Abrams’ MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE IV Set For Memorial Day 2011!!

Published at:  Feb 09, 2010 11:40:36 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

The project still doesn’t have a director, but Paramount says “Mission: Imposssible IV” will hit cinemas in about 16 months: Memorial Day 2011.

Now the news that may trouble some.

The script is still by latter-day “Alias” writer-producers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, working from an idea by franchise star Tom Cruise and “M:I 3” co-writer-director (and “M:I 4” producer) J.J. Abrams.

If you loved the American TV series “October Road” and “Life on Mars” (I did not), you’ll be happy to learn screenwriters Appelbaum and Nemec masterminded both.

If you loved the latter three years of “Alias” (I did not), you’ll be happy to learn Appelbaum and Nemec joined that show midway through season three.

Appelbaum and Nemec are also masterminding ABC’s fast-approaching thriller “Happy Town,” whose pilot Televisionary deemed “ridiculous and insipid.”

Appelbaum and Nemec’s other writing credits include episodes of “Martial Law,” “Profiler,”’ “Going to California,” “The Chronicle,” “She Spies,” and “Fastlane.”

Yep, time to go find some coked out wonderkind waiter in LA that's posed to be the next hot thing until he burns out at the age of 23. Until then use him like he's going to reuse every drop of heroin in that needle, and quit hiring these hacks.

    by cymbalta4thedevil

Cruise is just using Abrams' recent success for Paramount with STAR TREK to reactivate interest in the Franchise. They would rather have a STAR TREK sequel from Abrams than have him get bogged down in the more expensive and possibly less lucrative 4th MI movie. Who WILL direct it, is the question?

Antoine Fuqua, Peter Berg, Brian Singer, Stephen Hopkins, John Moore, Roger Donaldson, Andrew Davis, Wolfgang Petersen, Jan DeBont, F. by noodleshahn

is very strong. There was a good sense of teamwork and there was a good balance between quiet tension and action.

For me, the rest of the movie didn't maintain that balance. I love the first film because I think it did.

Another disappointment from 3 is the scene at the Shanghai skyrise. Luther said stealing the Rabbit's Foot was more difficult than the break-in at Langley but we never see any of it once Ethan gets in the building. I would like to have seen it.

First I liked the flick, even though it was almost exactly like an Alias episode, even down to the same structured (start precredits with the hero messed up and trapped, flashback until getting to that scene again, heck even the title cards for the different places felt like Alias).

Why is it percieved as a flop? even though worldwide gross was good, the domestic gross (the one used by studios to determined this) was 134 mill of a supossed budget of 150. MI2 grossed domestic 215 even MI 1 kicked its ass with 180 domestic with a way lower budget

I think Cruise's star is tarnished (not beyond repair, and taking into consideration he is the head of ua) but Tom's next flick after MI3 the drama Lions and Lambs bombed also it was not well recieved by critics. Next stop Valkyrie did not bombed but barely, yes it was not made to be a blockbuster but it was delayed to get in the oscar race of that year and failed at that as well.

    by bass ackwards

Orzi and Kurtzman have pretty shitty resumes too but they still put out a good product with MI3. Though I liked MI3, I also found the idea of having a franchise with tonally different entries and new directors each go around, so I hope MI4 can keep that trend up and not just do another big budget echo of Alias. I remember way back when there was talks of an MI project that was going to be helmed by Fincher then that was passed on to Carnahan, before ultimately being dropped altogether. I wonder if either of those two guys would be interested in taking another stab at it?

Having grown up watching Mission Impossible on TV, I was less then thrilled to watch the team get wiped out at the start of the first film (at least that's what I recall of it anyway).

I didn't bother continuing much with the franchise beyond that. Saw a bit of MI:3 on TV a few weeks back. Mission Impossible is supposed to be a team, it's like watching the A-Team with Face being the only survivor and carrying the show... sure, could be fun but... but... sigh....

Will Abrams lower his pants for Tom Cruise as much as he did for he former MI movie. Because the latest was "Tom & Kat's Blissful Domestic Life As If A Dumb Spy Movie". And it made me want to puke my guts out. I was actually rooting for the villain to win in MI3, and got extremely disapointed when he didn't. That's a major filmmaking fuck up right there.

    by lonegun

Whether it's as a producer or as a director, Abrams has the golden touch: LOST (television's greatest mystery), CLOVERFIELD (a refreshing entry to monster movies, which performed well at the box office), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 (the best entry in the movie franchise), STAR TREK (a major hit with audiences, incessantly entertaining). He's a major creative force in the industry right now...and a good one.

A truly awful, stupid movie. Way worse than the Transformers movies by a fucking mile. I actually kinda liked John Woo until that piece of shit graced the screen. The plot involved a race against time where the time limit became increasingly less important. Not to mention the silliest motorcycle stunts in history, enough slo-mo to make Snyder feel over indulged, and far more pigeons than should ever be oddly pushed into an action scene. god I hate that movie!

    Alias

    by normanosborne

These writers might not be great, but I wouldn't blame them for the last 3 seasons of Alias. I'd drop that squarely in the laps of the suits (read: dumbasses) at ABC. They pushed for the end of the SD-6 storyline because they thought it was too hard for people to understand, not realizing that the drama came from Sydney working for Sloane. Then after season 3 they said, "Oops, you were right. Get them back working together." even though the premise was ridiculous. Yes, I'm still bitter about it. The SD-6 storyline still had plenty of stories left to be told.

MI 1 vs. MI 2 vs. MI 3

    by supernatural_canary

I’m prepared for the fact that I’ll probably get serious flamed for this, but I think the worst movie in the MI franchise by a wide margin is the first one. It was a poorly directed, structurally convoluted piece of crap. I never watched the show, and I know that one of the things people liked about the first one was the cooperation of the MI team. I’m not particularly bothered by the “lone wolf” scenario.

The main thing I like about the second one is the sense of a battle of the titans, especially with the final fight scene on the beach. There’s lots of stuff to complain about, for sure, but at least MI 2 was a straight-forward action movie with a streamlined story and rousing climax (I understand the arguments against this opinion, and don’t personally agree with them).

MI 3 was definitely the best in the series, mostly because of the brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Each director (yes Asimov, sorry but even Abrams) brought something good to the series. One thing though, I really want to see a full MI team back in the mix, it's the one thing this series has been missing, although it seemed to be getting back to that in III but not fully.Oh, if this turns into another Star Trek bashing thread I am seriously going to decapitate someone and use their head as a fucking soccer ball.

Only thing good i can find in the MI3 bulshit piece of shit of movie that is, was they cast Philip Seymore Hoffman as the villain. And he's a great villain not because of anything that Orci, his siemese brother and Abrams did, but because Hoffman is pure awesomeness and he turned a turrd of a chareter into cinematic gold, through his sheer talent alone. that's the only good thing i have to say about that fucking shit of a movie.Otherwise, what's the good thing that abrams brough to the franchise? Tha the turned it into an unholy hybrid of a bad Alias episode mixed with an homevideo of Tom cruise's blissful home life with his new wife? Fuck that shit, man!

    by mapman

I'm no fan of JJA. The only thing I like that he was involved with is Lost and thankfully he isn't very involved at all except for directing the pilot.I saw MI:3 in the theatre and all I seem to remember was that the action shots were dark and hard to follow and the movie itself was quite forgetable.I loved MI:1 and although MI:2 had it's problems it was still watchable and worth repeat viewings. The franchise has potential but they need to go back to the team aspect like in the first mission in MI:1. Less Cruise and more team. Also, I wish they would go back to their original idea with a new director and vision for each movie. Wasn't Oliver Stone attached to direct at some point? Fincher or Soderbergh would be great too. No TV directors though.

Yes, yes, YES! I can't agree with this more. RONIN is a kick-ass action film.

While I haven't minded the one-man-army thing, and could care less about what the TV show was like, presenting the argument this way makes complete sense.

Of course, that would result in the first MI movie with a finely-honed script and non-flashy action, but I can live with excellent dialog and compelling character interactions.

The first one was ok, but they decided to make the one known character from the TV series into the bad guy and kill him off (what other franchise would allow that to happen?). The other two were utterly forgettable vehicles for Cruise. End it, now.

C'mon, man. Just because you didn't like a film doesn't mean that everyone who does must be an idiot or have a lack of taste. I like some films and books that others might not like. I thought STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was highly underrated (although I think that STAR TREK II is the best of the series). However, I don't spit on the opinions of those who do not like STAR TREK. After all, it is merely a persuasion. If you aren't careful, you will begin to sound like some of the far-left wingnuts who like to vilify, demonize and ridicule anyone who disagrees with their agenda. That said: I agree with many of your opinions. However, I thought that MI:3 was a very good film.

    MI: 3 was nice

    by doublearon

I really enjoyed it. Like someone stated above, it was the closest thing to Alias -- in it's prime --but on the big screen.

Problem with box office was 90% the self-induced downward spiral of public opinion towards Tom Cruise that he's still trying to recover from.

There's also the disappointment that while the team stuff was MUCH better than the previous movies, it didn't quite go all the way with it. It was still a super loner agent movie.

These writers don't bode well for the new one, BUT Abrams tends to nail the solid big ideas and we don't know who is directing yet. There's some hope left.

    by bizarrojerry

I would like to see Cruise retire, give us a new star, but actually make it a big ensemble piece like the TV series. I think every flick in this series comes up with a reason to split up the team and have Tommy on his own. I think part of the issue is this is Cruise's way on getting to star in a James Bond movie.

You referred to their "creativity" as "post-modern".....now the two will thinq they're all hipsterish (or more so), and jj will be inspired to make another cameo in a faux musiq video with will ferrell or 2010's equivalent of him. Seriously everybody, I don't really have strong feelings positive or negative towards jj's fliqs, but star treq's lensflares in every other scene (ok maybe scratch out other) were bordering on pokemon seizure levels. And to see in the bts features jj playing with that flashlight to add all those lensflares would have him arrested even after the faqt if star treq hadn't made $.

I don't know if Cruise is a "pretty damn good actor" or not. I know that he's decent enough. My problem is that he just doesn't interest me as an actor. Viggo Mortenson, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Ed Harris, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, even Kevin Costner, shit - even Harrison Ford if he could figure out how to be a good actor again - those guys interest me. Cruise just... doesn't. Never has. I liked him most in Collateral when he was playing somebody that wasn't at all "Cruise-like".

Avatar is a well made film by a director who understands 'cinema'. Abrams is a TV director who doesn't have a fucking clue about shot composition or editing. Just shake a camera about and edit it so fast that no one notices nothing cuts together. That's not film-making.

Maybe you haven't read any of my past posts here at AICN. I'm anti-new Trek (but for different reasons than most) and pro-Avatar. My point is that the "but it's popular" argument doesn't hold water anymore. Avatar is clearly popular yet there is still a very vocal (and very large) group of people who hate it. So in that context I think it's time for some of the people who keep professing how impossible it is for anyone other than Asimov to dislike the last Trek film to get a clue. A lot of people really, REALLY hated that movie.

    MI2 is hilarious

    by morgenes

One to sit and watch with a bunch of mates while on the piss. You've got all the stupid slo-mos, Tom Cruise flipping around mid-air, and Dougray Scott trying to put menace into everything he says: "I...need...to...go...to...the...loo", fucking funny shit.
MI1 and MI3 were both good, especially 3 - although they still keep following Cruise's character around, he at least is working with his team most of the time. And I like the Rabbit's Foot thing - like Ronin and Pulp Fiction, everyone keeps referring to what's in the case, but you never know exactly what it is because it just doesn't matter.
And for all you froward nerds - I enjoyed Star Trek and Avatar equally. Ok, I might have enjoyed Avatar a little more because of the 3D. It's a technical marvel with a very predictable story and some questionable acting (well, that just describes every James Cameron movie!) - but I'd like to see how I feel after I watch it on blu-ray, to see if the 3D was just a gimmick. I've seen Star Trek a few times now - it's still a fun romp, although the holes in the story become more apparent over time. At least it was a bit unpredictable on first viewing, mainly because they seemed to be making it up as they went along!
Anyway, bring on MI4! At least Cruise still doesn't look too old, unlike Brucey boy or old 'Arry!
