An FYI For 80's Cartoons Enthusiasts

Great news for fans of 80's cartoons. Two issues of not-easy-to-find tribute to the glorious glorified animated toy commercials of the 1980's, cereal:geek are now listed in Diamond's Previews solicitations.
Basically, all those specialty comic shops (the "direct market") get the majority of their comics and other merchandise from Diamond Comic Distributors. Every month, Diamond puts out a catalog/magazine called Previews with listings/thumbnails of the available products that they're soliciting. If you really want to get one of these products from a comic shop, and if you really want to support that product, you need to pre-order it through Previews at a local comic shop, or an online one (I'm not entirely enamored with it, but I use Mail Order Comics). It's not an ideal system for the consumer or the comic shop, but, again, if there's something that you want to have/support, preordering is the thing to do.

The January issue of Previews features cereal:geek issue two, Magic and Science and three, Evolution on page 318. Both are ad-free 100 pages looks at the likes of He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe and Ghost Busters ("Real" and Filmation) as well as more obscure faire like Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. The magazines feature articles, illustrations, scripts, storyboards, production material and interviews, and retail for $15 an issue. I've purchased a few. In addition to being great sources of background information about the pop culture of children of the 80's, they're eye catching volumes to flip through; the perfect sort of object for a geek's coffee table.

The Real Ghostbusters had some great animation. Regardless of the toy commercial aspect, 80s animation was way more edgy than anything on TV today. Nowadays its all irony and nonsequiturs.

I may have to check this out. As a kid who grew up in the 80's watching these shows, it could be fun. I've actually been re-watching some of these old cartoons on DVD (GI Joe, Dungeons and Dragons, Defenders of the Earth). By todays standards they are ungodly awful, but viewed through my rose colored 1980s nostalgia glasses they are just awful.

The 80s Was The Most Awesome Decade Ever

    by kevinwillis.net

In so many ways. It's the decade that if I could possibly relive it from Jan 1st 1980 to Dec. 31st 1989, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Because a good chunk of that decade I did not really appreciate fully when I was living through it, and would love to do it again in order to savor the pure 80s-ness of it.The thing I'd miss most from today if I were transported back to the 80s? The Internet? Nope. Cell Phones? Nope. I'd miss the ability to save progress in video games. I remember playing my Nintendo back in the day and making good progress then having to stop (or dying) and having to start over the whole game from the beginning . . . boy, that was tedious.

    by kevinwillis.net

As was Smurfette. But 80s hotness . . . the girls generally were super-hot. The average feather-haired, sparkled makeup, shoulder-pad-wearing, big hoop ear-ring chick , whether it was zebra stripes or Ocean Pacific or Members Only, whether it was boots or leg warmers or skinny ties or leather hats that didn't go with anything else they were wearing . . . the 80s were a magical time.

Sir Loin, Royston: Compuserve Was Crazy

    by kevinwillis.net

I got an account but I often ran it up--cuz I loved the geeky goodness--but the price was nuts. I used Compuserve again for Internet access back in '93, '94. Eventually, I was all about the local bbs . . . CIS was just too much case. . . . Saving state is not cheating. I don't play anything if I can't save it--anything serious, anyway. I don't play most of my emulated games seriously, because although you can save state, you still can't save your progress if you can't play the games as good as you used to and you end up dying. "Game over, man!"

No discussion of 80's cartoons is complete without a mention of Thundarr, the Barbarian. I was the perfect age to enjoy all of the golden age of Saturday morning cartoons, and nothing compared to Thundarr... he was Conan with a light saber and a cat-Wookie (with a mutant cat-Wookie horse!) who rode around a twisted post-apocalyptic landscape that would have put Mad Max to shame, waging never ending war against Jack Kirby designed wizards. AND IT WAS AWESOME. I have to see if those are out on DVD yet, because I definitely need to watch that whole series again.

Actually I am a Child of the 80's and not only did Joe, Trans and Robotech have great asethetics (Anyone that wasn't impressed by Joe's opening scenes especially in the animated 1986 Movie, don't know shit about good animation IMO.)but there were plenty of substance; i.e.The Death of Prime,Roy Folker, actual violence not the censored Filmation Gay He Man bullshit and classic PSAs from the Joe Series.I also give props to Galaxy rangers for their cool opening theme; "No guts no glory",Mighty Orbots for great music and animation courtesy of TMS,and Thundercats' impressive opening scene as well...too bad there wasn't enough ass kicking in 'cats (could have been a contender.) X-Men: The Pride of X-Men was good because of the Japanese animation possibly the first Marvel Comics Anime!Catchy theme BTW: "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, the mutant day, has now begun..X-Men, X the day, X-Men, Coming your way"!

A Sci-Fi Show with story arc and done with Puppets? I'm sold!

    by notgeorgekaplan

Wow, how come I've never heard of Star Fleet before? I was a big fan of Thunderbirds an sci-fi in general. I just watched the opening video on youtube and it looked like a dark mix between Captain Future, Robotech and of course Thunderbirds. Thanks for pointing me into the direction of that show, savagedave.

    Thundarr was the shit

    by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks

It kicked all kinds of ass. I also loved Robotech, Voltron(both versions), SilverHawks, Battle of the Planets. When I was young I loved a show I cannot recall the name of. It had Dracula and Frankenstein plus a couple of other monsters and they kicked ass together. They also drove around in a weird bubble car...

    by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks

    Starfleet

    by savagedave

Is perhaps better remembered than actually watched but you have to love characters with names like Barry Hercules.

Ha! I recall one of my friends in junior high

    by dingbatty

saying "Clio is hot...for a cat." It was an awkward, Michael Scott-like moment, in retrospect, to the group of friends listening. We knew what he meant, that the cat had a pleasing anthropomorphic shape, but it just sounded odd. He was a pioneering furry.

    Ulysses 31???

    by blackflowerx

Can anyone remember Ulysses 31??!! I think it was french , it would have been weird as fuck , but the dubbing was hilarious (lot's of random out of context screaming while talking ,which offset me and my twin sisters freaked outness ...It was cool and very surreal at the time (1984?), Ulysses looked a bit like an old skool Billy Ray Cyrus in a sky blue body suit, with a beard and a long mullet....

    Ulysses 31 : Yeah, I remember it.

    by v'shael

and it was french (if the ending credits were anything to go by) but I don't remember any hilarious dubbing or out of context screaming. That happened in several other imported shows (The Flashing Blade) but I remember Ulysses as being a regular cartoon. Nothing too unusual about it.

    Inhumanoids was monster-bliss!

    by cadillac jones

H.P. Lovecraft for kids - so awesome! Three ancient baddies? One, D'Compose, whose mere touch transforms you into a 30' rotting skeletal zombie?! It just didn't get more awesome than that! Plus I recall occasionally he'd put the good guys in his rib-cage with his slimy, pulsating organs. I wonder if that was a mind-fuck?
