New Canadian Promo Suggests SMALLVILLE’s Justice Society Movie Gives Viewers Some Full-On Green Lantern Action??

I am – Hercules!!
There’s a new Canadian promo for the Feb. 5 Justice Society episode of “Smallville.” Lots of new footage, including an intriguing shot of Alan Scott’s Green Lantern ring on a flesh-and-blood hand. Is Oliver Queen getting a big power upgrade?
In the DC funnybooks
Ollie is famous for hanging around with Hal Jordan, the silver-age Green Lantern. Is Green Arrow going to turn Green Lantern himself, if only for an episode? Or is that Lois Lane’s manly mitt in the promo?

and its gonna suck
-
That shot of Alan Scotts GL Ring on someones hand was in the very first US Promo for this thing...nothing new....
-
Dude is getting CRAZY WORK post SG1. GOOD FOR HIM!
-
Screw GL, I am so stoked for Dr. Fate!!!!! I don't care how bad or cheesey the show is, I'm just jazzed to see Fate on screen in live-action anhk-ness!
-
It's Clark's...guess whose gonna fly?
-
It's because Green Lantern is only shown in cameo via old news footage. That's all.
-
That pic has been around since November.
-
That very same shot of the ring was in the promo I saw at the end of sweeps here on the east coast US. I know because I paused on it with my DVR.
-
Are they crazy?! There is another little show on that same day and time, perhaps you heard of it, It's called THE SUPERBOWL!! Talk about no ratings
-
1) If it is JSA then it would probably be Alan Scott's mystical Green Lantern ring and not Hal Jordan's willpower based ring.
2) It looks like (faked) b&w film footage of the ring while everything else is color, combine that with the previous trailer showing Clark discovering the JSA hall of justice which looks like a museum, and I would have to guess he is just watching an old archived film of the JSA and not actually Green Lantern in action.
I dislike the show, but when I saw a promo with Dr. Fate and Hawkman, I decided I would have to tune in for this. -
In the US it airs Feb 5th. Canada shows it Feb 7th.
-
I was really worried about how good this was gonna be before, but now I'm pretty confident itll at least be decent, Hawkman looks better in action, Fate looks awesome, and if they can throw in Alan Scott, they'll have won my heart
-
Not only did they leave that "No tights, no flights" crap behind, but they're trying to bring on the goofiest fucking costumes and characters and making them work in the show's universe. The legion, the JSA, the fucking wonder twins. completely out there, deep comic book shit. And it works. It's such a gigantic fuck you to the two losers before them.
-
Then again, that seems to be par for the course with this series.
-
post Smallville news? Yeah. This is way old.
-
But have a feeling I'll just wait to watch the blu-rays after it ends.
-
Please help me out, I admit to feeling Smallville-curious at the moment.
1) there seems to be a big "Watchmen" type vibe here, what with what appears to be a look back at an older society of masked heroes. Is this right? Is this new to this movie, or has it been established prior?
2) When did Clark start wearing the Matrix outfit with the Supes logo? Is this new, too, or has the logo been showing up on the show and on his chest prior to this? -

what's up with the justice league = davinci's last supper
by liquidlunch
imagery. embracing the superman = jesus jackassery?
-
the only JSA members appearing are Dr. Fate, Hawkman, and Stargirl.
-
Justice Society has existed for at least 30 years before watchmen. Watchmen was a deconstruction of the superhero comics, which is partly influenced by a supergroup such as the justice society.Any REAL comic fans have an opinion? NOBODY is talking about GEOFF FUCKING JOHNS writing this TV movie. Geoff Johns is a superhero GOD and one of the top 3 people i'd invite to my 'fantasy dinner party' (other two being Larry David and Jay Z).
-
If you paged through tons of issues of JSA and JLA you'd see an image such as that about a million times. That bash attempt is REALLY a stretch.
-
1.)Correct, this is new for the movie. The JSA's existence in the Smallville show universe isn't known to others. My guess is Dr. Fate mindwiped the Earth of their existence and we'll find out why.Clark started wearing the Matrix outfit this year. I think this movie will put him on the path to wearing the Superman suit.
-
And the ring definately looks like a cracker jack toy.
-
In regards to the Green Lantern power ring and the film grain, I think we are going to see "old film footage" of the old JSA... maybe like an old war movie-maybe in a flashback sequence showing what happened to them (to quote Doctor Fate in the clip where Clark asks who they are: "let me show you my friend"), if ever briefly. I also think they might pull a "show them all at the end, grateful for their assisted return" kind of thing, possibly asking Clark to join the ranks of the team.
-
The black guy is J'onn J'onzz, Manhunter from Mars. Also, Jackie Chiles, attorney for Cosmo Kramer.
Clark needs a Green Lantern ring to fly? Isn't the guy who plays Superboy old enough to play Jonathan Kent at this point? -
Check your DVR. NOT on during the Superbowl...
-
that's why she looks so young, but her mentor the star spangled kid was. Supposedly Clark gets the idea for his real costume from those two costumes.
-
...yet even I am excited by this! The costumes look AMAZING!! I really hope the characterization is executed equally well. They've been smashing the source material for years now. This could be redemption!
-
So none of the heroes that have guest starred on Smallville to date (green arrow, aquaman, etc.) were a part of the Justice Society ... but they are in the Justice League.
So there really is a Watchmen vibe here, akin to the Minutemen / Crimebusters groups. That photo of the Justice Society really reminds me of the old Minutemen photo from Watchmen.
But did someone up above say that the freaking Wonder Twins have made an appearance on this show too? Reallly?! -
"embracing the superman = jesus jackassery?"Clark was put on a cross in the pilot. Where have you been? And what are you afraid of?
-
Didn't anyone get a good look at "Cyborg's" getup a few seasons back? It's TV, people. Suspend disbelief. And remember what we had back when this series started. Icey swamp kids and fiery gym coaches. This is a site better than that. Eeesh.
-
Superman is not Jesus. He's Moses. He's also an illegal Jewish immigrant passing as a Christian, in metaphorical terms.
-
Just to be clear, at least in the comics Star-Spangled Kid was not Courtney's mentor. He died years before she ever found the cosmic energy belt. If she had a mentor, it was Pat Dugan, her stepfather. He was the Golden Age hero Stripesy and wore the S.T.R.I.P.E battle suit in Courtney's comic, "Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E." She also bugged Jack "Starman" Knight a lot, and in the end he admitted she wasn't such a bad kid.
-
Correct. The original roster of the JLA consisted of Superman,Batman,Wonder Woman,Green Lantern(Hal Jordan),Flash(Barry Allen),Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter. The painted portrait shown is the original roster of the JSA:Star Spangeled Kid,Wildcat,Atom,Sandman,The Spectre,Flash(Jay Garrick),Hawkman,Hawkgirl,Hourman,Dr. Midnight, Black Canary, Mr. Terrific (Dr. Fate isn't in the portrait). The Wondertwins appeared this season but weren't aliens. Gleek's face appeared on Jayna's rhinestone phone.
-
All cool and otherworldly and not just like some schmoe with a wastepaperbasket on his head. Cannot wait for this.
-
Sooo watching this. And Martian Manhunter is back!
-
In this clip, HAWKMAN could almost be mistaken for BATMAN!
-
Martian Manhunter is BLACK!lol
-
Why is it that readers of this site are so negative about THINGS THEY HAVEN'T SEEN YET!?! This could be great and it could be shit, let's find out via the controversial technique of watching the show! Yes Smallville fails to capture the essence of Superman (I for one have a problem with just how many of his enemies seem to be as powerful as he is) but what show has EVER got it right? Answer: a single line in the very last episode of 'Justice League Unlimited', where he describes to Darkseid how he is always holding back because, to him, "the world is paper". When one moment of one show in 60 or so years manages to get it right, I think we can cut the others some slack. Let's watch this and enjoy it for what it is: the best we have until Hollywood gets someone with some talent to write the Superman movie we're all waiting for!
-
That's not sarcasm. The costumes are miles above the quality of this shite http://en.w ikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ju stice_League_of_America.JPG
And in a time of embarrassed costume design in live-action superheroes this is neat. On a side note, I hate it when people copy and paste Wikipedia text and pass it off as their own knowledge. It's way too obvious, guys. -
Oh, and that post wasn't directed entirely at this Talkback, but rather at many of the anti-Smallville diatribes I've been reading in my seven years as an unregistered user of this (sometimes brilliant, sometimes infuriating) site.

It's supposed to be the Alan Scott Lantern, you know.
by jaylenotookmyjob
It was a different Green Lantern than the one that palled around with Green Arrow. The Alan Scott Green Lantern had nothing to do with the Green Lantern Corp, didn't even know about them. Also, he made his own ring using metal from the power lantern he found. That could be a good excuse for why it looks so cheesy. Wiki his convoluted origin and history if you want to know more, it's too confusing to go into here and I don't want to type that much.
-
He's there. In between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. Not shown in the portrait are Starman, and Johnny Thunder. (and Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.)
-

I wanted to guess that he was Martian Manhunter, but...

...my gut told me not to.
Stupid gut, that's the last time I listen to you! -
These talkbackers still enjoy posting that?Way to be pompous and take a snide back-handed jab at smallville, herc. Calling him superboy? and 'the guy who plays superboy'? you know damn well Tom Welling is the actor. Also, WHO GIVES A FUCKING SHIT how old the ACTOR is! He looks far younger than he is, and that's all that matters... its not like this is fucking saved by the bell we're dealing with here. And the reason he hasn't been able to fly yet is because of the GODAWFUL old showrunners--the new guys will have made it happen in the first season and a half that they've had control over the show. Sometimes you can be just as bad as the talkbackers, herc.
-
One step forward two steps back. Let him fly and put on the damn costume! Kill somebody! Hire new writers! I Liked Season 8, it seemed more...driven than previous seasons. Let's try to keep that up (seems to be lagging again). I'd like my guilty pleasure to require less guilt.
-
They're looking at the 2028 season
-
at this point I would be less surprised if he became Batman. For Clark Kent to actually become Superman on this show (even if it happens in 2028) would be the greatest shock in TV history.
-
Herc, don't you have some Dollhouse to watch...oh yeah, I forgot. Sorry there buddy.
-
You mean, the "manly mitt" that belongs to this?
http://www.supermanhomepage.com/images/smallville2/erica-durance4.jpg
Yes, we know your beloved DOLLHOUSE is finally put down on Friday, Herc. No need get all petty and bitchy.
-
that the actual shot featuring the ring looked all grainy and old-tymey?
-
***SPOILER *** I'm guessing the dude that Stargirl is fighting in that clip is The Icicle?!
-
barffffffffffffff
-
Yeah. Talk about a deathwish timeslot.
-
Just finished Season 8 on DVD a few weeks back, and IMHO it was the best season so far. Doomsday was a little off, but the Lois and Clark stuff is really getting there. Not too mention the Red Blur contacting Lois and letting her in on his whole deal, and saying she'll be the first to get the scoop. It's really all coming together. I know it's taken forever, but I really feel that it's getting close to the Superman we all know and love. I think the costumes look great as far as TV is concerned. And when it comes to comics on the screen, someone said it in the Walking Dead post, TV is where it's at. It allows time to really delve into the stories and arcs that these characters experience. The movies are restricted to 2 hours +, and that usually doesn't get the job done, or right (Iron Man and TDK excluded). I would love to see more comics brought to the small screen, if done right (not like Heroes as of past Season 1) these shows could draw a big following and be done properly and do the characters justice.
-
Can't wait! And Clark is 23 years old.
-
It's on the friday before the superbowl.
-
stop going on about Welling being to old. Too old for what exactly?
At no point has anyone said Smallville is a prequel to Superman in any continuity, it exists in its own continuity, thereforer Clark can become Superman at any point in his life not just when fans think he hsould be.
And dont you love all things Whedon, in Buffy most of the cast were playing 18 year olds when they were in their late 20's!!!!!!!
I fail to see how Tom Welling cant play a 23 year old. -
I hope someone grabs his power ring and kicks some asses across Mertopolis. I am expecting that the ring-on-the hand bit is probably just one of those backstory/descriptive images--but no actual GL or GL action.
-
...in the Smallville-verse.
-
Clark Kent abandons crime-fighting to spend all his time on Facebook.
Lex Luther takes over the world.
Clark doesn't notice. -
Dirty!
-
You guys do realize thats exactly what Alan Scott's GL Ring looks like, don't you?
-
It's just a tv show, but it's fun.
-
The ring looks like its behind glass in the JLS headquarters...the flash's helmet is in there too. If GL was in it, they would be making a much bigger deal out of it. Because of movie rights, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and even Superman's suit will NOT be in Smallville. Sad but true.
-
Put this show up against the World Junior gold medal game? THEN you've got an audience of diehards and people too fat to get up and change the channel to the hockey game.
-
Uh the ring is clearly on someones hand, unless the hand is in a display case!
-
I mean, I don't give a rat's ass about the Super Bowl, but it's hardly comparable ratings-wise to a rerun of 24.
(You need four downs to go 10 yards? Pussies...) -
I believe you are right on both accounts...
-

With Nathan Fillion.
-
earth! fire! wind! water! heart! gooo Planet!
-
come to think of it, herc, have YOU mentioned how Geoff Johns is writing this? Even if the old showrunners will still running the show and Geoff Johns was writing these episodes, you'd have every reason in the book to get excited for this "tv movie." Geoff Johns is a MEGA-X Factor and based on him and him alone being involved, you can throw out every other minute of the entire series and still bank on this turning out to be great.
-
The costumes look much more convincing actually in the footage than simple stills. Dr. Fate seems perfect. I see no reason to complain.
-
for Lana to show up with super powers and Lois to don a fake super hero costume and need rescuing!!!
-
Note that Sylvester Pemberton, aka The Star-Spangled Kid (and Star Girl's predecessor) does appear briefly at the beginning. As does a JSA villain from the comics. Plus there's supposed to be some major JSA villain behind the overall plot. Hopefully it's the guy that the lesser-tier villain currently works for in the comics.
-
I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up and expect to see a yellow lantern ring show up in this tv movie, eh?
-
...totally looks like one half of the Ambiguously Gay Duo.
-
I've always felt that the cast was a really good one...It was just the writers and showrunners (well, the old ones anyway) who often didn't measure up. It might be the one show that I can say I've watched just for the cast and never for the writing (until I heard about Geoff Johns, at least. Thanks for fucking up my record.)
-
when you don't have to stare at it in one picture like that. But yeah, up there it looks like something plastic...out of a vending machine, maybe.
-
Missed the series when it first started. I gave up on the 2md or 3rd disc of the first series - as soon as his opponent was an evil high school gym teacher who could set the sprinklers on fire, that pretty much killed it for me. I've heard the series was pretty good, if that's the case, how long did it take to improve?
-
only last year, when they finally got showrunners who werern't embarassed by & respected the source material. These guys have a healthy respect for the DCU & it shows! I hope this movie scores big w/a JSA spin-off series as a result! And how 'bout a GREEN ARROW series as well already?

thanks, I can't believe how good this looks. It'd be cool if some other members of Oliver's team show up though (aquaman, impulse, etc), even for just a short scene at the end.
-
The only one I know that is going to pop up in an upcoming episode is Zatanna (after the Absolute Justice movie). Lois gets jealous enough that she dons a Wonder Woman type outfit in the episode.
