So Who's Scoring THE WOLFMAN Again? Looks Like Elfman Is Back!
Greetings! ScoreKeeper serving up a little nugget I thought would be fun to digest. MovieScore Magazine is reporting that Danny Elfman is back on board THE WOLFMAN (2010) and Paul Haslinger, who replaced Elfman after his score was originally rejected, is now out.
Oh, this is going to be fun. At least I'm interested in this film again.

... to the trailer that ran in front of DAYBREAKERS a few weeks ago.
-
Hope Elfman gives a good score, he really needs to get back to his heyday - what happened to the guy who gave us Batman, Edward Scissorhands etc etc?
-
Not first, but fuck that - give me a good Elfman score!
-
I love when Elfman gives us truly organic mystical period compositions, and w the classic horror of WOLFM4N(had too) i am thrilled to hear it. woot for elfman...im sorry about your terrible spiderman experience with the last one
-
So, three weeks to mix and lock the new score, make prints and ship them out? That's not crazy at all.
-
Needs to learn how to make a fucking theme for the characters! That's why John Williams is great, associated music to the characters.
-
rushing things isn't a good idea. Anybody see Hellboy 2? Milk? Anybody?

Batman? Edward Scissorhands? Spider-Man? Sleepy Hollow's Ichabod Crane? Beetle Juice? Pee-Wee?
-
I think when any film starts pissing about with editing or music so close to release, its a bad sign. Leave the fuck alone & let it succeed or fail !

The Hellboy 2 score was painful. Took me out of the movie...
by JuanSanchez
multiple times. And it was nowhere near as good as the first movie, BTW.
-
I didn't think I could look forward to this film any more than I already did. Guess I was wrong!

Wow, this film has the most revolving doors ever!
by The Reluctant Austinite
Directors, editors, effects artists, release dates, screenplays, versions and composers! My head is spinning.
-
Paul Shaffer is to David Letterman.
-
i hope they replaced gene simmons and david lee roth as the wolfmans howl.
thats too much old and creepy for my ears.
-
All I know is that I could spot the Batman, Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Simpsons (etc etc) music from just a few bars, or even notes. I couldn't say the same about any of his recent scores really. How does Spiderman's 'theme' go? Beats me.
-
But Hellboy 2 music was just kinda there, pretty much the same way most Elfman scores are any more. I'm sure that Alice will be an ok score, Burton is the only one that seems to be able to get a good score out of him.
-
Do they? They fire one director. They fire some editors. They fire the composer. Then they bring back the original composer... Jeebus Christo, these guys are dumber than those in charge of NBC.
-
Anyone watching that one??
-
But only bc I've seen the movies so many times. Its def not as catchy as Batman, or Men in Black even (its closest musical cousin... must be a New York thing).

I heard the rumor Spiderman and X-Men had theme songs
by GibsonUSA Returns
but they were just utterly forgettable
-
...would have been my choice. Failing that, maybe Joby Talbot. His score for the little seen 'Franklyn' had atmosphere to spare; haunting, memorable melodies and classy.

-
They sure do know how to fire them and bring'em back! Idiots.
-
Danny Elfman - I'm so sure. Who wants oomp-pa Wolfman music??
-
If this fucker goes straight to video, I, for one, will be pissed. More pissed than a stupid Irishman who drank his wife's alcoholic-infused PISS, damnit.
-
Who gives a shit about (500) Days Of Wank? I mean, come in -- WE DEMAND CAMERON, damnit.
-
They will want a trilogy though, no doubt. Ofc they will fire Webb's ass if the first doesn't go down too well. Will 'focus on Peter's private life'. Maybe the time he had a beer, came home and gave Aunt May's ass the pounding it sorely needed on the stairs before Ben came home after cheating on his wife with an underage MJ?? Btw Ben and May will be considerably younger than usual, May being the 'hot mom' type of actress like Rebecca Romijn in Eastwick-type so fuckable but she's you're fuckin Aunt for fuck's sake!! but, you think, it's REBECCA ROMIJN FFS and pound her harder than ever (she needs it seeing as Eastwick got cancelled). Ben is played by Matt Damon, Spides by Stewie Griffin (Peter is the Green Goblin...oh yeah, oh yeah like, it's like that time Lois asked Dr. Octavius aka Doc Ock over for dinner...cut to Griffin dinner table, 8 plates in front of Doc Ock, Stewie - 'so...Doc Ock...pretty sucky name, huh? You ever use your tentacles to like, take advantage of women and stuff?' Ock, in predictably normal Seth MacFarlane voice - 'Er, no.' Stewie - 'And like, when you're at work are all your co-workers like "oh my god, look, it's that eight-tentacled freak, he's gonna kill our wives and steal all our babies with his freaky eight arms" is that what they say, is it? Is it?' Ock - 'Er, no.' Stewie - 'and, like, when you're in bed with your wife, can you use them to...' Ock - 'My wife's dead, you little brat!' cut to accurate parody of Raimi's Evil Dead-style operating theater tentacles attack scene from Spides 2, poc of the tentacles and all that, Stewie screaming etc. etc. *sigh* just do NOT make this movie.

...if you subscribe to Film Score Monthly Online. Download the mp3 audio feature "Best of 2009: Jon and Al Make a Recording" and the WOLFMAN clip plays from 4:21-4:51. It sounds like a pretty terrific, old-school theme to me!

Anyone who thinks Elfman only does "la-la-la-la" shit...
by Nasty In The Pasty
...DOESN'T LISTEN TO HIS MUSIC. He left that "lalalalala OOOM-PA" shit behind him almost 20 years ago. Where's the OOOM-PA in Milk? Charlotte's Web? Dead Presidents? Elfman's one of the last great composers we have left, and I'm THRILLED he's back on Wolfman (even if Conrad Pope is being brought on board to smooth over the holes left by the edited footage).
-
This will just sound like the Simpsons theme song and ruin the vibe.
-
so they rejected elfman, brought in someone else and then thought... "shit, elfman did heaps better than this!"
what the hell is going on with this film??

People with millions of $ + don't know what they're doing = fucked up film and no more career

Edward Scissorhands is one of the greatest scores in film histor
by CatoTheCensor
I'd put it in my Top 5 with Conan the Barbarian, Lawrence of Arabia, and Star Wars.
-
yeah when it calls for the lalalalal shit..he uses it..why not?
but he can do other things..and very well i might add...this film is getting seen by me..
-
WOLFM4N? what joke are you making? how is this the 4th Wolf Man movie to you?
-
correction, he did the opening theme for desperate housewives.

just as he did for THE SIMPSONS.

say no more.
-
This is extremely disappointing.
-
And his Terminator Salvation score was fucking atrocious. Prove me wrong, Danny-boy.
-
you're one of many people that doesn't know the difference between a composer that does the theme of a show and the totally separate composer who does the music for the body of each episode.

michael giacchino is a rare exception who does the theme's as well all the music for his JJ Abram's shows.
-
...was dull as day-old dishwater.

Still, who would you whiners rather have doing this movie? Ramin Noodles? Whoa Jablonsky? Jesus H, have you people experienced so much cinematic woe that when something truly great happens in film, you can't be happy about it? Retards.

I'm sure this crew will never work together again

This movie is supposed to open in a couple of weeks! WTF???
by Snake Foreskin
How in the hell are they going to throw this together? I mean, I'm not asking for perfection here... how are they even going to throw this together? Unbelievable!
-
Giacchino only writes the episode scores.

I agree that there will likely be multiple cuts of this film.
by The Reluctant Austinite
If only it were being released 5 years ago when DVD mania was still going as strong as the economy, it would certainly see at least 4 or 5 different DVD versions; one standard theatrical, one director's cut, one extended director's cut with a disc of bonus material(and Wolf Man statue or action figure), one "bootleg" cut like the Donner "what if" "Superman II" cut including different versions of the musical score and various commentary tracks from different directors and editors. There is enough material here for at least 3 different films.
-
but pre-1998 Elfman was starting to repeat himself. It's a lose-lose situation for Danny boy.
-
The main title sequence to "Planet of the Apes" was an incredibly entertaining piece of music. Love it.
-
not what youd expect from him...good song in there too.
-
... gave us Sleepy Hollow, Spider-man, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Charlotte's Web, Standard Operating Procedure and Wanted. All are great even if the Wedding Song in Corpse Bride was a wannabe Making Christmas. Still, I forgive him for that thanks to all the sweet New Orleans dark jazz at the end of the album. Long live Elfman!

Um. Elfman's name has been attached to the trailers...
by HelveticaConspiracy
What is this? Breaking news from a year ago? The music in the trailer is his, and made me weep a little imagining what could have been if Romanek had stayed. All the Elfman haters can choke on a dick, the man is awesome...
-
Great body of work. Really glad he's back.
-
He may be hit and miss but at least he's trying different things rather than cutting and pasting whole chunks of his scores like Horner.
-
clusterfuck of creative second-guessing? Really sad...

Just Announced: Del Toro to be replaced by Taylor Lautner
by HarryCalder
"Universal has confirmed that due to shifting marketing strategies, its 'Wolfman' reboot will be digitally altered to replace Benecio Del Toro with Taylor Lautner in the title role. An anonymous creative executive at Uni commented, 'At this point, we clearly don't give a fuck about anything anymore, except money, so why not? The girls love Taylor.'"

"With Taylor Lautner replacing Benecio Del Toro in its Wolf Man reboot, Universal has just announced that it will digitally replace Anthony Hopkins with Del Toro. 'Makes sense, right?' one anonymous inside source stated. 'Hopkins was too old to be Lautner's dad, and Del Toro was game. Give the CGI dorks a few more weeks and we'll have this mother ready to go.'"

He does still get into the lalalalala thing - sadly - everytime he scores a fantasy type film - everytime. Now granted, Dolores Claiborne is brilliant - A Simple Plan - and the "green elemental" scene in HB2 - but then it's right back into the same see-sawing chukca chukca strings - every single time. It's almost as if fantasy/sci fi doesn't inspire him. While portions of the Spidey scores stood out, the "theme" waas lackluster and forgettable. Chris Young's Spiderman music simply blew it away. Proof Of Life - a great action score. And let's not forget the absolutely brilliant Midnight Run. Yes, he hits it out of the park on occasion but , he seems to score superheroes and fantasy on auto pilot.
-
wow, j.j. is sick then.. dunno why i didn't kno he did all his own themes..

he said the introduction to “Fringe” came to him while he was getting ready to go to bed one night.
-
The look of this film is just so old-school Wolfman (hell, just old-school Universal monsterland!) that it screams for an old-school orchestral score. And I say this as a big Tangerine Dream fan. It'd be interesting for the DVD/BluRay release to have both scores.
