as I deem that to be much more entertaining then a bunch of celebrities pretending to give a shit about the poor peoples of the world, and their meaningless little lives. Sorry, but the only time these people give a crap about others is when they are telling them what to do with their plastics and who to vote for. I already donated half my month's salary to Red Cross, my conscience is good, thanks George.
-
Did that fucknut make sure his PR people topline his name on this?
That guy seems too desperate to be everyone's favorite or the President of Hollywood or something. -
Just look where his name shows on that press release: President Bill Clinton, Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Chris Rock, Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jon Stewart, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, ROBERT PATTINSON, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hanks, Will Smith with Muhammad Ali... REALLY???
-
It's how he's get into ladies pants when that twinkle eyes charm doesn't work..."well, I don't mean to brag, but I like save the planet by guilt tripping people while I chill out here on this poolin the Hollywood hills..."
-
it's in alphabetical order starting with their first names..... i mean, come on.
-
I'll be donating and hopefully all of you do too.
-
or katrina

not one mainstream british channel have picked this up?
-
just curious how much a big country like that will collect. There was a similar style event here in Holland yesterday and that amounted to more than 83 million.

but i didnt think it would be this bad

Wonder if that means Conan's last show is basically canceled.
by heyscot
-
Yeah, but he's doing much better on both counts than YOU...saving the planet AND banging broads. The two aren't mutually exclusive, after all...
Playa hater. -
To tell you the truth, he isn't saving the planet, he is merely assisting in reinstating a sub-standard infrastructure. And by banging broads, he is purely sustaining a mysogonist ideal. He is a lovely man with fine hair, but he is an actor, which instantly makes him less intelligent than ascientist and more suggestible than a hypnotist and richer than an economist.
-
Does this mean this event will be shwon on all your channels?
That is unique, our channels never do this. Diana's funural was the closest with two channels. -
Don't pull that fucking "helping is hurting" right-wing claptrap with me, pal. You don't want to help in this situation, fine...don't act like you're something special. You're not.
If a little old lady gets hit by a bus in front of me on a city street, I neither pushed her, nor saved her life. Which makes me...nothing. Neither a villain nor a hero. Nothing to brag about, same as your assertion that engaging in a mutually consensual relationship is "mysogyny" doesn't make you a moral superstar. Makes you sound like a tedious prude, in fact.
It's not a feather in your cap to sit on your fucking ass and backbite about the "big picture" when people need medical supplies NOW. So excuse me if Clooney seems like a nicer guy in my book than you or Lone_Gunman. -
Neato. Anyways, I miss HBO's versions of the telethon.
But this does get more exposure which matters most. -
Bumping Smallville. I am bummed. I don't see why it's not on one network.
-
I am taking the piss out of Clooney. I keep on having the Team America in my head!!! i know he is doing the right thing, absolutely, but there is always something sour about the celeb aid kinda stuff. Haiti is a horrible thing for sure and its right they help where they can. I am 100% supportive, dont fret! I cant help take the piss as it so deliciously hollywood! :)

Will Clooney "lose" all the money again like 9/11?
by the_maltese_vulcan
Funny how he had that big telethon but 9/11 families never saw a nickel.
-
If you give money for Haiti, it's an altruistic act. Period. So give money and feel better about yourself. You'll have deserved it.
However, dont delude yourself that something like this doesn't get politicized either. Fact is, Hollywood is Liberal and this type of thing is a no-risk, feel-good about yourself event as well. I mean, if they truly care about injustice and poverty where's Hope For Palestine? Why's Tibet and Haiti get the Hollywood treatment but the West Bank occupation by the Israelis or human rights violations in Saudi Arabia get nothing? And while you're on the subject, how many of these people were actually doing something over the past 30 years? Haiti's been in the shitter since the days of Papa Doc and Baby Doc. Give money, everyone should actually give since Haiti is in our hemisphere and it's an embarrassment to the entire world but dont pretend that Hollywood gives a shit or actually has a moral compass. It doesn't. George Clooney is the most self-satisfied asswipe out there too... he'll break his arm congratulating himself for the "injustices" he's combating all over the world, yet not a peep about the long history of discrimination and racism in his own industry. -
"Clooney seems like a nicer guy in my book than you or Lone_Gunman."
ho ho you people you make me laugh. You don't know a dang thing about us, but that doesn't stop you making sweeping judgement on who we are. You're no better than anyone. So get back in your shell man. -
so says TV Guide
-
Huge clouds of smug will be forming on both the east and west coast of the US tonight.... Merging together to create "the perfect storm of self-satisfaction".... Costa Rica here I come!
-
The Day The Earth Stood Still. It would probably do killer ratings from everyone looking to escape the pukefest that is the latest celeb du jour. Every one of these programs is a) a way for celebs to self-promote without appearing to do so and b) almost invariably a scam of which but a fraction of the funds will actually end up going to that country. Anybody that thinks differently just rolled off the turnip truck yesterday.
-
BurnHollywood. Don't be under the delusion that the money you are being scammed out of will ever make it to that country. They may need medical supplies now, and if you want to help... give to the Red Cross. Giving the money to fund celeb-o-vision does nothing but make your wallet lighter.
-
will Roman Polanski be allowed to make an earnest plea for the children of Haiti?
-
Besides in the headline written by Herc? He's in alphabetical order along with everybody else thats appearing. The only reason he's so associated with this is because he helped put it together. Don't blame the guy because he realizes he has the star-power to get this sort of stuff done when others can't (or won't). It's the same when it comes his movies. He mainly works with interesting directors on interesting movies that may not have gotten produced or seen without his obvious celebrity. If he was the fame obsessed douche people want to make him out to be, he'd be working with Michael Bay and Brett Ratner on huge, mindless movies, instead of with the Coen Brothers and Steven Soderberg. I know I sound like some crazed Clooney fan (more like a Soderberg fan) but I just hate it when people make assumptions just by association. "Oh this telethon has a bunch of celebrities so fuck them and their efforts and their cause." So what if he organizes a telethon using his celebrity? If it causes people to tune in and maybe donate, so what, as long as it serves a purpose. I probably won't be watching, but I know people who will watch because of the celebrities and in the end donate feel compelled to donate, even if its just to brag about the next day "Oh I donated money to the George Clooney Haiti thing." Clooney knows this, and thats why he does it.

Conan's last Tonight Show. It's his last night to showcase any of his comedy bits before NBC locks them up forever.
-
Do I care that people are suffering because of an earthquake? Sure, I feel bad and it's horrible. However, aren't people constantly suffering and dying all over the world? Just because Haiti is in the news and this tragedy is big news doesn't make it more important than the countless other tragedies constantly taking place all over the planet.
-
where were the telephons for all the americans who have lost their jobs and homes because of the financial meltdown brought upon them by greedy wall street bankers and an inept government? i've given a donation to the red cross for haiti, but we need to remember, charity begins at home.
-
Robert Pattinson is an actor? Since when?
-
the man helped organize a huge charity event, and used his celebrity to help promote it.you people make up your minds beforehand about people. sometimes a good-looking famous guy can actually do some good. what the FUCK are all of you snivelers doing?pathetic whining assholes in these talkbacks, it's pathetic.
-
The telethon.
-
the reality is, some megastars could hand over a million easily and never miss it. U2 making a benefit record with Jay-Z when between them they could donate as much as a record would make -- and not miss it. Ditto for many mega-wealthy entertainment figures. I'm not saying all are ultra-rich like that - but compared to someone who can only donate $10, $20 at this point? All donations to help are wonderful, but just pointing this out. You may disagree and I understand that. I'd like to see Goldman Sachs send five million at least, 'cause they are scum buckets, period.
-
...for everyone in the world! Come 'n get it!
-
clooney is a CUNT! its all over his face!!! He has a MOUSTACHE!!! he is friends with BRAD PITT!!! - My name is @awaitsinevitableabuse@ I do like matt damon though. he luvly mahn!
-
I already donated 10 euro here and i dont get a show. Want my money back. need it dvds. Ten euro is like two dvds in xtra vision. I could pick up casino and ghostbusters for that.
-
I donated money to Haiti, like lots of people. So does that mean I get to watch something other then this crap. Why is this on every freaking channel.
God I hope this doesn't bump Conan. -
WTF?!?!?!
-
if all the celebs appearing could donate 1-5 million each maybe more since they can afford it, it would raise waaaaay more money than whatever they end up getting from the people watching. seriously, you get paid millions upon millions a year to simply act but you're asking the regular american joes to donate? weird. least now i know there wont be anything on tv tonight, even canada is airing this shit.
-
you mean like the $1 million Clooney is personally donating to Haiti relief tonight?
-
see my previous post. plus, DiCaprio and a rumored 4 or 5 other celebrities are all donating a million each.
-
this thing starts at 8 and will probably last 3hours at most so it'll be done by the time the local news starts. being live it might go a little over but yeah if late night is affected it'll just be a delay.
-
its all well that Clooney has donated but all the people appearing on the show could donate waaaay more than this thing ever could raise. or even better, why dont they all match or double whatever the final tally is? but no, they just want airtime to ask a country thats in a recession to give. im not putting them down for actually doing this show, its a good cause and all but yeah they could make a much bigger difference.
-
I understand the point. when I was in college, I saw people spend like $2000 to fly to Mexico, build an outhouse and pass out a couple Bibles, then they'd come back and claim this transformative experience. And all I could think was, "If they had just donated $2000 to whatever impoverished area they had visited, it would have done a helluva lot more good."
but I don't think this is the case here. it's not proselytizing. these are actors and musicians. what can they do besides donate some money, and donate their "talent" (in quotations because I know Christina Aguilera will be there) to help raise money and awareness. look at home much money was donated already through the texting thing. like $10 million. since all of the talent for this concert/telethon thing is free of charge (and the TV time cost was greatly reduced) you'd be surprised how cheap it can be to put something like this on.
and I guarantee you, the celebrity donations will match or beat the amount raised by us "normal" folks.I mean, what the hell else can they do? the idea of celebrities spending way too much on themselves may be a moral issue, but it exists independently from these types of issues. (i.e. why not donate $1 million to Haiti BEFORE the quake? like DiCaprio's gonna miss it?) -
What is wrong with you people? Cynicism over the Spiderman reboot is one thing, but have you no shame?
-
Lost and the production costs were given to the Red Cross, the would probably raise a pretty big chunk of the money raised by the self-back-patting production all in addition to the millions that Americans would give anyways. How many non givers do they hope to convert?
-
Well seeing as SciFi (sorry not using their new monkier) is the only channel airing anything OTHER than this, it should have pretty decent ratings...
-
and state that Obama doesn't like white people.
-
That's the sad part. It will probably still bomb. Whatever "it" is. This show is the antidote.
-
Actually that's what's needed. Anytime there's a place in need, money is thrown at the problem, instead of people actually going there and doing something. Too bad more people don't go to these places to physically helping out instead of donating money to a telethon that who knows where the money is really going.
-
you completely missed my point, but thanks for playing. most of the $2000 was for airfare, accommodation, etc. almost NONE of it went to the people in need.if you think I was suggesting people blindly donate money without knowing what it's going to, you COMPLETELY misinterpreted what I wrote. my point was simply that too many people want to FEEL like they're doing good, rather than asking themselves what would be the most efficient way to actually do good. They're amputating limbs in Haiti with Advil instead of anesthetic...you think they need missionaries? they need Red Cross planes with fucking MEDICINE and SUPPLIES, and that costs money.
-
man-o-man, that musical line-up is wretched.
-
Donating physical labor is just as important. People would rather treat these people as tv characters and just throw money at them to make the story disappear instead of actually going there and helping. If you have a problem with people doing mission work, that's your business, but some of them are actually over there doing work (other than handing out bibles) that most here would rather just throw money at instead of actually going over there. You do realize that someone has to go over there and do the work right?
-
I called him out on that top billing bullshit because I hate that fucker. Hate, hate, hate that fucker. It seemed like a minute after the earthquake hit the news, he was already throwing his hat in the ring to throw this benefit and the media has to throw his name out there as being the brainchild. It just stinks of a PR stunt to throw his name out there, probably in hopes to win yet another undeserved Oscar.
The media should call this effort for what it is and not include Clooney's name other than that he's a part of it with a bunch of other celebs. I know it's an immature slag on my part, but I don't think I said it enough how much I despise this prick. He should've never made it past the Facts of Life rape episode or whatever the fuck he was famous for. The Prince of Hollywood or whatever the fuck that dick thinks he is.
It's been a bad day and I needed to vent. -
never mind, you're not getting the point.
-
work out? Just wondering? I will say that at least one celebrity (Brad Pitt) is actually out there in New Orleans doing something.
-
look, here's my point. TRY to follow.
I'm a decent size guy, I can lift rocks and rubble with the best of them. but I have no medical training, no emergency training, no special knowledge of any kind for disaster relief.now, that said, I could spend a couple grand and fly to Haiti to move dig out buildings, and move rocks. I'm sure it would help a bit. but wouldn't it help a lot more if I took me $2000 and donated it to Doctors without Borders, or Red Cross? since they are trained and specialized in this type of situation?that's my point. that sometimes "selflfess" acts are really anything but. sometimes writing a check it is the best thing you can do. -
These places need money. Not celebrities going down grand standing. Anesthetics and medicine cost money and thats whats needed right now.
-
Good for you. I hope Clooney doesn't spend it on his flight to Vegas to donate a Leatherheads costume to Planet Hollywood.
-
Do not think that the 6 actors donating a million bucks each won't be deducting that $$$ from their taxes. So not only does the national debt go up because of the loss of that income tax money, government spending for aid for Haiti will add a big chunk of debt as well. But hey, it isn't real money when we're talking national debt anyways, is it???
-
He must be working behind the scenes.
-
I donted some...I ain't that wealthy, however.
and that Katrina telethon you mentioned raised $30 million, by the bye... -
first off, it's not like you just take $2 million off of your taxes. do you know how taxes work? if you donate $2 million, that lowers your taxable income by that much. and for someone like Clooney, who makes maybe $40 mil a year, he's still paying a good chunk.
second, that is EXACTLY why charity is a tax write off. we WANT people to donate.god people are confused sometimes... -
Maybe it's selfish of me, but I've already donated to the American Red Cross like many friends of mine. Why is it that this telethon has to be on every freaking channel. As someone mentioned before, where was the telethon for the people who lost everything here in the US during this recession.
-
Wasn't that aired on C-Span when all those too big to fail banks (who have now furthered their aims of a banking monopoly) and GM got their handouts.
-
Seriously I cannot be the only American who has grown tired of our country jumping leaps and bounds when tragic disasters strike another country. Oh we need to have a telethon to get them money to help with the aid, oh all these stars are going to partake in influencing us to give our money to help another place that has known for a long time they sit over serious earthquake causing fault lines. It's like California, it will happen eventually and shock should not be something we all feel the need to go through.
Sorry but my money will go US based needs and aid here that helps us first. Other countries and their citizens need to do more or find alternatives to handle catastrophies/natural disasters, "poverty" is not an acceptable excuse when they have elected officials sitting high in well furnished offices as they walk on the backs of the country's poor. -
W.T.F? Can you nerds please update me more quickly as to the Hate of the Now. You're all fucking slipping.
-
So right there with you. This is about stars wanting to grab some cheap PR for a night to dress up the latest cause. Did any of them even know where Haiti was a month ago? Six months from now it will be the same POS third world cesspool it was the day before the quake. And no one will give an F. Also I'm fucking tired of the whole world hating the US for our imperialist and warring ways until they need us for something. Are Iran, Russia or North Korea doing a fucking thing for Haiti right now? Didn't think so...
-
What the fuck are you people on? What does Clooney have to gain from this? It's not like he's some no name actor that's just tryin to get his name known. People who live under rocks in far away lands know who George Clooney is. As it's been said before, he's using his celebrity to help those in need. Sure, he could have written a check for $10,000,000 in private. Instead, he gets all his friends together so he could raise that amount many times over. Even if it is a PR stunt, so what? Money will be raised for a good cause.
-
I'm totally with you. I'm so pissed off at all these fucking poor people being so fucking poor. why the fuck should anybody help someone less fortunate than them? that's fucking retarded. they should just get more fortunate, you know?it's fucking annoying how poor and needy they are with all their poverty and shit. fucking poor fucks.right on man, right on.
-
Y'know it's people like you and the idiot below you is why americans get a bad rap around the world. Selfish, lazy, self centered and ignorant. You do realize that there are ALOT of americans who live in Haiti? What they ae not gonna need help too?Or maybe the fact that during recessions international aid is one the first things to get cut so it's really up to us to help out the less fortunate. It's called being a decent human being. Think about that when you blow your money on your next online porn subscription you waste of life.
-
but I've grown accustomed to it, so I'll just mention "envelopes" => "envelops"
-
Batman credit card from Batman and Robin and charge his donations to it. Maybe Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze can show up to crash the telethon..."Cool Party!"
-
We know there was a god damned earthquake!!!
-
*hangs head, pinches bridge of nose, sighs*
Alright, only my fourth or fifth post in talkback, and third one New Orleans-related... (I swear I know about other stuff).
The Red Cross does good work for everyday, regular people whose lives have been disrupted by major disasters. The Red Cross helped me a lot immediately after Katrina when it wasn't readily apparent where or how I could find food, shelter, or access my own bank accounts. They're good folk, and I've donated to them now because I believe in what they do. Go ahead and send them some money if you're so inclined. I don't believe they're going to give it all to Clooney.
And if you think this telethon is crap, don't watch it. Personally, I might tune in to see how gun-shy Mike Myers is of going on camera at one of these things again, but please, do your own thing. -
...They see black or brown skins and it's always, "Them minorities shoulda built things better. Just let 'em die, thin out the herd."
-
...is sad indeed. So sad, that I won't even tell you why. I hope you sleep soundly. All you have to do is read the reports from Samuel Dalembert (NBA player from Haiti) who recently visited to know how terrible the situation really is there. It's far worse than what we're getting on the news. Fallen buildings, broken roads, fires and even deaths are not the worst of it. The worst of it is no water, no sanitation, no food, no hospitals and almost no medical care. People have limbs amputated in the street then being moved off to the side and left in hopes that they're recover with no medication and garbage everywhere. This country is far closer to use than many of the places we regularly send aid to, and they have virtually no government of their own to get anything done. I really don't understand how anybody could hate on us (citizens and government) doing whatever we can to help. I mean really, haven't we pissed off enough people and created enough hatred for the US all around the world already? It's probably a good thing that we help a country closer to many of us than other places in the US.
-
Do any of you geniuses have ANY IDEA how many social welfare programs their are in this country that your taxes are paying for? Shut up and get educated. We waste far more money in this country in a blink of an eye than the entire cost of everything we'll ever do for Haiti.
-
I really need to start proofreading and checking my spelling. I hate that mess.
-
Sorry people can hate me or bag on me because I choose not to support Haiti. It is their country let them deal with it, our country is suffering from a serious economic recession that has only begun to heal to the smallest fraction, our Government is handing out boatloads of cash to "suffering" corporations that deserve to file Bankruptcy and go the way of the Dodo as well.
We need to focus on us, the USA and only the USA. As another said what is Iran, China, N. Korea doing to aid in this "tragic affiar"? Nothing.. Oh that's right we are the USA and we rush to everyone's aid and help them... Right folks and when we crumble and stagger no one is there to help us or aid us.
And I have nothing against helping the poor, but the amount of money being thrown at Haiti, a fraction of that should be thrown here at America's homeless issues instead. Oh but wait the Hollywood stars would rather take exposure and support a non American cause this time around. -
an air mobilie hospital and relief workers. Iran's Red Crescent plans to send about 30 tonnes of aids including food, tents and medicine to Haiti. So whats your next excuse?
-
right on, man. I'm tired of people thinking that rich and powerful countries should help out poor countries that are split in two by earthquakes. I mean, it's not OUR fault there was an Earthquake there, right? why should we care?
you're so right on, dude. people are just acting all retarded and "compassionate" for no other reason than to try to be all cool and shit.people need to do some research, like you said. I mean, can you name me one influential figure in history that said we should help those less fortunate? no way. doesn't exist.research, people! -
And that is great, takes quite abit of searching at times (more than just a quick google search) but nevertheless it is nice to hear others stepping up their assistance game as well.
And smartass fucktard comments aside from others trying to be funny...When our country takes another major economic downturn in a few years from the horrid planning that goes on now, and that causes a domino effect, make sure to write your letters of help to Russia, China (oh wait they did help us by cutting that massive tax loan check from the W era that we as a society spent so willy nilly) Iran (should be a fun reply) and others and lets see where they stand.
I am a firm believer that this country(Haiti) in it's total shambles deserves help, but instead of us just throwing boatloads of money at it to make things "better" seriously instead start booking airline flights on the UN's cost centers to get more helping hands over there.
Oh but wait the UN is turning away professional search and rescue groups who are trained for situations such as this, there is a Texas based search and rescue non profit organization of volunteers that is about 85 strong with trained dogs and specialize in finding buried people.. But the UN blatantly told them "you aren't needed"... Really now? And yet people want to bash on me because I take the stance of "draw the line somewhere and work it out yourselves"..
I could go on and on, but my 10 bucks is going to pay for some gas tonight on the way home, Clooney and all the rich bastards who want us to donate, yet could easily generate extra millions from their already given "donations" (which will be tax write offs in the end) can pay my 10 bucks while I live my life paycheck to paycheck. -
I will be boycotting this dog and pony show. It's not that people don't care about other people but the hell needs a telethon to tell us these people need money. Turn on the dam news, been non-stop for it happened. This celebrity crap is just that, CRAP!
I don't need Clooney or anyone else to tell me to donate. If I want to donate I will. We don't need two hours of phony crying and testimonials.
George shut up and go make another bad movie. -
6 min in donations = 2 + mil in taxes not given. If you would bother to read, the 2 mil is collective. That is a very generous 2 mil for a tax bracket of 39%. So that would be an underestimate at 33 1/3%. But your wrong but smug answer did serve a pointless purpose.
-
is incredible.
-
ah, I see...I still think that complaining about the loss of tax revenue when people want to donate to relief efforts for people DYING UNDER COLLAPSED BUILDINGS is pretty cold-hearted and idiotic. but I see your math, now.also, it's "you're", not "your". nothing derails your argument worse than trying to make a point and failing 3rd grade grammar in the process.
-
Account for my language issues. Or was it my iPhone spellcheck?
-
Knox them over with gold not earthquakes.
-
And heal the wounded-- send more and more.
-
Go paper go.
-
1. The Haitians blame the Cubans for the earthquake. 2. They may not be wrong.
-
Fuck that- Iran's 30 metric tons= about 15 carloads worth of stuff. Big deal. The US is sending that much on an hourly basis. And China's 4.4 million- oh wow! This from a country with a GNP of $7.98 trillion. Hope that check doesn't bounce...
-
Good call.
-
From what i understand it's some sorta political beef China has with Haiti.Apparently, Haiti doesn't recognize China as the people's republic. They only recognize Taiwan. So China is still pissed about that. Originally they only sent 1 million in aid but after the got a public shaming (especially since they have the 2nd largest economy in the world) they bumped it up and sent aid workers as well. Just FYI.
-
You do realize Haiti is in the USA's backyard? It's easier, quicker and cheaper to send stuff to Haiti from say...i dunno...MIAMI than Iran. Which is almost half a world away.
-
and the company I work for matched my donation 100%. I went through an earthquake back in the 1970's in California, and I can still remember that day like it was yesterday. That is some scary shit indeed.
-
Self-centered, tea-bagging bullshitter.George Clooney isn't getting a boost off the horrible situation in Haiti. He's just putting his mug on a telethon because - imagine - one of the best ways to get the attention of an uneducated, overweight, nose-picking American populace is with a pretty face. What's it matter if Kate Fucking Gosselin gets up there?Money is needed for Haiti. So is expertise and lots of time. And that's just to dig them out of a deep hole and get them back to square one - as an impoverished, desperate nation.Good Christ, shut your gob. Nobody is taking money out of your pocket. No one is even asking you to be moved to action, you heartless little worm.America is flushing itself down the toilet by caving into the corporate interests of the fuckers who almost sent us into a Second Great Depression. That's not an act of God. We deserve what we get. To bitch about your situation in comparison to Haiti is immensely evil.

Yeah whatever- and if that were the US's stance we'd be crucified in the press. But how many editorials have you read about China's cheapness? Instead it's France telling us we're occupying Haiti. F-you it's called securing a full scale riot dickheads. Maybe you'd prefer we just send text messages only... GAWD.

well put Subtitles... Clooney is using his celebrity wisely
by stifler's mom
The guy is using his celebrity to get lazy, pompous, TMZ-watching Americans to wake up and pay just a little bit of attention to what's going in in the world... AND he still finds time to make great movies... all of you lazy right-wing haters should just get over your transparent celebrity envy and acknowledge a selfless act when you see it...
-
I am taking a pot shot in the dark to assume you aren't here in the USA.. If you are then I am guessing you think I am whining about my "situation" which I am not nor have I. Big talk on an internet forum from a usual fuckwit this day in age where the keyboard is some kind of gun.
Seriously my opinion is mine, I don't act like the fools out there thinking the earthquake didn't happen (lunar landing morons as example). I am someone who gets the fact they need help, but instead of tossing money at them like a cheap stripper working a pole we should be doing more, the UN is turning well trained groups, I don't see airlines offering free airfairs to Haiti or alternative routes for people to get there and help in person. No instead it's "donate donate donate" sorry but I won't toss cash at something I have no guarantees will make it from point A to point B. -
They are providing FREE ENTERTAINMENT while we all sit on our ass and WISH WE COULD HELP BUT CAN'T. At least, MOST OF US wish we could help....the ones with a conscience. I hope most of you sourpuss types are 12 year olds...that MIGHT excuse it
-
I am outraged that the "Hope for Haiti" benefit isn't being shown on Noggin and Nick Jnr., like it seemingly is on every other channel in the western hemisphere. Moose, Z, Dora, Diego, and the rest of them have shown themselves to be the selfish and callous bastards that we always thought them to be.
-
he eats for a day; teach him to fish he eats all year." That a wonderful proverb except when you have no net, no house, no clothes, no family & no legs.
-
You would know that American Airlines is providing free airfare for doctors and nurses to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Also Haiti's airport only has one working runway so not everyone is gonna be able to get down there which may be why they have to turn away certain groups.
-
why has there been no mention of any major international food or medical companies steping up to help out? I think its great for every day people to help out but with an event of this size would it not be faster for someone such as General Mills or some other company to come foward to donate and deliever a massive amount food and other aid?
-
Hell, I'd be surprised if many of the actors on this even knew where it was prior to this. Not saying that this isn't a good cause, but the piousness of Hollywood at these kinds of things just makes me feel ill. Better have The Arcade Fire on though.
-
"Saint Bruce" was pretty insufferable, but Stevie Wonder is fucking owning "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" right now!
-
a scam. AA does have a link set up on their site for Red Cross donations and reduced prices/elevated flier miles with donations.
-
When in fact, a healthy amount of shame can do wonders for douchbagginess. They should have a telethon for that. Hope for Douchebags. We can find a cure in our lifetime.

by thehouseoflearneddoctors
Pretty cool...

People are people and they need help no matter they ways or means it gets there. I'm thinking some of the feebleminded on this site would take a bunch of bulldozers and push the rubble, bodies and everything else off into the ocean and put a big ass Wal-Mart Distribution center where Haiti once stood. Hurts man.
-
(Anheuser-Busch) was putting water into aluminum cans to ship to Haiti. That's a big company helping out.
-
but more will be needed..soon! Could not some of these massive cargo ships loaded with food not be sent now?
-
Tomorrow?
-
This is horrible.
-
Only when the world bands together and combine resources can disasters like this be mitigated. The country is virtually without infrastructures of any kind.
-
Or more, each. And that's the right thing for them to do with all the money they make. And you wanna bag on Bruce, come talk to me - I'll give you my address - and my cancer-fighting body can still take you down.

when some of us have our bs meter turned up so high we stop sensing sincerity. This is love, people. Deal with it.

Or other Muslim nations? Of course not. They're more selfish and worse with haves and have-nots than we are. If I'm off on them helping, please do bring this to light.

LOL do you have an Emily in real life? I meant Emily Blunt, who's taking calls on the telethon ...

How can you possibly complain about missing a stupid TV show or compare your pathetic problems to the horrific situation in Haiti? Or about celebrities using their celebrity for humanitarian reasons? You spoiled pukes wouldn't last a day in the unspeakable conditions those people are suffering in right now. Buried alive, bones broken, unbearably painful injuries with no medical help, dead bodies everywhere, no food or water or shelter or money. Some of you egocentric bastards need to pull your heads out of your asses and do some real soul searching. Jesus Fucking Christ.

I would have asked him to call me Sugartits. And if he had done so, I would have doubled my donation. Sadly, I was not at home so I couldn't do this. :(
-
The amount of money our government is giving to this cause is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compared to what they WASTE on a daily basis. So long as you can go to the store and buy what you want, or go to the theater, or fill your car with gas, etc etc, none of that matters to you. Our government is a bloated, largely unnecessary, mess of confusion and ineptitude. Giving a paltry amount to help Haiti, regardless of what it does to our deficit, means nothing in the grand scheme of things. If you think it does you're more deluded than they are (our "leaders", that is). And if you have a problem with individuals in our great country choosing to donate their hard earned money to the cause, quite honestly, fuck you. It's none of your damn business what I do with my money after the government has taken my taxes.
-
How sad is it that we appear to be in the minority?
-
How many of the other networks airing this are owned by Disney? Get a clue, dude.
-
"offering a helping hand, in any way shape or fashion, is the very definition of humanity" True, but then the US government has been stealing from me and giving to worthless shit-holes like Haiti for years. Voluntary giving is one thing, collectivism is quite another.
-
Yeah, but the anonymity of the internet makes people think a) that they can say whatever they want, and b) that doing so makes them hip and cool. Unfortunately they don't realize (and probably don't care) that it actually makes them look like uncaring, uneducated asses.
-
No, it doesn't make them look like uncaring, uneducated asses. It reveals them to be such.
-
Time for a munchies run. Wait, how can I eat Doritos when Haiti is all being Haiti down there. I totally charged my phone with energy that could have been conserved for Haiti relief. I am such a dick for using that burnt coal or natural gas for this post. That is a non-renewable resource that we can never get back. Wasted because of this asshole post. Not powering a Caterpillar or shipping a bottle of water, or purifying that bottle or water to begin with. If I could only be more caring and see the errors of my ways.
-
The Disney channel, and has a larger reach? You are really streatching to misplace that anger buddy. Focus that energy on positive things. Help your community. Are you a Big Brother/Sister? Why not?
-
to help the people of haiti.
-
let me tell you... those children... who's parents are dead... they need your help... fuck politics... just be human and give if you can
-
Thank you so much for supporting a cause that is going to cause dozens of fantastic smaller community charities to fold bythe end of 2010. It happened after 9/11, and Katrina. The Red Cross swooped in and nabbed big bucks from givers that would have donated to their churches and local food banks. Because of these large fundraisers, summer lunch programs for kids, libraries, parks, and other orginazations will fold. Guess what happens when nonprofits fold. People lose jobs. Guess what happens when people lose jobs. The economy goes into recession. What happened is tragic. As tragic as things can be, but expenses upon expenses to raise money is nonsense. Tom Hanks brags on the Tonight show that he is getting a police escort to the fundraiser. In the Bankrupt state of California. Please bother to look big picture, and realize that this is one of the more intellegent web sites out there. There is a lot of jest. It does get political. But challenging somebody's soul because they do not fall in line for the Hollywood elite makes fails to make you superior in any way.
-
For these kids so they have a pretty egg at 21.
-
particularly the hook with Rhianna and Bono. Good harmonies.
-
Relief went to helping the victims of 9/11. The rest got tied up or disappeared.
-
Why did you address me and what are you talking about? That was my point. It doesn't matte that it's not on Disney because it WAS on ABC. And what are YOU doing? Are YOU a big brother/sister? What have YOU ever done? Oh wait, I'm sorry, nobody here cares! They just want to complain about how donating doesn't help. I think your braincells are a little misplaced.
-
The money you donate will go to talkback causes such as Narcissism, ADD, OCD, CAPITAL LETTER SYNDROM, Complete Sketchiness & All Around Lame (AAL).
Only you can prevent littering. Give hoot; don't start forest fires. There is no "I" in 'team' but there is an "I" in pie. And eveyone deserves pie. -
5 dollars? You are on the internet, aren't you? Unless you are some public library user - god bless you - give the Red Cross the amount of money you spend on 3 packages of gum.
"But..I don't know where my money is going! If I give the monetary equivant of 3 packs of gum, worldwide acknowlegded charities might screw me...I mean, it might screw the people I want to help!"
The leg you think you are standing on? Explain it to the kid who just lost his. -
Me and the Wifey made a donation via red cross and I made an extra donation through Mercy Corps courtesy of Amazon.comI applaud Clooney and the others for their heroic efforts, but It's obvious that there is a lack of stability within the hatian government as elected officials are likely to exploit their own people via taking more than there share while leaving the populace in a downward spiral of poverty.Fuggin shame!
-
Amnesty granted, you're forgiven.
-

You heard it here first, people...competition is bad.
Unless you're complaining about Starbucks putting your favorite local coffeeshop out of business, in which case, you're a commie daydreamer trying to obstruct the "Free Market". -
is reason enough not to.
-
I already donated so get off my ass. This may be harsh, but I'm over the Haiti thing. Let's take all that money we are sending to a corrupt third world shit hole and put it into food for our homeless, education, strenghtening jobs programs, in other words into the US. We are in massive debt, yet we are constantly coming to the aid of everyone else while the other rich first world countries, like China and the oil rich middle east countries, sit on their asses. Enough it enough.
-
brobdingnag, you're not donating because "liberals" want you to? And you don't like "liberals"? So the actual issue itself — tens of thousands of innocent people dead, thousands of children now homeless and orphaned — doesn't matter to you as much as some phony expression of political outrage?
Jack Burton, you're "over the Haiti thing"? The "Haiti thing"? I'm sure you spent many sleepless nights agonizing over how you could best apply your intelligence and generosity to help the innocent people whose lives have been destroyed by this completely random catastrophe before realizing that you were "over it." How long would you say you spent thinking about it before realizing you were over it? Was a traumatic event in your life? Do you think you'll be okay? I know this has been hard for you.
Of course, in reality, nobody cares what you think about this or how you feel, or whether or not you're "over it." The only thing that matters is what you're willing to do about it. In your case, nothing. A small, obligatory donation doesn't mean the issue is over, if you made one at all. Anyone who has the capacity to say "I'm over the Haiti thing" wouldn't hesitate to lie about making a donation. But there's no need for me to speculate about your actions; your post says everything about you that anyone could ever want to know.
"Enough it enough" indeed. Yes, rather than worrying needlessly about thousands of homeless, injured orphans sleeping on the streets of Haiti, let's focus on "jobs programs" in the U.S. (The fact that you pulled "jobs programs" out of your ass to make some hackneyed, fake political argument made me laugh out loud). -
But in a tragedy of this magnitude, you should be able to look past politics and simply do what's right.
-
Let's see where Haiti will be in a few years after this. Sadly, where they probably were a few years back. In the same miserable place after pissing away the billions of U.S. dollars they've been getting for decades. Now that's "pathetic".
-
eeer sorry liberate Haiti from the corrupt governmental system and establish a healthy democracy? you know like they did with ira/afghanistan,they started a war to free those countires,FOR FREEDOM.so why not Haiti too?
-
Sadly, Mr Incredible you may be right. But that's no reason at all not to give every possible aid to the people there.
And ominus...I didn't know an earthquake was the equivalent of despotic, oppressive rule with ties to jihadist activities.
I guess it surprises you that America would even bat an eye at Haiti since they have no natural resources we can exploit. Thank God for people like Clooney, Dave Matthews and Neil Young...without them Haiti would be fucked right?
-
Regardless of where you think Haiti may or may not be in a few years (and I'm sure you're quite the expert on the subject), or whether the pain and suffering of Haitian people is therefore deemed acceptable or interesting to you, right now there are thousands of homeless, injured children in that country because of a random earthquake. So it doesn't matter that "Mr Incredible" thinks he has an opinion about anything, or that "Jack Burton" decided he's "over the Haiti thing" (and presumably ready to move on to more interesting news, like "Iron Man 6" or whatever.)
You can try to help, or you can come up with one pathetic excuse after another. Or, you can parrot right-wing talking points you saw grown-ups say on TV. Just stop pretending that your failure to act, or even to show a modicum of basic human decency, is actually based on anything substantial.
There is truly nothing more "pathetic" than lazy, fake sentiments like those expressed on this message board. If only there was some kind of substance behind the phony outrage and mock indignation which is NOTHING more than an excuse for you not to have to donate a couple of dollars or devote even a moment of contemplation over a catastrophe that has killed tens of thousands of innocent people. Instead, you do nothing, all while finding the most vapid, meaningless justification for your apathy.
If you don't care, fine. Just don't pretend to have a valid reason for it. -
I was very inconvenienced by the telethon, it was on too many channels.
-
I imagine she was on the ground, conducting search and rescue operations and directing food delivery in remote areas.
-
What alleged "right wingers" are disparaging any efforts in Haiti?
Or are you just manufacturing "phony outrage"?

If only that would have happened. I'm preeeeetty sure GW didn't have a hand in this one. I guess with what Pat Robertson said that N'awlens deserved Hurricane Katrina because of all the voodoo that they dooo

I was referring to sentiments like those expressed in David Brooks' recent New York Times editorial in which he provides several nonsensical reasons why we shouldn't really donate money to Haiti because of the inherent inferiority of the Haitian people.
I was also referring to Pat Robertson's inane comments about how the earthquake is a result of the Haitians' "deal with the devil." It therefore follows that they deserve it, which is an underlying sentiment I detect in a lot of conservative-leaning comments.
And Rush Limbaugh's statements in which, rather than telling his audience how to help, accuses President Obama of trying to use this tragedy to bolster support among black people in the U.S. (What a disgusting pig Limbaugh is.)
Or Glenn Beck's bile about how the U.S. government should provide security forces only (no money).
And on and on. Stuff like that gets trickled down onto message boards like this, where we end up with comments like "I'm like so over the Haiti thing," and "The fact that liberals want me to donate is reason enough not to." -

...They've been showing double episodes lately, so I'm sure we'll get a double dose of new Smallville next Friday. ;-)

I think I love you. thanks for expressing so clearly what so many of us were feeling reading this talkback thread.the idea that because america is in a recession, we shouldn't donate to help the poorest country in the western hemisphere deal with an unspeakable tragedy is beyond my understanding. I'm a pretty solid lower middle class single guy, without much money to my name, and I found a way to donate $100. it ain't much, but it means, what? 2 nights I was gonna go out to the bars with friends that I stay in instead? is that so tough?almost anyone (at least anyone well to do enough to have internet access, see movies, etc.) can find a little bit to give to help the less fortunate. if you don't WANT to, that's fine, but as Corman says, own up to it. just say, "I'm sorry, my life and my Netflix account is more important than people dying by the side of a trash heap in Haiti."honestly, don't any of you have the stones to say that? the tortured and inane logic you're trying to manufacture in order to justify not caring about this tragedy is completely transparent.
-
Normally, I like you, but right now I have to own you, sorry my friend.
Commence pwnag3!
"I'm a pretty solid lower middle class single guy, without much money to my name, and I found a way to donate $100. it ain't much, but it means, what? 2 nights I was gonna go out to the bars with friends that I stay in instead? is that so tough?"
Oh, Wonka, you classic West Wing Watching bleeding heart richy rich Liberal. $100 budget for 2 nights out on the town. Your so poor, MrWonka..... Jesus Christ! I haven't eaten out in a diner for over a year, no fucking TGI Fridays for me Wonka. I'm trying to put food on the table, I rarely go clubbing. Huge sacrifice dude.

'Cancel ur internet d00d!' is a fucking bullshit statement.
Internet and phone are necessary utilities asshole, especially when you, ya know, need internet for work?
...
BTW I just canceled my Cable AND Blockbuster online, all I have is an antenna now, and guess what the only thing I had to watch was last night, SAVE HAITI. America is a trash heap, so the whole "Use ur netflix while people starve in trash heaps LOL" defense is retarded. -
As a good, red-blooded, angry right-winger myself, I am pretty shocked that you would want to just hand Haiti over to folk like Cuba, Venezuela and France. Poor as it is, Haiti is a strategic and economic partner in the western hemisphere. To abandon the country would be a major strategic blunder.
-
first off, I love the WEst Wing!
I didn't say that anyone should get rid of their internet, I'm not sure where you're getting that from. I simply meant that since we're all here, and we're all film geeks and whatnot, none of us are likely to be single moms on welfare with ZERO disposable income, that's all. -
oops, typed the paragraph break incorrectly.
my $100 example was AN EXAMPLE. it wasn't meant to be me. sorry that wasn't clear. I gave more than that, not that it's any of your business.and I don't know what you're talking about with the internet stuff. I didn't say anyone should give up their internet. I was simply implying that since we're all here, and we have internet, and we're film geeks, none of us are likely to be single moms on welfare with ZERO disposable income. that's all.and I just chose netflix as one of the hundreds of little amenities that we all indulge in. and if you decide that it's not worth it for you to donate, then (like it or not) you're saying those amenities are more important. I mean, I didn't sell my car to give $20,000 to Haiti, did I? so, in essence, I'm saying that my car is more important to me.the overall point of which is this: it is pretty unreasonable for someone to be expected to give up their car or their house or whatever to donate to Haiti (though I'm sure some have)...but the people who can't be bothered to give even $10 or $20, for whatever tortured ideological reasoning their addled brains can muster, are beyond petty. they're just cold-hearted assholes. -

Anyone noticed how fast the response to Hait has been...
by hollywoodhellraiser
compare to the slow response for America's 9/11 and Katrina victims???I don't begrudge the help Hait is receiving because I find that to be a good thing, but it just seem like when America is hit with something terrible, we have to go it alone.
-
You are a douche. Your ideology confirms you and your kind (right wingers) are complete retards with no sense of humanity. No one cares what your opinions are, especially when they negate an attempt to help people who are suffering in a way that you obviously have no conception or sensitivity for. Helping the less fortunate ie. these Haitians thankfully has meant alot to alot of people. So please do us a favor and shut that little shit spewing hole the fuck up, and go sit in the corner. You right wing douchebags have done enough damage to this world already.
-
it's "Haiti", actually...
-
About aid not coming to America..not the spelling of Haiti.
-
where was the millions of dollars from Haiti after 9/11?!you guys are morons...
-
Some balls to call that illiterate gibberish a rant. "WHERES MY TELETHON FAGGOTZ." I'm a Canadian, so you may want to discredit me based on my inherent lack of that Yankee gene, but why does the concept of empathy seem so foreign to American conservatives? Yeah, I think it's odd that a percentage of these rich liberal actors, known to be rather rude and condescending in their daily lives, suddenly find a heart when the shit hits the fan halfway across the world. But rather than be angry at the celebrities, I'd be more disappointed that rounding up a bunch of fucking actors is what it takes to galvanize the population into donating toward a worthy cause. And it's not like there's gonna be a "Hope for Self-Entitled White Trash" telethon, so go hit Workopolis and try to curse the darkies in private.
-
Conservatives are the most charitable people there are. But judging from this talkback I'm not convinced.
-
"it is pretty unreasonable for someone to be expected to give up their car or their house or whatever to donate to Haiti (though I'm sure some have)"
Seriously? You think people have given up their car or home to donate to Haiti? You're delusional. -
"...but the people who can't be bothered to give even $10 or $20, for whatever tortured ideological reasoning their addled brains can muster, are beyond petty. they're just cold-hearted assholes."
What makes this tragedy any different than the countless other tragedies constantly going on in the world? Why does this deserve my money, attention, or sympathy more than the other horrible things going on? -
let's do nothing instead ok? In that case you can bitch and moan about no one doing anything. Why is this tragedy more exposed than others around the world? I have no clue, but I for one can appreciate people trying to help. If there is a situation elsewhere you are concerned about, try to help just a little bit. Find a website where you can donate something, find an organisation that you can can support any way. Not all gestures have to be big.
-
"Seriously? You think people have given up their car or home to donate to Haiti? You're delusional."
I'm sure someone out there has been moved enough to do something like that. I'm sure it wasn't a cynical internet douchebag, but you know..maybe a real person."What makes this tragedy any different than the countless other tragedies constantly going on in the world? Why does this deserve my money, attention, or sympathy more than the other horrible things going on?"
I didn't say it did. not sure what that has to do with anything. but don't let reality get in the way of your indignation!

Well, seeing as I've spent a New York winter out in a small vinyl tent along the Hudson River already in my lifetime...The Earthquake Fast-Track-to-Home Ownership Plan is mighty appealing to me...Jackpot for the Haitians (I mean, really, what makes the Haitians any more helpless, vulnerable or innocent then I am?...I'm sure there's plenty of charm, paranoia and misanthropy amongst Haitians...That's how people like Mao Tse Tung are able to kill Chinese..Even Abraham Lincoln was able to slaughter Americans with a little show of dash and "empathy") But let me explain a few basic differences ..One: The elements in New York are far more severe...In below zero temperatures the chances of falling to sleep and freezing to death are REAL...As real as taking a bullet...Even more real, because you HAVE to sleep...So that risk I knew that every time I closed my eyes....Shitty thing to know in 2006 USA.....Not so in Haiti...Actually it's quite mild there, so going without a roof is not quite as life threatening...(Maybe I should fly to Haiti and partake of the donations...Jay-Z would be proud...Wait a minute, I'm not black..No one would believe that I too have faced devastation...albeit a long and manipulated one..No Shock and Awe..)..Now, In New York, I couldn't use fire, (the logical remedy to that life threatening situation) because I couldn't draw "attention" to myself and I couldn't afford to move because I was near to the Labor Ready office that was providing me with work to feed myself...So I stayed out there in the freeze rather then be subjected to the involuntary proselytizing that was required at the shelters, (I also thought it perverse to have a preacher singing Springsteen's "Racing in the Streets" in "mass" one morning...A song basically about being a C1nt head)...I bet ya that's near the same reasoning the pilgrims used in searching for America, but I can't speak for them...It's repulsive to my education and sensibilities that the shelters in Schenectady, New York made you praise Jesus and admit you've done something wrong in life...When personally, I have no criminal record... worked a great deal in the labor industry...paid my taxes..Don't use drugs...Despise drug dealers, crooks, and liars and cheaters...Did well in school...Haven't knocked anyone up, so I have no child custody issues....No marriage..No divorces...Mostly I worked alone very hard on a very thin line for a very long time, making many relevant sacrifices to keep myself clean-nosed and decent..But for who?..Bruce Springsteen?...Haitians? Myself..or my neighbor? In fact the only reasons I can point to as to why I've had no success in this later stage of my life and that I can produce some actual amount of evidence towards, is the fact that after I went to film school and mingled within the circles and associates these a-holes in the entertainment industry conspire by, they began to TARGET and impede my ability to prosper to protect their own interests and positions....Thus Haitians are more important then Americans because there's no conflict of interest in throwing your money and wealth at Haitians, is there?...There's no immediate effect on Hollywood propriety with Haiti....It would take a long time for Haitians to be threatening to their franchises, especially if you are, say, a film studio who's main client (or yer tap into the middle class female sensibilities) is George Clooney....Haitians have a good reason temporaily to be grateful, probably many of even the dead ones do......Whereas if I, as an American citizen with quite effective tools at competing within those same "free" markets, was allowed to make a fool out of Springsteen, (drawing attention to myself), or Clooney, or now someone like Jay-Z(a known criminal, so he' owes these record industries and media outlets for giving him a break essentially...That's how and where he's been compromised on the leash.) in those markets, that would be "devastating" for them..sending "shockwaves" throughout their "worlds".....And why could I make fools out of them, well, I don't owe these f*cks anything...That's why....NOTHING...In fact, my citizenship, my labor, my conscientiousness at following law and order and respecting my neighbor paid for all of that....They actually OWE ME!...And they are selling me short, by helping those who have the most to gain from their benevolence because they have contributed the least to that social contract...I've kept my end of the deal as an American citizen....So if an earthquake should squash these celebrity goons flat in one of their numerous mansions, or F*ck hotels while I slave away in good intent and honor the social contract and make the sacrifices necessary in maintaining such rule as they leach off of me like parasites...I do this, yet still have no roof over over my head that I can call my own..Quite obviously,....in the US, I could welcome that F'in earthquake to level the playing field with these goons.... Hallelejuah! I think any Haitian without a roof over their own head will probably feel that same way about their own goons..."God is good...There was no roof that smashed my skull open on this day, like it did my unworthy neighbors...They pay for the evil they have shown their own"...
By the way, today in China, I have to get rid of my dog because I can provide it no stable and reliable home..but I need to clarify about this dog though...It was an act of charity on my part here in China to take him in and hand him over to a nearby Buddhist Temple. By handing him to the Temple, I honestly alleviate the burden of selling my allegiences short...Still I do not trust to the fullness of my heart that even the Buddhists will protect this dog from harm, I could only trust myself and even then I even needed to harm the dog to protect the both of us...This was the first dog I ever raised and I found it's disposition and loyalties falling far shorter then those my parents had taught me to expect from such animals, and I reasoned by accepting less, I sell my parents investment and expectations short...in the bigger affects, I sell the moral standards of the US short really. By raising it thus far regardless of those preferences, I lose my investment in the animal by giving it away and not killing and eating it myself which is not a foreign custom for the Chinese..nor mankind. In fact if a Chinese person can perceive they are gaining a meal at my expense...Basically that's a step up for them, and one down for me...I lose...Much like a Haitian might perceive gaining US Dollars at America's expense....I don't think the Chinese, nor the Haitians are naive to such petty calculations, (Nor is the Media/Entertainment Industry)..I do believe Americans have lost their sensibilities to such though and that is primarily what is being cultivated and exploited in these "telethons".
I would consider going to Haiti to assist with my labors but I would expect just compensation. That is honorable, regardless, for it maintains balance....Otherwise if an act or thing does not cross my path, then I was not intended to attend to it...It is not my test..Not my journey..I am grateful for that..And I will not accept mechanized projections as viable factors to said equation...Flesh was not designed in this way..There is more sense in one's existence then what media, empathy or projection offers. -
I'm actually a liberty-vegan-pagan, with some nihilism and hipster irony thrown in for good measure.
RE: WONKA: Sorry for trolling you mate, I just couldn't resist. I know you like West Wing btw, and that you enjoy wine and teaching literature. We have talked before but I unlike you can't keep handles for more than a year before I get banned LOL. Usually by Herc, I threatened him by saying I hope he gets AIDS and he banned me. Like I was really gonna give him eAIDS or something? And I don't even have AIDS. What a dumbfuck.
RE: OTHER TB'ers: Wow, you guys fall for troll bait easy, CLASSIC! I just wanted to make the right wingers look bad, mission accomplished LOL. I also knew all the l33t speak would piss off the older folk, too! -

But . . . "Hugo Chavez has already claimed on tv that the earthquake was caused by a US 'tectonic weapon'."If the U.S. did have some sort of secret tectonic earthquake weapon, that would be so totally bad ass.

Not in the single or double digits either. I chose the organization I gave to carefully and encourage others to do the same. That said, I agree with the notion that even if I didn't give, I still gave. Obeyme has sent money. In order for the government to give to someone, it must take from someone else. The fed's coffers are filled with contributions from taxpayers like me. This is not left-wing, right-wing; it's logic. And Obeyme is politicizing the relief effort just by interjecting himself further into the issue than the office requires. He's a narcissist and can't help it.I don't listen to Limbaugh, but I read on a blog somewhere that he phrased his words similarly to what Mormon Harry Reid was so quickly pardoned for around the same time. I'm not surprised people didn't look further into the talking points the lame stream media provided them. On the other hand, I do catch Beck now and then. I didn't hear about what he said and will have to look into it. On the surface, I can't say I disagree with it, though. Our government mismanages aid in ways that private charities do not. I'd rather see government aid take the form of our military restoring peace while our private charities do their thing instead of have it be directed into the coffers of the warlords.http://abcnews.go.com/2020/sto ry?id=2682730&page=1

to be more charitable. But that's only if you count being charitable with your own money. If you count being charitable with other people's money--tax dollars, donation, grants--then liberals are way more generous than conservatives.
But I don't think all the anti-Haitian-relief people here are otherwise conservatives. I think you're making a false assumption. And some of it is cynicism--rightly or wrongly, some people don't trust Hollywood and don't trust charities. The Red Cross had, at one point, allocated a large portion of 9/11 donations for redecorating. Including some might fancy office furniture. Which is fine, I understand wanting to redecorate, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't mentioned when they were soliciting donations.
So, while the folks dubious of the Red Cross and other charitable organizations may be jackasses, it's not like the charitable organizations haven't don't anything to earn some cynicism in most cases.
All a working joe has to do in order to work up a good head of cynicism regarding almost any charity or non-profit is to look at what the top brass gets paid, and what kind of money is spent on seminars, junkets, new offices, remodeling, etc. It's a little disheartening.Still, I don't discourage anyone from donating to the charity of their choice. Be it The Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, or the George Clooney Emergency Ego fund. Just kidding. George Clooney is awesome. O Brother Where Art Though is a frickin' great movie. -
First, I need to get another keyboard. This Macally thing is about the worst in the world for accidentally hitting the return key. Which ends up posting, if you're still in the subject line. Ugh!
But my point was, that's an awesome line. "DON'T BE HAITERS" . . . there's a reason why BSB earns bi-partisan respect from Talkbackers around the globe, and is known as America's International Ambassador of Sexy. Don't be Haiters. Love it. -
any statistic that shows conservatives as more charitable must be including religious donations. SOME of which actually go to the needy, and some of which go to, well..do you see all the bling that televangelists got going on? not to mention their gold studded thrones...
-
And what he was doing was tweaking the MSM about Harry Reid, again. In my opinion, he oughta drop it, but the whole "build up credibility with light and dark skin blacks" was an intentional tweak to what he sees as the acceptable racism of liberals.Mixing said point--about the quick absolution of Harry Reid, compared to a George Allen--has it's place, I suppose, but probably not regarding the reaction to Haiti. But it really doesn't matter what Obama does on any issue, Limbaugh is going to attack him. When his reaction his been at least as good as Bush's reaction to Katrina. And Limbaugh didn't have a problem with that.
-
So, unless Lifeblood is a church . . . But, yes, I'm sure it involves religious giving, but I'm not sure that includes church support, which is usually separate from missionary work, food drives, etc.

... a way to outrun any secret American earthquake weapon.
So really, why bother developing one? -
Be John Cusack. It's the only way!
-
And by Americans at that! We have millions of black and white AMERICAN kids that needs adopting and yet this influx of adopting Haitian kids since the dieaster is sickening me!Let me say, the reason AMERICAN black and white kids aren't being adopted by more AMERICANS is because they aren't foreign enough! So AMERICANS rather adopt a foeigh than one of their own! This shit sicken me!Again AMERICANS rather take care of foreign people than their own!
-
if you're indifferent, or 'over Haiti', I doubt you would be if you were standing next to a pile of kids with missing limbs and no anasthesia, bandages, or water. You're overthinking it... it's about basic human decency, not politics. And if I donate $50 and $10 gets to the people who need it, then it was worth it. If I want to complain about it, well then you better commit your life to figuring out how to fix the administrative bottleneck when it comes to getting donations where they need to go. Otherwise, shut the fuck up, give and do what you can, and realize that if $5 gets to those people who need it in the form of medical care or basic necessities, they're not going to ask, "Where's the other $5?" They're going to be happy someone actually gave a shit. I realize that this is a big issue, but it's something easier solved before or after the disaster, not during, by refusing to give.
-
those damn, dirty liberal hollywood elitists! all they did was raise $57 million dollars in one night? what a vanity exercise!
-
Cuz if you are, you can admit it. It's okay.
-
Indeed. No pomp nor circumstance. Just like my own contribution. /sarcasmAs was mentioned here earlier, these people could have delivered that much money, collectively, all on their own. And they wouldn't have felt it. Not like those of us 1 out of 10 who are unemployed. Is it a bad thing they did this? Of course not. Well, I guess that's kinda dependent upon how they money is spent, but I'm willing to be optimistic. Maybe their own contributions aren't considered part of the tally? Maybe they matched average joe contributions? Why do we hold such reverence for leftist Hollowood contributions vs. those that are corporate donations? Lockheed Martin gave the same amount George Clooney did. I know, I know... one is much more icky than the other. And yet, one employs WAY more than the other.
-
And that's seansarto's KA-RAZY post. Did any of you read that thing? It's got the length of Lord Of The Rings mixed with the politics of Rorschach off his meds.
-
you got me figured out buddy. I'm George Clooney. I have nothing better to do with my time than find the ONE PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE where people can raise $57 million dollars for charity and have self-important assholes deride them for it.I can't get enough! (tilts head to the side)
-
I just get a very suave, "I'm a Dapper Dan Man" kind of vibe of you.

I ignore 10 page posts without a single paragraph break just on general principle. If it's formated like seansarto's, I don't read it.

Thanks for your comments and for your own excellent posts in response to some of the nonsense on this thread, some of which is just borderline sociopathic. I mean, how else can you interpret, “Help yourself. If you can’t, too bad.” What a courageous statement from a real hero. (I can’t imagine what his political leanings are.)
Anyway, the exchange of ideas on this thread has been interesting, but not in the way that an actual debate or discussion is interesting. It’s been more like an “interesting” visit to a lunatic asylum. Nobody advocating an “anti-donating” position has made a single comprehensible point. Forget “good” or “eloquent” — I’m talking about “comprehensible.” It’s all just total gibberish.
Like the guy who pretended to be upset about the tax implications of donating, or the guy who pretended to care about the unusually high rate of U.S. adoptions of Haitian children, or the guy who wondered why this particular tragedy “deserves” his money, attention, or sympathy. That kind of idiocy speaks for itself. -
Whoa..."Elephant"?....My pacidermitude ain't so girthed...Can still slip through them small spaces when I need to....Gets it's job done and I'm content with that....But I know if I called my outfit the "Big Package Tour" I could at least exploit a lotta latent homosexuality in the perceptions of other domesticated beasts....I'm just not that carnival nor cruel...Not like Gus Van Sant....That being said, I guess I'm wondering where one reconciles the degrees of separation between a telethon for the unfortunate and someone who purposefully maims a child so it has more empathic value in street vagrancy?...Or what transparency is there considering something like the video of the beheading of Daniel Pearl...The very recognition of the video created a public prurient stir and I'm sure there was a rating surge for whatever media outlet that chose to air even just portions of it,(Which, in reading of the Espionage Act of 1917, seems a pretty clear violation ). In airing the video, regardless of known boundaries, it sanctioned an appalling dynamic...The Taliban created ratings, which creates corporate interest in advertising, which empowers the networks, who then take their excesses and create charitable foundations,("Wish You Were One of US"), which supposedly justify airing the video...Basically the Taliban is helping make the dreams of the cancer-stricken child who wants to meet Michael Jackson or something like that come true using the equation of "Shock and Awe" as an outlet for influence..."See Junior, we take a bad thing and make a good thing out of it!"...In their case, chopping off the heads of a few martyrs for the "cause"...It's a compromise being made.....Of course, since there is a public prurient interest being exploited concerning the video, even more opportunity is realized when further "justitfication" and clarification is contrived in the form of a film which also happens to showcase the "talents" of Angelina Jolie. Would you like a boner with your beheading?...Look at what love does....All that slasher flick shit...thats' the compromise...Beast in a cage ..Reminds me of in "Borat" when he talks about how one of his female relatives taunted a retarded male relative with her vagina until he broke out and raped her...
A very unpleasant dynamic...
Anyways, engaging these events on such a level...in analysis and experience...I kinda figured the conception of "sanity" is merely a litmus test for forming "clubs"...in this case it is the sensibilities of America's buffering zone, or what the America economic structure calls the middle class...that club...Your fellow "humanitarians" built the internet for you...and sites like this here...In terms of media, it is the "Can we do this and get away with it?" approach..Does it keep the the buffering zone intact?....Get outta that zone though and weigh yer "sanity" elsewheres, up or down, an' yer quick to find yer just peasantry same as anyone else...yer expendable, same as anyone else....yer news fodder, same as anyone else..and yer not so very well informed about it...yer not that strong or able...In fact, the day you were born you were, and will always be only those things, no matter what happens...Don't kid yerself...In nature, taking a shit is charity...Maybe to George's "relief"...it's the same. -
For paragraphs insert but without the spaces.

Thanks pal. I do my best. Glad you're not a haiter.

brass plate on the door this is the "Honorary Barrack Obama/George Clooney" stall!...Classy place! Geez..$1? I thought $5-$10 was the socially sanctioned private donation today...Dude, looks like you get the scarlet letter...Maybe it's because I'm "white"...Anyways yer gonna have to wire that to me...Just like gettin' those supplies to Haiti..That's gonna cost ya like another $20..Hope yer investment portfolio reflects stock in those companies "Cuz..this is boom time, Jay-Zeera baby!
Maybe you should just hold on to it, $1 ain't worth much in this war...It's no use ta work honest when you can't find honest work...When it find's it's value again, I'll let you know. -

Soldier: Plans?...I don't know, Dad...I don't really know yet..While I was over there..fighthin'...I saw people who stopped at nuthin'..They stopped at nuthin', Dad, connivin' ta compromise yer e'ry little move....
They thought of anythin' they could ....e'ry little last detail..you had ta cover yer ass so tight...it didn't jest stop with dyin'...they wanted e'vry last bit of a person's....attention...They wanted ya ta think like them...an' it's like that's how they beat ya...they wore ya down like that...forcin' you ta always consider 'em..
Dad: We'll I'm sure you've seen some pretty horrible stuff over there...an' I'm sorry fer that...Truly, am sorry...Me an' yer mother...we watched a lotta that stuff there on that television... Saw a lotta movies...So we know what ya we're goin' through...an' ya did us proud, son...we want ya ta know that..ya did us proud...
Soldier: Wha?
Dad:..Ya did us proud..an' if ya need any help...we're right here for ya...An' if ya want ta see a doctor to sort things out, that's fine by us...Yer mother an' I will gladly help pay fer that.....We been seein' on the television how alotta the boys get them PSD's commin' home...We heard a lotta 'bout that...an' we...
Soldier: PSD's? ..Are you shitting me?..You think I'm sick in the head now?
Dad: Hey, now..Watch yer mouth!..This is still my HOUSE..An' you don't talk to yer father like that in his HOUSE....Nobody does..I don't give a damn where you've been...
Soldier: You saw this all on yer TV? Dad...That's what I mean by the conniving bit.....It's like somehow they got to even you now Dad....You think I'm the "sicko"?...Buyin' "plasma screens", while I'm out there sheddin' blood for you?..I got a good question then? Did we put on a good "show"? Ya know, a "good show" but in the end the underdog's gotta win because that makes the better story?..More "moving"...More American?..How about this, then Dad? Where'd you get all the money for all the house "improvements", Dad?..Selln' me short?...Sellin' me off as jest "talent"? -
