ScoreKeeper Wants You to Have a BLACK SUNDAY!

Published at:  Feb 06, 2010 7:32:14 PM CST

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here scrambling out of the pocket and going deep on a post route to announce my latest super soundtrack CD giveaway. Sunday is Super Bowl XLIV and wether you’re rooting for the Colts (yes) or the Saints (no) one thing is for sure...we’re all rooting for John Williams.

Did you know that not all of John Williams’ scores have been released on CD? Gasp! Yes, I know. I’m currently drafting a petition for Congress to pass a bill remedying this unfortunate circumstance. However, in the meantime, soundtrack labels like Film Score Monthly are doing their damnedest to solve this worldwide problem themselves.

Their latest contribution to the John Williams discography is the never-before-released-on-CD mega-score for Paramount Pictures’ classic sports-hijacking/terrorism flick, BLACK SUNDAY (1977) starring the indefatigable Robert Shaw.

Here’s a little trivia question I doubt any of you mere mortals will be able to answer...name the other two scores composed by John Williams in 1977. Yeah, I thought it would be too tough for you. I know the answer, but I’m not telling...

Film Score Monthly just announced last month that they’re releasing Williams’ complete score (including “Fight Song #2”!!!!) on CD and they’ve given me five copies to give away to worthy Ain’t It Cool readers.

So you think you’d rather listen to Williams’ scoring the Goodyear blimp crashing into the stadium on Super Bowl Sunday instead of watching Peyton Manning obliterate the 26th ranked passing defense in the NFL on Super Bowl Sunday?

Well, here’s what you have to do...

Email me at scorekeeper@aintitcool.com using the subject: KEEP MY SUNDAY BLACK! and include your full name, mailing address, a valid email address, your favorite sports-themed score, and your favorite John Williams score. Then write a few sentences why you would like a copy of the score for BLACK SUNDAY on CD.

I’m going to do this giveaway a little different this time around. In the past it’s always been random. I get a ton of entries and then I randomly select the winners. I always get heartfelt emails about how much person “X” loves score “Y” and I find myself just wishing I could flat out give it to them instead of leaving it up to chance.

Well, this time, I just want to pick. You tell me why you want this CD and if you say the right thing, I’ll give it to you. I won’t do this very often but hey, it’s Super Bowl Sunday and I’m an American which means I can do whatever I want! Where’s that bucket of hot wings?

Write a haiku, convince me John Williams is your god, tell me how awesome I am...I don’t know what you can or should say but say something.

The deadline will be Wednesday, February 10th, at 11:59PM EST. Only one entry per person please. International entries will be accepted. Duplicates will be discarded.

I will collect and read all the entries. Five of the most appealing entries will result in the entrant receiving one copy of BLACK SUNDAY on CD courtesy of Film Score Monthly and Screen Archives Entertainment.

For more information including audio samples and order placement please visit Screen Archives Entertainment.

I bought a used copy of the movie (fuck you, "very long wait" on Netflix...) when I heard that Williams' score was getting released on CD, and it's the most "Goldsmith-esque" thing he's ever written, full of low-end piano ostinatos and chopping string rythms. Great score for a so-so movie (Bruce Dern is horrible, as are the sub-par blimp effects in the finale).

I already received my copy of this, and what Scorekeeper doesn't say is that the mastering on this album is SUPERB! The clarity is stunning ... apart from some minimal tape hiss, it might have been recorded yesterday. This is NOT one to miss!

...Spielberg and Lucas owe their careers to John Williams.

In terms of the blockbuster age...20th Century Fox and Universal...as well as Lucasfilm and Spielberg owe their fortunes to John Williams.

Even Richard Donner admitted how brilliant John Williams was in composing the score for "SUPERMAN".

Just as John Barry set the stage for James Bond, John Williams made it all possible for Lucas and Spielberg.

And he is not just my God... he IS God! I wish he'd do even more music for the blockbusters of today. For me, growing up in the 70's & 80's, he made going to the movies such a thrill ride. Today's films' scores sadly pale in comparison.

    by eustisclay

...Hmm could it have been a couple of scifi flicks? Anyway, can't believe people are dissing Dern. He's one of those actors that can go over the top believably. He did this and coming home, both where he is scarily phsychotic, yet kinda underplayed between them in the Driver. And he was great as Longhair in The Cowboys. Oh, and ScaryWaitress, agree with your Morricone choices but would have to add Once Upon a time in the West.

Just for the record, my favorite Williams score is a toss-up between TEMPLE OF DOOM and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK...probably ESB if you twist my arm. Best sports score IMO: Randy Newman, THE NATURAL. People often crap on Newman for being too cutesy and one-note, but THE NATURAL hit it out of the park (pun intended.) Goosebumps. Every time.

I saw the VHS cover of this movie in video store once and looked at the back to see a picture of a woman in a shower covering her boobs, needless to say this intrigued me more than any Goodyear blimp terrorist attack, I've been meaning to rent this movie from Netflix just to see if that scene's in the movie

    by the_crimson_king

yes there are many other great film composers out there, but more my money John Williams is second to none, it's an undisputed fact that movies like Star Wars, Jaws and Raiders of The Lost Ark would've been nowhere near as good without Williams brilliant music

    by the_crimson_king

is mostly boring and forgettable, I think it's because film makers stray away from themes, I can't imagine why, the last movies that I saw that had music that was just as memorable as Williams best was Howard Shore's score for the Lord of The Rings movies
