This is pretty darn cool... What is the next Tim Burton Fairy Tale Twist for Disney?
Hey folks, Harry here with the coolest whisper I've heard in a while. I was chatting to a fella I know tonight, and this person heard that Tim Burton is developing another classic Disney fairy tale in a quasi Live Actiony kinda way. It seems that Tim has a hankering for SLEEPING BEAUTY... but not really... You see, he's going to tell the story from Maleficent's point of view. In fact, it'll be called MALEFICENT.
She was always the most interesting character in that story, but we never knew why she hated those three little fairy wenches... or what indignity she suffered at the hands of Aurora's parents. Yeah, I'm on board... if only it ends with Maleficent with a sword in her heart in dragon form. Cuz that'll rule. Think about how long this plotline was carried out over. She has quite a tale to tell. Let's see where it pops up in Burton's filmography. We're hearing that DARK SHADOWS is stumbling a bit... Let's see what Tim does next, he has some interesting choices before him.

I own a Maleficent statue I dig that movie so much. Bring it!
-
one guess who is cast a Malificent! 1st?
-
HBC will be Maleficent.
-
Soo close yet so far. I usually hate the whole "first" thing but found myself rather excited at the prospect but alas it was not meant to be. God damn it
-
One of my favorite classic Disney cartoons before they got too commercial. And Maleficent is pretty much the meanest bitch in all of cinema. Should be great!
I think this will all depend on box office figures from ALICE, though, right? -
doesn't really have a "backstory." There isn't really much sympathy you can build there I think. But I guess they said the same thing about Wicked. But not everyone likes Wicked. But I've never seen it.
-
Let me guess...the set will have a bunch of odd Expressionist shapes, including tilting, vermiform spirals and shit. Johnny Depp will play some infantilized man child, and the movie will be passed off as "dark and brooding" because the color palette is sickly green and gray.
I liked the Burton style back when it was original...Beetlejuice...Edward Scissorhands...Nightmare Before Christmas...but now it makes me tired. -
Johnny Depp. I'd see that.
And don't go screwing with the best movie dragon ever. -
in Hollywood. The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was...Really? More proof that Hollywood is out of good original ideas. Lame.
-
Now that would be cool!
-
I mean I still like the stuff he does but, we had brilliant original stuff like Beetlejuice and Scissorhands, then it's all these remakes and adaptations.Seriously aside from like what, Corpse Bride, it's all been franchise stuff.I am a Burton fanboy for life though, and I admit the Sleeping Beauty angle sounds fun, I just wish he could mine some more of that weird brain of his for some original stuff.Who knows, maybe he tapped it in 1990.
-
...you guys needs to be shot for that dorian gray ad! even if you click the 'x' you still get 2 pop ups!
-
How about a movie about the little black girl in "Terminator Salvation"? I'm sure she has an interesting back story. How did she end up joining Kyle Reese? Why doesn't she talk? How does she always have what you need in every situation? What happened to her parents? Now that would be a cool movie!!!
-
I'd love to him and Del Toro get together on a project i bet they could conjure up some really sick shit.
-
see him and Del Toro.
-
can't wait to see Johnny Depp as the Prince and Helena Bonham Carter as Maleficent.
-
Is there ANYTHING you people like, or do you just think you're cool because you hate Tim Burton? You should all go start a website with the Whedon haters so you can continually pat each other the back for being such good contrarians. I'm continually amazed by how many of you profess Burton to be unoriginal when he makes films that look like exactly NOTHING ELSE BEING MADE. Personally, while I wasn't fond of his Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, I love that he's looking at classic fairy tales from a different point of view. It's not like people haven't just retold these stories as are over and over. Which is, ya know, TOTALLY original (please get the sarcasm). Oh, and I totally hate first posts, too. That's why I didn't say it. Willpower is a wonderful thing.
-
Please take a tissue...
-
Even though it's based on Batman, it's twisted around enough to make it a distinctive Burton movie (but it does get into the tragedy of the Bat-life, probably more than almost any of the other flicks, sans Dark Knight). but, yeah, I do agree everything he does seems to be remakes or adaptations of something else or other now. Of course, he twists it around enough to make it distinctively his own. Maybe he only had a few original ideas in him, but you can't fault him for managing to make any property unique. Aside from Planet of the Apes. What the hell was that?
-
What the hell...Malificent had a bad-ass get up. Take your goth girlfriend to this, and you're getting lucky that night, I tell you what.
-
that's pretty much true of any burton flick.
The only Burton movie since the 90s that I really love is Big Fish. Other than that, it's pretentious crap. -
the worst of Disney cliche storytelling wrapped up in Hot Topic clothing.
-
Never mind that Oz remake, I want to see Wicked on the big-screen.
-
And if I stuck play doh fun factory inserts into my ass, my shit would like no one else's. Okay, Burton isn't THAT bad, I just don't understand the insane love for him.
-
Still waiting for Wicked. Any day now, studio suit monkeys.

From the hunters perspective? I'd pay for that.

all 12 of Andrew Lang's color fairy books, Italo Calvino's "Italian Folktales," Jane Yolen's "Favorite Folktales from Around the World" and any anthology of folktales from the various cultures and countries of Asia, so Disney can quit spinning in circles.

and Gerald McDermott's series of picture books on African beast fables.
-
FRIGGIN AWESOME.
-
Name the film besides Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Bettlejuice?
-
....and call it BEETLEGEUSE (or however he spelled it).
Thatd be awesome. -
TiM, PLEASE DIRECT THE Pee-Wee's Playhouse Movie YOURSELF DON'T JUST STICK YOUR NAME IN A PRODUCING CREDIT...that's just too tiny of a bone to throw old Paul, you owe him more than that. just go ahead and direct the damn thing and use all your Wonderland technology.PEE-WEE MADE YOUR CAREER IT WOULD BE AN AWESOME REUNION COME FULL CIRCLE BABY.('come full circle' is not a jackoff joke at the expence of paul reubens so no pun intended btw.)
-
But wHollyweird never makes rational decisions.
-
Didn't reimagine anything for that, yo.
-
The author of Wicked did that with Mirror Mirror. Didn't read it though, Wicked was depressing enough as a book. That book is not "slightly darker than the musical" it's pitch black fucking despair.
-
Try the 1997 movie SNOW WHITE: A TALE OF TERROR with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill. That's the movie you're looking for.
-
However, her evil in the original makes this a worthy story to tell.
-
I want to see, in my local multiplex Hellhole, a poster of Depp choking Helena Bonham Carter while holding an enema bag in his other hand with the quote below "I have to clean these bitches out". SUMMER 2011
-
She was evil. Evil didn't merit an invite to the birthday. Clearly, enough to send her over the edge & turn her into a murderous dragon.
-
Point still holds.
-
I'll keep screaming about it till it finally gets underway. Shows these twilighty fuckers what a real vampire is! Then go back and Burtonize all the Disney films you want.
-
...is the worst thing ever.
-
...I wonder which dark and gothic female lead TIM BURTON will choose for this role...
-
and it opens up TWO FUCKING WEBSITES to say thank you. IT'S A FUCKING CLOSE BUTTON. Makes about as much sense as throwing your keys in a river to start your car in the morning. STOP THIS NOW.
-
Twenty or so years ago, after Beetlejuice, we were excited about Tim. He was an original voice out there. But these days, the wonderful ED WOOD aside, he just churns the fuckers out. Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, Alice zzzzzzzz.... who cares? AND DON'T MENTION PLANET OF THE APES- in one swift move he shat on my childhood there.
What happened to TB the original artist? -
Unless it's Will Smith's production company doing it, then his son will be in the lead.
-
Of course he did. Edward Scissorhands is Frankenstein and Pinocchio "re-imagined". I love it, but come on man, it's pretty blatant. So for that matter is Astro Boy. He's Frankenstein and Pinnocchio too. Geez.
-
Hadn't watched it for ages. One of his best.
-
...oh.

They've already made Bambi from the hunter's perspective
by kevin_costners_recycled_piss
After killing Bambi's mother he goes off to Vietnam and plays Russian roulette or something.
-
Weird. Why not just a plain adaptation of Sleeping Beauty? I've found that overexposure of a great villain tends to reduce their impact.
-
When I saw Wicked on tour this November, one of the producers was listed as being...Universial or Paramount and in the cast and crew there was a listing for a Universial (or Paramount, but I think it was Universal) lawyer. Not sure WHY they needed a lawyer on tour with them, but he was listed. Anyways I assumed after seeing that they are in pre-production or the rights to the musical have been picked up or something.that said, I'm not sure I want to see the original cast on screen even though I never got to see the show on stage, I'm afraid it would be too much recreation ala The Producers

AVATAR HAS BEEN PULLED FROM 1,628 CHINESE THEATRES!?! WTF!?!
by tehcreepythinman
The communist nation's state-run movie distributor, China Film Group, unexpectedly began pulling the blockbuster science-fiction picture from 1,628 2-D screens this week in favor of a biography of the ancient philosopher Confucius. Paul Hanneman, co-president of international distribution for 20th Century Fox, the movie's distributor, confirmed the move, which the studio learned about Monday evening. According to the Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily, the switch was made at the urging of propaganda officials who are concerned that "Avatar" is taking too much market share from Chinese films and drawing unwanted attention to the sensitive issue of forced evictions. Millions of Chinese have been uprooted to make way for high-rise buildings and government infrastructure projects in the fast-growing country. In "Avatar," human colonists try to demolish the village of an alien race to obtain a precious energy source buried under it. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2010/01/avatar-pulled-from-2d-screens-by-chinese-government.html WHAT THE FUCK?!?
-
It might have a snowballs chance in hell not to fail if he drops the usual cast (ie. depp). otherwise, i won't see it.
-
'Cause Alice In Wonderland is a classic novel not a fairy tale and i can't think of any other Burton/Disney films you'd be referring to!
-
seriously.... they're just trying to cut out the crowd who'll grown about seeing a film called 'sleeping beauty'. as for the chinese. damn, where will i get my pirate 3D copy from now?

I have it on good authority that disney has plans for other "vil
by jettl93
I still have alot of friends At disney from my years with the company and i can confirm that besides a Malefecent movie disney also intends to green light films based on the perspective of Ursela and jafar as well as the evil circus owner in pinochio. An exec at the big D also would like to bring susuan suranden back for and enchanted 2 which would twist the franchise into a villan piece
-
To jump on the "Tim Burton is creatively bankrupt" bandwagon that is?
-
This is par for the course in China. China Film releases all films in China. There has always been a strict quota (20) on Hollywood films being shown in a given year in China so as not to impact local productions. That's what the current WTO issue is all about (well partially, not all). Fox have already made $77m in China and become the highest grossing film of all-time so they can hardly complain.
-
oh no you dont, you're 15 bucks is ours. or is that 15 yen? or 10000 yen? never been there
-
Must we think about the poor misunderstood villain? In the real world, maybe people aren't just good or evil, but can't we at least have that in the fairy tale world? "Don't be afraid of Mr. Jenkins, kids. It's not his fault he's a deviant pedophile."
-
And feature Johnny Depp in every other part.
-
Are people actually interested in this crap anymore? When's the last time he made a film that wasn't interchangeable with five others? And can he even make a film without Johnny Depp anymore? "You see, it's a fairy tale, but there's a *twist*..." Sigh.

filmcoyote, IF I WAS FOX I WOULD FUCKING COMPLAIN....
by tehcreepythinman
China has over a billion people and Avatar had about 95% of the fucking box office in the country, so 77m is fucking peanuts compared to what it could have done. I think that these fascist cocksuckers did this for two different reasons; One, they didn’t like the movies pro-environment/anti-imperialism message and; Two, the Chinese government is tied to organized crime which makes a fortune off piracy and bootlegging so the Government pulled the movie and got out of the way for their gangster buddies. That’s just my opinion.
-
It's Fox's greed vs China's politics. But you point about it having 95% of the box office misses the point that when a Hollywood film opens in China it does basically have the market to itself - 20 per year remember - and it's the highest grossing film of all-time already there it's not like it was cut off short. This is business as usual for China and Fox know that, they are belly-aching about it from pure greed because it's done so well there but this is how that market works and Fox International know that. It isn't the great surprise they are making out. The only reason they are making a big fuss is because of the whole WTO appeal that went against China forcing them to allow more US films in - Fox's figures if they complain loud enough they'll get the WTO involved. But it's a typical capitalism vs communism issue and therefore not easily solved, nor unforseen. I worked on a film released in China a while back that did pretty well and we weren't allowed to publise the fact because we were advised if we did we could expect the government to implement sanctions. Fox went and blasted "biggest film in China" stories everywhere so the government reacted. Fox only has itself to blame on this one. Everyone in the distribution community knows that.
-
Fuck Burton not doing original material. Seriously.
-
Burton is a fucking hack who can't make a movie without Johnny Depp.
-

In fact, he'll probably cast Depp as the Maleficent
by bruce of all trades
Seeing as he's always had a bigger hard on for him than for Bonham-Carter
-
I wonder what part Carter will have in it
-
That people are REALLY looking forward to see Alice In Wonderland. Like EVERYONE fucking talks about it, everyone goes nuts for the trailer. Whats to fucking like about that trailer? You know that movie is going to be huge.
-
I wonder if in this version, the princess won't be sympathetic and the prince is being egged on to rescue her but then falls in love with Maleficent when he's locked in a cell and Maleficent is gloating over his failure. I guess I doubt it, although if there has to be another version, it might be an interesting twist.
-
...and I'm sure some get tired of my rants (those of you who bother to read them), but this just confirms for me at least that there's absolutely NOTHING FOR ME on the future filmmaking landscape. Hollywood's all: "A-Team? Remake it. Wizard of Oz? Remake it, maybe from the Scarecrow's POV this time. Johnny Quest? Remake it, and hire a guy who's 23 years old instead of 12 like Johnny Quest actually was in the show. Sleeping Beauty? Remake it, but let's go from Maleficent's POV. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves? Remake it, from the POV of the Dwarves, or BETTER YET just ONE of the Dwarves, say, Sleepy? (hmmmm, what made him tick? Why was he always so sleepy? Heroin abuse? Neglect as a child? I'm sure audiences are DYING to know). The Thing? Remake it, or better yet a prequeal and/or sequel so that we we can either see what we already knew happened with the Norwegians (or Swedes) and then maybe give the unnecessary extended ending to the original by showing that Keith David was ACTUALLY the thing all along. Spider-Man? Reboot it, this time from the POV of his webbing. Let the Right One In? Rema...that's right, you're learning! Johnson, you'll go far in this business as long as you listen to me. What? What's that you say? You've got an ORIGINAL script that delves deep into the heart of humanity and that you struggled with for 3 years to perfect and studies the definition of reality and ponders philosophical conundrums and logical fallacies and studies careful character development and is completely unlike ANYTHING that's currently being put out? And it doesn't deal with vampires, tween angst or rely heavily on special FX and 3D? GET OUTTA MY OFFICE!!!!" Again, if you like this kind of thing, good for you. I'm happy for ya. As for me, there is absolutley NOTHING on the future landscape of filmmaking that I'm aware of, so this is me sighing and going off to watch RAN or SEVEN SAMURAI again, maybe read a bit more in A FEAST FOR CROWS and so some training...anyways...we're all just floating...
-
That's all I got.
-
Get the FUCK away from Disney. oh, and stop making shitty goth movies and what not. Oh, and you RAPED Planet of the Apes. Piece of shit r- imagining. Sincerely, someone you don't give a shit about.
-
and I'm a straight male. Hey... Aurora she was hot. And it had a dragon in it.
-
you all know Helena Bonham Carter will play her. set it in stone already.
-
she was always done bad. they shoulda invited her to that party. the misunderstood villains are the best.
-
...concept sketches and paintings. SLEEPING BEAUTY is one of Disney's most stylized movies, but the production work was truly great...the world is ready for it now.
-
I saw someone had the talkback handle LisaNeedsBraces and I couldn't help myself =).
-
for the love of god pls no h bonham carter
-
...is over rated. Hes a better designer than he is director. How many really good movies has he made in the past 20+ years? Ed Wood, PeeWee.... uhhhhhhh Big Fish was enjoyable, Sleepy Hollow was just ok....ummmmmmm. I guess thats it.
-
I totally agree. Pee Wee was great, Batman Returns pretty good, Edward Sissorhands brilliant - - but since then the films have more and more been pieces of shit. Planet of the Apes? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? These were horrible - and horrible-looking - films that were worse versions of classics. And he's still doing it. The moment he inserted in Charlie, where we saw Wonka's dad being a mean dentist or something, to 'explain' in a flashback why Wonka is so screwy - - that was the moment that I realised that Burton has become not only over-rated but hands down a BAD film-maker.
-

Burton's turning into Jamie Cullum, i.e. a dull cover artist.
by knuckleduster
Do something original, you mook.
-
he better use Lisa Marie..
Lisa Marie in a Malificent outfit? Yes please. Hell, she'd be hot as Sleeping Beauty, too. -
The man used to hate Disney with a passion... now he makes 3D fairy tales for them with custom twisty trees.
You're done Burton. Thanks for playing. -
And will Susan Sarandon do a cameo?
-
3D, mildly gothic. Johnny Depp under some weird looking makeup. Lots of stripes and curly forms. Lots of purple and black. Danny Elfman- conducted kids singing "la la la la". Bohan Carter in the second most important female role. Christopher Lee in a cameo.
-
Right now they are going to wait until the money the show is making is tapped out. They don't want a film to interfere with the money the show can make.
-
Are people really doubting weather burton could pull it off? the film is amazing, it's hook done right, and the way it leaves the story open for a sequel and a meshing of another disney classic has me hoping tim Burton drops his "no sequel rule" and returns for Alice in wonderland 2 because the very fact that the film contains one mind blowing of a cameo before the credits role means disney better have a sequel in mind
-
So, will it be a musical?
-
that's what China suffers from. Special Interest capitalism of the most corrupt order.
Pulling Avatar is not a surprise given that. -
people only want to see his production design. He should just be a costumer.
-
is that I don't have to actually see his movies. I know exactly what they will be like the moment I hear the synopsis and can save my $10. (I might spring for 3D just for the eye candy though.)
-
he can't always cast his wife, can he?
-
And even though it's a biopic, it's still very original.
I just wish he did a few more of those kinds of offbeat type of things. Throw the big Disney studio picture in there form time to time, that's no problem. But then again I'd probably have a hard time arguing with those big checks myself. -
Ed Wood is as good as it's gonna get for Burton. If you've seen one of his flicks you've seen 'em all.
-
a Disney hired hand. Interesting how in his earlier career as a Disney artist he felt stiffled, and now he's one step away from going down the road of doing a Blackbeard's Ghost remake.
-
i seriously hope that this isn't the case. where and what sort of things are you hearing that DARK SHADOWS is stumbling. by all I have seen its fast tracked. They just hired the costume designer. I hope to the gods he does DS before anything else.
-
You heard it here first.
-
Disney creations. I just wanted to point that out.
-
Come on Burton, does no one hand you original ideas anymore? It's all been downhill since Mars attacks for me.
Well, I still havent seen sweeny todd, so I guess I should withhold judgment -
Almost many Disney title is based on folk tale or fairy tale etc. Not that that's a bad thing. I think Disney's Robin Hood is the best adaptation around. Eat your heart out Ridley Scott.
-
seriously....Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was horiffic...Alice in Wonderland somehow looks even WORSE than that.
-
right?
-
I wonder if it'll be kinda goth and dark. Maybe Helena Bonham Carter will be in it? Any bets that Johnny Depp will make an appearance? Tim Burton has jumped a depp-faced shark.
-
Burton didn't really have much to do with Nightmare Before Christmas he was wrapped up with Batman Returns. That one was basically all Henry Selick, common misconception
-
Seriously, she'd kick everyone's asses!
-
Most people's vision of those tales are from the Disney versions
-
See, that's why this doesn't interest me: the 2D animation of Maleficent in dragon form is eternally kickass. BEST MOVIE DRAGON EVER. The scene barely lasted 2 minutes, but it's one of the most iconic images in movie history. There is no freaking way CGI could ever top it. The dragon in Sleeping Beauty was mininalist but breathtakingly real, savage yet beautiful, deadly as an asp yet graceful as a ballet dancer. I do NOT want to see it in 3D. Hell, that AA Maleficent dragon in Disneyland, as accomplished as it is, is no match for the 2D version. And besides, as George Lucas has proven, making a villian of a hero drama the main focus of a follow-up film can really suck. So screw this, I'm not watching.
-
Seriously, in her first appearance in Sleeping Beauty, when the princess had just been born, she's easily one of the most smoking hot animated babes around. (Yeah, she's green, but still...) She doesn't age well over the next 16 years of the movie apparently... a shame.
-
cast michael keaton as old bruce wayne!
-
A friend and I have thought for years that if anyone can adapt the book "Geek Love" and make it into a film, it would be Tim Burton. It is one of our favorite books, quite bizarre, but a great story. I just wanted to put this out there....thinking one day there may be the possibility of the idea reaching him.
BTW, I think that the retelling of 'Sleeping Beauty' by Mr. Burton will be awesome. I can't wait to see "Alice in Wonderland"! -
Wasn't she just pissed off because thought she didn't get invited to the party? Her invitation to Aurora's birth accidentally slid under the rug and she thought she was slighted, so she curses her. Over the years she gets worse and worse. Could be interesting. She was the bomb in Kingdom Hearts. What? They're good games.
-
So anyone against this project can suck my nuts. The part where she taunts the prince, for no reason other than her own sick pleasure, is awesome. "I shall sleep well."
-
That would be cool Maleficent rocks!
-
i hope they add moretwistto teh story like what i have read in others (i.e. http://www.college-paper.org/ )
