Chiklis Signed To ABC Superhero Pilot NO ORDINARY FAMILY!!

Published at:  Feb 10, 2010 1:41:44 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

I’m old enough to remember how people said Michael Chiklis would be dead in Hollywood for agreeing to play John Belushi in the horrible film version of “Wired.” Well, cut to 21 years later and the star of “The Commish,” “Daddio” and “The Shield” is still plugging away.

The “Fantastic Four” star will now play the superpowered father of a superpowered clan in the pilot for ABC’s “No Ordinary Family,”

The proposed series’ premise sounds a lot like “The Incredibles,” which of course sounded a lot like “Fantastic Four.”

Before you get too excited, note "No Ordinary" was created by two veterans of numerous ABC dramedies: Greg Berlanti (“Dirty Sexy Money,” “Eli Stone,” “Brothers & Sisters”) and Jon Feldman (“Big Shots,” “Dirty Sexy Money”).

ABC tried combining its well-worn dramedy formula with sci-fi last summer, resulting in the reviled "Defying Gravity."

Berlanti was also once going to write and direct Warner’s “Green Lantern” superhero movie before Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) replaced Berlanti in the directors chair and ordered a rewrite by Michael Goldenberg (“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”).

This has fail all over it. Chiklis is too good for some weak "dramedy" on ABC. He needs another gritty series...

it's 'The Incredibles' then. Sounds like drek. Chiklis is better than this.

He goes from The Shield to This?

    by watch_the_birdie

Granted, I'm not a fan of The Shield, the fact that he's doing a show about superpowers totally reminds me of Fantastic Four and The Incredibles. You even mentioned it, Herc. But if this show is better than Heroes, it has my blessing.

I for one am pretty psyched by this!

    by starhawke

First off, Defying Gravity was NOT a dramedy. Considering the subject matter and the interpersonal relationships, there wasn't a lot of the funny going on. But it was a fairly well executed show of which I'd like to have seen the end, if not had it go on a bit longer. Yeah, kind of a soap, but it wasn't a BAD soap!
Second, Dirty Sexy Money actually WAS something of a dramedy, but it was also a GREAT soap! It got completely screwed by the fucking writers strike, but damn, that was a whole lot of fun, and I will be forever grateful to that show for introducing me to the talents of the drop-dead-gorgeous Natalie Zea! So add two of the creators of DSM to the fantastic Michael Chikilis and it sounds like a great foundation for a genre show! Not that I expect ABC to stand behind it or nothin' (they hardly stood up for DSM, and FlashForward and V are virtually dead already), but much as with Fox and their annual set-up-and-knock-down of genre efforts (with Fringe being a wonderful rare exception, and props for giving Dollhouse a second chance, albeit in the same death slot that nearly claimed it in season one), I'm glad that ABC is at least greenlighting one or more genre shows a year. Something's gotta stick eventually, right?

"... with sci-fi last summer, resulting in the reviled "Defying Gravity." "They've done it before, a little show you may have heard of called "Lost". I also seem to remember another show, more heavy on the comedy than the drama, that had something of a sci-fi/fantasy twist - "Pushing Daisies".

It took over the timeslot for Freaks And Geeks and got better ratings. I'm sure Coughlins Laws will defend NBC on this too.

I wouldn't mind if they re-picked Defying Gravity

    by kobain

That show was tits. Yeah, it was a little soapy, but soapy-good. And it actually became VERY interesting once they got into Pod #4 and found out what was in there... and the episode with the retrieval of the artifact in Venus... gut-wrenching!

on HBO or Showtime, no holds barred. After the first 24 hours of combat, bloodied & tired, the two combatants rise for another round and out of the dark shadows steps the one force on earth that strikes fear in the hearts of such men. Chuck Norris.
