

I've never publicly chimed in on my take on Polanski's situation. I feel that he never should have left. Faced and dealt with his situation. I hate that this shit wasn't dealt with and over before I was socially aware of what he did, so he could work as an artist on the otherside of it. I can't even imagine the works he would have made after that time in jail. He's a brilliant filmmaker and an incredibly frustrating story. My only concern now - is that he's avoided this for so long, that if and when the US gets their hands on him, that he won't be able to handle prison. And we'll lose an incredibly vital artist, whom's works I have appreciated for decades of my life. ALL because he chickenshitted out of his situation. Meanwhile, let's see what Avary comes up with on the other side of his long haul.

Headgeek, the art vs artist debate doesn't work here.

    by s0nicdeathmonkey

Polanski used his position of power as an influential aritst to gain access to a child for the purposes of sex. He did it in a manner that implies extreme forethought and planning. This was not accidental, whim behavior. This is the process of a serial rapist. I don't care if we "lose a vital artist". I don't even care about the 13-year old he gave 10 million dollars to so she would shut up. I'm more concerned with what I see as a high likelihood for many, many other victims.

He should NEVER get out of jail

    by vadakinx

He should be in jail and he should be there for life. He RAPED a 13 year old girl. He should be locked up and raped by inmates on a daily basis until he's dead. No films he makes can justify his wrongdoings and he shouldn't be allowed near a film set ever again.

I've read the argument that his films should stand apart from his actions but that's bullshit. He made his films while on the run from the law for a horrible crime. Every film is tainted and for AICN or anyone to support his films, you are effectively supporting his fugitive status and by extension his rape of that girl. You're sending a message that it's ok to rape 13 year old girls as long as you make a good movie.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Feb 11, 2010 5:11:55 AM CST

AICN is not the victims of crime support website.

    by sonicriver

Rather, it is a site that is dedicated to reviews of movies. Harry probably doesn't give a fuck about polanksi the man, or what he has done. Nor should he. As a film critic he cares about films. And as it happens, it is unlikely that Polanski will ever make another. Film lovers have a right to mourn the future films they will never see, and they also have a right to mourn the films that weren't made because Polanski didn't spend time in prison during the 70s and 80s. By expressing his view, which is not an uncommon one, Harry has not done anything wrong. He has not suggested what Polanksi did was ok. He has not endorsed his behavior. He has merely been honest.

...One recognized by all minimally rational and responsible adults. The child's degree of willingness is totally irrellevant, BECAUSE IT's A CHILD! It is on the adult to know better and act responsibly. Consent isn't a term that applies to a child in the first place (the driving concept and definition of statutory rape, by the way). So if the kid dims the lights, sets the music, and pours the wine it doesn't make that adult's actions one bit less predatory. Doesn't make that adult one bit less of a pervert.

    by happy boy

first of all he plied her full of drugs. if you had gone to college, some fat lesbian counselor would have proved to you during Frosh Orientation that legally a woman cannot consent in that state. second she was 13. under any conditions it is statutory rape. for your little kiddie brain that means it's rape under any conditions in the books (statutes) even when not mechanically rape. third you're wrong, according to court testimony she begged the little bugger to stop and he kept raping her. I laugh my ass off at all the hypocrites who spit in OJ's food and the shrill cries of how he killed his ex-wife yet when it comes to Polanski because he's well-connected in Hollywood, because he's part of a protected ethnicity (Jewish elite like Woody Allen) he gets off free in the media and in your weak minds. Not sure which is more depressing: the fact that Polanski gets off free for who he is and the "movies he could make" or the fact that OJ's biggest crime was NOT still playing in the NFL when his wife and lover were murdered. With ESPN, ABC and FOX pimping him to draw more ratings to Sunday football, maybe morons like you would be out there defending OJ as well. It'd be one thing if Polanski was out there promoting NAMBLA with speeches or had perverted sexual ideas without harming children... having even perverse views is fine and it's protected by Western laws and customs but when you're out there raping kids and running from the law there are consequences. It doesn't make him a bad filmmaker, but it does make him a terrible excuse for a human being and if the legal consequences of his OWN FREE ACTIONS prevent him from making movies then it's it's justice long delayed.

    by happy boy

That you're even framing going to prison for your crimes as some sort of voluntary "situation" that Polanski had a choice in is totally beyond any concept of social morality. Second, his major transgression wasn't "handling" the situation incorrectly (although yes trying to buy your way out of jail by paying off the victim is like something out of The Merchant of Venice), Polanski's "mistake" was drugging and raping a 13 year old girl. Cmon man, very disappointing post from you. I know you need to kiss his ass so as to not piss off his very powerful friends but a low point IMO.

This, seemingly everybody's favorite go-to legal loophole, does not apply here. There's a time limit under which formal charges must be filed. Charges were filed against Polanski decades ago...and they'll linger until he handles it or dies.

What is it with society that so many crave punishment for behaviors that while outwardly reprehensible are couched in circumstances that should be considered before we pass judgement? If this really were a case of child rape, instead of a statutory violation, as it apparently was according to those who were there, including the young woman, then I'd be all for his being royally railed in the medieval fashion he would so richly deserve. But it wasn't and going after Polanski in hopes of throwing him into a situation where the haters are hoping he'll be violently abused in some sick example of 'turn around is fair play' is even more barbaric and perpetuates the culture of brutality our prisons are supposed to address. Instead we wish these prisons to be torture chambers as if torture will somehow deter the monsters that lurk on the fringes of our society. This approach manifestly hasn't worked and instead makes things worse. It's time time find a better way. Polanski should be publically humiliated, as I think he probably has been, made to do penance, not necessarily imprisonment (the two are not synonymous) and made to pay a very heavy fine which should go to support of the real victims of sociopathic sex crimes which have for too long been overlooked by an admittedly warped society. Anyone who thinks that all young women are innocent or not active players in sexual intrigue and power play have not understood the human history nor the dynamic of human sexuality. Again, this is not to excuse Polanski but it must be seen in realistic light and not as a case of a violent monster attacking a frightened pre-sexual and inexperienced female. To fail to ignore this trivializes the cases where we do actually have pathologic monsters who really do violently and sexually assault children, not just in the legal sense but in the very real sense.

Hey asshole he was found guilty and fled before sentencing. Limitations only count for filing charges not from fleaing sentencing. He is a pussy a monster . And harry those films u love so much shouldn't have been made in the first place since he should have been in prison. He got away with a crime for 30 years and was allowed to continue to do what he loved most. He owes the u.s. 30 years of hard time back. Shame on you hosting this screening and for trying to start a fight with the talkbackers wit your contest entry headline. You called his rape of a child a 'mistake' which proves how stupid you are. statute of limitations

    by jccalhoun

The statute of limitations might be expired for child rape but every day he's not in jail he's committing the crime of being a fugitive. As far as the actual child rape is concerned, the court records which Polanski didn't deny contain testimony from the girl swearing that she repeatedly said no. The Smoking Gun has the whole thing. Here's the part of the testimony where the girl describes the rape. http://is.gd/8cUVE

Your comments suggests a misunderstand on your part. People aren't mad at Polanski because he felt attracted to a thirteen year old girl (which would be ephebophilia, and isn't particularly abnormal). People are mad because he DRUGGED AND RAPED HER THEN FLED THE LAW.

"...that the statute of limitations for whatever he did 20-30 years ago, ran out?"

Irrelevant. He was caught and confessed, and went to trial. The statute of limitations don't apply in those circumstances. You can't be found GUILTY, and then just go to another country until the clock runs out.

I don't condone what he did or did not do. But come on guys, it was decades ago! Let the man just make the movies we love and let it go! He didn't kill anyone and from my understanding, he never raped the girl...it was consensual. For the lil kiddies on the talkbacks, that means she said "yes."

She didn't. She said no, EVEN DESPITE the drugs. Polanski didn't dispute that. It's also irrelevant, though; a 13 year old CAN'T give consent to sex with an adult. Even if she said 'yes', that's not legal consent.

but that doesn't mean we have to be. While in the eyes of the law, a thirteen year old is a thirteen year old; to me, a person who isn't a lawyer and has no interest in the legal process, there's a world of difference between breaking into an orphanage and diddling an innocent little choirgirl, and getting it on with a girl who was brought into his presence for one purpose. What he did was fucked up, for sure, but the real villain here is the girl's mother who brought here there.

Why do you do it, Harry?

    by skraggo

Why do you even bother to post any Polanski-related articles on the site, KNOWING that the ONLY discussion in the ensuing TalkBack is going to be about The Crime???? Having said that, permit me to chime in with my tupence. Most of us seem to get it -- Polanski is a child rapist and should be punished accordingly. He also makes good movies. How anybody can say that the latter in any way nullifies the former is beyond my comprehension. Also, anybody who tries to argue that the child's giving "consent" in any way mitigates the fact that this man had sex with a 13 year old should promptly feed their own genitals to a badger. Fuck... are you kidding me???? So all of you assholes trying to somehow shift the blame to the girl -- You'd all be fine with a grown man fucking your 13 year old daughter, as long as the kid gave him the go-ahead? What kind of a man fucks a child? And what kind of a man would give that man a free pass for it? What kind of a man wouldn't want his balls on a platter and his head on a pike? And Harry, it's pretty disappointing for you to finally chime in on the issue, only to lament the impact Polanski's exile has had on YOUR relationship to his cinematic work, and how you feel cheated that you didn't get some kind of post-prison gritty world weary works of cinematic genius from the man. You didn't explicitly touch on your opinion of the crime itself, as a crime, and therefore you come off as a Polanski apologist who is more concerned with his filmmaking than with the fact that he fucked somebody's 13 year old daughter. If that's where you stand on it, then that's pretty shitty. If you want to clarify your position, please do. Tell me if I've pegged you wrong here. You talk so often about your love of kids and your hopes of being a father one day. I guess I expected a little more rage for justice from you.

I like the thought of watching the movie on the internet (not that I would EVER suggest or do that, of course). I say we all take our $12.50 that would have gone to this movie, catch the flick somewhere, um, with limited surcharges (again, never would suggest finding it on the internet..that's illegal folks!) and send what would have been ticket money to buy whatever prosecuter is up for hanging Polanski in court a big juicy steak dinner. This is like Charles Manson's Folk music...just because I'm curious to hear what the heck kind of music that crazy bastard would put on an album, it doesn't mean I want to fund the producer's new Hawaiian condo. And I have to say..the fact that any person on this site not suffering from some form of brain trauma or severe mental retardation thinks for a millisecond that the willingness of a 13 year old girl has ANYTHING to do with either the legality or morality of what Polanski did is flat out the dumbest person on the planet. No exageration...if you believe it was in any way OK just because the girl was willing, go to the mirror and take a look at one sorry ass dumbfuck.

If my daughter were almost 14 and had been having sex for a year already with an older partner and was therefore already sexually experienced, s the young woman says she was, and I knowingly let her go someplace where I knew she was going to pretend and allow others to think she was 17, drink alcohol which she was already doing, and take quaaludes which she had already done in earlier episodes with others, which she says she did, to have de-facto consensual sex activity with a man who was much older than she was, I'd suppose I'd do what the mother of this young woman who was involved with this Polanski person did. First off, after seeing that the young woman's physical and mental health were intact, I'd want to resolve it and not get myself in deeper trouble realizing that I might be statutorily liable for the crime myself, which would send me to prison and my daughter into the states foster care system...I might say "well, well, well,...just like your grandmother who also got pregnant at 12 or 13 or 14 (some people mature sexually more rapidly and adamant about wanting sex with older people...it's called 'socio-biological instinct').
Again, I'm not saying that Polanski was admirable in this. I clearly think he wasn't, but I also don't see it as a simple case of a violent psychosexual monster preying on little girls who continues to roam the streets abductiong the young and defenseless and sexually assaulting them. There are monsters out there. We should guard against them and if possible address their psychotic behaviors and certainly take them away from free society as treatment if not as punishment, but that clearly was not the case with Polanski according to those who were involved with this case including the young woman. Additionally Polanski did not flee, deny his wrong-doing and he reportedly made a generous financial contribution to the young woman to compensate for his crime. To simply treat every statutory violation of our morality laws as if each and every one were the worst imaginable expression of these crimes is willfully ignorant of the circumstances, the nature of humans and the laws we have to a point that we'd almost deserve the terrible prison and mental health systems that we now have. I am of a mind that we deserve better and in fact need better if we're going to really advance society. If people wish to think that this was the worst case scenario, they are welcome to do so but it ignores the facts as presented in this case.
If I were a parent and my child were violently abused by a sexual predator, I would indeed be a gelded cunt if I did not want revenge. That is human nature too, and laws are sometimes to designed to protect us from that.
But if I equate every violation with the worst imaginable scenario, refused to look at the facts as they happened, and the actual circumstances, ignoring human nature and how people do make mistakes and even bad decisions, I would be far worse, and part of the problem as well.

It doesn't matter if the child begged Polanski to have sex with her. He still had sex with a minor. That's statutory rape. Then he fled the country and has been avoiding coming to the USA for decades because he would be thrown in jail the minute he set foot on US soil. If that ain't fleeing then I don't know what fleeing is. Moreover, if you look at the official court testimony the girl testified that she told him no several times and Polanski never challenged that account. http://is.gd/8cUVE So no matter how much people try to paint the girl as sexually active or "asking for it" the court documents do not support that. Polanski raped a child and fled from the country rather than face the consequences.

I would disagree in that that particulars of this case do matter. They matter as to how the court agreed to his plea. That's what statutory means.
You've obviously done some research on the subject. The wikipedia entry is pretty comprehensive and I think fairly neutral on the particulars. As I sad before, I think Polanski should have faced the cosequences and the record shows that he was prepared to do exactly that until the case became politicized by social conservatives for whom the statutory reality of the case was unacceptible and for whom it became a politcal football.

One could create a long litany of noteworthy works or art (and even religion) that feature sex between couples where one or both would, by our modern victorian standards, be considered too young to be fully invested as sexual adults based on choronological/legal age.
