Still giggling ... although I'm sure that's not the reaction this trailer was intended to evoke. They should do "Milton's Paradise Lost" next. Just imagine ... "Adaaaaam!" "Eeeeeeve!"

Yeah, but that's "based on" in a tangential way. This is "based on Dante's Inferno" and is called Dante's Inferno. I'd expect it to, you know, bare somewhat of a resemblance to Dante's Inferno, other than "guy is in hell." Why not call it "Dude Goes to Hell" and be done with it?

EA did the same thing with DEAD SPACE

    by blackwood

DANTE'S INFERNO was developed by Visceral Games, which is the same team that did DEAD SPACE. DEAD SPACE also had an animated film tie-in released at the same time as the game. I think it's a pretty decent way of shoring up an unknown IP at launch, but I'm a nerd for game propaganda. There is also a reissue of the Longfellow translation of Inferno coming out... with the video game box art on the cover, full colour pictures ranging from classic paintings to screen shots, and an introduction from the game's producer.Say what you will about the very obvious license they've taken with the source material, but I find the whole thing pretty interesting - adapting a thousands-year-old poem into a video game IP.Also, the demo is sweet and I think the game will kick some ass. Sure, GOD OF WAR clone, but GOD OF WAR is pretty great source stock for cloning so count me in.

Not even CLOSE to being like Dante

    by jacopo

The Divine Comedy is one of the most brutal, badass, and influential works of literature in history. It's probably never going to be truly adapted to film, but this trailer gets EVERYTHING so wrong, it's hilarious!

I've seen movies more like Dante ACCIDENTALLY!

    thousands-year-old poem

    by branmakmorn

People are saying what they will because the poem wasn't written a" thousand years ago" for starters. It would have been interesting if they had adapted the actual poem, not this.

    Wow

    by larry sellers

Beatrice as a damsel in distress. Dante kicking everyone's ass. Ridiculous. Of course they couldn't just say it was "inspired by The Inferno" and call it something else. It would be just as effective. It looks cool, I'll admit. The game too. It's just sad that they tear up the poem, repackage it with the video game art on the cover and invite people to expect uncivilized violence in the text. Dante freaks out routinely in the poem which doesn't translate at all to slicing shit up in a game or anime. It looks great but these are the same sort of liberties filmmakers routinely take with any remake or adaptation.

    by theoverfiend

the most brutal game they could come up with. Talk of being "vomited" into levels has me plunking down my 55 bucks. I love the poem and am super stoked fer the game and really don't give a shit about "source material". Pretty sure a literary lesson was not the intended goal of the gamemakers.

Demo was fun, but is a God of War clone

    by lv_426

It is blatantly a God of War clone, but if you like the God of War series, you'll probably like Dante's Inferno as well.At this point though, with Mass Effect 2 and Aliens vs. Predator hitting PS3/360 in the coming weeks, I'll be busy enough with those instead.

Might be interesting, but if you want to read a definitive, darkly hilarious update, check out Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's INFERNO...their best collaboration, I read it three times.
And if you want to see some sweet-ass Hell imagery, check out Wayne Douglas Barlowe's site:

Everyone should buy this game, it's awesomeness took me totally off guard, one of the coolest games I've ever played. I want a Bayonetta movie directed by Sam Raimi with Rhona Mitra or Kate Beckingsale playing the titualar heroine. Make it so!

I too never expected this game to be so fucking cool for a devil may cry ripoff.(The creator of DMC if anything plaguerized himself.)Freebeer I would go with Kate over Rhona. Rhona hasn't looked sexy since that scene in Hollowman albiet it was a rape scene. *gasps*

Very cool. I'm a Barlowe fan from way back...I had a copy of his GUIDE TO EXTRATERRESTRIALS when I was a kid and read it and referenced it for my own artwork to the point that it disintegrated. Brilliantly unique artist.
I hope his designs for the Old Ones find their way into MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS whenever his HELLBOY buddy Del Toro gets to it.

Not a literary lesson, and not even remotely close to the source material in content are not the same things.
