New Canadian Promo Suggests SMALLVILLE’s Justice Society Movie Gives Viewers Some Full-On Green Lantern Action??

Published at:  Jan 26, 2010 2:52:30 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

There’s a new Canadian promo for the Feb. 5 Justice Society episode of “Smallville.” Lots of new footage, including an intriguing shot of Alan Scott’s Green Lantern ring on a flesh-and-blood hand. Is Oliver Queen getting a big power upgrade?

In the DC funnybooks Ollie is famous for hanging around with Hal Jordan, the silver-age Green Lantern. Is Green Arrow going to turn Green Lantern himself, if only for an episode? Or is that Lois Lane’s manly mitt in the promo?

CHEAPEST LOST EVER!!
$16.99 Season One!!
$16.99 Season Two!!
$19.99 Season Four!!

    Getting ahead of ourselves

    by franconeroluv

    1) If it is JSA then it would probably be Alan Scott's mystical Green Lantern ring and not Hal Jordan's willpower based ring.
    2) It looks like (faked) b&w film footage of the ring while everything else is color, combine that with the previous trailer showing Clark discovering the JSA hall of justice which looks like a museum, and I would have to guess he is just watching an old archived film of the JSA and not actually Green Lantern in action.

I dislike the show, but when I saw a promo with Dr. Fate and Hawkman, I decided I would have to tune in for this.

Not only did they leave that "No tights, no flights" crap behind, but they're trying to bring on the goofiest fucking costumes and characters and making them work in the show's universe. The legion, the JSA, the fucking wonder twins. completely out there, deep comic book shit. And it works. It's such a gigantic fuck you to the two losers before them.

two questions for a guy out of the Smallville loop

    by m00kiedood

Please help me out, I admit to feeling Smallville-curious at the moment.

    1) there seems to be a big "Watchmen" type vibe here, what with what appears to be a look back at an older society of masked heroes. Is this right? Is this new to this movie, or has it been established prior?

    2) When did Clark start wearing the Matrix outfit with the Supes logo? Is this new, too, or has the logo been showing up on the show and on his chest prior to this?

Justice Society has existed for at least 30 years before watchmen. Watchmen was a deconstruction of the superhero comics, which is partly influenced by a supergroup such as the justice society.Any REAL comic fans have an opinion? NOBODY is talking about GEOFF FUCKING JOHNS writing this TV movie. Geoff Johns is a superhero GOD and one of the top 3 people i'd invite to my 'fantasy dinner party' (other two being Larry David and Jay Z).

1.)Correct, this is new for the movie. The JSA's existence in the Smallville show universe isn't known to others. My guess is Dr. Fate mindwiped the Earth of their existence and we'll find out why.Clark started wearing the Matrix outfit this year. I think this movie will put him on the path to wearing the Superman suit.

    by the beast

In regards to the Green Lantern power ring and the film grain, I think we are going to see "old film footage" of the old JSA... maybe like an old war movie-maybe in a flashback sequence showing what happened to them (to quote Doctor Fate in the clip where Clark asks who they are: "let me show you my friend"), if ever briefly. I also think they might pull a "show them all at the end, grateful for their assisted return" kind of thing, possibly asking Clark to join the ranks of the team.

So none of the heroes that have guest starred on Smallville to date (green arrow, aquaman, etc.) were a part of the Justice Society ... but they are in the Justice League.

So there really is a Watchmen vibe here, akin to the Minutemen / Crimebusters groups. That photo of the Justice Society really reminds me of the old Minutemen photo from Watchmen.

Just to be clear, at least in the comics Star-Spangled Kid was not Courtney's mentor. He died years before she ever found the cosmic energy belt. If she had a mentor, it was Pat Dugan, her stepfather. He was the Golden Age hero Stripesy and wore the S.T.R.I.P.E battle suit in Courtney's comic, "Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E." She also bugged Jack "Starman" Knight a lot, and in the end he admitted she wasn't such a bad kid.

    by r2dtoo

Why is it that readers of this site are so negative about THINGS THEY HAVEN'T SEEN YET!?! This could be great and it could be shit, let's find out via the controversial technique of watching the show! Yes Smallville fails to capture the essence of Superman (I for one have a problem with just how many of his enemies seem to be as powerful as he is) but what show has EVER got it right? Answer: a single line in the very last episode of 'Justice League Unlimited', where he describes to Darkseid how he is always holding back because, to him, "the world is paper". When one moment of one show in 60 or so years manages to get it right, I think we can cut the others some slack. Let's watch this and enjoy it for what it is: the best we have until Hollywood gets someone with some talent to write the Superman movie we're all waiting for!

    by jaylenotookmyjob

It was a different Green Lantern than the one that palled around with Green Arrow. The Alan Scott Green Lantern had nothing to do with the Green Lantern Corp, didn't even know about them. Also, he made his own ring using metal from the power lantern he found. That could be a good excuse for why it looks so cheesy. Wiki his convoluted origin and history if you want to know more, it's too confusing to go into here and I don't want to type that much.

Calling him superboy? and 'the guy who plays superboy'? you know damn well Tom Welling is the actor. Also, WHO GIVES A FUCKING SHIT how old the ACTOR is! He looks far younger than he is, and that's all that matters... its not like this is fucking saved by the bell we're dealing with here. And the reason he hasn't been able to fly yet is because of the GODAWFUL old showrunners--the new guys will have made it happen in the first season and a half that they've had control over the show. Sometimes you can be just as bad as the talkbackers, herc.

Just finished Season 8 on DVD a few weeks back, and IMHO it was the best season so far. Doomsday was a little off, but the Lois and Clark stuff is really getting there. Not too mention the Red Blur contacting Lois and letting her in on his whole deal, and saying she'll be the first to get the scoop. It's really all coming together. I know it's taken forever, but I really feel that it's getting close to the Superman we all know and love. I think the costumes look great as far as TV is concerned. And when it comes to comics on the screen, someone said it in the Walking Dead post, TV is where it's at. It allows time to really delve into the stories and arcs that these characters experience. The movies are restricted to 2 hours +, and that usually doesn't get the job done, or right (Iron Man and TDK excluded). I would love to see more comics brought to the small screen, if done right (not like Heroes as of past Season 1) these shows could draw a big following and be done properly and do the characters justice.

    come to think of it

    by ryanbraun14

come to think of it, herc, have YOU mentioned how Geoff Johns is writing this? Even if the old showrunners will still running the show and Geoff Johns was writing these episodes, you'd have every reason in the book to get excited for this "tv movie." Geoff Johns is a MEGA-X Factor and based on him and him alone being involved, you can throw out every other minute of the entire series and still bank on this turning out to be great.

    This looks great!

The costumes look much more convincing actually in the footage than simple stills. Dr. Fate seems perfect. I see no reason to complain.

    JSA Members appearing...

    by gislef_crow

Note that Sylvester Pemberton, aka The Star-Spangled Kid (and Star Girl's predecessor) does appear briefly at the beginning. As does a JSA villain from the comics. Plus there's supposed to be some major JSA villain behind the overall plot. Hopefully it's the guy that the lesser-tier villain currently works for in the comics.

I didn't know Geoff Johns wrote this.

I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up and expect to see a yellow lantern ring show up in this tv movie, eh?

BTW: That image of Green Lantern up there...

...totally looks like one half of the Ambiguously Gay Duo.

    One thing about Smallville:

    by rabidfnark

I've always felt that the cast was a really good one...It was just the writers and showrunners (well, the old ones anyway) who often didn't measure up. It might be the one show that I can say I've watched just for the cast and never for the writing (until I heard about Geoff Johns, at least. Thanks for fucking up my record.)

And I'll bet the ring looks better in motion

    by rabidfnark

when you don't have to stare at it in one picture like that. But yeah, up there it looks like something plastic...out of a vending machine, maybe.

I tried watching Smallville on DVD

    by i_snake_plissken

Missed the series when it first started. I gave up on the 2md or 3rd disc of the first series - as soon as his opponent was an evil high school gym teacher who could set the sprinklers on fire, that pretty much killed it for me. I've heard the series was pretty good, if that's the case, how long did it take to improve?

    SMALLVILLE started to improve...

    by master bruce

only last year, when they finally got showrunners who werern't embarassed by & respected the source material. These guys have a healthy respect for the DCU & it shows! I hope this movie scores big w/a JSA spin-off series as a result! And how 'bout a GREEN ARROW series as well already?

    by jaysin420

thanks, I can't believe how good this looks. It'd be cool if some other members of Oliver's team show up though (aquaman, impulse, etc), even for just a short scene at the end.

The only one I know that is going to pop up in an upcoming episode is Zatanna (after the Absolute Justice movie). Lois gets jealous enough that she dons a Wonder Woman type outfit in the episode.
