Forest Whitaker To Star In CBS’ CRIMINALS MINDS Spin-Off??

Published at:  Jan 26, 2010 12:43:35 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Concerned perhaps that it has not given over enough of its primetime schedule to procedurals, CBS is plotting a spin-off of “Criminal Minds” that would star Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland,” “The Shield,” “ER”).

The Hollywood Reporter describes its premise:

The project, which revolves around a new group of profilers who work outside the FBI bureaucracy, will be introduced on an episode of "Criminal Minds" in the spring.

Of the 19 primetime hours CBS programs between Sunday and Friday, only 13 currently deal with solving mysteries:

* Cold Case
* Criminal Minds
* CSI
* CSI Miami
* CSI NY
* The Ghost Whisperer
* The Good Wife
* Medium
* The Mentalist
* NCIS
* NCIS Los Angeles
* Numbers
* The Sunday Crime Drama Repeat

The other six hours are taken up with six sitcoms, two reality shows, and “60 Minutes.”

    I'm so tired of procedurals. They never show off any acting talent. They are boring, cookie-cutter BS. FW is better than this, for sure.

    Nice to see he survived it, but a TV show on CBS? He can do better than that.

    A strategy they have been extremely successful with. With ratings and profits that Jeff Zucker would probably murder someone for. Oh, wait, that could be an episode...

    Thanks for letting me know who this Forest Whitaker actor is. I woulf have never have guessed unlless you pointed out some of the films and tv shows he has been in already! His work on The Shield was fucking awesome. The dynamic between his character and that of Vic Mackey was pure TV platinum.

    Great Movie Actors Making The Move To T.V..

    by freebeer

    ..This is nothing new, but up until now the projects have been of such a high calibur you can see why they were tempted away from the big screen (Sopranos, Damages, Galactica etc..) But Lawerence Fishbourne doing fucking CSI, and now Whittaker doing Criminal Minds! Is it because Denzel and Smith are the only black actors in the hollywood casting agents rollodex?

    I agree...plus Forest Whittaker won so many awards, including a BAFTA, Golden Globe and fucking Oscar just a couple of years ago. Surely they must be paying him a lot to be in this shit.

    CBS works as a money machine

    by the mcpoyle clan

    but yeah, he can and should probably do better than yet another page from the CBS xerox machine. Add Leno to CBS in some bizarro universe and CBS would own it.

    Yet another CopDoctorLawyer show

    by the pelti

    Does the world need yet another bland, characterless procedural melodrama about a team of cardboard cutouts who solve crime. Can we stop pandering this "safe" garbage to the idiot midwesterners the ratings seem to focus on?

    by dukeroberts

    I haven't watched anything on CBS since Love Monkey. They canceled that after only 3 episodes. I hate that the Super Bowl is on CBS this year because with the exception of James Brown and Dan Marino, their pre-game sucks. CBS sucks.

    Say what you will

    by bytor

    But compared to NBC, CBS is showing the Royal Fucking Shakespeare Company Greatest Performances in prime time.

    And, believe it or not, a few of the procedurals aren't bad; Criminal Minds itself was pretty good when Patinkin was still there (Joe Mantegna is "meh").

    If my choice is craploads of procedurals or craploads of reality crap and Leno...gimme the procedurals any day.

    by crow3711

    But seriously, are the same people who watch CSI also the people who watch all the other mystery shows? How have we, as a species, not run out of mysteries to solve n hour long procedurals? Don't people get tired of it? Can't they, eventually, guess every twist and plot point minutes before it happens at this point? We're a doomed race, I tell you. We are no longer interested in being challenged or challenging ourselves.

    Forest Whitaker doing a TV series doesn't surprise me

    by big jim

    Why not headline his own tv show? Gets a steady gig that'll keep him in one place for, conceivably, several years. Plus he can do the occasional movie during his show's downtime.

    That seems more like a Law and Order episode snowpuff. Ripped from headlines! Being that L & O is on his network makes it that much funnier.

    criminal minds

    by easyxrules

    is by far my favorite procedural show on cbs. So I'll check it out. Although I really don't need another spin off procedural cop show. They already have what 3 spin offs on cbs? Seems like too much.

    I am just glad we have 2 super smart black men on TV

    by ragermac

    Say what you want about Forest. I will watch this show because he will be the star. For so many years I have had to watch (and enjoy) TV action/dramas with the "Super Smart white man who knows everything" Like House, Lie to Me, All of the CSIs etc... Now that we CSI with L. Fishburn and now Forest, I am a little happy. It will good to see good black actors in roles other than the second fiddle character to satisfy the NAACP.
