* “Parks and Recreation,” with its first episode to air since NBC greenlit its third season, hit a series high. All NBC sitcoms were up from their last new episodes. (I’m telling you, NBC: “Parks” will grow into an “Office”-size franchise if you move it to 9:30.)
* The NBC sitcoms’ strong performance did not help the final Thursday “Leno,” which hit a new all-time Thursday low. As you’re deciding whether or not to watch NBC’s curling coverage, remember that NBC Sports chief Dick Ebersol called Conan O’Brien “gutless.”
* “Bones” remained in first place at 8 p.m. and continues to pull better 18-49 scores than “CSI” -- something I think few would have predicted during the first half of the season. “Bones” is however a good bet to fall to second when “Survivor” returns next week.
* “Fringe” fell from first place to fourth as “Grey’s,” “CSI” and “Office” all returned with new episodes, but the sci-fi FBI series' winter finale still hit a respectable 2.6 in that impossible timeslot.
* “Grey’s Anatomy” is a big tire with a slow leak. It won the night while hitting another all-time low.
* “Mentalist” tied “Private Practice” in 18-45 at 10 p.m. (though “Mentalist,” as usual, crushed “Practice” in total viewership).
* The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” helped drive ABC’s “Deep End” to 1.3 and fifth place. “Deep” is doing worse than “FlashForward” in that slot, which is saying something.
* “Vampire” did not however help “Supernatural,” which hit a new season (all-time?) low as its lead-in continues to rise.

so say so dammit
-
I don't think Herc watches it (or likes it), thus the relentless trumpeting of Parks, instead.
Pity, as I find it far more watchable than P&R, even with its admittedly improved second season. -
and like it.
And I think "30 Rock" is a better match for it than "Parks." -
Especially Parks. imo, its been by far the most consistently hilarious of those four sitcoms each week. I think Herc is right though and The schedule should probably be 30 Rock, Community, Office, Parks. Andy on Parks is one of the funniest characters I've seen on tv. Brilliant.
-
"I did eat all the macaroni. It's messed up that he knows." "And that can be your toast at her shotgun wedding to Starburns." "Jeff: Let's not confine ourselves to your wheelhouse - this problem won't respond to tap dancing or casual revelations that you spent time in New York. Britta: Okay, if you're going to get all Upper East Side about this, I think we're done." The comic acting and writing on this show are fast approaching the glory days of MTM.
-
LOVE that new Harry animation.
-
I don't really care how much Herc hates Supernatural nor how much he loves gloating when a show that he doesn't like doesn't get as good of ratings as one would expect. The whole criticism behind Supernatural is that it is a teeny bopper 90210 show with pretty boys and monsters. Well, judging from the fact that its lead in, Vampire Diaries, IS a teeny bopper 90210 show with pretty boys and monsters and that the demographic doesn't carry over to Supernatural should tell you something. When watching this week's episode of Supernatural, I was thinking to myself just how great it was, especially with Lost back on for comparison's sake. Lost is great, but for long-term story arc & planning, nothing can beat Supernatural. As far as kick-ass television that takes what its TV predecessors, Buffy & Angel, did, learns from them, and surpasses them, nothing can beat Supernatural. It's really a shame that as a geek community we can't rally around a show that sticks its neck out week after week, season after season, and delivers. I would think a site like 'Ain't It Cool' would actually be supportive of good art but it appears that it's become the target of a personal vendetta. How unfortunate.
-
I agree whole-heartedly with everything you just said.
-
I ditto the two guys above me.
-
Unless Joss Whedon starts working on Supernatural, Herc will continue to be a hater, regardless of how great the show actually is. I would love to find out that he was secretly working on the show all along, just to see the reaction here. It would immediately become the best show of the decade.
-
30 Rock and The Office are fucking anti-comedy however. Painful and embarassing to watch.
-
almost every line in last nights episode was funny.
-
... with some of the best writing out there. It's a shame that at first glance it looks like junk; while real junk like crummy vampires gets ratings. My woman tried to argue that the Twilight vampires would kill Sam and Dean if they ever crossed paths. I humored her for a little bit before telling her to shut it.
-
has got to be one of the dumbest things I've read on talkbacks in a while. If you don't like it, fine... but for a lot of us, it's pretty damn funny.

I need to fess up. I'm the reason Supernatural is slipping.
by shermdawg
I've been taping it this season. Sorry, my bad.
-
I just hope they finish it this season. It will be one of the most epic storylines on TV. If they strech it out or make an "after the Apocalypse was averted" season, I'll be disappointed. My favorite thing about SN is the dickish smite-happy bloodthirsty take on angels.
-
if it was about the Winchester Sisters, Samantha and Diana. And had hunky season long "will they, won't they?" love interests. And talk like they have some weird pop-culture reference form of Tourettes.
-
not if you've ever REALLY watched it. The show started of very 'Monster of the week' but quickly proved more than the sum of its parts by half way through the first season! I've watched some great TV over the last few years with The Wire, Firefly, E.R, Battlestar Galactica and I've seen some great shows with huge potential come to premature ends like Journeyman, Threshold and Moonlight. There's been shows like LOST & HEROES that simply made up crap as they went along and subsequently wasted their best characters along the path as a trade of to milking the celebrity status of their popular actors. Supernatural has been consitently great, season after season without fail. It's been by far the show I looked forward to watching the most even if it wasn't the best written; quite simply it is the most entertaining on all fronts, it never fails to deliver and I'm glad not everyone watches it otherwise it would have gotten too popular and naturally become ruined by the network. When it comes to its natural end this season then people will discover how great it really was in the home video aftermath. Herc, some people have to dig deep to find diamonds and rubies, others simply are lucky enough to discover them and enjoy the beauty of them while they still sparkle. Supernatural is a true modern day TV Gem!
-
For sticking it to Conan, right now.

Community and parks have more laughs overall then Office and 30R
by jettl1993
funny that NBC promtoed office and 30 rock more then community and parks, the later two are consistantly more funy then the big 2 (although office and 30 rock still are funny they seem to have mellowd in their later seasons). DJ Bromba on Parks was the funniest thing of the night, especially Andy having a big smile on his face and says "she likes me"
-
.....gives it credibility. in fact, that should be the new tag line for the show: "supernatural, watched by less mouth breathing, knuckle-dragging, retarted, 'tweener morons than you think"
-
The acting and writing are awesome, although they had a couple of bad episodes after Christmas. Something about Parks prevents me from fully engaging with it, but it's still amusing. I haven't fully given up on The Office--last week's was much improved. I think the reason 30 Rock sucks is because there has been absolutely no character development the entire time it has been on the air--the characters are exactly the same people they were 3 years ago and because of that, what was once funny has now gotten repetitive.
-
I know, I know, I must be seduced by Ian Somerhalder's sexy evil eyes or something (he's better as a tom cruise-ish vampire than he's ever been in anything else), but the show has kept my interest where stuff like Flashforward has not. No, I do not have HBO, I do not get to watch True Blood. It's also no Buffy or Angel, but again, it's keeping my interest and I didn't expect that after laughing at the pilot. I think it sucks that they'd have me believe Jasmine Guy is a grandmother though. She couldn't just be an Aunt or something?
-
I am liking VD as well. Love that Nina Dobrev, what a little slim hottie. Gorgeous..

DAMN YOU ALL

We got the bluray from bestbuy with the bestbuy exqlusive lenticular cover since it was 1/2 off, but I heard target has on the dvd version of the 4th year an exclusive disc from when the cast/crew appeared at a comicon. Can't find any decent reviews of that disc online, anyone have any opinions on it?

Sure it's had a couple blah episodes, but what sitcom hasn't in it's first season?
Even though Parks has approved I'm getting bored with the talking to the camera thing. There are only so many times the stare at the camera reaction shot can work and I think 5 seasons of The Office and 2 of P&R is that number. -
why he doesn't like Supernatural?...or did I miss that somewhere?
-
...into the ground. It's dead and buried...and very pretentious.
-
Chin bastard will be terrible for all eternity.
-
What's not to like about that?
-
Too bad for the low ratings. Really like the mythology episodes.
-
I guess the majority who watch it once see no value in ever watching it again. How well do the DVDs do?I wonder if some people aren't watching Leno because they think the shows are repeats. Everything in the news about his show getting cancelled, and him going back to the Tonight Show, might have made some think he's already finished with The Jay Leno Show.Always nice to see some Supernatural love.
-
It's essentially a laugh track for sitcoms without a laugh track. Any time there's a joke, cutting to someone (Jim in The Office) with a goofy look on their face to sell the fact that a joke was just told is lazy. I hate laugh tracks, but at this point the stare-into-the-camera is becoming more annoying. By the way, Community and 30 Rock are a riot. 2 funniest shows on tv in my opinion.
-
Community has yet to create any empathy for the characters. Love the comedy the show produces but I could care less if Jeff and Britta get together or what happens to the characters. And I'm calling BS on anybody that thinks they do.
-
"It's really a shame that as a geek community we can't rally around a show that sticks its neck out week after week..." And I'm pretty sure there are geeks out there that want everybody to rally behind Power Rangers b/c of its "art."
-
or is it only when they stare and look into the camera to acknowledge they're surrounded by idiots does it become a problem? So what i'm getting at is I need a better explanation of why people don't' like Parks and The Office besides the lies i'm being peddled.

Supernatural and Lost = two best genre shows on network tv
by turketron_2
It's true.

Why does a porno with that title not exist yet?
-
It does.
-
Is why I come here.
-
- is so cool that every time he goes outside, another ice age hits.
-
I want "Team Free Will" shirt
-
Even though it hit a season low (can't understand why), I believe "Supernatural", "Smallville" & "Vampire Diaries" are still the highest-rated shows on The CW. Frankly, I don't get the big deal over "Vampire Diaries". I know that vampires are all the rage right now, but the show is pretty lame. The lead actress couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag and though the storylines have improved, the way they're played out pales in comparison to much more intelligent genre shows like "Supernatural", "Angel" and "Buffy". It's still nothing more than a guilty pleasure.
-
Best line of the season. Got chills.
-
I think I'll debate you for dozens of posts trying to convince you, and finally giving up, calling you names, then go cry and masturbate looking at a half naked Jensen Ackles through my tears. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?
-
I agree - it makes me feel good and often makes me orgasm
-
Besides shotguns, Supernatural's creator actually knew where the story was going, and if this season is indeed the end, will almost certainly end on a much more satisfying note.

natecore I think Kief_Ledger nailed what i was trying to say
by mel_gibsons_nazi_dad
It's lazy. When in doubt have Michael do something stupid and go to Jim for silent stare at the camera reaction. Dwight blah blah beets and go to Jim for silent stare at the camera reaction.
It's played out and lazy at this point, do something new. -
This week's ep. was top 5 ever easily. Archangel Michael taking over John's body to save his family. The look on Sam's face when he finally sees his mother was fantastic. This show has continuity coming out the ass. And the angel figurine in Dean's nursery at the end. Castiel not knowing Dean's Back to the Future reference hilarious.
-
I am LOVING THE SHIT out of Supernatural! I never gave the show a chance but kept seeing people on aintitcool give it props ... so I figured, what the hell? Two weeks later, I am on season 4 and love every episode! So. Good.
-
All the years of Jim (and Pam) looking at the camera behind Dwight and Michael's back, and talking shit about the staff behind their backs...it didn't make them very endearing. Quite the opposite. I ended up liking Dwight more than them.
-
I'd like to add that Supernatural = X-Files + shotguns + classic rock + muscle cars.
Best line other than, "You can't fight City Hall" from this week:
"Why do angels want to kill me?"
"Because they're dicks." -
Loved that line. Michael is freakin' scary! Love the fact that because the mythology is so straight-forward (ie, not convoluted) the writers can take threads going back to the first season and weave them seamlessly into the current one and nothing feels tacked on. Not like the X-Files where to this day I still don't know what the connection was between the bees and the black oil.
-
was the fact that I had dismissed the show based on pretty much my preconceptions of it. It was only the persistant talkbackers who got me to try it. And by god, I'm glad they did.
It's easily one of the best shows on the air at the moment. -
Ricky Gervais said of his BBC OFFICE character, "If you're not laughing AT David Brent, it's because you ARE David Brent." The same thing clearly goes for Michael and Dwight.
And that's all I need to say about that... -
Start watching this show people, it's a good show. Watch a few episodes and you'll see it's not "stupid".
-
You have one convert!
-
That's my only complaint. They have the opportunity to make a non stop ass kicking season. But fail to use Satan or abandon pointless episodes like the Paris Hilton one and several others this season.
Even last weeks episode served little purpose until the very end. -
Is this a new show? When did it start?
-
You have a character that is actually named Dean Winchester. He drives a '67 Impala and kills monsters with a shotgun, a knife from Hell (literally), and an antique gun made by Samuel Colt, who apparently liked to kick demon ass too. He also spent 40 years in hell despite the fact that he is only 31. And even though the Apocalypse has begun, he still finds the time to knock back a few while hitting on every girl he sees. Oh, and that Colt? He actually had the balls to shoot the Devil in the face with it.
Taking all of that into account.... how the hell is this not the biggest show in TV? The mind boggles. -
jim and pam are morons. I used to love them. Now I spend my time hoping to see more Michael/Toby interaction. Now THATS funny shit.
-
works for the office more because it is supposedly a documentary filming in an office, and for Jim in particular as he was trying to show to the world that he realized his life was a joke and he couldn't do anything about it. It feels much more artificial when it happens on shows like Parks or Modern Family, where they don't even seem to try and make the show about a documentary. It is just like these people have camera crews following them around for no reason. Maybe I've missed a hint on these other shows, but what makes sense on the Office doesn't on other shows. I do wish the Office would move forward and have their documentary start to air in their world as it did at the end of the UK series.
-
I think I've been watching it pretty much since the beginning. I caught it after watching an episode of Smallville (I think) and it was far better than Smallville. I think back then drew me in was the 80's metal soundtrack they were using in the first season (before they cut down on the music cues due to budget), but over the years the story has continued to grow and keep interesting. I don't watch smallville anymore, but Supernatural is a must watch. The CW doesn't seem as chop happy as the major networks. I'm not sure whether or not I'd want to see a 6th season, as everything I read indicates it was written to be a 5 season series (so if the 6th season were some kind of filler.. afterthought it might not be as good).
But since CW doesn't seem to need the same ratings NBC/FOX/CBS/ABC needs to turn a profit, I could see them offering a litle money to keep it on the air. -
very, very refreshing to come to this site and see a lot of love for supernatural.
It really pisses me off how little attention this wonderful show gets. Ever more so, it pisses me completely off how much Herc seems to dislike the show without even watching an entire season.
Seriously, fucking retard. -
I think if someone doesn't like something, they should at least say why they don't like it, and if you run a damn website, you should cater to YOUR interests, AS WELL AS YOUR READERS!!! just a thought herc. just a thought. no supernatural talkbacks, no dexter talkbacks (written by you), no castle talkbacks.
-
I laugh at Michael and Dwight's characters...but I also like them...but I hate Jim and Pam. I didn't expect that, because in the first season Michael comes off as an ignorant jackass and Dwight as a sociopathic freak...but the one thing they are not...are snobs. Despite their obvious flaws which make others talk shit about them...they both possess noble traits...like Dwight's loyalty to Michael...and Michael's childlike innocence and optimism. Michael and Dwight are both funny and somewhat endearing despite their outwardly obnoxious qualities....but Jim and Pam are white bread dullards who think they are better than everyone else. I hate them both with a passion...especially Pam.
-
I think in their case, the conceit is that the families are taking part in a documentary by a Dutch film crew. Since the documentary will be released only in the Netherlands, it's supposed to explain why the family don't mind THAT level of intrusion.
But honestly, like the Office, it never features into the plot. In fact, it's even less relevant to the plot than the Office (where you sometimes saw people take their mikes off).
At this stage, it's just a narrative device. But I don't think it's distracting. -
Yeah, that's right..Robert Singer. The executive producer of Supernatural is the same motherfucker that worked on Dark Shadows and the freakin' Night Stalker. The Night Stalker? Ever heard of it? 1970's goddamn horror excellence. The man is a living/ working legend so I think I'll watch anything he's involved with over the opinions of some candy assed Aintitcool kids that pretend they know tv horror.
-
This is a guy who cut his teeth working for the legendary Dan Curtis. Even in his later years, Curtis was far bigger and commanded more respect than Joss Whedon (and don't get me wrong, I like his work) EVER did. At his height, Curtis (with assists from Singer) brought in seventy million viewers at a time, and damn near every genre show today is influenced by them in some manner. As for SUPERNATURAL, since mid-Season 2, it's consistently been on the level of the best of BUFFY and ANGEL and has even surpassed them on more than one occasion. Indeed, ANGEL'S own Ben Edlund has done much more intriguing, far wittier work than he ever accomplished under Whedon.
-
for everyone.
-
Loved the UK Office, watched a couple US Office seasons, but they just got old for the exact reasons listed above.
Supernatural is great, I got the first disc from Netflix on a lark. Before the disc was finished, I had ordered all 3 available seasons from Amazon, I was that blown away.
Burn Notice is also amazing, give it a chance, you'll be hooked. -
I just caught on to this show recently via DVD, thanks to the praise a few Talkbackers. I'm about to start Season 3 actually. I don't understand why there is "hate" from AICN for this show, if there is? I notice there's never a TB for it? Sure there's nothing on the surface that's appealing right away if you are just looking at the advertisements and commercials, which is why I wrote it off back in 2005 as another pretty boy/teen oriented lame genre bullshit, but my god was I wrong. I'm guessing Herc has a chip on his shoulder because Supernatural has a lot of Buffy/Angel vibe going on? Maybe it's because if his man Joss Whedon can't make it on TV, then nobody should, especially if they are playing on his field. Sorry, dude, I love Buffy/Angel as much as the next guy, but Buffy was over when she "died" (even my wife admits that and she's as hardcore a Whedonphile as it comes). I do think Angel should have had 1 more Season, but maybe without the pressure of suddenly finding out you are canceled, the writers wouldn't have made a rip-roaring last few episodes and it would have just faded away. But it also has a little of The X-Files and a nod to bad ass 70's TV shows that featured a car). These shows can't go on forever, especially if you are featuring vampires who are supposed to look unaged and are starting to pack on the pounds and age marks (although the Spike guy was pulling it off pretty well). Anyway, Supernatural is also great because there is little to no humor going on (although when there is, it's laugh outloud funny) and almost every episode is gut wrenching. The show's mythology is well thought out, the creature designs are well made. I'm hard pressed to remember a TV series that's this consistent? I'm rambling now and nobody's going to read this anyway. Just check the show out, give it at least a go for one season.

I think Supernatural drops off so much because it's now against Fringe. All us Sci-Fi geeks have to then choose (those who can't DVR) which to watch at a time slot that is already painful to be in.

every morning on TNT after repeats of Charmed. I get off work just in time to watch it before going to sleep, and I gotta say, I'm pretty hooked. I wouldn't have watched if it hadn't been for TB praise, I'm pretty well hooked now.

...promoting Late Show with David Letterman!!! What a fucking sell-out!!! Give Leno a check, and he'll do a commercial promoting genocide....he's a company man.

I got into Supernatural about a year ago, thanks to a friend and much love from fans on the AICN talkbacks. And after slogging through that awful 1/2 of S1, I'm glad I did. Supernatural has to be one of the most consistently entertaining geek shows out there.
I mean, it manages to tell a deep, serious, tragic mythology while being peppered with a healthy dose of awesome cultural references, solid humor, decent action, all set to a classic rock soundtrack. I don't see how any self-styled geek could turn down Supernatural. It's that good.
. . .which isn't to say that the show is perfect. It tends to get bogged down whenever it deviates from the mythology with monster of the week episodes, but even those usually have great character moments. -
Great writing great characters

I've loved Supernatural since the beginning, and even I didn't know that. I'll admit I haven't seen a bunch of NS eps, but the ones I've seen I've enjoyed. Herc is out of his (or her) mind

Hannigan reunited with Boreanaz from Buffy, Segel reunited with Daley from Freaks & Geeks! I wanted something similar thing from a HIMYM/Kitchen Confidential crossover, but that wasn't meant to be...

Agents Campbell and Raimi. LOL

It's a fun show!
-
It could be called "How I Boned your Mother".

Glad to see other talkbackers recognizing how good this show is. I won't mind if they keep it around for another season, as long as it's a strong one. Would hate to lose both Lost and Supernatural in the same year.
-
I thought the show got canceled? Didn't AICN run an article last year on how it wrapped up? Maybe I'm just going senile.
-
AICN run a story on supernatural that doesn't involve its ratings? that i can not believe at all. Yes, the show is still going strong; you should check it out. My fiance doesn't particularly like the angel storyline (she's an atheist), but it's awesome nonetheless. I personally love their take on angels and lucifer. If Herc would get his head out of his ass, he would see some great television, and some absolutely wonderful use of great character actors from Deadwood.

I've always seen it, as V'Sheal said, as a "a narrative device" - they're not talking to the camera but to us, the audience. Like in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, they're breaking the Fourth Wall with asides to deliver exposition or express a thought that isn't something one would generally say out-loud. Kind of like thought bubbles in comics.

was locked for some reason) for Supernatural's Season Finale. Maybe you misread it as it being a Series Finale.
-
Lots of well deserved praise here for the show. Just like Michael Mann would work music into Miami Vice, they do a great job with some classic rock songs.

Talkbackers got me into Supernatural too. Best show on air!

I didn't know anything about Supernatural, since there's never a talkback dedicated to it here. But I saw people mentioning in in all the other talkbacks, so checked it out. Watched every past episode in short order, now I never miss an episode and I look forward to it the most of any show. I even love the random episodes that they just throw in there with the trickster and such, the writers have an amazing sense of humor. Going to be a shame if this dies, as it gets better over time.. Not alot of shows do that.
