Here's The Super Bowl Ad For M. Night's LAST AIRBENDER...

Published at:  Feb 04, 2010 12:26:53 PM CST

Merrick here...

The trailer comes to us via UGO (find it HERE).

I'll not soon forgive any filmmaker who dared to put something as breathtakingly inane as THE HAPPENING on screens, but I'm trying...really trying...to remain open minded about this. I don't find the 'look' of this trailer altogether unappealing.

    by dingbatty

as if Cameron's "Avatar" was the first fiction to use that word. Probably TSR's Avatar Trilogy series of books and modules set in the Forgotten Realms from the late 80's are what put the word into the geek (and later popular) lexicon in the western world, and why they started using the term when the graphical web was attached to the net in the 90's.

End of Season One takes place during Lunar eclipse.
As for the whole racial controversy, look at the actual characters. Is Aang drawn as Tibetan? No, he's drawn as a round-eyed boy.

The operative question is how many Inuits do you know who can act and do martial arts with good enough proficiency?

When we were taught screenwriting, we were taught to keep most aspects of appearance generalized. Why? Because people have to cast the roles, so if you specify every last detail, they're going to have to go looking for every last one. This program had to find actors capable of playing the parts, in additon to satisfying whatever appearance issues. Getting hung up on race on characters whose facial designs were generalized anyways is just more in the way of political correctness run amok

    by dailysportspages

Understanding of the movie seems to go over everyones heads.
Not because they are dumb, but because they put mental blocks in their heads beforehand. When you look at a trailer or a persons past work and already think "this is going to suck"... it most likely will for you. And if it doesnt change your mind right away in the first few scenes, if it challenges you in any way to remove your preconceived notions... you wont accept it. You will just chalk it up to being overly dense and ultimately stupid.

I love the show. I love that it became insanely popular and the makers still decided to end it after three seasons, because the story they were telling was finished. That integrity permeated the series - sure, it was sometimes broad, but the characters showed genuine growth and depth.
Live-action bending looked cool. I will give it a chance because I so love the source material. I also enjoyed The Happening, which I found to be very, very funny and a bit creepy. I also think parts of The Village are amazing - notably, the Bryce Dallas Howard parts. Her turn in that film blew me away. Sure, the film around her was kind of meh, but her performance (and Joaquin Phoenix) saved it for me.

The Last U-Bender is no match for the REAL Avatar

    by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave

2 Billion and counting. What a colossus. And for any morons - the reason Cameron has the legal rights to the name is because he registered it first, way back in the mid-90's before that shitty kids cartoon was even a twinkling in the eye of whoever created it. I find it hilarious that all the anime kiddies who were whining about JC having 'stolen' the name now have to live with the fact that to the vast majority of the world, the title Avatar now refers to one thing and one thing only - and it sure as hell ain't a Nickelodeon cartoon for pre-teens featuring a bald kid with an arrow painted on his fucking head! As for Shyamalan - wasn't this guy once touted as the next Spielberg? Never did see where that comparison came from - Shamalangidingdong got lucky with 2 flicks: the overrated but decent Sixth Sense and the underrated (and should have been a trilogy) Unbreakable. Rest of his output is sub-Twilight Zone garbage.

    by drewlicious

A few years ago when we first got a glimpse of "Matrix Reloaded." There were so many fantastic shots I must have watched the ad ten times. Then of course the actual movie came out and all that hype was squandered. Another one that got me was "Knight's Tale." I don't know why but for some reason I got a kick out of seeing those guys getting plastered. Fun movie, too.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I've caught a few episodes here or there... less then 10 overall, but enough to see that it was good. The one thing I worry about is that the show certainly had charm, and I don't know that I can say that anything Shyamalan has done has really been "charming". He does somber/spooky well, but that wasn't the vibe I got from the cartoon.

    Sample of The Happening dialogue

    by skimn

*gunshot*"Oh no..""No what?""What, no..?""I know what?"Ok I kid, but not by much. The Happening had scene after scene of dialogue that never could of come out of the mouths of actual human beings, let alone movie characters. I remember one "apologist", claiming the Zooey character was actually mentally challenged to explain her loony dialogue/performance. I hope M Night returns strong though. He is talented, but his career trajectory is as if Spielberg followed CE3K with 1941, then Always, then Hook...

I'm in! And Shayamalan is a great director! All his films show that. It was simply the story that not many people liked, in fact I found his stories to be attempts and largely experimental, which despite not working all the time were at least interesting. But then again, I'm the guy who won an AICN contest for an essay trying to make sense of Serial Experiments Lain... If you are confounded by Shyamalan's work, then you definately don't wantto get into that one... though I have not seen Happening or the one about red riding hood in the woods or whatever... Anyway the point is as a fan of the avatar cartoon, that looked awesome!!!

Which is a sentiment I've shared in many a TB on the topic. I avoided it for years. But I think it is one of the best things on TV. It's epic, solid, deep and stands the test of time. is a modern camp classic. I don't understanding how people are so offended by it. It's like being offended by Barbarella. I think it's Shayamalan's parody of himself. Everyone in it has done fantastic work in other films - and everyone in it (with the exception of Leguizamo, who plays it straight) is exceptionally, stunningly, knowingly bad.Plus I genuinely love the score, outside my camp affection for the rest of it.

Shamylan can be good. I am VERY interested to see what happens when he makes a movie that doesn't have a "twist" at the end. Usually I felt like that what makes or breaks his movies. Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were good twists. Village and Happening....not so much...

    Slick little trailer

    by lando griffin

I'm there. I was a casusal fan of the show. It wasn't appointment tv for me but if it was on I'd watch it. It didn't coddle to kids, had great characters and development and always some cool action setpieces (one of my all time favorites was the giant drill attacking the city at the top of that huge wall and Aang just obliterating it) And I know its popular to hate on the Sham but I after giving us Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs I'll forgive anything else. I liked but didn't love The Village part of that was probably me seeing the twist coming from a mile a way. I understood what he was trying to accomplish with Lady in the Water but it ultimately didn't work for me. And ugghh The Happening I wouldn't say it was terrible but it was pretty bad. I've heard the camp classic/wooden acting argument before and if that was what Sham was going for I could see it kind of working but I don't think thats what he was going for. I just think his pretentiousness finally caught up with him. He thought he was untouchable. Hopefully having him adapt from someone elses work will spark some life back into him and humble him because I believe there is still some life left in him creatively.

Big fan of the show, and that trailer had some promise! I especially liked how they designed the air/water/fire/earth elements to look like how they used in the show. by robertbaron

The major studios, through the MPAA, have a title registry. Cameron/Fox registered the title "Avatar" years ago. Long before the Avatar cartoon was even being developed. The studio would have to pay off Fox to use the title Avatar: The Last Airbender as it could easily be construed to be related to Cameron's Avatar.

You are one of the heroes of the Avatar TB Wars, and an asset to AICN... and while I can understand the M. Night hate, and the pre-emptive slapdown of the same anti-Avatar trolls that are going to disingenuously use this movie as a way to further wax their Cameron hate-boners, the Avatar cartoon was actually great, one of the few actually engaging, well-made, thoughtful non-anime cartoons in the past decade at least. And if you continue to slander it in the name of defending Avatar, I will have to break out the harsh language. Nobody wants the harsh language. Think of the children.

    watched it 'for the kids'

    by guy gaduois

started watching the animated series with the nieces and nephews ("you gotta see this, it's so awesome!) and got hooked. They'd be trying to watch tv, the show's on, and they're going 'aww, we saw this one already', and I say 'yeah but Unc hasn't, it's my TV, what?'
The animated series had a distinctly more Eastern Asian vibe to it, so I'm not that hip to the casting for the live action. But the story, especially (spoiler) the redemption of Zuko has a nice arc to it. Great themes of loyalty, grace and redemption. Hope it comes off well, the source material is pretty solid. It's a familiar tale, but they told it quite well in the animated series. Strong conclusion, too.
"Unbreakable" earned a mile of leeway for M. Night Shyamalan for me, 'Lady' and 'Happening' didn't do much to dent the good will I have toward his storytelling. Not every movie can be so fiercely original, flawlessly logical and epically well acted as 'Avatar'. Unless it's 'the Phantom Menace'.

Rock music? All action and no humor? This movie is being marketed in a completely different direction than what made the animated Nick show so popular.

As for "written by"? Screw that. That Nick show ended up being an incredible entertainment experience because it is a well-rounded and, yes, deep story about redemption and the power of nature vs. machines. I really hope that this trailer is just a fraction of what this movie will be. Looks to me that M. Night is screwing up something else that could be incredible.

Mark Wahlberg was ACTING like that on purpose.

    by dailysportspages

Its hard to describe this movie to people.
The best way i can think of is to compare it to Watchmen sort of. Watchmen the book not the movie.

If you get Watchmen then you probably get this movie too.

They are very different of course, not just in the obvious genre style... but similar in how there is a purposeful underlying sarcasm without the wink wink that lets you know its sarcasm. Thats a shitty explanation because its not sarcasm. I cant really think of the right word at the moment.

Its more like... these are things you come to expect in this type of movie, so the director will give you some of what yo uexpect, but in a way that will show you how completely retarded is for you to expect such things. He is showing you how you as a viewer is as conditioned in what to expect as the characters are conditioned to believe what is happening is terrorism or something else.

But that is merely the first level of what Sham is doing here.

People always miss the fact that Zoey's character is fighting her own demons where she is sort of closed off from her emotions. She is a metaphor.
Her acting wooden has nothing to do with a poor performance, she is not a bad actress.
Same with Mark Wahlberg. The dude is no Jack Nicholson... but he has proven he can act decently in the movie he did with Jack, The Departed. And in Boogie Nights.
If you paid attention to all the things that simply dont make any sense in the movie, and instead of deriding them for not making sense start to ask yourself WHY the director would put these nonsensical things in the movie... then maybe you would start to get it.

The "twist" in this movie doesnt actually happen in the movie... if you get what i mean.

The special effects look insanely polished, but that's the norm in big budget Hollywood these days-I would bet money (if I had any) that this movie will definitely be released in 3-D. If Night doesn't shy too far from the origional story concept, I think we might have the biggest Hollywood comeback since Tarantino revived Travolta..... Or the movie will just suck ass due to a poor story. Either way, I will be shelling out the moolah to check this out.

Most trailers - especially TV trailers - don't put the director's name out front unless he's a Spielberg or a Scorcese, a name that helps to sell the movie. I'm amazed that the studio still sees Shyamalan in that way. I would think it would be the opposite - his name actually scares people away after his last few movies.

Let's take The Sixth Sense for a good movie, i didn't like it but the majority seemed to like that one.
After that its one pile of crap worst than the precedent, Unbreakable, embarrassingly bad, the Sam Jackson character... urm.
Signs, oh my god... Mel Gibson gave on of the most laughable performances i can remember...
The Village was a step up, had good moments, a regular movie with yet another plot trying to have a genius twist at the end.
Lady in the Water and The Happening are two of the worst movies i've seen in a long time, right down there with utter $hit like Pearl Harbor or Armageddon...

The trailer got me to rewatch the series finale, and my girlfriend who hadn't watched any of the show before totally got sucked in. It's hilarious. Let's just hope that Mr. Shyamalan's writing doesnt screw up the characterization, because if you nail that then it would be hard to fail. And he better make it funny, cause this show is a riot!

    by henry fool

I had a dream that I saw this movie in the theater and it was a musical. The little bald kid has all these musical numbers and it was very abstract. Weird dream.

I wonder how many women M. Night Shyamalan has had anal sex with? Or not at all? Whenever someone is as famous and pretentious as he is I always wonder how many chicks have let him stick it in the pooper. It really is too bad that sex doesn't feel as good when you use condoms.

    by mattmanreturns

Because he could be so much more. Unbreakable and Sixth Sense proved that. I want him to make a great film. But he seems to have this "don't ask questions of my work" attitude. In an interview about the Happening he implied it was a good movie because it was SUPPOSED to be cheesy. That's ridiculous. He needs to humble himself, take a good critical look at his work, and make a masterpiece. I know he can, because he damn near did it with his two films. Stop fucking around and thinking your infallible.

Yes you are missing something. In the universe of Avatar: TLA, the world is divided into four nations, one for each element; earth, air, fire, water. The people born into those nations will only ever be able to manipulate the element of there nation state so people born in the fire nation can only "bend" fire. In the series it seems to be about fifty/fifty inherited and training. However there exists in the world one person who's capable of manipulating all four elements (assuming he gets trained) and that person is called the avatar. That person is born into one of the four nations and he will first master the element of his home nation and then he will be sent to the other nations to learn there element. The nation of the avatar changes with each rebirth so aang was born an airbender but in his previous life he was born a firebender and before that an earthbender etc etc. The role of the avatar is to keep the peace between the four nations however aang past life fucked up and when he died the fire nation started a war with the other nations. They started by attacking the air nation because they knew the avatar would be born into the air nation hence why aang is the last airbender because he managed to escape whilst the rest of his people died.

    Good for the marketing people

    by filmcoyote

Once again a marketing department has found the few seconds of decent looking moments in an inevitably atrocious movie and made us all think it will be good - enough that we'll ignore the reviews and give it a shot. You can put lipstick on a dead duck but in the morning it's still gonna stink. I fell for this shit (shame on me) with both The Village and The Happening. Decent trailers made me think, maybe despite the last film this one could be good. But no. The Happening defenders astound me. I can get Signs defenders, Village defenders, even Lady in the Water defenders (that was hugely misrepresented in the marketing, setting it up for a colossal fall) but The Happening? Laughable dialogue, wooden acting (not just from the always reliably terrible Wahlberg but also from usually decent actors), a complete lack of tension or intrigue. I admire what the marketing guys have managed to pull together here but i'm not falling for it again, Shyamalan should not be allowed to make movies anymore. He has one really good movie (Unbreakable) and one entertaining but massively overrated one (Sixth Sense - a friend of mine guessed the ending from the trailer it was so damn obvious) from a decade ago and nothing decent since.

Give an alternate take on an established genre. Like Unbreakable with Comic book super heroes. The 6th sense with ghost stories, and Signs with Alien invasions. With LITW its RPGs. But unless you get that you don't really get the movie.

    M. Night's done some great films and some bad ones

    by marksman230591

But the problems with his bad films is normally his writing. Look, some directors can do writing, others can't. M. Night has lost his touch in that department, but the guy's still a great director. And thankfully, this is an ADAPTATION of a well-written animated series, so that gives me hope that it'll be good. And this TV sport wasn't bad either. And the music they used for it is TOTALLY understandable, since they're gonna be showing it to the football-watching crowd...

    Last Airbender = YELLOW FACE

    by mazuzu

There is a persistent myth and belief that actors of color cannot carry films. This bias has been apparent for decades, since the era of Charlie Chan – the most popular film character of the 1930s, based on an actual Asian American police officer… played by a Caucasian actor in yellowface.

For the Charlie Chan films and television series, the main actor had to be white.

The performers of color – people of genuinely Asian descent – could make appearances as family members or other background extras. That was then and this is now.

Eighty years later and still people of color are only allowed in the background. An entire tribe populated using extras from Greenland – a nation that is almost 90% of Inuit heritage – is championed by two Caucasians.

OK. M. Night’s last few pics have sucked donkey dick, so for him to be handling thin project is pretty much a make or brake deal. But this really really looks good. All the elements that made the cartoon seem to be there, but if the story is weak or just plain fucked up its gonna fail big time. Hopefully, he doesn't add on one of his "famous" twists. I really do hope that he pulls it off and the movie is great. I only wish they would have stuck with the original cartoon’s title.

    Made it through Book 2

You know, no movie or three can compare with the equivalent of 30 movies. Im going to start on the last book now and have a whole story, done right. If the movie is good awesome, if it sucks ass, oh well it doesn't hurt the show at all.
