* With most shows on the Big Three in repeats, “Bones” and “Fringe” dominated Thursday, matching or exceeding previous season highs.

* “Vampire Diaries” surged, tying “The Deep End” in 18-49 at 8 p.m.

* The “Diaries” increase did not help “Supernatural,” which drove away CW viewers at 9 p.m. as “Fringe” rocketed skyward.

* Jeff Probst’s terminal-illness reality pilot devastated his usual “Survivor” slot, scoring a sub-CW 1.0. A repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” pulled a 2.4 in that slot last week. “Survivor’s” autumn scores looked like this:

3.9 (4.2) (3.9) (3.1) (3.8) (4.0) (3.7) (3.7) (4.0) (3.5) (3.4) (3.7) (3.7) (3.6)

* “The Deep End” looks deeply doomed. If it can’t garner an audience against “Live For The Moment” and “Community” repeats, what hope does it have when “Survivor” and the Olympics return in the coming weeks? Its failure I think is indicative of a growing weariness among viewers of ABC's relentlessly unfunny dramedies. "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives," "Brothers & Sisters" and "Ugly Betty" have all touched series lows this season.

* More people may have seen Jay Leno on Thursday's “Oprah” than on Thursday’s “Jay Leno Show,” which plummeted to a new Thursday low against repeats on the other networks. 94% of Oprah’s audience thinks Leno should not return to “The Tonight Show.” 47% of 129 media execs polled by MediaPost disagreed with NBC’s decision to pull Conan O’Brien from 11:35 p.m. versus 41% who thought returning Leno to that slot was the right move. “Leno Show” has seven episodes left. NBC pre-empted “Leno” Wednesday for State of the Union analysis and will do so again for next Tuesday’s premiere of “Lost.” Jay Leno, take this from somebody who once respected your comedy: Dan Finnerty and The Dan Band is anti-funny; it is the Dancing Itos for a new decade; it is the only “Leno Show” segment less entertaining than the Green Car Challenge, which is saying something.

* “Burn Notice” beat both "Leno" and ABC's "Private Practice" repeat at 10 p.m.

James Hibberd recommended Fox stick with “Fringe” on Thursdays. Find his analysis here.

I don't watch late night talk show but talk about a douche. This guy has zero comedy talent and has just used this late night debacle for his own glory. Kimmel, your show sucks, and you couldn't hold Leno's jock when it comes to ratings. And the only press you haven't gotten lately is your little diatribes against Leno. Screw Leno, and pay attention to that "talk show" you pretend is funny.

I saw Leno on Oprah. (that sounds sick)

    by chuck_chuckwalla

And all I can say is that he's a fucking sociopath. I didn't really believe that he has any lack of remorse or guilt about taking back the tonight show. I think he only feels bad for letting this get out of control and making himself look bad. His point for doing so was that his crew would stay employed. But it's hard for me to buy into that since they had five years to prepare themselves to find other work and Leno could have cut them a sweet buyout deal much like Conan did for his folks. Saying that the other guy's ratings were bad is bullshit because he was the lead-in for Conan. And going along with the idea of having a half-assed, half hour show at 11:35 —— and not seemingly having any qualms about upsetting the established structure of NBC late night programming that has endured for decades didn't bother him at all. Conan's decision to leave and not have the Tonight Show start until midnight shows that he understands that it's not just a show —— it's a fucking dynasty. Conan has class doing that. And when she asked him a couple of times if he had talked to Conan he looked like the biggest pussy and said "It's not the right time." Sure, Leno's not going to call Conan to discuss it, that's just another trait of the sociopath, to hide when the shit rolls your way. Of course, he's known for this shit, he fucked Letterman, and his producer used to blackball guests for appearing on other shows (Arsenio Hall, Dennis Miller), telling them that if they go on other shows, they won’t be invited on the Tonight Show.

And why do I side with a multi-millionaire like Conan? Liking his show over Leno's is a factor but the main reason is because I can empathize with him. My experiences working in the corporate world has shown me that there are truly callous people who lack empathy and have no conscience. So yeah, Leno, you and Zuckerman can talk about numbers and ratings points to justify why you're right in pushing out Conan, a lot of your former viewership just doen't see it that way.

Jay Leno is Not a Douche Bag

    by karuma

He is the consummate professional. NBC asked him to give up a Number One rated show so that they could promote their golden boy so that he wouldn't get tired of waiting for the big show, even though he was nobody when he took it. The problem is, Jay wasn't ready to retire. Carson was almost 70 when he left and it was his own decision. What they should have done is promote Dave in 1992 and Jay would have been happy on CBS for the last 18 years, while you would have castigated Letterman for not getting out of the way. The bad guys in all of this are the suits at NBC, like they almost always are. They have no idea what they are doing and they don't know how to fix problems. Granted, some of Leno's bits on the new show were cringe worthy, but he was breaking new ground, and that always comes with pain. So cast your ire where it belongs and not on a guy who did everything the right way. Remember also, it's Conan who decided to leave. He could have had his dream job intact except at a different time, but so what? Most of us time shift anyway.

NBC being wrong doesn't make Leno 100% right

    by booster gold lives

I think everyone can agree that NBC absolutely positively 100% completely screwed the pooch with the whole Leno/Conan situation. Nothing they did helped matters, would have helped matters, or or was in any way intelligent or helpful to their own cause. That said, Leno's got some skin in it, too. He could've walked away in 2004, he could've walked away in 2009, he could've walked away two weeks ago -- and as much was said on Oprah. He didn't. His going along with the network's clusterfuck strategy with late-night following his own show's disaster only exacerbated the problem. So supposedly NBC wouldn't release him from his contract (even though they were yanking his show) -- what would have happened if he'd turned down the move back to late-night? What would've happened if he'd quit? We'll never know. Leno may actually be a nice guy to deal with, I've heard as much myself, but I hope he tanks in his return to the Tonight Show (or that Conan kicks his ass when he eventually returns to late-night on another network) -- not because of him necessarily, but because NBC deserves to get anally raped with a white-hot poker for shitting where they eat like this.

Herc says: "“Supernatural,” which drove away CW viewers at 9 p.m. as “Fringe” rocketed skyward."I fail to comprehend why Herc insists on taking jabs at shows that have a strong following on the talkbacks... i mean, does herc get paid by the post? maybe thats why he loves making backhanded insults at shows we are clearly enjoying. Herc, howabout saying: "Dollhouse DROVE AWAY viewers because it took a season and a half to get good." BUT GUYS, TONIGHT IS THE EPISODE WHERE DOLLHOUSE REALLY GETS AWESOME! Truth be told, I don't think anyone actually trusts or respects Herc's TV knowledge... Personally, I come here because i can trust alot of talkbackers, and the idiots are easy to identify (has anyone ever decided to re-examine whether or not they like a show because a talkbacker says "This is still on???") But you know what? I genuinely think Dollhouse has, in fact, gotten good--and i'm happy for that. I'm REALLY hoping that I read talkbackers say how most if not all of the loose ends are tied up. its a shame that these talkbacks can entertain and inform so well, but not have a reliable driving force that can REALLY get good conversation going. I visit the Milwaukee Brewers blog on jsonline.com many times a day, because the reporter goes to great lengths to give us stuff to talk about during the whole offseason, then providing exceptional coverage when moves start to be made as the season approaches, and when moves are made, we ask Tom H stuff we're wondering about the team and he goes and asks the GM and reports back to us IN the blogs and answers questions... basically, HE DOES HIS FUCKING JOB, EARNS HIS BLOGGERS RESPECT AND HAS ENOUGH PROFESSIONALISM TO NEVER GET PETTY.

of all the Late Night shows once Leno returns. If you show everyone the fact that Leno is getting twice the ratings as Letterman and four times the ratings of Kimmel every night, I won't call you a loser with a vendetta against Leno (simply because your hero, the Pornographer Howard Stern hates him). If you haven't noticed, he's posting the ratings of (almost)every television show that airs in primetime, hence the reason why he's including Leno's shitty ratings. Leno is fair game. No reason to act all butthurt because your hero is getting demolished in a time-slot he doesn't belong in.

    by coughlins laws

ratings is to trash the Leno program. Leno is the ONLY show he ALWAYS mentions when he shows these ratings. I guarantee you he won't be posting the ratings anymore once Leno's off Prime Time. Maybe for a little while, or till the end of this year, but he's not interested in Prime Time Ratings. He's obsessed with Leno. He has proven this time and time again. I'm not even that big a fan of Leno, or Late Night in general. I just find the attacks on him way out of line and unfair. Letterman and Conan lost the Tonight Show all by themselves through no fault of Leno. All Leno did was destroy everyone else in the ratings for 15 years. Conan lost over 60% of Leno's audience. If you hypocrites watched his show, or didn't admit that you watched his show non-live, Conan would still be on the air. But you didn't watch his show. It's YOUR FAULT he's not on the air anymore...

  • Then learn a little history. Leno deserves the contempt. And Leno was able to beat his competition because NBC was actually good and had great lineups. Leno's lead-in were incredible. When NBC started going down the shitter, lo and behold Leno's ratings started to dip too. Look it up, theres a NY Times or Post article about it, where it showed his ratings were dropping a certain % every year since 2005. Conan took over when NBC was on the brink of irrelevancy, if they weren't already. Hard to compare the two when one situation was more ideal than the other.

Isn't it cute how Hercules still believes that one show's success (or lack of) is largely due to what show was on before, and how another's show's audience changes the channel, not because the show they were watching has ended, but because the show that has just started drove them away. Silly Herc, stuck in magical land where remote controls, 300+ channels, DVDs, and the internet don't exist; where changing the channel is akin to rotating the tires on your car - you do it know and again but only when absolutely necessary as it's a huge pain in the ass. And, yes, Ryanbraun14, he does it to get a reaction.

you're right. it was also funny how herc kept finding ways to put a bad spin on the smallville ratings even though they were going up little by little every week--they never went down. Also, its funny how, when possible, he compares dollhouse ratings to something on the CW--as if CW programming is on the same playing field as FOX. By the numbers, what is a failure on FOX could be considered solid on CW.

I thought all the Fringe stand-alones....

    by jaysin420

were a bad idea but ratings have been way up for the past few episodes.

That's what I get for not believing in the JJ.

    X-files plot points?

    by zardozap2005

You mean the whole running "make-it-up-as-we-go-along" alien invasion that they dragged out and beat to death, over and over for the life of the series without giving us any overly clear answers, just vague insinuations? X-Files should have wrapped that shit up in two to three seasons and moved on. A lot of the stand alone X-Files episodes rate as some of the best of the series.

as superior to Fringe's. Fringe's mythology is just as convoluted as The X-Files. But, the series finale did pretty much tie up all the loose ends of the mythology when Mulder was put on trial. Unfortunately, it was a very dry affair.

    Supernatural

    by my pretty pony

Last week, "Vampire Diaries" hit a season low, even though the previous episode ended on a pretty big cliffhanger. Even so, "Supernatural" had a season high. If the ratings went down this week, it was probably because the episode was mostly filler. There weren't any huge revelations about the apocalypse or anything like that. Next week's episode should do better, since it looks like a pretty big one. I'm pretty sure someone's going to die.

Oprah asked him why he didn't just walk away. Leno said that would have been easy but he didn't want to put his crew out of work. Oprah pointed out that if he had walked him and his crew would have gotten millions. Nice try there Leno

    by ryanbraun14

there was KIND OF a plot point about the apocalypse in the new supernatural, that being how there's a bounty on Dean's head. I wonder if Crowley was trying to get the bounty by leading sam and dean to believe that the colt could kill lucifer. No show aside from Rescue Me can mix awesome, hard hitting drama, yet be laugh out loud hilarious at times (dean committing sam to the psych ward, and one of the more hilarious non-comedy hourlongs ever with that groundhog day/dean dies a billion times episode.)

    Coughlin's Laws...

    by red ned lynch

...just a couple of points. 1. The Jay Leno show was the only prime time network show on five nights of the week. 2. When the Jay Leno show was announced it was with a lot of hype stating that it would revolutionize television, that the cost-effective ratings it would earn would usher in an era of similar low cost variety programs. Therefore its rating held more significance than say...Lie To Me. Now I don't doubt for an instant that Herc wanted Leno to fail. I wanted Leno to fail, though it wasn't out of animosity for Leno. It was because I like good television drama, and there's little enough of that already. Now Herc may well dislike Leno for any number of other reasons. His portrayal of the Crimson Chin springs to my mind, though I only hold it against him because I have kids in the age range that forces me to be aware of Fairly Oddparents. As for the Conan/Leno snafu, once again I don't really care. Don't watch any of the late night shows so I don't have a dog in the fight or a horse in the race. Clearly you love yourself some Leno. But this is the second time old Jay seems to have been involved in some curious shenanigans involving gaining control of that Tonight Show desk. Maybe he was innocent as the virgin snow both times and everyone's just misunderstood him. Maybe you just like him enough you don't care. Won't change any of our lives in any way what ratings he gets doing late night, though. Conan will have his show, Dave will have his, even Kimmel will likely have his for a little while, so whatever flavor people want it'll be there for him. Jay succeeding in prime-time, though, that could have impacted the entertainment palette available for everyone. So if Herc doesn't follow the late night ratings it just might have to do with that. Or sure, it's a conspiracy against you and Jay. Yeah, that's possible too.

Fringe: Okay, maybe I need to watch that episode again

    by tomonicker

Just who was the 100 year old Nazi? He yelled, "Traitor!" at the end towards Walter... Hmm. Maybe I need to rewatch, and there's nothing there... When the crew went down into the basement without gear AFTER they just searched the whole fucking place with it on, I was old man yelling at the screen, " Oh, for Christ's sake, you stupid gits!!! " Oh, and fuck Jay for going on Oprah and even talking about it when Conan is likely legally obstructed from similar behavior...

i may be way late on to the game here, but has it been brought up that the handprint they always show has six fingers? i just noticed it last week. I'm really curious to see what those images they show before commercials mean.

Place any quality show after Vampire Diaries on WB

    by frodofraggins

And you're likely to lose viewers. The Vampire Diaries is insipid teenage angst on a network primarily focused on teenage angst.

Fringe would be much better if they killed off the dawson's creek dude and established a compelling mythology.

    by roninredshade

...is that The Tonight Show with Jay Leno 2, will get awesome ratings, thereby justifying his return. But only because Jay Leno will have strong lead-in's instead of THE JAY LENO SHOW! Conan never stood a chance with that lead-in.

you have no idea what you're talking about. The Walter/Peter relationship is arguably the best father/son relationship on TV. There is a huge mythology behind the show, and they are clearly building it up, slowly, steadily and more than anything, subtly. Of course, you need to have been watching every episode and paying very close attention to it. i'd be willing to bet you haven't done that.

No spoilers (even though you don't trust me). It's simply an article about someone who cracked the FRINGE code. Each of the pictures they show during the commercials is different even if they look similar (a change in the number of fingers on the hands, the location of the dot near the butterfly). He worked out that each one represents a letter in the alphabet and went to work on compiling a FRINGE alphabet before applying it to the first season. Each episode's code created a word related to something within the episode.

The fact that Leno's ratings are in the dirt....

    by wordage

...even amidst all this controversy is really telling. Curiosity in the wake of the late night wars haven't brought viewers to watch Leno's show like a car wreck at the side of the road, and it hasn't rallied Leno fans to support their slack-jawed skunk. Leno stinks...and his fanbase is on life-support and won't be around much longer...literally.

Nazi story should have been a two-parter

    by iluvsyfy

They had an opportunity to build some intensity and numerous questions with this episode and blew it on a quick ending. This storyline could have lead to something epic but they killed it way to fucking quick. Way to drop the ball on this one. I really do hope they understnad their error and bring the Nazi's back. This has some real promise.

    by turketron_2

Supposedly we return to the mythology next week, and it's about damn time! Even though the monster of the week episodes have been entertaining, it's time to get back to the meat and potatoes. Same with Supernatural, I thought this week's episode was MUCH stronger than the previous mental ward wraith episode, and at least had a little something to do with the main storyline. It's time to get back to the apocalypse though.

    yeah right

    by mad_taffer

Haven't you heard? Bashing Supernatural is cool, all of the kids are doing it. Honestly, the only time I hear bad things about Supernatural's ratings is when i'm on here. It's apparent that for some reason he doesn't like the show...his loss. It's been on for 5 seasons and has a steady fanbase and the CW are looking to a possible 6th season, so obviously they are happy with the ratings. And this show is not even close to being "on the bubble".

Fringe is fantastic, which of course means that it keeps losing viewers, will get re-newed for a 3rd season but get moved to Friday nights. Thanks in advance Fox! :P

Most likely Supernatural will have a 6th season. Ostroff is HAPPY (hear that Herc) with the ratings and Kripke's creative well has apparently not run dry. Even though the plan was to only run for 5 seasons and wrap it up ala LOST.

    Vampire Diaries

    by frozen01

A co-worker of mine insisted I watch this show, even though I knew it was going to be just as bad as Twilight. Surprisingly, I was wrong.
It was so. much. worse. than. Twilight.
I made it all the way through the first Twilight movie. Granted, I was drunk, but, you know... I made it exactly 10 minutes through Vampire Diaries, through the "vervain" that when ingested keeps vamps away up until the compass that points to the nearest bloodsucker. And that was it, I couldn't take it anymore. I never thought I'd say this, but although Twilight had terrible acting and a completely unbearable set of main characters, at least it didn't have compasses that pointed out when there was a vampire standing next to you.
I think it's pretty appropriate that Vampires Diaries isn't the only thing with the initials VD... and it's just as enjoyable, too.
