Looks actually very good...

    "Danteee!" "Beatriceeee!"

    by Admonisher

Dear Lord! Perhaps if I'd never read the ACTUAL Infero, that wouldn't be so hilarious! :-D

I can't find any info on this at all...

    by Bruce of all Trades

Is it worth checking out at all?

  • Jan. 22, 2010, 8:36 p.m. CST

I recommend the John Ciardi translation, by the way...

    by Admonisher

Still giggling ... although I'm sure that's not the reaction this trailer was intended to evoke. They should do "Milton's Paradise Lost" next. Just imagine ... "Adaaaaam!" "Eeeeeeve!"

  • Jan. 22, 2010, 8:45 p.m. CST

Oh, why did I even ask that?

    by Bruce of all Trades

This is supposed to be the companion to some first person shooter right? a first person shooter based on Dante's Inferno. Epic lulz.

  • Jan. 22, 2010, 8:46 p.m. CST

They should also make a FPS based on Hamlet

    by Bruce of all Trades

Starring the voice of Vin Diesel as the titular character.

To be or not to be?

    Kaboom! Not to be.

The animation chosen for the trailer does not look that sharp.

    The game isn't an FPS

    by IronSpidey

For the old nerds: It's a 3rd person action game. Like God of War.

  • Jan. 23, 2010, 2:01 a.m. CST

    That's not Dante

    by BranMakMorn

It's like the steroid version, devoid of all semblance of the classic. The Spartacus trailer was closer!

    by J-Dizzle

Basically, God of War in Hell! Oh wait....

EA throwing around the $$$ while layin off workers

...and this game isn't even out yet. I guess they think they have a winner on their hands without even knowing if it will sell. At least with the Halo Anime ... you know you have a winner.

The Dante game trailer looks fucking cool

    by DoctorZoidberg

  • Jan. 23, 2010, 4:53 a.m. CST

Yeah, and the Game demo even looks and plays better.

    by Stalkeye

This is a definite pre-order along with Bioshock 2.

EA did the same thing with DEAD SPACE

    by blackwood

DANTE'S INFERNO was developed by Visceral Games, which is the same team that did DEAD SPACE. DEAD SPACE also had an animated film tie-in released at the same time as the game. I think it's a pretty decent way of shoring up an unknown IP at launch, but I'm a nerd for game propaganda.
There is also a reissue of the Longfellow translation of Inferno coming out... with the video game box art on the cover, full colour pictures ranging from classic paintings to screen shots, and an introduction from the game's producer.
Say what you will about the very obvious license they've taken with the source material, but I find the whole thing pretty interesting - adapting a thousands-year-old poem into a video game IP.
Also, the demo is sweet and I think the game will kick some ass. Sure, GOD OF WAR clone, but GOD OF WAR is pretty great source stock for cloning so count me in.

Not even CLOSE to being like Dante

    by Jacopo

The Divine Comedy is one of the most brutal, badass, and influential works of literature in history. It's probably never going to be truly adapted to film, but this trailer gets EVERYTHING so wrong, it's hilarious! I've seen movies more like Dante ACCIDENTALLY!

  • Jan. 23, 2010, 11:04 a.m. CST

Weren't there some demons with huge cocks in the trailer?

    by Bruce of all Trades

That's "cock" as in "penis", btw.

  • Jan. 23, 2010, 1:45 p.m. CST

    thousands-year-old poem

    by BranMakMorn

People are saying what they will because the poem wasn't written a" thousand years ago" for starters. It would have been interesting if they had adapted the actual poem, not this.

  • Jan. 23, 2010, 2:49 p.m. CST

    by Larry Sellers

Beatrice as a damsel in distress. Dante kicking everyone's ass. Ridiculous. Of course they couldn't just say it was "inspired by The Inferno" and call it something else. It would be just as effective. It looks cool, I'll admit. The game too. It's just sad that they tear up the poem, repackage it with the video game art on the cover and invite people to expect uncivilized violence in the text. Dante freaks out routinely in the poem which doesn't translate at all to slicing shit up in a game or anime. It looks great but these are the same sort of liberties filmmakers routinely take with any remake or adaptation.

    Developers set out to make

    by THEoverfiend

the most brutal game they could come up with. Talk of being "vomited" into levels has me plunking down my 55 bucks. I love the poem and am super stoked fer the game and really don't give a shit about "source material". Pretty sure a literary lesson was not the intended goal of the gamemakers.

Looks like they chose the dark path of machismo...

    by BurnHollywood

Might be interesting, but if you want to read a definitive, darkly hilarious update, check out Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's INFERNO...their best collaboration, I read it three times.
And if you want to see some sweet-ass Hell imagery, check out Wayne Douglas Barlowe's site:

  • Jan. 23, 2010, 8:35 p.m. CST

    by THEoverfiend

I scored a Barlowe portfolio that tells a story along with the Hell portraits. His beasts are so amazing they are almost hypnotic...or that could be whatever demon is trying to posess you for looking at those images, whatever works

not exactly faithful, but it does look brilliant

I Wanna See A Bayonetta Anime

    by FreeBeer

Everyone should buy this game, it's awesomeness took me totally off guard, one of the coolest games I've ever played. I want a Bayonetta movie directed by Sam Raimi with Rhona Mitra or Kate Beckingsale playing the titualar heroine. Make it so!

  • Jan. 25, 2010, 5:25 a.m. CST

    I second the Bayonetta Anime

    by Stalkeye

I too never expected this game to be so fucking cool for a devil may cry ripoff.(The creator of DMC if anything plaguerized himself.)Freebeer I would go with Kate over Rhona. Rhona hasn't looked sexy since that scene in Hollowman albiet it was a rape scene. *gasps*

  • Jan. 25, 2010, 8:10 a.m. CST

    by BurnHollywood

Very cool. I'm a Barlowe fan from way back...I had a copy of his GUIDE TO EXTRATERRESTRIALS when I was a kid and read it and referenced it for my own artwork to the point that it disintegrated. Brilliantly unique artist.
I hope his designs for the Old Ones find their way into MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS whenever his HELLBOY buddy Del Toro gets to it.

    "Intended Goal of gamemakers"

    by BranMakMorn

Not a literary lesson, and not even remotely close to the source material in content are not the same things.
