As THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O’BRIEN Ends, Fox Execs Are Confident 60% To 70% Of Affiliates Can Clear New Coco??

Published at:  Jan 23, 2010 11:22:07 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

With Conan O’Brien free since 3 a.m. Thursday to pursue a new show launching as early as Sept. 1, a source with “knowledge of the situation” tells Bloomberg.com 60 to 70 percent of Fox affiliates would be free to carry an O’Brien series.

O’Brien would then be able to expand his clearance as Fox affiliate contracts with syndicated programming suppliers expire.

Fox entertainment boss Kevin Reilly indicated Jan. 11 that the network was interested in O’Brien, but was waiting to see how the host’s situation with NBC would be resolved.

Fox has been trying to launch a successful late-night franchise as early as “The Late Show With Joan Rivers” (1986-87) and “The Wilton North Report” (1987-1988) and as recently as “The Chevy Chase Show” (1993), “The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show” (1997-1998) and “Talkshow With Spike Feresten” (2006-2009). Syndicated late-night offerings “The Aresenio Hall Show” (1989-1994) and “The Magic Hour” (1998) also ran on numerous Fox affiliates.

As Fox contemplates an alliance with O’Brien, The Hollywood Reporter suggests a number of cable outlets, among them FX, USA, TNT/TBS, Comedy Central, HBO and Showtime, also seem to be exploring the idea of bringing O’Brien aboard.

O'Brien nearly doubled Jay Leno's audience Thursday's night, according to the Reporter:

2.6 O'BRIEN
1.4 LENO
1.2 NIGHTLINE
1.0 FALLON
0.9 LETTERMAN
0.6 KIMMEL
0.5 FERGUSON

Wednesday figures:

2.0 O'BRIEN
1.5 LENO
1.2 NIGHTLINE
1.1 LETTERMAN
0.8 FALLON
0.6 KIMMEL
0.6 FERGUSON

The last new episode of “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien,” featuring guests Tom Hanks, Neil Young, Will Ferrell and likely others, airs 11:35 tonight on NBC.

"Jay isn't leaving."

The best thing that could come out of this situation is Conan's show RAPES Leno in the ratings. I believe the pot has been stirred enough that people will tune into Conan when he returns. Leno's reputation has been shot to shit in my mind, but I know the lemmings of America will sadly still tune into his shitty show. I hope NBC realizes what a major fuck up they accomplished, and Jeff Fucker gets his stupid ass fired.

I'm Team Conan all the way, but FOX worries me. Comedy Central sounds perfect but... when would the show air? I would not suggest moving The Daily Show/Colbert Report, so that would have Conan on in primetime or after 12. I just hope that the show is energetic and fun and goofy like Late Night was and the past week of Tonight Show has been.

    by dapper swindler

Anyone smart enough to appreciate Conan (and you don't have to be all that smart) was smart enough to have something better to do at night than watch tv. That's why Leno has high ratings. Boring married people watch him just to have something on. Boring married people watching boring Jay. Do you think Jay's fans would have rallies? No, Jay has viewers but he doesn't have any fans. Like all entertainment of high quality, Conan does not have that bland universal appeal.

    by redjester

The Masturbating Bear, Triumph, and In the Year 3000 have all run their courses. Granted they're all still very funny, but there's something about them that feels tired and old. Conando is one of the half dozen IP's though that I truly feel Conan could use to great effect and success on his to be determined new show. Hopefully he can get the rights to that...

I have a theory that if Fallon was completely unknown when he started Late Night then you guys would love him. He's very genuine and endearing. But I guess he built up so much ire from his pre-Late Night days. But Jimmy does do something that neither Conan nor any other talk show host ever does - he comes across very authentic. He seems to actually be interested in his guests and reveals things about himself and the world that he is genuinely excited about - almost to a fault, like he's not being professional enough. Still his bits are usually not very funny and the obvious pandering to the young crowd is annoying.

And although it would be cool to see Letterman on the show, I don't see him wanting to go to that length to promote a show that will (once Conan goes back on the air) be competing with him. It's not a smart move for him in the long run... Although it might win him some viewers until September.

    by ninjarap

Leno has said repeatedly that he doesn't want to do the show past the age that Johnny did it, and that he can't see himself doing the show well into his 60s. Leno is now 60 years old. If they're lucky, NBC will get another 5 or 6 years out of him. And NBC now has no heir apparent to take his place. I suspect The Tonight Show franchise could be killed by this debacle once Leno leaves.

He doesn't want his old show back, because NBC fucking burned his ass huge.

I can't imagine his Fox show doing well ratings-wise unless it starts at 11, which it won't because local news is big money to affilates. He will see an initial boost in ratings when his new show starts, but it will die down. It seems his fans (and I love Conan), can't be counted on to watch on a regularly. Yes he's had a huge rally of support and I would love to see him crush Jay Leno, but I think Fox affilates will rather air Seinfeld reruns as they make a higher profit off it.

He needs to go to HBO where the income isn't dependent on ratings. It would just be a better show too unrestricted.

    Comedy Central?

    by mraig

Conan turned down a high NBC salary and a continuing gig hosting the Tonight Show if it meant starting at 12. I'm sure Comedy Central couldn't pay him what NBC was, he'd have lower viewership, and he'd still be on at 12 (unless they moved the Daily Show and Colbert Report, which seems crazy--they're CC staples).

Why are we all assuming Conan's going to copy the Tonight Show/Late Show format exactly on another network, and host yet another clone of Leno/Letterman/Kimmel's shows? What's obvious is that the late night format is dying. It was created for and thrived in a world with three networks, no DVRs, no internet. The giants of the format (e.g. Johnny Carson) had personalities that don't exist in the world of show business today, and they spoke to a kind of audience with a very different sense of humor.

I'd be interested in Conan starting a completely new project altogether. This is one of the writers that made the Simpsons into what it was at its best, remember. How about Conan creates, writes for, and executive produces a smart, funny, different HBO comedy? Like Larry David did when Seinfeld ended--instead of retreading old ground, he made a different kind of show--10/12 episodes a year, no censorship, no commercials, new season as often as he felt like it. This is the kind of move I'd like to see Conan make, if he wants to do something that feels 21st century instead of 20th. We don't need a fourth network 12:35 talk show--how many people would really watch it?

Even though I loath Leno, his audience will return and he will be very successful once again. I as much as anyone wish that Conan will be as successful, but I fear that he will not recover from this debacle anytime soon. His safest choice is to sign on with Fox, despite that networks problems keeping their best offerings running, especially considering their failed late night attempts. Conan has seen failure time and again as a producer on a few sitcoms, and I fear if he were to go that route again he would suffer as he has before. He's always had the geek following, but sadly he needs that middle America demo to keep him above water. I am pessimistic for the future. We should all pray I am wrong.

    Those numbers mean nothing Herc

    by moviegimp

He will get huge numbers, tonight he might break 3 or 4 but it's just out of curiosity. I'm flipping between Dave and Conan and Jimmy K but won't care about them once this is over.

I noticed during your long Leno deathwatch you failed to ever show Dave and Conan's number since they were lower most of the time. That crap about Leno giving him lower numbers is crap. Leno got the same numbers he had at 11:35. Conan had no problem with them then but all of a sudden it's Jay's fault for his bad numbers. It's always been that Conan's fans can't be troubled to watch tv at the time the show is on. It may change in the future but right now, you don't watch you don't get rating, you get canceled.

Yes Jay was canceled. Not because he didn't have the numbers but because some affiliates with a bad news program couldn't get people to watch them unless they were already watching the show before. There were about five million people watching Jay and only one or two million watching Conan. He failed on his own.

    Oh yeah, TEAM JAY!

    NBC killed the Tonight Show

    by jubs

Get the fuck out of here with that "Conan killed the Tonight Show" bullshit. Conan was hosting a late night program on a last place network, he received zero support from NBC, and had a horrible lead-in with Leno. NBC is to blame here, with Jay receiving a fair portion of that blame.

Comparing Leno and Conan's ratings would be fairly misleading. A hell of a lot more people are awake at 10 than 11:35.
The real question is: did Conan have low ratings because of his weak Leno lead-in, or was it something else?

conan is more suited for comedy central or hbo. fox has a terrible track record for talk shows. sadly the only reason his ratings improved is b/c of the controversy with nbc. he's a fad right now, which sucks b/c he's the funniest of all the late night hosts. where were all these "fans" when ratings were slipping? he'll be more appreciated on cc or hbo. abc could always change their minds and put him as a lead in for jimmy kimmel which would boost kimmel's ratings.

NBC already fucked him over and now they want to make sure Conan can't have a show for another 7 months? So, let's summarize the results of all of NBC's actions:

    by kevred

NBC starting position: Johnny Carson on very popular Tonight Show. David Letterman on very popular Late Night. No real competition.
Step 1: Carson out. Piss off long-time NBC employee Letterman by hiring Jay Leno.
Step 2: Letterman leaves NBC and becomes very successful rival.
Step 3: Hire oddball comic Conan O'Brien. Over time, becomes very successful in time slot.
Step 4: Piss off long-time employee Jay Leno, at the peak of his success, by questioning his potential and promising his show to O'Brien.
Step 5: Kick out Leno, put O'Brien in his spot, hire marginal talent Jimmy Fallon, and give Leno an awkward, unusual placement earlier in the evening doing the same thing O'Brien's doing.
Step 6: Realize you've screwed everything up, piss off long-time employee O'Brien. O'Brien leaves network, soon to become highly-successful rival.
(Step 7: Try not to think about having paid $40 million and given up Conan for the privilege of having Jimmy Fallon host Late Night.)
IN SUMMARY: NBC had Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Conan O'Brien all happily on their roster. NBC had the top-rated late-night talk shows throughout this entire period. And, without any real external competition, managed to lose Carson, Letterman, and O'Brien, jerking around and disrespecting all three of them, plus Leno, to varying degrees. All without any real external pressures or competitive issues forcing their hand. It's pretty breathtaking, really.

    I watched Conan sporadically -

    by buffywrestling

even less when the Daily Show/Colbert hour started. I was there for his first show as the Tonight Show host and continued to watch him on & off. Why wasn't I a regular viewer; watching him every night? Because it's THE TONIGHT SHOW! I used to watch it with my grandparents when I slept over at there house when I was a wee baby! That shit ain't going no where - no matter the host.

However...seven months? If I knew Conan was only going to get 7 months as the Tonight Show host I would have been there every night. Because comedy - while subjective to each individual tastes - should not just be sexual innuendo. And Leno & his staff went to that well too many times in relation to others hosts, imo. More than half of his monolouges were insipid *wink, wink* jokes. It got tedious.

Personally for me, the tipping point was the WGA strike. Leno scabbed himself out and justified it by using his staff as a cover. Portrayed himself as a victim when it's blatantly obvious he is a Company Man through & through. And he's doing it again.

Conan was on fire during the strike and is on fire now. A subversive streak a mile fucking wide. In this type of multi-media enviorment, it's what you need to do to make your mark. Towing the company line might make for good business but creatively, it will kill your soul. That's Leno in a nutshell.

And it's not just 95% of AICN that is on Conan's side. It's 95% of his on-air & off-air peers. Not just the 95% of us angry virgins but people who make the decisions of what to air. You're blind if you think that doesn't matter.

I'll set DVR to CONAN no matter where he lands:

    by tomonicker

Yes, I didn't watch him a 100% anymore- blame finally having cable, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and having a DVR. I DVR'd Conan's Tonight Show a 100%, but I watched only when I had the time or was interested in the guest. For me, the Tonight Show was the wrong direction for Conan artistically, while on the other hand, I was glad to have Andy back, etc. You know I even watched Jay's new show a bit when it first aired; it was unbearably bad. I had to explain the situation to a friend who doesn't give a rat's ass about late night, and they said, " So they basically had the Tonight Show on BEFORE the Tonight Show? That's retarded. " So, Conan was screwed many ways in this fucking deal. FOX is not my ideal home for Conan but I'd understand if it was the only viable option for now. Jay's dead to me; you may say he played it the right way for him, but I think he could have gotten what he wanted forthwright, honorably. And I had no idea that he had hid in closets spying on execs during the first Tonight Show Debacle til recently, I hadn't read the Late Shift Book or seen that movie. RIP>Tonight Show< Long live CoCo! Tho, really, he seems to hate that nick. LOL!

The only reason you appeal to more people is because you have an innocent "safe" but fucking lame-ass boring way about you. Rather than people appealing to a more edgier, brand of comedy like Letterman and Conan.

Just because more people watched your show doesn't mean your show is better. All the Leno heads I know are just trying to relax at that time of night. They don't want to think or use their brain. They want to see a show that is predictable and dull. That's what the older crowd wants.

    by buffywrestling

    Conan's speech :

"Before we end this rodeo, a few things need to be said. There has been a lot of speculation in the press about what I legally can and can't say about NBC. To set the record straight, tonight I am allowed to say anything I want. And what I want to say is this: between my time at Saturday Night Live, The Late Night Show, and my brief run here on The Tonight Show, I have worked with NBC for over twenty years. Yes, we have our differences right now and yes, we're going to go our separate ways. But this company has been my home for most of my adult life. I am enormously proud of the work we have done together, and I want to thank NBC for making it all possible.

Walking away from The Tonight Show is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Making this choice has been enormously difficult. This is the best job in the world, I absolutely love doing it, and I have the best staff and crew in the history of the medium. But despite this sense of loss, I really feel this should be a happy moment. Every comedian dreams of hosting The Tonight Show and, for seven months, I got to. I did it my way, with people I love, and I do not regret a second. I've had more good fortune than anyone I know and if our next gig is doing a show in a 7-11 parking lot, we'll find a way to make it fun.

And finally, I have to say something to our fans. The massive outpouring of support and passion from so many people has been overwhelming. The rallies, the signs, all the goofy, outrageous creativity on the internet, and the fact that people have traveled long distances and camped out all night in the pouring rain to be in our audience, made a sad situation joyous and inspirational.

To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I'll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen. As proof, let’s make an amazing thing happen right now. Here to close out our show, are a few good friends, led by Mr. Will Ferrell…"

Late night breakdown - what is your order - best to worst

    by rectalblowout

Letterman - Great band. Yeah I know Paul is annoying sometimes repeating Dave, but the band is awesome. The show has a great production. Looks great. And Alan Kalter is hilarious, and Biff. Love his skits. Remember the old one with "Flunky the Clown"? Dave isn't as spunky as he was on NBC, but it's still the best overall show.

Conan - Decent band. Conan has some great edgy jokes. Love the quick head shots of Max or LaBamba with the frozen, serious look. Conan has some great writers that perform skits on the show. Mainly the old show. Brian Stack, and my favorite Brian McCann, ("No Reason to Live"-guy, S&M Abe Lincoln, Late Night Sausage Party -voice). And I miss Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage, etc.

Ferguson - Is an excellent host. But I don't care for his show so much. The biggest complaint people have about Ferguson is his long monologues. I personally think he needs the big production and whip-ass band. Might be cliche to be like the others more, but I think it would work for Ferguson.

Kimmel - he's decent, but I hate Guillermo and Uncle Frank. They are just boring. I do like Kimmel's skit where they bleep out innocent words from celebrites to make them sound dirty. And I like his Live concert series.

Leno - I like his monologue and that is it. Jay is a stand-up comedian. THAT"S IT! He's a lousy interviewer. All he does is gawk at the women. I hate ALL his skits. His stupid game show crap and street shit is just finding people that are stupid so the rest of us can laugh at them. I FUCKING HATE his band. God, they are so fucking annoying. Smitty rim shots every other joke and the band riffs a few notes to the other jokes. Then going to and from commercials you hear that chick howling her annoying voice and clapping.

Fallon - Great production, awesome band. Some funny skits, some retarded. But Fallon's biggest problem is he is horrible at doing the monologue. That's why it's so short. The other thing I hate is he laughs at everything trying to trick us that the show is funny or that it is clicking, when it's not funny and not clicking. He still has a chance to someday become an ok host. I might move Leno below Fallon.

    Daly - VOMIT!

    Moff's Law

    by buffywrestling

    http://tinyurl.com/ydkv8oh

"Of all the varieties of irritating comment out there, the absolute most annoying has to be “Why can’t you just watch the movie for what it is??? Why can’t you just enjoy it? Why do you have to analyze it???”

If you have posted such a comment, or if you are about to post such a comment, here or anywhere else, let me just advise you: Shut up. Shut the fuck up. Shut your goddamn fucking mouth. SHUT. UP.

First of all, when we analyze art, when we look for deeper meaning in it, we are enjoying it for what it is. Because that is one of the things about art, be it highbrow, lowbrow, mainstream, or avant-garde: Some sort of thought went into its making — even if the thought was, “I’m going to do this as thoughtlessly as possible”! — and as a result, some sort of thought can be gotten from its reception. That is why, among other things, artists (including, for instance, James Cameron) really like to talk about their work.
Now, that doesn’t mean you have to think about a work of art. I don’t know anyone who thinks every work they encounter ought to only be enjoyed through conscious, active analysis — or if I do, they’re pretty annoying themselves. And I know many people who prefer not to think about much of what they consume, and with them I have no argument. I also have no argument with people who disagree with another person’s thoughts about a work of art. That should go without saying. Finally, this should also go without saying, but since it apparently doesn’t: Believe me, the person who is annoying you so much by thinking about the art? They have already considered your revolutionary “just enjoy it” strategy, because it is not actually revolutionary at all. It is the default state for most of humanity.

So when you go out of your way to suggest that people should be thinking less — that not using one’s capacity for reason is an admirable position to take, and one that should be actively advocated — you are not saying anything particularly intelligent. And unless you live on a parallel version of Earth where too many people are thinking too deeply and critically about the world around them and what’s going on in their own heads, you’re not helping anything; on the contrary, you’re acting as an advocate for entropy.

And most annoyingly of all, you’re contributing to the fucking conversation yourselves when you make your stupid, stupid comments. You are basically saying, “I think people shouldn’t think so much and share their thoughts, that’s my thought that I have to share.” If you really think people should just enjoy the movie without thinking about it, then why the fuck did you (1) click on the post in the first place, and (2) bother to leave a comment? If it bugs you so much, GO WATCH A GODDAMN FUNNY CAT VIDEO."

    Yur face. Imz init.

They're going to contract the late-night programming down to Leno and Fallon and whore out the 1:30 slot to syndication or infomercials. Leno saved them multi-millions developing a new 1-hour program to air at 10pm. Conan's buyout is a big hit, but less than it would have been over time. When Leno retires, they'll shoehorn Fallon or Andy Samberg into the Tonight Show for as low an offer as possible, knowing that late night TV will soon be dead as we move towards an on-demand world.

They went with the demographic that never was able to program the VCR and leaves the TV in the bedroom on NBC all the time because they don't want to fiddle with the remote in the dark. Conan's audience is going to live another 50 years, therefore NBC would be in a pickle if they decided to cancel a Conan O'Brien Tonight Show 10 years from now. Granted, I'm giving the NBC braintrust WAY too much credit. They just might be stupidly burning bridges to save their own jobs by pointing to Conan's initial ratings without adding the small but important fact that it was Leno's pathetic lead-in which was murdering their ratings.

I wouldn't base all of Conan's "edginess" off of an appearance by the Masturbating Bear--and, by the way, yes, that small bit IS edgy, even in its simplicity, when you compare it to the other "safe" and "tame" jokes that the rest of the late-night hosts dish out--Conan's genius comes in daring to REMAIN in awkward timing, mocking himself and making HIMSELF a character in his own show, and completely WILLING to make himself look a fool if necessary. He's able to segue from that kind of idiocy and then into a moment of cerebral commentary on Nietzche or Pavlov that, quite honestly, most people aren't up on, but those who DO get it laugh harder b/c they find it surprising that he suddenly started talking about that--and then, in the next breath, he'll joke about Andy Richter pleasuring himself behind that podium he hides behind, moving from something pseudo-intelligent to simply stupid. Then, once the guests come out, Conan and his guests usually find some VERY UNUSUAL but FUNNY rapport--if the improvised bit fails and falls on its head, Conan usually seamlessly makes it even FUNNIER BECAUSE it failed. I think Leno is okay, but he exhibits NONE of these skills, and is never daring enough to put himself out there like Conan. So, yes, like him or not, compared to the rest, Conan IS edgy. He might not be yelling "motherfucker" and "eat my cock", b/c he couldn't do that and expect to keep any kind of job, but the guy DOES dare. Anyways...we're all just floating...

What moron would hire Conan now?

    by dundermifflinintern

News to kids out there, when you go into a job interview, do not just discuss how much you hate your old boss.

Why the hell would Fox hire Conan now? They know that if they ever fire him he's just going to bash them and his idiot followers who don't bother to watch his show will not shut up about how unfair they're being. I don't know how real that Bugati stunt was(saw it on Youtube) but if I were an NBC shareholder I'd want Conan banned from ever appearing on the network EVER. If I were a Fox shareholder I'd certainly never want to give him a job, unless they give him the kind of contract that lets them fire him at their leisure and censor him as they see fit.

I think Conan on Late Night was funnier than Leno or Letterman, for the record. But I also would rather have watched Tim and Eric than all of them. That doesn't mean I think NBC is stupid for not having Tim and Eric host the Tonight Show. Sorry Conan, you've been on for more than a decade, you sealed your fate when you couldn't find an audience in your first month. Jimmy Fallon and other newbies I can understand they need to grow in their roles and find their own audiences because they haven't been doing this sort of thing for decades. Conan has, he wasn't going to get any better or get any more viewers absent this controversy.

Conana also eluded to this on his last episode when tom hanks mentioned "cbs studios" and Conan replied "it sounds like a great network"People laugh at my scoops but they always turn out tru and this one isn't different, Conan O'brien is taking over the late show whn letterman retires at the end of the summer

Sad to see Andy didn't get his farewell (I mean, who's to say he or Max or anyone is following Conan wherever he goes?), and I really, really expected Conan to give his speech from a stool, a la Jack Paar and Johnny Carson. Then again, that'd be a tad gimmicky for Conan.

That said, Conan's call for us to abandon cynicism (considering much of his Gen-X/Y/Millennial audience can be cynical in the extreme) did not fall on deaf ears. I've gotta say, Conan struck a chord with that one.

When in the history of these "finale" things has the host's future been so in doubt? The last Late Night with Conan was a bit of a muted affair, given that we all knew where he was landing next. With his future so in doubt, this was quite the evening. I'm still skeptical that this Fox gig is going to turn out.

And no, to answer Sherm's earlier question, I've always viewed Hanks as a dependable, inoffensive, middle-of-the-road, baby boomer-type (much like Jay Leno). It's only been recently that I've clued in to the fact that he's rather amusing.

There has been a few Tonight show farewells, the most shocking was probabaly Jack Parr, when he walked off set in anger (i can rmember pleading with him to come back..it took me a month to convince him). But that was a great farewell, alot better then Leno, Jay's didn't feel sincere enough, Conan had class and took the high road by not insulting the network, but rather remembering the good times from the last 20 years. Can't wait untill conan takes over for dave later this year and crushes Leno in the ratings

    Classy ending

    by volstaff

The final number was kinda lame until Ferrell got out the cowbell. I was kinda hoping to see Christopher Walkin stroll past the camera or something.
Conan's goodbye speech was everything Leno's pov speech wasn't, Conan's was sincere, heartfelt and gave me the sense that this is a really nice guy. Leno's rung about as fake as most of Hollywood, and also made me think of when Johny died, the ratings grab "tribute" show Leno did compared to the sincere heartfelt show Dave did about Johny using jokes the guy had written and sent to Dave over the years.I can't remember the name of the song Doc Severinson played at the end but man I remember thinking that was one of the saddest songs I'd ever heard, and tearing up.
Honestly after tonight ( aww hell this whole week!) I just don't think I can stand to watch The Tonight Show with Leno ever again.
At the end of the day, I guess it all seems pretty fucking trivial moaning about these millionaire guys with their deals, but with all that's going on in the world, we need to find reasons to laugh. I can say that Conan has made me laugh out loud at my tv more times than I can count.
These last two weeks have been some of the worst I've had in my adult life. My mother suffered a stroke and we don't know what's going to happen with her, how much she's going to recover. But still I turned on the tv and goddammit Conan made me laugh anyway, and it felt pretty damn good.I'm going to miss him.

Jon Stewart's original Late Night Show

    by happy boy

Started on MTV then syndication. Everyone too young to remember that? That was a fucking awesome show. Steward was a genius at interviews because he is such a wise ass. Plus this was concurrent with the start of Seinfeld and like Seinfeld Stewart had the whole, "hi there I'm a Jew" thing going which was totally new for late night. Can the rest of you emo-generation maudlin crybabies grow up. Seriously every event it "soooooooooooooooooooooooooo important isn't it you hypocrites." Conan was on for 7 months, there wasn't this much crying when Carson went off the air. Conan will be on air in a year and all you people will be crying about something else, dont worry. Everyone on Late Night is basically channeling a portion of Dave's show from the 80s anyways: Conan has Dave's irreverence, Ferguson has Dave's old fuck you, cant believe you're actually watching this show. Kimmel has Dave's snarkiness and mocking towards his guests. Fallon has Dave's nervous young energy. Late night actually in good shape. The only guy who isn't ripping off the old Letterman Late Night show is Letterman who doesn't care enough to even try and is mailing it in. And Leno... who knows what the fuck Leno is doing save pimping the network and cashing a paycheck

Leno should have just stepped aside and let Conan keep the show - or at least not got involved. It's not like he needs the money. He seemed like a much different person back then...as I recall, he even used to wear a leather jacket on his show...no suit. He reminded me of Dennis Leary. That said, I didn't like his show. He had some funny moments, but The Daily Show is leaps and bounds better...the main reason being, Stewart isn't very good at interviewing celebrities...he kisses their ass too much...he's much better interviewing writers or political figures. The only interview that sticks out in my mind from that show (because it was the point I stopped watching him) was when he interviewed Robert Conrad who bragged that he was trained in martial arts by Bruce Lee, and then Jon asked him if he could of kicked Bruce Lee's ass back then, to which he bragged "Yes"...to the applause of Jon and the audience as they pissed on Bruce Lee's grave.

For all of those that are trashing Conan's ratings. They weren't that bad. His show started in the summer which is the worst time for late night. NBC never promoted it when Leno started and they were competing against each other for guests.

The only thing NBC has accomplished is fragmenting late night for the second time.

. . .Compared to 'Big Jaw' Leno who has no class. I won't go over it again, cause so many post have covered it, but he should have just stayed out of it. KARMA is a BITCH LENO! and soon enough you'll feel the wrath! Big Jaw won't get the same ratings he had before, and already a number of actors said they won't appear on the Tonight Show.
Even though this backstabbing bullshit goes on in industry every hour, it was nice to have a large spotlight on it for the general public. However, that same general public will forget about it in a week, or until some pseudo celebrity changes their hairstyle. ahhh America!

Anyway, THE WORLD IS YOURS COCO!

Conan's finale scored over 40% higher than Leno's finale

    by american mythos

This just in from the douchey website tvbythenumbers.com:

Conan’s last turn as host of The Tonight Show garnered a 4.8 rating with adults 18-49 in the 25 local markets with Nielsen people meters.

If those numbers hold up, not only is it a series high with adults 18-49 it’s 85% higher than the previous series high set Thursday night (2.6 rating), it’s over 40 percent better than the 3.4 rating with adults 18-49 Jay Leno got in his not-so-final Tonight Show after all on May 29. Leno’s not-so-final episode also scored nearly 12 million viewers. Viewer numbers for last night’s episode won’t be available until late next week.

Not only was it better than all the late night and primetime competition on Friday — not really a huge feat with most networks broadcasting the Hope for Haiti Now benefit between 8p-10p, it was also a better 18-49 rating than any show got on Thursday night.

Update: the previous series high, at least in final numbers (again the numbers above are preliminary) was a 3.8 rating with adults 18-49 for Conan’s Tonight Show premiere last June.

    End.

Conan went out with a bang.

    Leno cost affiliates 22 Million

    by tigger11

Reality has a schism with several on this thread. Leno's show has done so poorly at 10 it shows up not just 4th or 5th place, but 7th or 8th place on its timeslot. It was costing the affiliates millions as a leadin to the local news, thats why it was pulled, and when they decided to pull it, they first wanted to move the tonight show, and then just decided to give Leno back his show. The affiliates were asking for a better leadin to news then Lenos pathetic show, but you think its all about Lenos numbers during his 17th season being bigger then Conan during his 1st, something I have yet to see a complaint about from any of the affiliates.

I dont know where you are getting your number but it has nothing to do with the point here. The affiliates (ie all those tv stations that show NBC shows) told NBC to rid of Lenos show, because it was costing the affiliates millions of dollars in lost revenue as a lead in to the 11 PM news. Read the press release from NBC about Lenos show going away. Noone was asking for Conan to be replaced except Jay once he couldnt have his 10PM show.

    by darth_kaos

For explaining to Coughlins Law about the real reason. Let me explain more on what you started. It all started with the failure of 'Big Jaw's' 10pm show (BTW- was a stupid idea anyway). The lack of primetime dramas caused a decline in local affiliates, which then carried over to the local news, in turn carried over to 'The Tonight Show'. 'A RIPPLE EFFECT'. If that stupid 10pm show wasn't there, Conan's Tonight show would have had stronger ratings, without a doubt! So it's unfair to compare the 'numbers', if they didn't have the same advantages.
People support Conan, because, not only is he funnier than Big Jaw, but the way they treated him (and his show) was unfair. They should have never offered him the show, let alone push Big Jaw out a show he would have died doing. It was a douche thing to do, and believe me, NBC will pay for it in the long run. BTW- I'm amazed that Jeff Zucker (the fucker) still has a job. I think they're waiting to see if this switch back works or not I guess. And why should they? He's done a bang up job running the network, so far. fuckin' idiots! They deserve him.
As for Coughlins Law, it just goes to show you how people just react when they don't have all the facts.

Fox does have a history of taking chances and giving their talent a bit of leeway: The Simpsons, Family Guy, King Of The Hill, etc. Hell, you could even argue that Married With Children is an example of a network letting the talent get away with murder.

    by captzeep

He does not really have the sense of humor for a mainstream show. I don't think people appreciate how much Johnny Carson meant to the entertainment culture. He did a show everybody could watch but still brought in edgy new talent. Jay Leno was never going to fill his shoes but he is closer to what most people want to see in that type of role. Letterman stopped being funny 20 years ago. Craig Kilbourne did a good show but he was definitely a 12:35 guy.

    by burnednotice_dude

Those never mattered to me. What I always respected was the amount of class that an individual(s) has to offer in the end. The way I see it Conan wins hands down. This would be followed by Leno with NBC stuck at the bottom (again). I don't have a freaking clue about what was in the contracts or who said what or who gets what. I never watched either one much. To me it boils down to integrity. Something the 2nd and 3rd place people lacked.

    by vern

I don't understand these people who are obsessed with box office and Nielsen ratings. If the biggest moneymaker or most seen is always what you want then I'm sure your favorite food is 7-11 hot dogs. Don't you have any personal interests or tastes, or do you decide everything by popular vote and mathematical formula?
It's not surprising if Leno (at some point) got higher ratings. Conan's version of the Tonight Show refused to compromise his comedic voice, and to me was really funny and charming because of that. Leno's was designed to be bland and middlebrow and to make dumb people feel smart by picking on other dumb people in that smarmy "Jay Walking" bullshit. Personally I don't think it's funny at all and he has always rubbed me the wrong way. That's fine if it's more popular (mostly, I suspect, among people who leave the TV on after the news - and who the fuck watches the local news, anyway?), but that doesn't make it better.
Which show is better is beside the point here, though. The reason why this situation is upsetting has more to do with honor. Conan sacrificed himself, putting his love of The Tonight Show name over his own career and dream job. He could've stayed as the host of the Tonight Show and let Leno still have a failed half hour show before him, but he wouldn't participate in using the name "The Tonight Show" for a show that comes on after midnight, so he became a conscientious objector. He's operating under a code of honor.
Leno on the other hand chose to go back on everything he's been saying publicly for 5 years... seeming to be classy first in his announcement that Conan was taking over, then in his final show and passing of the torch. He's also going along with NBC doing to Conan exactly what he publicly complained about them considering doing to him back when they almost dumped him for Letterman. They come to him and say "Hey Jay, we want to move the Tonight Show to 12 but Conan says it will destroy the franchise, so we're just gonna dump him and put you back in your old job that you pretended to retire from, okay?" And he says yes to that? He pretends like he had no option of saying, "uh, I feel a little uncomfortable with that."
It's just a case where one guy chooses to do the honorable thing, sacrificing himself, so of course you're gonna root against the scumbag weasel who just shrugs and takes all the benefits from it. Leno didn't instigate it, but a person with human dignity or any class at all would have to say no to that deal. He is a rat, he will have to live with that. He signed the "I am a rat" contract.

It wasn't just the Tonight Show that NBC screwed

    by goody2shoes

I was working on an NBC series when word came down that Leno was coming back to primetime, taking one of the 10pm slots our show was supposed to have. Now, I personally didn't think the show would make it past the first season anyway (which is why I'm not naming it), but it was intriguing enough to have a shot. Till they put us on opposite Desperate Housewives. We were long done by the time the first episode aired, but knowing we'd be in that timeslot pretty much gave us the green light to raid the office supplies before we left. Now, they sunk a TON of money into this show which makes me wonder what their accountants think when they go through the books every year, "And what about this show?" "Oh, we just wanted to see what would happen if we burned $2mil a week, but someone thought we should make a show instead. Turns out burning the money would've been more fun. We're losing so much anyway, people might have actually tuned in to watch that!" Geniuses.

Having been a longtime fan of Conan's, last night reminded me why he was my favorite host. That was pure class all the way.

Conan's got class, while Leno's an ass

    by maverick2484

Its all pretty much been said by now, but, nevertheless:

    1) This is not about Conan's ratings and it was never about Conan's ratings. If Leno had succeeded at 10 pm, this talkback wouldn't exist.

    2) Lets accept that Leno's scheduled "retirement" was indeed an unwanted retirement, and that he was just putting on a brave public face in pretending to be okay with it. After losing the Tonight Show he basically had 3 options: 1) go to 10 pm, b) go to ABC, c) actually retire. He chose 10 pm, and he failed. He could still have gone to another network after he was cancelled, or he could have retired in order to give Conan the same chance to succeed that he once was given. Instead, Leno chose to literally take Conan's job (make no mistake, performing at 11:35 was part of Conan's job). This is why Leno is absolutely at fault in this situation. Leno evidently regrets his decision to go along with the succession plan in 2004, but rather than take responsibility for his bad decision, he made Conan pay for it. Although it was NBC that set events into motion, it was Leno who facilitated the entire process. Leno and Leno alone had the power to grind the process to a halt by saying "no". As Vern said, he just shrugged his shoulders and said "yes".

    3) Leno has said that he took the Tonight Show back in order keep his staff working. That's absolute nonsense. Unless Leno plans on living forever, his show will end eventually, and his staff will move on. Every show ends, that's simply a fact of showbusiness. Will Leno show the same concern for his staff in 5 years when he's 65 and feeling worn out by 5 shows a week? My guess is, probably not.

Last night's finale was incredibly touching. Conan's comments about cynicism hit me right in the gut, and frankly, I'm still thinking about them today. But it was interesting to note that, amidst all the emotion, Conan managed to say some kind words about NBC, but said absolutely nothing about Leno. No, "look, Leno's a nice guy", no "Leno will do a great job again", nothing. Because Conan knows that Leno is truly the bad guy in this situation.

NBC is a network, and throughout this process, they have behaved like a network. Networks care about profits; they make no claim to having integrity. What NBC did was slimey, but it was no slimier than what they once tried to do to Leno himself. They didn't want to bet on Conan in a head-to-head fight at 11:30 with Leno on another network, and they were willing to fire Conan to avoid it. Leno is a different story. He's an amazingly wealthy and accomplished performer, and yet he was still willing to undercut a fellow performer who had paid his dues and never done anything to spite him. The sheer callousness of that is astounding. I'd love nothing more than to see Letterman retire early so that he can give the Late Show to Conan, but it's more likely that he'll end up on Fox. I can't wait to see what he'll do next, because I know it'll be great. I know that, because people tend to get what they deserve. That goes for both Conan and Leno.

Conan should inherit Thee Lat Show...

    by thomasjarvis

Hate to jump on Jett's bandwagon here, but... see this quote I found online:

"Conan O'Brien always had more in common with David Letterman than Jay Leno. They selected Conan to replace Letterman on the Late Show and that is where he fit. People who watched Letterman at 11:35 could then switch to Conan at 12:35. Jay Leno's viewers probably went to sleep. Conan's success at 12:35 was probably owed more to Letterman as a lead in then Leno. When Conan switched to 11:35, Letterman's viewers could no longer tune in for both and they stayed with Letterman. Letterman won the ratings. I think there was a large overlap between Conan's and Letterman's viewers and when forced to pick between the two, they stayed with Letterman. And of course Leno's lousy 10:00 ratings also contributed to Conan's lousy ratings. If Conan goes to Fox at 11:35, he still will not be able to beat Letterman."

Alright, now think about all of that. If CoCo goes to Fox, he'll segmenting his potential audience into three portions between his own viewers, Dave's, and BigJaw's. If he takes over for Dave, he likely gets all his old viewers back, plus most of Dave's, and few who abandon the Good Ship Tonight Show.

Now Dave has gone on record that he plans to retire in a couple years. And he has been very candid about how unfairly he feels Conan has been treated. While BigJaw has joked about moving to Fox, on his final show Conan exchanged words with Hanks about how CBS Studios sounds like a "nice place". As previously mentioned, the other night Dave was announced (jokingly) as "soon to be replaced by Conan". No truth to that joke at all, hmmm?

If Dave were to woo Conan over to be his successor, how much more perfect of a joint middle finger to the suited peacocks could we all ask for?! Conan could even begin guest-hosting the show when Dave goes on vacation, to get his feel for the new studio. CoCo & staff could move back to Gotham where they obviously feel the most at home. A win-win situation for both Team CoCo and Team Letterman. Search your, heats fellow talkbackers, and deep down within you all know this to be true: its truly the only viable solution to this entire scenario. It's almost too perfect on multiple levels. And that's why it will probably never actually happen...sigh.

Shenanigans. The bun doesn't look, feel or taste like bread, the 'meat' doesn't look, feel or taste like meat. I guess the condiments are ok. You don't really notice this sort of thing in a warmer climate, when in the winter, when it's freezing cold outside, and you pull up to a drive-thru window, the moment they open that window, you get bombarded by the aroma of greasy, awesome food being cooked. KFC, Dairy Queen, Burger King, they all have their own distinct smell. Fried chicken, a mixture of icecream and deep fat friers, char broiled hamburgers etc. In the dead of winter, when you pull up to McDonalds and they open the window...you get hit with this bizarre chemical stench, that doesn't smell like anything that occurs naturally in the world. That stuff is not food, I mean that literally. It's like...20% food at the most. The rest is filler.

I hate cynicism too, but sometimes a little dose of it's healthy, it's just when it becomes your religion, you need to get out of that rut. I have very little optimism that NBC, Jay will be effectively boycotted... I simply hope that their tired products boycott themselves out. As a long time Dave fan, I chose Conan over Dave. I'm not sure I want Conan on FOX, but is Dave really ready to retire soon? I honestly only have what fellow talkbackers have said to go on. Conan did nearly 20 years at his old time slot, is he willing to backstep for a bit and WAIT for Dave to retire? I know Dave has a young family to consider but let's face it, despite differences of honor, men are defined a lot by what they do; I see Dave sticking around a lot longer. *shrugs* Magic 8-ball hasn't a clue.

    by thejudger

I know Fox wants Conan, but really that's just to many late night shows. The only successful FOX late night show was Arsenio. As everyone has said here. Dave plans to retire soon. So it would be nice to see him slip Conan into his show showhow. Like Conan Tuesdays or something like that, and then when he retires. He hands it over to Conan. Conan goes back to newyork and four middle fingers get directed back at Jay and NBC. I've always liked Dave more than Jay. I never understood why Jay did so well. Fox sounds cool and all but it might not work. I'd crack the biggest grin if Dave did something like this, and we know Daves a man of his word and he would not renig on such an offer.

    Now that it's all over....

    by wordage

...the way Conan went out was really beautiful. What do I mean? I mean when Conan got the Tonight Show, it seemed like he'd lost some of his edge and was on his way toward become a true corporate man. I've watched him from the beginning in his very first year. Those late college nights I spent studying, Conan and Andy were my friends. Had a chance to see a live taping in NYC last year, too, and am thankful for that. But once he got the Tonight Show, it seemed like some of the true spirit of his show was lost... I hoped that it was merely the shaky legs of a first year show, and that eventually he would find his footing once again, but then the evil beast Leno combined forces with the NBC studio executives to make another power grab,...and in Conan's final weeks...his spirit of rebellion and character returned...it was a beautiful thing.

Conan would do well at Fox

    by stircrazy81

I actually talked to a friend of mine about it before this came up. Conan would be perfect for Fox's late night line up, considering most of the comedy programming is similar to his kind of humor. It's more random and silly as opposed to Letterman or Leno, which their humor is based more on current events. Conan on Fox would be a huge hit I think.

    by j-dizzle

As a Conan fan, I do not want to see him on CBS.

Conan's humor would be too much for that network. They would probably mute him just as much as NBC did when he hosted the Tonight Show, if not more so.

Fox and Conan would be a perfect match since they're more risque and smart with their comedy. They could easily accommodate Conan's humor.

    Ain't It Conan News. Yawn.

    by burnhollywood

Said it once, I'll say it again...Conan couldn't cut it. In effect, NBC is paying $45 million to GET RID of the unfunny twit.
And here's an amusing quote he made a while back:
“I think sometimes, especially in 2009, people can overstate the idea that there’s a comedy barrier that separates 11:30 and 12:30 and that you’ll ignite antimatter if you bring 12:30 comedy into the 11:30 hour,” O’Brien told reporters Tuesday. “But DVRs have changed everything. The Internet has changed everything.”
    Source: http://warmingglow.uproxx.com/2009/05/the-masturbating-bear-is-coming-back
So "DVRs" and "The Internet" have "changed everything"...but we're still supposed to believe his assertion that it was Leno's lead-in-to-a-lead-in effect that was dragging his ratings down, and not his tediously scatological humor in the typically mild-mannered time slot causing a mass-exodus to Letterman.
The truth of the matter is, if Leno went back to his 11:35pm slot, and the ratings went back to their former levels, Conan would look like he fucked himself...what probably happened. This way, he saves face and walks with a HUGE paycheck. Nice score.
Now if only he could get his fans to STFU and quit whining...Jeezus, get a life, will ya?

Actually, I'm trying to expand your knowledge base, kiddo...what IS interesting and hugely amusing about this story is that everyone got what they wanted: Letterman got the ratings and a good laugh at Leno's expense, Leno got his time slot back, and Conan got to play victim even as he strolled out the door with a gold mine. The only losers were NBC (which deserves it) and *briefly*, the Conan fans.

As others have said. The NBC stations wanted Leno gone from 10PM as a lead in to their news show. Thats why this occurred, it had nothing to do with how Conan was doing on the Tonight Show. Affiliates were losing millions a month because of Leno, who was getting beat by 7 or 8 shows every night in his time slot. NBC affiliates understand they arent going to win all those time slots, but getting beat by A&E on the time slot is fairly unprecedented, so Jay had to go from 10 PM.

    Leno is a fucking automaton.....

    by dasher

He is the McDonald's of comedy and he will mass-produce it anytime and anywhere, irrespective of the circumstances. Just give him a stage and a mike and he'll do his schtick. Here's the proof: five years ago, my wife invited me to a resort in Scottsdale, Arizona for a business conference she was attending. It was a good idea, since I got to hang out at the pool while she was in meetings all day. One night I went with her to a dinner for the conference guests that had Leno as the featured guest. He went out and did a decent set, for what it was. His jokes were edgier than his usual TV monologue, the material less topical/political and more "everyday" situational humor. But what irked me was that he made no reference to what had happened a day ago - the death of Johnny Carson. In fact, mere HOURS earlier he had taped the Carson "tribute" episode of The Tonight Show and then flew to Arizona to work this dinner. I was surprised that he kept the gig at all and found it a tad awkward and inappropriate that he was there. Of all the days of the year, did he really need the money on THAT day? Was there no time for reflection? For mourning? If he was going to work, at the very least he could have incorporated a Carson tribute or made mention of him - SOMETHING to indicate he's a human being. It was really quite strange that he said nothing and did nothing, given the circumstances. But with the dustups he's had with Conan and Letterman, I now realize his behavior that night is in keeping with who he is. Leno is a thoughtless bastard who cares only about himself.

The writing is on the wall, people. Read the tea leaves, folks. Something is going on. Why did Hanks mysteriously bring up CBS, totally out of left field, only to have Conan say "it sounds like a nice place". Why did Les Moonvez pay a visit to Letterman while all this was going on, and Dave felt the need to mention this, without any real explanation of its actual signicance? Maybe it's just wishfull thinking on my part, but I think Dave's WorldWide Pants is seriously lookling into the notion of getting into the CoCo producing business...

An alliance between the forces of Conana and the WWP might be just what the doctor ordered to take down this "Good Ship BigJaw". I just wonder if the contract CoCo's people negotiated with the suited peacocks allows him to guest host. We know he can't host his OWN show untill september, but can he guest host anyone else's? I'd love to see the business fruits of a newly forged friendship between these two men spring up out of this whole mess. Conan and Dave now share more than just a common adversary in Leno, they share a common experience with the same formerly #1 network. Conan never seemed all that comfortable in LA anyways. Its time for him to begin preparing to return to his true home, where he's honestly appreciated and where he first honed his formidable comedic skills to begin with. Hell, its no great secret that Dave's been getting burned out these last few years. Now that he's gotten his second wind, he can go out with style and in top form, like Carson before him. Johnny would've approved of this alliance, I'd like to think. Carson reputedly never cared much for Leno. If this indeed comes to pass, Dave should retain an active role in the show. He can contribute a nightly correspondance update, have an active hand along with Conan in overseeing the writing of the show, etc. World Wide Pants could oversee production in conjunction with ConaCo. There's a certain undeniable symetry to this entire situation. Dave and Conan joining forces is like divine providence and poetic justice all rolled into one. The very notion of it is far too juicy and delicious for it not to come to pass. May the powers that be make it so!

    by dingbatty

and legend (before Leno watered it down) was Conan's dream, I really felt the time slot and expectations -- not matter how off base -- of what was presentable to the demographic of that slot, were detrimental and incompatible with his style. I'd much rather see Ferguson get the gig if Leno tanks hard, as I think he is a good fit and could restore its former glory. If I'm not mistaken, the Carson tonight show was one of his inspirations for coming to America.

    Why Conan's ratings were down

    by jt kirk

It had a lot to do with NBC airing another Tonight Show program ending a mere 35 minutes before Conan's version. Not only did Leno's shit program tank the ratings, but some of the folks that would have watched The Tonight Show instead got their fill of late night talk show material with Jay and went away before the news even aired. NBC screwed 2 pooches on this one, they failed their affiliates with a mediocre 10pm suicide move, and they undermined one of the most well-known and best-respected franchises in TV history. That's why they pimped Leno's new show as being a variety show before it came out, they knew if they admitted that it was just a clone of Leno's Tonight Show, it would drive away audiences from both timeslots at once.

Ah, whaddya know...someone who wants to challenge me without resorting to name-calling or copping out. You've earned a polite but hard-to-refute reply, my striped friend:
For starters, THE JAY LENO SHOW was doing excellent for a late-night talk show, just NOT for that particular prime time slot, averaging from 5.9 to 6.6 million viewers. Compare this to Letterman's 4 million viewers and Conan's paltry 2.4 - 2.5 million. FYI, Leno was averaging 5.7 million on THE TONIGHT SHOW before the shift. My calculator tells me that Conan's ratings were a 56% drop from Leno's.
But what the affiliates were bitching about was the 25% drop in viewership from the dramas NBC used to run in that slot. Unless we're talking about some kind of bizarre multiplying effect one of his pothead fans might dream up, I'm a bit confused at how Leno's loss of 1/4 of the previous 10pm viewers could snowball into Conan more-than-halving the TONIGHT SHOW's watchers. Unless you're willing to acknowledge the simple fact that his approach to the program dropped the remainder.
This is bolstered by another disquieting fact Conan fans don't want to acknowledge...Fallon's ratings on LATE NIGHT are UP since Conan left. 21%, in fact.
Little wonder NBC is eager to send Coco Gingerballs packing...if most of Leno's 10pm crowd is willing to make the switch, they'll still have twice the number of viewers. In fact, my calculator tells me he could lose up to 30% of his 10pm viewership and still beat Letterman.
Dollars and cents...what television is ALL about, Hughjass. And Chuck_Chuckwalla? You're right...don't argue with me. You'll get served. Same as your drug buddies Hugh and Wordage. Now go back to crying at your pointless wake, ladies.

Conan's making a ruckus to exploit Jay and NBC's foolishness in launching the 10pm experiment. It's a face-saving maneuver so he doesn't get remembered as the guy who nearly killed THE TONIGHT SHOW and as some kind of martyr instead. The media and fans are lapping it up.

Pre-writers strike, Conan's ratings were far better than Fallon's are now. It was the WGA strike that almost knee-capped "Late Night" in Conan's final year, when Ferguson, with the benefit of writers thanks to Dave and CBS, started closing in on him. You have to examine the anatomy of a situation before you jump to such one dimensional conclusions.

How to know that Conan's new show on Fox will be cancelled....

    by kai_mah'gra

........within a year, or 2 tops. It's simple really.
    Herc is a big fan.
Look at his track record. To wit: anything Buffyverse/Whedoncrap, with Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse....all canned. And now Conan on the Tonight show. Herce's support for your show is like Kryptonite and Cyanide mized together for the show in question: bad poison. He's been peddling this ratings nonsense for the last couple of months wishing on Jay's show at 10pm to fail (it didn't - he was still able to draw the same 5-6 million viewers that he used to pull in at 11.35pm, double what Conan was pulling and still 1.2-1.5 Million more viewers than Letterman was pulling,), and now he trots out this nonsense about Conan doubling Leno's audience (again he didn't: here's a hint Herc, ratings don't work the same way as pure audience count or audience numbers. Getting a 2.0 at 11.35pm when there are fewer viewers watchin TV does not mean that you got double the viewers that a program with 1.26 rating got at 10pm when there are typically more viewers awake and watching TV. And then he makes a fool of himself and repeats the same nonsense in the Talkback.)The sad thing is that he knows better, but he's just peddling this nonsense to perpetuate some fantasy that in some bizarro planet, Conan is more popular than Jay (he's not. If he was he wouldn't be getting cancelled and replaced by Jay. Pity last week's audience or not )

It will be fun watching Herc play the ratings game again, in September until it begins to get apparent that Conan's hype isn't holding up and Jay is back to normal kicking Letterman's butt at 11.35pm. Of course he'll bury the feature, and pretend like it never existed and quickly go back to shamelessly pimping whatever new nonsense Whedonis peddling again, until, like Coco's new show, it gets cancelled again.

    Right Herc?
Search you heart. You know this to be true,

    Conan NOT going to CBS

    by conquestmelee

Dave Letterman is not going to be screwed by Leno/NBC corporate for the second time in his career.

After loosing the Tonight Show to backroom deals and trickery, Dave established the late-night brand at CBS. Under the banner Worldwide Pants, he's brought numerous programs to both late-night (Ferguson) and prime-time (Raymond). He is certainly not going to be forced out by the turbulence that rocked the peacock.

Conan, with proven integrity, would not sweep into another legend's territory. If maintaining the same talk-show format, he's simply going to Fox. But, in all likelihood, he's going to reboot the format for our 21st century new-media society. Whatever the hell that means, I'll definitely check it out, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Letterman will retire in 2012 and pass the mantle to Ferguson. Fallon has led in the ratings this week due to the Conan lead-in. Ferguson had and will again be leading the 12:35 hour on CBS. He's taken the consistently loosing time-slot for CBS (Kilborn, f-ing Snyder?!?) and made it fresh and funny. CBS will back the Late Show with Craig Ferguson come 2012. They'll even give him a band.

Letterman won't be a douche and take a 10pm time-slot. That's left for opportunistic losers, like Leno.

The Late Show with Conan O'Brien too far-fetched?

    by royston lodge

    Let's thing about this.
David Letterman is 62. David Letterman owns Worldwide Pants.
It is in Letterman's own interest to make sure that The Late Show has a kick-ass host when he retires. He does not need to be the host in order to earn income from the show. Plus, he needs a kick-ass host so that The Late Late Show, we he also receives income from, continues to benefit from strong lead-in ratings.
Letterman cannot be there forever. This may be the single best opportunity that Worldwide Pants ever gets to secure a host who is strong enough to keep The Late Show going.

    True dat.

    by royston lodge

What you say is true. It is indeed one of the variables. But there are other variables that put pressure on Dave in the other direction.
Does David Letterman want Worldwide Pants to be a successful company after he leaves The Late Show? It's a simple fact that he cannot stay the host forever. So, if he wants The Late Show to eventually continue without him, it's in his best interest to make sure it has the best possible host AND to make sure that competition is minimized. If the continuation of The Late Show is one of Dave's goals, giving it to Conan sooner rather than later might be his best option.
On the other hand, if he doesn't care if The Late Show/Worldwide Pants continues without him, then it doesn't matter. He can just continue hosting the show until they have to carry him off on a stretcher.
It all depends on what Dave's long-term goals really are.

ConquestMelee - Dave won't be getting "screwed"

    by jettl93

His contract is up this year, he's 62 years old and has made comments about eventually retiring. I have it on good authority that he is going to step down later this year instead of extending his contract with CBS(and for the record when he was considering renewing his contract it was only going to be untill 2012, b ecause he belives he's getting too old to host everynight). So rather then continue his show past where he wants, he's handing the riegns over to conan. Dave's company owns the show, him and CBS want to see it continue, and with conan out of work and dave ready to retire, the timing is just right to snatch o'brien up before FOX or cable doesPeople saying Dave is getting screwed again are just ignorant, unlike jay, letterman WANTS to step down, so how is he being screwed by Leno?

    by j-dizzle

3 months ago Ferguson signed a precontract agreement to take over the Late Show from Letterman. Letterman has been impressed with Ferguson and feels he would be a good fit for the Late Show. Apparently Paul Shaffer had a huge role in getting Ferguson the job. Shaffer is said to be more comfortable with the prospect of Ferguson since he knows he would be out of a job if Conan came in because Conan would want to bring Max, the Max Weinberg Seven, and Andy Richter.

And by the way, Conan did indeed sign a contract on Saturday, only it was a contract with Fox. Negotiations for Conan's staff are still ongoing but a deal should be reached very soon.

I'm surprised you didn't know any of this.

It seems that every article I was able to find on Dave's contract says he had been looking to extend up through 2012. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to have been finalized. Under the circumstances, I can see Conan potentially going to CBS. Still though, I'm a big Ferguson fan, and I'd hate to seem him screwed. After reading his autobiography "American On Purpose" earlier this year, Ferguson sounded positioned well with his success at 12:35 and respect between him and Dave to move up to 11:35 when the time would come. But, the hasty NBC decisions may force an alternate path. I suppose we'll hear something around March.

The REAL explanation for all this

    by julienthejamminjabber

I talked to my 92 year old grandmother the other day and asked her who she watches. She said she loves Jay Leno and when asked about Conan and Letterman, she had never heard of either of them.

Jay's 10pm show upset the affiliates because all the geriatric set people who watch Jay assumed that once his show was over, it was their bedtime. Thus, they stopped watching the news and were no longer getting their nightly dose of required fearmongering that the military industrial complex depends on for its own profiteering.

Meanwhile, the NBC pointyheads assumed that Conan would capture the supposedly valuable 18-49 demographic, not realizing that nobody in age 18-49 watches tv anymore because they're too busy watching porn on the internet or playing their video games or watching Conan on hulu instead.

Letterman for his part, only gets about 4 million viewers per night, or a bit more than 1% of the population of the US. Jay and Dave combined get about 3% of the pop. so what the hell is everybody else doing? Basically, they've realized that all the pap the networks put on the air is nothing other than mindless advertainment designed to prop up the phony glamour of dimwit actors in the hopes of restoring the flagging returns on movies now that the digital revolution has destroyed the value of DVDS (i.e. slim discs of super cheap plastic with a bunch of ones and zeros etched into them that somehow expect to be worth $20).

And as for the Ferguson rumours, he never had a deal to take over the 11:35 time slot, he's happy with the late late show and CBS and dave know that conan is the safer bet in terms of finding a sucessor. This isn't rumours folks, its a genuine scoop, i have several sources at CBS and NBC that confirm this stuff, Paul is also stepping down, conan would only sing if he was able to bring andy and max and a large group of his staff

Conan replacing Letterman does sound great

    by cylon_conspiracy

I actually don't care for Letterman (although right now I prefer him over Jay) but Conan has always been more Letterman than Leno or even Carson. Would be a good fit. And from all the clips I've seen of the new late night wars, Letterman has almost taken a father figure role to Conan in all this, so it would make total sense of the guy to step down and let Conan inherit the earth. And if his contract expires in 2 years, and Conan needs a job, it is perfect timing.

Not to mention, this new Conan/Jay rivalry would probably help ratings for both shows.

Unless it's true that Ferguson has really been promised the Late Show. That would pretty much kill my idea.

    by bizarrojerry

I don't think in the industry that his insulting the network will have any repercussions. All of the late night hosts seem to spend a lot of time mocking their network. Leno, Letterman and Conan have all done it for years. (I dunno if Ferguson does). And as Conan said, he was allowed to say anything he wanted about them. But I agree that besides being classy, his decision to thank NBC for what they did for him in the past probably made good business sense. Who knows if the future won't bring him back to NBC?

    CONAN IS NOT REPLACING LETTERMAN

    by j-dizzle

It was already agreed 3 months ago that Ferguson would take over from Letterman since everyone at CBS thought Conan was staying at NBC. Contrary to popular belief, Shaffer is not stepping down with Dave. Letterman feels Shaffer and Ferguson would have great chemistry on the Late Show sees Shaffer as part of the legacy that needs to stay.

CBS have even signed those two Christmas Sweater wearing guys to exclusive deals, and will be reoccurring characters on Ferguson's show (they've signed on to appear on The Late Late Show AND The Late Show).

As much as Conan respects Letterman, after the The Tonight Show debacle, Conan has no interest in taking over someone else's legacy. Conan is now determined to start his own show, and begin his own legacy. This was exemplified by the deal he signed with Fox on Saturday.

Fox were the ones who arranged the Conan appearance on The Late Show for March 1st so that Conan would stay fresh in viewers' minds. Letterman and his people were happy to oblige and send a message to NBC and Jay Leno.

Fox is even thinking of producing a made for TV movie like "The Late Shift" but covering the Conan/Leno/NBC situation. Again, the reason is to hype Conan on their network to keep audiences interested.

None of these are rumors. My sources within CBS and Fox have all corroborated this. I've even be hired to do the first draft of Fox's "Late Shift" movie. A tentative title, at the moment, is "Leno & Coco: A Late Night Betrayal."

on Apocalypse... meanwhile, I had a cell phone in my hand with Nicholson on hold to replace him. If you read my bio, I didn't even give a shit about the business anymore at that time... it was right after I inked a deal to sell my beloved Gumby, giving away all the rights. Anyway, we got Brando out of that tree and I was able to get back to L.A. to help Jackson put the finishing touches on Off The Wall. Luckily, I did NOT win that argument about the intro to Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough. As usual, MJ and my wife at the time, beloved Farrah (rip, sweetie... you were always my favorite) restored my zest and verve for this business to which I have given so much.Signed... JettL93.

You seem to missing the point. Leno's show failed the affiliates, they got it cancelled, thats why Leno is taking back his old job because
    1) Conan wouldnt let them push the Tonight show to 12:05.
    2) NBC thinks Leno will do better then Conan was doing
    3) Leno is a much more expensive buyout.

Acting as if Conan is the reason this all happened is disingenuous to say the least. This entire fiasco is driven by Leno's poor ratings in the 10 PM slot 5 days a week, even NBCs original press releases admit that, why try to change the truth? And though its true that Conans numbers on the tonight show were lower then Lenos, I'd point out the drop isnt near as big as the drop we got when Leno took over for Johnny. Leno failed at his 10 PM experiment and decided to go back to late night for one more try at glory I guess. Personally I don't think he'll ever get his numbers back to his average high of a few years ago, and now when Jay retires in a few years they will have noone to take over.

The notion of a 10pm talk show is what failed the affiliates...Leno's viewers actually made the switch, but even TONIGHT SHOW ratings are insufficient for that time slot.
And Conan is 100% to blame for his own fellowship not being able to tune in to his antics anymore, because he rejected NBC's compromise of a 1/2 hour, 11:30pm Leno show helping to boost his ratings...sound move, because most viewers would probably stick around rather than switch to a half-finished Letterman show. I guess his ego couldn't take the simple fact that Leno's pull was better in that time slot than his.
If Conan REALLY cared about his fan's feelings, he'd have accepted the compromise.

Though he was too classy to say this in his open letter (thus putting some pressure and the burden of eternal gratitude on them), another reason Conan didn't take a 12:05 Tonight show is because it could have destroyed Fallon and Carson's shows. I would say Conan refused to move back a half hour not so much because of his ego but, ironically, because of his concern for his peers.

American Mythos was attempting to make the case that Fallon's increase in viewership by 21% over Conan's last season was attributable to the writer's strike (not even the same season) and the debut of Ferguson (both faced Ferguson, Fallon's doing it better).
My point is that Fallon is just performing better in the time slot vs. Conan, that's all. There's no excuse except viewer preference.

BurnHollywoodBurn, are you forgetting Leno stole Conans thunder? And stole the best guests? Conan routinely had the worst guests of late night. And add the fact he has to follow a show that is exactly the same as his. Why would anyone want to watch Conan, when Leno just came on, and with better guests?

Remember Conan wasn't fired, he left because he didn't want to be pushed back half an hour, it was Lenos ratings that were the true cause of the fiasco, stop blaming Conan.

Burn Hollywood, Fallon was not beating Ferguson

    by american mythos

He beat him in his first TWO WEEKS, at which point his ratings dipped below Ferguson's (http://tinyurl.com/d8xx3h). For the rest of '09 Fallon, at best, slightly trailed or tied Ferguson. Here are the ratings from late December '09, before the Leno-O'Brien blowup(http://tinyurl.com/ygor3r4). Even during the first week of the scandal, Jan. 11-15, Ferguson posted better numbers than Fallon (http://tinyurl.com/yanymzm). It wasn't until Conan's last week with NBC (Jan. 18-22) that Fallon regained a substantial lead over Ferguson, something I doubt will last now that O'Brien is gone. Compare that to "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," which consistently beat Ferguson.

"It wasn't until Conan's last week with NBC (Jan. 18-22) that Fallon regained a substantial lead over Ferguson, something I doubt will last now that O'Brien is gone."
If Leno resumes his previous TONIGHT SHOW viewership (might take time, but he's helped by the public's short attention span and the Olympic hiatus), his lead-in will be stronger for Fallon and he could begin beating Ferguson on a routine basis. Same as Conan did with his lead-in.
I see Fallon was crying crocodile tears for Conan Friday, but really, he's incredibly fortunate...Conan might have insisted that he get his old time slot back, and NBC probably would have agreed.
