ABC's Beautification Project: UGLY Dumped!!

Published at:  Jan 27, 2010 3:53:05 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

One Thursday evening three and a half years ago “Ugly Betty” beat “Survivor.” This generated a zillion stories about how “Survivor” was on its way out.

Yesterday “Survivor” received early renewals for a 21st and 22nd season, and today ABC gave the “Ugly Betty” the designer boot. Says ABC:

We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.

Though "Betty" has improved slightly since moving from Fridays to Wednesdays, repeats of “Modern Family” routinely garner roughly the same 18-49 audience as new episodes of the America Ferrera dramedy. Here’s how it ranks in 18-49 among ABC series this season:

    Better Off Ted

    by skimn

The "workplace-as-family" comedy has kind of peaked with The Office and 30 Rock. Thats why "family-as-family/friends-as-family" comedies like The Middle, Modern Family, and CougarTown have succeeded. Better Off Ted, as funny as it can be, was just off the mark by about five years.

Can we pray that Brothers & Sisters, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES join the ranks of Samantha Who?, Lipstick Jungle, Women's Murder Club, Men in Trees and Dirty Sexy Money? Heck, even Eli Stone & Pushing Daisies were chick shows that guys (like me) happened to find a bit palatable.

I like that show. It's not quite as funny as it thinks it is, but the episodes are very enjoyable and the cast is great. Every now and then it hits a joke perfectly and I remember why I'm watching. If it is cancelled I will be watching exactly one ABC show regularly: LOST. I liked V when it started to get going, despite ABCs retarded "pod" idea, but I'm sure the show will be a mangled THING when it returns in March.

Time to face it, the networks are dead. Besides NBC Thursday and Modern Family, not one show is worth a shit this year. 24 is embarrassing now, and House has been stuck running in circles all season. Thank God for FX and HBO on Netflix.

    Betty

    by the alienist

I remember, about two years ago, thinking how impressive American television comedy had become. How three shows, "Ugly Betty", "Pushing Daisies" and "Scrubs" each created their own reality, created thier own very funny satirical world full of wit and heart. Some had bright colors, some had overtly gay sensibilities. But all were expertly written and wonderfully acted by players who all seemed to somehow be on the same page. All three were very different but all three upped the ante just a little bit. Now, all were favorites, but not THE favorite (that would be the 'almost' real world "The Office") and I even gave up on "Scrubs" after awhile. But I'm still impressed with them and think that their collective absence from our TV's will make the medium a little lesser for awhile.

Yes, but they air two seasons a year - one in Fall, one in Spring. Still, that's 10 years on TV."Right now it looks like a DNA breakdown of my morning shit."Scrolling past quickly to get to the bottom I was reminded of the early days of computers, when images were created using letters, numbers, and punctuation. Stand back from that jumbled mess above, squint and you can see the sailboat.

America Ferrera Couldn't Stand Working with Lohan

    by kevinwillis.net

But sources say that America is the root of all the shows problems. Interesting, as I thought the root of the shows problems was that it was a one trick pony and got boring pretty fast.Interesting the America literally chased Lindsey Lohan from her guest stint on the show. Catty!

I don't like the way Survivor says "seasons"

It makes it sound like it's been on as long as The Simpsons and it's not even close.

just got more boring. when hilda's boyfriend got shot. i thought wow. there is something dark and radical. the atmosphere around that ep was dark and forboding with a lightining storm in the offing. nobody has mentioned that the real star is vanessa williams. but all the air has gone out of this flat tire of a show. I loved all of williams skuldduggery.
