Joseph Kosinski Talks About THE BLACK HOLE Redux - And It's Kinda Cool!!
Merrick here...
TRON LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski spoke with MTV about his re-imagining of THE BLACK HOLE. Sounds like script work will begin in a few months, but a few critical...and telling...decisions have already been made. And, for anyone who has any level of affection for the original, this is pretty exciting.
"It won't be a sequel like 'Tron,'" he explained. "This one will be a reimagining. For me, it would be taking ideas and iconic elements that struck me as timeless and cool and preserving them while weaving a new story around them that's a little more '2001.'"
Among the elements Kosinski intends to keep are the red robot, the gnarly death of Cygnus' top dog Dr. Alex Durant (played originally by Anthony Perkins) and the design of the ship.
...reveals Joseph in THIS discussion with MTV, which goes on to site Kosinski's thoughts on said "ship".
"The design of the Cygnus ship is one of the most iconic spaceships ever put to film."
Now, the Asshole Geek in me is compelled to point out that Anthony Perkins' Alex Durant character was not "Cygnus' top dog" as indicated by MTV - he was actually part of (the leader of?) Palomino expedition who discovers & boards the long-missing Cygnus early in the film. I'm such a dork. Lest you forget his Cuisinartish demmise, it can be seen (starting at approx. 1:25) in THIS clip.
I hope the "reimagining" retains something of the original's title sequence, which I always thought was a pretty damn groovy opening.
Here's a look at at the Cygnus, which I strongly agree is one of the most powerfully iconic Sci Fi vessels ever. LIGHTED TOY! LIGHTED TOY! I WANT A LIGHTED TOY! Sorry about that...
Check out the MTV piece, which goes on to say that the new BLACK HOLE will utilize harder science than Gary Nelson's 1979 original, which was all over the place in that regard.
This is all very interesting, and promising. Wondering if the "zombie" crew will be retained - seems like that might be a potential point of deviation? Also very curious as to the tone of the new film - given the original's decidedly bleak/oppressive atmosphere...

Hard Science ALWAYS makes a better film!
-
I love the end of the movie where the bad guy ends up trapped inside Maximillian in hell. That always struck me as pretty tough for a disney film
-
Awesome ship. Do think they'll have floaty big-eyed robots?
-
Wow that was my first post ever on this site O_o. Been reading for years though.
-
which is now called a re-imagining.
-
You decide to be just as wrong?Durant was merely the SCIENCE OFFICER of the Palomino, not the "leader". That was clearly Robert Forrester, you know THE CAPTAIN? The guy that was ordering the crew around? The one calling all the shots? How could Perkins be the "leader" of the expedition and then decide to stay behind with Dr. Reinhart? See how that makes no sense? However, I'm psyched to get another telling of this story. It's certainly a favorite from my youth. I just hope they keep the "Disneyfying" to a minimum because one thing that kept pulling me out of the original was the stupid giant cartoon-like eyes on the Vincent robot.
-
More 2001-like = good!
Cartoony robots = shite!
Please no! -
For a good Hard "R" rating. Then it will be worth the reimagining. >D
There better not be any friggin intergalactic hockey playing tooth fairies...... -
Saw this in California back in the day, and had the fortune of seeing a sneak peek at a new comedy film right afterward - the original "Airplane." That was a great night!
-
In various material, Perkins' character is referred to as the expedition's "civilian leader". Forster was the muscle. Look up the character via Google. Personally, I think this delineation not particularly clear in the film - hence my use of the QUESTION MARK.
Durant character IMDB write-up --->Dr. Alex Durant led a science expedition on the U.S.S. Palomino along with Dr. Kate McCrae in the year 2130. The mission was to last 5 years, and would entail searching for intelligent life on other worlds (a slang term for this being used at the time was "habitable life"). It is unknown whether Durant was married or had children, although it is suspected that he was single, devoting the majority of his life to scientific truth. His eagerness for exploring often bordered on wreckless, sometimes ignoring dangerous situations in order to learn more. This style frequently clashed with the commander of Palomino, Captain Dan Holland. Durant was exceptionally intelligent, caring and personable- but rather obsessive in matters of science, sometimes risking his own safety (and the safety of others). In spite of this (and perhaps because of it), Durant advanced rapidly and was quickly afforded his own mission which, until the discovery on Christmas eve of the Cygnus and black hole, had been a colossal failure. Next to Kate McCrae, the only other person he is remotely close to on board is reporter Harry Booth. They had worked together off and on through the years, and developed something of a friendship. One of his greatest idols had been Dr. Hans Reinhardt, having read much about the commander's exploits as a young man. Unfortunately, it is his total belief in Dr. Reinhardt that leads to Durant's downfall. In one last, heroic act- Durant tries to protect his friend and associate Dr. McCrae from Maximillian and is killed by the robot's whirling blades.

the eventual release of the original on Blu, bring on 7.1 surround which will sound awesome.
-
I swear that those effects are better than any modern day space ship effects. CGI, unless minimal, blows. Those big models convince me far quicker.
-
But I'm not holding my breath
-
Ruined the movie for me. Vincent the big-eyed Disney robot didn't bother me near as much as the floating tin can with a voice that sounded like a character right out of Gunsmoke...
-
still scares the crap out of me.
-
He certainly talks a good game, but whether he can deliver on these two delicious geek projects...but I hate it when directors say their film will "be like 2001" just to give it a sheen of credibility. That's a hack talking. If Tron Legacy turns out great, I'll be salivating for this.
-
Yes.

I always loved the start of the theme tune. It's just a shame the composer didn't know what else to do with it and made it tediously repetative.
-
worst role (at least of his movies that I've seen). Sleepwalks through the entire movie while Max Schell chews any scenery unfortunate enough to get near him. Throw in Ernest Borgnine apparently under some commitment to Disney to stumble through a film and you have one of the worst movies Disney ever made. Still trying to figure out why Comcast's channel guide writers give this thing three stars.
-
... If they did the art direction and FX right, had no cutesy robots and got rid of the Christer ending.
-
Kosinski certainly SOUNDS like he 'gets it'. Hope it turns out well.

and Space Ninjas
-
Saw this as a kid and it really got me. It was Disney's first PG film and boy was it a departure. That end sequence was nuts. Get rid of the cheese and this film will rock.
-
Its not run by film geeks, but by incompetent morons. They even misspelled "Vader" as "VADAR" when they aired the Star Wars films last year. Fucking idiots over there.
-
That was friggin' creepy when the mask was revealed.
-
Its pretty damn amazing.
-
...a lot more screaming.
-
Spot on, John Barry's score is what makes the movie actually. I remember seeing the movie as an impressionable 5 year old in the cinema and being blown away by the title sequence. I used to have the Read-Along record and book when I was a kid too, great memories.
-
And it was a flop at the box office too. Why the hell is Disney throwing money at that piece of blow? Well, why are they throwing money at the Muppets? Oh, right. BECAUSE DISNEY SUCKS NOW. Jesus, and I had such high hopes when Eisner got booted and Iger took over...oh the pain...
-
Maybe if you're a crazy person I guess.
-
Black holes suck. Touche =).
-
...THE BLACK HOLE comes from my family living overseas...and well meaning relatives sending us packages of American stuff.
I'd open the little package labeled FlickaPoo and say "YES! STAR WARS STUFF!!"......and then...
..."wait, what the fuck? I don't...this isn't...this shit isn't STAR WARS!..."Disappointed. I'd try to go on...pick up the pieces of my life...pretend that one of the robots was R2-D2...but it wasn't the same. Now it looks interesting though. -
Also the Cygnus robot design are good but the kid friendly floating trash can was beyond bad. There's a good movie buried in the original, it just needs to be dug out.

My eyes were WIDE open at the end when it went all Bugnuts Hell opened up. What The Fuck Disney???? Thankyou for warping my brain at a really young age. No, really, thankyou....
-
What about Max? He was pretty damned Iconic. So was the other Max... Maximilian Schell in his full-on Nemonic glory. They're part of the Cygnus in my mind, can't have that ship without those two inhabiting it.
I really hope they dispense with the robots with the South Park painted-on eyeballs though... that was a source of much ridicule (and rightfully so) when the movie was new.
(also... one thing about The Black Hole that always bugged me is the robot personalities are just like the human's personalities... all of the lines of dialog are tonally interchangeable. The characters of the Palomino were all pretty bland. The most interesting die in the first 20 minutes!)

Can't they just do what they did to Star Trek original series?
by mr gorilla
Brush up the print, do a respectful job on the effects, release it in HD. The reason that the Cygnus is so impressive is because the director took his time revealing it - in other words because of the slow pace which a 2011 Black Hole will never have. And to D.Vader, who posts about Barry's score, I say yes, yes, yes. It's brilliant.
-
I saw it for the first time 2 months ago maybe and was surprised at how involving it was. Loved the score, loved the creepy story, understood the family-film robots. It was like a scifi thriller for the whole family to enjoy. I totally dug it.
-
Perkins' death always disturbed the crap out of me. Also the use of light cursing in a Disney film seemed pretty warped. Because it STILL has a bit of Disneyish glow about it. These half-assed elements at being "adult" just seemed tonally wrong. Like the cinematographer of Freaky Friday somehow messed up and got a bunch of stage hands on the edge of the screen smoking cigarettes and looking at tame girlie mags.

I was eight, in Sydney with my Dad for the day and we had a few hours to kill till my mum arrived at the airport. We found a small theatre and they had The Black Hole playing. My dad saw Disney on the poster and walked us in... To me this was my Star Wars. From the beginning I was enthralled. My dad enjoyed me enjoying it. The ending just scared me shitless. My dad just sat there and let it hit me. Fuck, one of my greatest experiences ever.

Saw a making of book years ago that had concept art of Maximilian. Instead of legs, his bottom half looked like a mace. Pretty cool looking and more logical than giving him legs since he floats rather than walks.

I saw this movie as a kid and loved it - even had a figure of one of the robots (unfortunately not Maximilian).I watched it again a few years ago with my kids and they loved it! What was interesting is how my perception changed - I still love the idea, but the science was really bad - When a near perfect sphere asteroid breaks through the hull nobody gets sucked out or has a problem breathing?.To me the best thing about the film is the somewhat dark/bleak setting - I liked it as a kid too. Keep Maximilian, keep the converted crew, and keep the somber tone and I'm in.If done right Disney could have a true 'family' film where parents aren't dragged to the theater.Final thought: I saw a few post wondering why they'd remake this film... My guess is that people who loved it as kids have seen it again and realized the potential the story has. I hope they attain it.

Keep it PC, please.

YouTube. They make them cutesy on purpose, so that they don't creep you out. Well, the ones covered with a Real Doll-like skin are freaky, but, the big-eyed ones predominate.
-
For one thing it wasn't that bad, though the ending was weak. There was a lot of good stuff visually and aurally. It was quite an interesting movie overall with enough good stuff to keep and enough bad stuff to dump. Also, according to one of Gene Siskel's many laws, always feel free to remake a "bad movie." Never remake a good movie, however. A re-do might actually work in this instance.
-
for the oprah winfrey bio-pic?
-
1. A much cooler "shooting gallery" scene with the floating R2D2 hillbilly robot..(Bob?)
2. The scene where they are running across the bridge and that giant fireball is rolling toward them...that scene was always a favorite.
3. A little more upbeat feeling -
KEEP
- Cygnus design
- Bob & Vincent design
- Double-Barrelled laser guns
KILL
- Palomino design
- Captain STAR and robot soldier designs
- Zombie crew
UPDATE
- Use elements from John Barry's score, like Superman Returns' score.
- Maximillian's design.
- Opening sequence.
- Bizarre, fucked up ending. -
Here's how I read this statement: "So, like, I'm just going to sort of take some cool stuff that someone else came up with, and, y'know, sort of do what I want with it, like I'm some kid playing with toys that someone else built and making up my own story. It'll be, like, cool."This is a bad idea. The original film was flawed, but crazily brilliant in its flaws. All w're going to get here is what we always get with "reimaginings"--watered-down content, sanitized concepts, blandly younger cast, and overall diminshed returns.I don't buy the "harder science" angle one bit. If you want a hard-sci-fi black hole movie, have a creative spine and make your own original one, or adapt a book. This joker is taking a shortcut to nowhere.
-
The robots alone should make this worth seeing (assuming they don't go and Michael Bay it all).
I do hope they do one thing: BRING BACK JOHN BARRY'S ICONIC THEME!!! And don't fucking hire Danny Elfman, he's gone to shit. -
From the point of view of science, it sucks. But as for a popcorn film, I always enjoyed it. It had good effects for the time, a compelling story, and was just a lot of fun, though I wish it wasn't as depressing as it felt in some parts.
That said, there are a few reasons it didn't do so well: 1. PG Disney was a crazy thing to try...people didn't like that idea back then. 2. The science was flawed. 3. The ending was confusing to kids, and deeper than most average people wanted to experience in such a film.
That said, the basic story/idea of the film was great and remaking/imagining this movie is not a bad idea. They can take it from decent to great. This isn't like remaking something that is already a beloved classic. This is remaking something that most people know is a flawed film. Sounds like a good idea to me. -
Disney's first R rated movie was Ruthless People in 1986.
-
Scratch that. Down and Out in Beverly Hills beat it by a couple of months.
-
Although I don't know how a spaceship that looks the size of a football field perch itself alongside a black hole..But outside of Maximillian Schell who seemed to know what hokum he was in, the acting from the rest of the cast couldn't be more wooden if they tried. Disney basically saw the success of Star Wars, plugged it into one of their biggest live action successes, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and came up with The Black Hole. But there is enough iconic imagery from the original to crossover and make improvements. Question? Are any of the Ellenshaws available to supervise what I'm sure will be digital matting..?
-
ghost ship atmosphere of the original.
-
Fuck, maybe I should have kept them, just like I should have kept the figures from 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', 'Battlestar Galactica' and 'Star Wars'. Extra fuck.

Wakka wakka wakka! -
Oh that's right, to shred your uppity crewmates.Spacesuits are for pussies.
-
I see some folks bashing the odd contrast between light and dark in the original film. That's not a problem--it's part of what makes it so surreal and crazily brilliant in its own way.Little doubt that it was an odd mix-up of things which, in retrospect, were highly unlikely. And that's why it's so great. The contrast of the sort of goofy robot & human elements, in this overwhelming atmosphere of doom and despair, is what set the old film apart. It's still striking and unnerving. The late 70s and early 80s were a sort of fertile period for this kind of thing, where creativity and odd compromises produced really weird tones and atmosphere which haunt us to this day, in a good way. Today, everyone's too hyper-self-aware, creating in such a 'meta' way, to allow this kind of cracked brilliance to slip through the net. Everything's too over-considered, self-conscious, and smoothed-out. And we wonder why the new stuff is so uninspiring. Formula + technology does not = good art. Removing flaws doesn't increase profundity.
-
1979...things have changed since then, hope the movie updates. But I still recall (in addition to the wild ending) the scene of Maximilian Schell screaming "List to me! List to me!" as the zombie crew stood stoically, watching him die and their ship get implode!
-
... and it's a charming movie. I can't help liking it quite a lot, flaws and all. Which, frankly, i was suprised to find so few. Yes, the science is dodgy at best, but still, it delivers the mood quite well. And for a Disney movie it's suprisingly dark and gritty. That was the thing that most suprised me about it when i rewatched it. And i love those old fashioned special effects. And soem of them must had been extremely hard to achieve, with the technology and limitations of the time. But the best thing about the old The Black Hole, i have to say, is the John Barry score. It's one of his best scores, in a career filled with great scores. I can't ge enough of The Black Hole's score. Amazing, amazing stuff.
-
I saw it as a late teenager, upon its initial release, and did not care for it then. Re-watched it recently, and do not like it any better.
-
Sucks to be you, friend. I usually dislike Disney stuff, i'm allergic to their bullshit, but The Black Hole is an exceptional exception. And the score owns. At the very least you have to agree the score is pretty good.
-
Unappologeticaly grim and dark, morbid and full of desperation. And screw the nancy-boys who can't deal with a darkly moody movie. Not every movie has to be an anoying hysterical cocaine-snorting happy experience. Occasionally, a movie can be dark, you know? Certainly it didn't hurt THE DARK KNIGHT, creatively, artistically and financially.
-
came out about the same time. One sci-fi film about the nature of a being that thinks itself a god, and another about an intersellar version of hell...my we have evolved from then haven'...oh wait. No wonder we embrace Moon and District 9. Sci-fi films that have some thought and ideas behind them, beside bam-crash-boom.
-
... this way comes, dragonslayer... those were the days.
-
I'll be happy. It's about the only thing they got right.
-
Who cares what the supplimental material says. If it isn't on the screen it doesn't count. Holland was the leader of the Palomino crew. That is like some Trekkie who takes issue with a Star Trek movie because it contradicts something that was said in a Star Trek novel written fifteen years ago.
-
Dark? Yes. But I don't agree with you completely on the rest. It would be cool to see a darker edgier film that a family could go to together. If the original was PG-13 or R I'd say go for it make it as dark as possible and very dystopian. This was a PG Disney flick and I'd like them to keep it there, but not go all happy feel good either.I watched 'Something Wicked this way Comes' with my kids (9, 8, and 5) and they loved it and wanted me to suggest others like it. For them it was something fresh and new.
-
Rip off 2001 enough already?
-
I just watched it again and noticed that during the Maximillian and Vincent fight, that when Vince is holding Max in place while the crew escapes, Max smacks him in the face with his RoboCock to knock him away O_o
W....T...F... ROFL. Thats pure Robot Gold! -
With the Maximillian-Reinhart Satan presiding over a robot hell in one of the coolest, most fucked up images EVER in a Disney movie since the original Fantasia? At the same time, it's far from perfect. Oddly, it drags the most during the action scenes. The banter between the kid and the robot also could fly right out the window.
-
...is clearly a baby of the nineties (read "fuckwit").
-
I loved the trailer for this, but when I saw it in the theater I was feeling kinda let down due to how much I thought it would rule. Still I had the vinyl "Story of" record to listen to until the VHS eventually came out. Just bought the DVD for nostalgia's sake and gotta say (like others have said) there's a great movie in there if they strip out the marketing-friendly robots and rework the story. The effects ruled and the score was great.
-
I forgot to mention I think it was one of if not the last effects work that Peter Ellenshaw did for the movies. Gorgeous ship design and technically amazing work for the day it was made in.
-
Don't remember much beyond that, yet I clearly recall every other movie from that time. Need to see it again. Probably one of the reasons it got a poor reception back in the day was because how old fashioned the aesthetic was, compared to contemporary stuff.
-
... To have an Overture in the beginning of the movie. Good on them for that, giving us a chance to really appreciate John Barry's score
-
You are right in that it's possible to make a edgier and challenging PG- movie and still make it family friendly. I«'d say the original THe Black hole is one such movie, in that back then the PG-13 classification didn't existed, so that was it.When i'm saying a darker, borderline suicide depressing THE BLACK HOLE, i was thinking of how with Battlestar Galactica, they turned a lightweight show for the whole family into an fully adult show through and through, with no concessions to niceties and puppies. I'd like that for a new The Black Hole, and even more intelligent and though demanding. But that's me talking.
-
We don't always agree, but you said it, brother! You said it!
-
The original Black Hole had much going for it in the way of atmosphere and brilliant ship design (particularly the Cygnus. While everyone else–read: The Enterprise–was going smooth and sleek, Disney went all gothic cathedral and baroque details for magnificent effect) but was hampered by mediocre writing, and a lack of focus.
Here's hoping that Joseph Kosinski goes more in the direction of Event Horizon, and the film is released under Touchstone Pictures (a Disney shingle) so a little blood can be shone without scandalizing anyone. -
Great concept that never quite got off of the ground.
-
Dragonslayer indeed!! It's a damn shame and a crime there was never a proper DVD relased of that movie. That movie is worthy of Criterion.
-
Also have to agree with Revenge_of_Fett in relation to Alex Durant's position aboard the Cygnus. To anyone that's watched the film he clearly was not calling the shots.
That's just using the movie as a guide, which is the most important measure. -
I do think the writing of THE BLACK HOLE is pretty good. It's far more intelligent and subtle then most give it credit. The movie actually tries and suceeds in having a theme, and even mannaged to pull the treat of having a complex and sympathetic villain, even if he did monstrous things. The movie actually puts the really heartless villain as a robot, which is entirely fitting. As i rewatched THE BLACK HOLE as an adult, i was suprised at how many adult elements the movie has, and how seriously to takes it's own themes. No small feat for a "children's movie", as it was sold back then.

I think it's fucfking obvious that Durant was not the top dog
by asimovlives
The real top dog was the captain, played by Robert Forster. Durant even obeys the captain's direct orders. He's more like an subaltern science officer, like the Spock of the ship, or even a civilian who's under the captain's authority, like a botanist in the ships of old would be to the captain. The captain is the boss indeed.

by the green gargantua
I believe his new findings are pretty scary, like they move, or more so teleport.
-
Or maybe there can be a new robot named "Hawking".
(I almost wrote "camero in the movie". That woulda been funny.) -
black holes are worrying enough, without the idea that they 'teleport'
-
i had a theory once that they were all in fact the same black hole but we don't realise as we're not thinking about space folded. we expect it to fold round an axis
like in 3d or 2d paper
but in 10 dimensions the fold wouldnt look like that, so the black hole in andromeda could be same black hole you see in orion. just as the two photons in 'quantum entanglement' are, in fact, the same photons. -
"the same photon (singular)"

by the green gargantua
They should truly get Hawking to consult on this bitch.
-
The Black Hole turned out to be a pretty average sci-fi film made purly to cash in on star wars success. the end however is one of the most fucking dark and bleakest endings of any sci fi film. I remember watching it thinking how this was so untypical of disney especially for a film that was essential a U certificate. Remember this was the old disney as well not the new one. If they can make the new one in a similar tone...ditch the R2D2 clones and keep john barrys score..count me in !
-
Nice, like Wheelers electron. But, they do differ from each other in a few parameters like mass and angular momentum.I think Hawking only revised his opinion on black hole evaporation and information loss.
-
I had no idea this movie had any kind of following. I mean, I'm aware of a lot of sci-fi and fantasy films that have become cult classics. But honestly, I didn't think anyone gave a shit about this movie beyond hype around its release. I was surprised to see how long it was before someone said it sucked. But no matter how many fans, I can't imagine calling anything from the movie "iconic".

Of course, if my memory is correct, the other flick I forced them to rent repeatedly was Moonraker...

I don't think I'm the only one who feels that 'Family' films have disappeared and been replaced with 'Kid' films - that call themselves family.I'm no prude, I just think that Hollywood needs to respect kids and families and give them something good to see.Hollywood should also never release a PG-13 Die Hard film (but they did - bastards). In the end give me hard, gritty, dark, dystopian, violent films that make me think. AND make other thought provoking, darker, family films too. Stop making crap with annoying kiddie music, fart jokes, and non-existent storylines.

Hawking did revise his controversial opinion on information loss. His peers had pretty much demonstrated he was wrong. He said his theory was correct if you brought alternative universes into play. As if he has been saying 2+2=5, if you count the -1 universe.
-
While I agree that there are traces of intelligence in the writing, I also think that you cannot deny that some of it is really, really wooden.
I mean, Antony Perkins was a good actor, yet the best moment that Alex Durant had in the film was when Max cuisinarted him. Every word out of his mouth felt somehow as if he were sleepwalking though the entire production; as if there was someone just off-camera holding up cue cards.
Then there was Timothy Bottoms, who is (I believe he is still alive) a good actor, yet he's in a role that would be better suited for someone younger.
Then there's just about everything out of Yvette Mimieux's mouth.
I guess that's part of the charm of the film for me, that something so clunky dialog-wise is so enjoyable to watch.
Btw, apropos of nothing, John Barry's score was really good, but didn't play nearly as crucial a role in The Black Hole as Wendy Carlos did for Tron.
Yet, posters here for some strange reason seem to be content that Def Punk is doing scoring duties for the sequel. -

Thats right! Well, I agree as I do entertain the many worlds mod
by the green gargantua
of the universe. There was something about black holes moving though, I will have to look it up. I think there was even Hubble photographs of a black hole destroying a solar system, a black hole that had sort of appeared from who knows where.
Now that the LHC is back on line we may have some answers to the multiverse question, a question that my six hundred sixteenth self is well aware of! heheh. -
I had no idea...
-
I love the original. GREAT atmosphere and overall chemistry despite outdated FX. But if it must be done, PLEASE don't fuck with the desgins of Maxmillian, Vincent, and the Palimino. Those were classic designs. As a matter of fact don't mess with ANY of the original designs! Bastards!
-
The Black Hole doesn't suck you fucking child murderer.
-
Creepy spaceship where you end up in hell...'Event Horizon'.
-
Yep. Those guys did not have a beef with Indy, they had a beef with the idiots like you acting like it was the end of the world and Indy 4 sucked, which it didn't. Stop crying asshole. Get laid.
-
OK I'll bite. How about the Cygnus?Maximillian?Dr. Reinheart?A crazy awesome score?Running from a giant fiery "meterorite"?That big blue spinny thing?
-
hanging from some fishing line in the gameroom.
always wanted a B.O.B. though.
cant understand the Slim Pickens hate. If I had a real robot, and he talked like Slim Pickens, that would be the shit. -
That was a bad ass score, that pussy beta band used it in one of their shitty tunes, but still haunting as fuck. Well, at least the peek is, the rest is typical space movie crap. Totally feels like a downward spiral.
the cute robots look like Southpark characters and can use an update, but if Max gets ass raped like Gort did I will choke a bitch. -
Right on dude. I'll add Max/Reinhart on top of the mountain silhouette in hell.
-
at the cinema when it first came out and the ending freaked me out.
-
...remake ("re-imagining", whatever) that I'm actually interested in seeing. It would be really cool if the eventual DVD/BluRay release of this film included the original as well (that's you I'm talking to Disney).

The first erect roboschlong in a kids flick? Check it out @ 39 secs... http://www.youtube.com /watch? v=J1dkS3J_Fo0&NR=1# movie_player (remove der spaces)

"Solarbabies" and "Battle Beyond the Stars" are probably next.
-
right off the bat - no freakin' kids (no teenagers, either). VINCENT was smart, but the sissy cutesy design has got to go. the opening needs to be damn near identical to the original, green wire-frames and all, and the score has got to be the original. the last two are non-negotiable. and please, for the love of BALE, no one who even remotely resembles ERNEST BORGNINE. i can't even watch EFNY anymore because of him
-
I dig the original 1979 version of Disney's Black Hole for many reasons but won't gush here just yet. Wanted to follow up to what Frank Cotton just mentioned: what if some bug-nuts casting happens and Ernest Borgnine plays Harry Booth AGAIN in this version?
-
Maximilian killing Perkin's disturbed the shit out of me as a kid. Fuck that, it's still disturbing and you don't see any gore! The sound of his gurgling and ones imagination are quite perfectly enough! Just like the shark in Jaws. You didn't see it for the first half of the film. That chick being eaten alive by something unseen is fucking genius. Imagination goes a long way. Add some blood flying everywhere and that would be the cherry on top!

Merrick, You're no Asshole Geek: I thought the same thing!

I was gonna post it down here too, until I got to your line about it being the Palomino instead. Well, maybe that means both of us are asshole geeks. Aggh!

BEST ROBOT VOICES EVER: Slim Pickens and Scatman Crothers
by yotzvonfrelnik
Crothers was Jazz in the original Transformers in case anyone yells "WHO?"
-
It keeps on shitting out the same regurgitated crap, year after year, then it eats it and the cycle starts again.
Hollywood, you are a rotting, festering asshole that needs to disappear. -
but have yet to let my kids watch it...not sure if they're ready for it...they might be though, they just recently watched a few scenes from The Wall, and can't stop singing 'we don't need no education'...so who knows....as to the film, it was a weird highlight for me as a kid...it wasn't the space-opera orgy that starwars was, and it wasn't the critical darling that 2001 was either...it was somewhere else completely...dark, moody and haunting....from the score to the design of the Cygnus, this movie made a decades lasting impression on me.
-
"...And goodness knows I've seen quite a few, ducky! OH, NO, I DIDN'T!"
-
There is nothing wrong with Moonraker. I own it on blu-ray! Along with King Kong '76 on blu-ray! I will fistfight anyone who argues.
-
But the script needs to be chnaged a lot. The original is almost schizophrenic. It felt like two different movies: a poorly done kid flick and an ampituous sci-fi horror. Just while the better part started to kick in fully it was nullified with something utterly idiotic.
-
I saw this movie at a drive-in double feature with Clash of the Titans in 1981. It definately stayed with my impressionable little 6 yr old mind for a looooooong time.
-
Hopefully someday they'll dust off this movie's deleted scenes, get a decent "making of" doc assembled and give THE BLACK HOLE the Blu Ray release it deserves.
-
I like the original a lot, got the dvd etc, but its a film that tried to walk in both the sci-fi fantasy and science fact worlds and ended up serving neither. Its always been a great idea on paper and i think revisiting it, in todays world, should yield a better balance between these aspects.
-
Actually show why Dr. Hans Reinhardt deserves to be in hell.
-
Matter does teleport, it's a very well known fact since the 80s or even before. but it happens only at a subatomic quantum level. Also, the chances for a spontaneous teleportation are so small, the universe wouldn't had enough time in it's whole existence for it to ever happen with a high degree of probability.
-
because I don't really know the movie. And that's all that matters. :)
-
"The Dude" as eco-terrorist...Charles Grodin sporting the worst mustache ever..and of course young, nubile Jessica Lange..and another beautiful score by Mr. Barry. Now that I listed all that, I'd like to see it again, cheesy '70s dialogue, bad special effects and all.
-
So your kids can watch part of 'The Wall', but you're concerned about 'The Black Hole'?I don't think they'll have an issue. ;)
-
Thank God you saw it too and Im not just some Robot perv...Whew!
-
So I guess they won't be searching for "habitable life" in this one :)
Really like what I've heard about this so far, hafta have Maximillian & agree the Cygnus design is totally classic just hope they can also get in some of the original score in some way. -
Nobby liked this film. Nobby had toy Vincent. Nobby still has trading cards
