So... you know that SUN story about Tobey Maguire as Bilbo? AhembullshitAhem
Hey folks, Harry here... this morning, on my way out the door to see HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, I was glimpsing through mail - and a shit ton of readers from the UK were forwarding masses of email regarding a story in the tabloid, THE SUN, that was stating definitively that Tobey Maguire was cast as Bilbo in Guillermo's upcoming production of THE HOBBIT.
Well... I shot an email off to Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro to see if I could get an official response. The word?
No truth at all, although we're all big fans of Toby. We are currently auditioning for Bilbo, and a month or two away from any announcements.
Cheers
Peter J
Then I got this response from Guillermo:
Its not true, gordito-
G
Yes, Gordito is Guillermo's nickname for me. Though usually he modifies it with rojo. Gordito Rojo, which sounds like a new flavor of fried burrito at Taco Bell. So once again, we bring you the truth. Peter Parker is not Bilbo.

I feel like lately you guys get all your info from twitter or from hitfix. Thanks for actually spending 20 seconds to do your job and bring us some news thats not from someone elses website
-
Just saying, is all.
-
I honestly wouldn't wipe my arse with that....these are the geniuses that said cher was catwoman in the next Nolan batman <br><br>Ignore anything that comes out of this hack rag
-
Just announced in my head...
-
"Who the fuck are you?"

I can only apologise wholeheartedly on behalf of those Brits who
by taxman2001
Not very bright I'm afraid. After all this is the same newspaper that informed us Freddie Starr (a "comedian") Ate My Hamster Guess what that story was about....
-
You wipe your arse on that rag and more shit comes off the paper.
-
The Sun reported on something and it WASN'T TRUE? What are the odds of THAT?
-
Is the DVD release column still being done? I keep checking back but it never appears anymore. Is it over or just behind again? If it is just that you're behind, have you ever talked to your Dad about doing it? Of all the contributors on AICN, his columns are consistantly enjoyable reads.
-
If there's something written in this piece of shit wrag tabloid, believe the opposite as a general rule.
-
"as reported by the National Enquirer"
-
...that came up with this one?
-
Their reporters can barely spell and can hardly construct a cohesive sentence, let alone report the news.
-
...imagine that. /sarcasm off
-
are just so he could say he got a response from someone famous and his connection to them. Lately he is just posting his e-mail responses.
-
It was in The Sun. Aren't they the ones that claimed Eddie Murphy and Cher were going to be The Riddler and Catwoman in the next Batman film?
-
Again! Instead of appearing on X Factor and Big Brother spin-off shows, how about doing some fucking research and fact-checking, asshole. I'm still awaiting confirmation on Eddie Murphy as the Riddler and Shia LaBeouf as Robin in "Gotham", Gordo! BTW other UK tabloids are mentioning Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron as the new Spidey.
-
There are a lot of people in the UK who hate this rag over Hillsborough in 1989. Take anything they publish with a truckload of salt.
-
Tobey Maguire IS Bilbo Baggins...The Sun ARE fucking gullible.I'm glad I don't read the shitrags.
-
I salute you sir.
-
What?
-
I agree this was just an excuse for Knowles to tell us del Toro has a nickname for him. Harry is getting more gay as the days pass.
-
aintitcool.com/node/42165
-
Is gordito some kind of Mexican steak? Harry reminds Guil of food - LOL
-
It's a slam dunk
-
C'mon!
-
...I think I'd like someone that can act. Yeah, that'd be nice.
-
'Nuff said.
-
it's: "BOTTOM"...(cough)
-
....The Sun struggle to fill their pages with anything, they go online, find a rumour, say they have a source and write about it. IGNORE THEM!!!!
-
After all Frodo is related to Bilbo....and Elijah is quite a few years older than he was when he played Frodo.
-
...she wouldn't do Bilbo justice.
-
the morons that emailed you the story so we can virtually shout at them for believing one word of the shit that comes from The Sun. Utter shit rag, sometimes has good tits though.
-
It's automatically not news. Just take it as read that anything that The Sun has as an 'exclusive' is 100% wrong - it's quicker that way. All of their entertainment stories are recycled fan speculation from messageboards dressed up with oh-so-fake quotes from "inside sources".
-
take it from a Brit. If the Sun publishes it - IGNORE IT. As for bilbo, I'd still like to see Martin Freeman get the role. His comedy timing, sense of pathos and all round acting skills just screamed bilbo to me when I re-read the book recently. Peter, Guillermo (as if yer reading), this geek says yes.
-
Maybe I'm out of it... <P> But I thought James McAvoy had been cast as Bilbo.
-
Linda Hunt as Bilbo.
-
He would be beyond perfect for the role. Plus I would love for his casting to draw more Americans to his version of the Doctor.
-
is about as credible as The Weekly World News. <p> Stop printing their bullshit, even to deny it.
-
Yeah, if we're going to get rebuttals to Sun "news" stories on here, could we at least get some Page 3 girlie pix, too?
-
"Fat Boy"<p> Gordito rojo would mean "Red Fat Boy"
-
He'd be best suited, and I never bought into the Tobey rumors for a microsecond.
-
Dick.
-
Now that his "reign" as Spidey is PFFT...
-
...Sell out... oh wait, we ALL call him that?
-
He's definitely leading man material, although for some reason we're being force fed blandness like Sam Worthington right now.
-
That's hilarious. Harry, your smug sentence about the nickname may have backfired. Are you sure he even likes you?
-
For some reason...
-
Both close to Mexicans.<p>Don't want to be near either one when your eating.<p>Makes you throw up a little when you think of them.
-
http://tinyurl.com/odp4z9
-
However, Maguire would make a perfect Bilbo as well. It would be nice to see an actual Brit get the role, tho...
-
Only stoned white people work at mine...
-
And, if he weren't too tall, John Krasinski would make a decent hobbit.
-
bravo!
-
I know this because Im mexican, soo you can bet Im not liying.
-
and for some reason I burst out laughing. Is that racist?
-
is that true? That's embarrassing. Also Guillermo should be one to talk. He's quite the fatboy as well.
-
Any truth to that rumor?
-
Harry knows some players. I'm all fuzzy, inside.
-
...pretty fuckin' worthless!!
-
But I guess it's neat that a month later the filmmakers e-mailed you to say, yep, Tobey's right.
-
...in this thread because everybody here doesn't know Harry's personal info/history. Kinda funny.
-
Not even sure he'd be interested, though. Haven't heard any rumors about it, anyway. But yeah, I'd be cool with him in the role.
-
Oh and stop dropping names.
-
Oh and stop dropping names.
-
The Gorditos?
-
Ever since I saw Starter for 10 (I think that's what it's called)
-
Someone who has only down obscure TV and stage work, and has an uncanny resemblance to a young Ian Holm. David Tennant? Big no. We'll just spend the movie thinking: there's Doctor Who with the dwarfs. And there's Doctor Who with the elves. And now Dcotor Who is running away from the goblins...you get the idea. A complete unknown is the only wa to go.
-
ANY of them would be good choices, and they're all quite different. Stop trying to give dead-pan Maguire a new franchise!
-
Stop dropping names, Harry... it's unbecoming, since we already know you're full of shit.
-
... would be perfect for the role of Bilbo, and it would be great for the guy to get more exposure here in the States...
-
If James Earl Jones can make his voice sinister enough, I think he might be the perfect Smaug. I realize his voice is very recognizable, but I think he could do small things with this voice to make that not the case.
-
He's shorter.
-
...would be a fantastic choice. They need to cast an actor, not a celebrity. Can you imagine what it would have been like if Sean Connery had taken the role of Gandalf? We would have been watching Connery the whole time, instead of seeing Ian McKellen disappear into the role. This project doesn't need a big name celebrity cast in the title role in order to be a hit, and I think they realize that. They just need a solid actor who can capture the essence of Bilbo.
-
Martin Freeman is a better actor than James McAvoy??? God I hope not! Although Freeman definitely should looked at by Del Toro. He might actually work.
-
Goddamn, this just increases my theory that Guillermo del Toro is the FUCKING man.
-
So Tom Waits is on again as Bilbo, then.
-
That gave me a warm feelings in the loins.
-
bravest little hobbit of them all!
-
Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Gandalf?
-
Black Hobbits in Da Hood
-
"After all Frodo is related to Bilbo....and Elijah is quite a few years older than he was when he played Frodo." <p> Doesn't obviously help, as Bilbo and Frodo were both aged 50 when they set out on their respective grand quests.
-
I'd also like to put in my vote (once again) for Nick Frost. I'd like to have my Bilbo be a bit more stout and somewhat comedic. And I think Nick could portray Mr. Baggins as well as any of these other choices.
-
the first two words to do not belong in this description. And is Guillermo in the gordito club? Peter Jackson got smart and cancelled his membership.
-
I can't stand Tobey Maguaire!!!! He plays all of his characters as if he is a weirdo ready to go postal!!!

...no McAvoy! He's far wetter than Maguire. Tennant is too tall and neither Frost nor Freeman can carry a picture. It's a Paul Giamatti type we need, not some sub-Hugh Grant numpty. So many talkbalkers need to start barking up the right tree.
-
You need someone who really fits the part. You don't need anyone who is known for anything else. <BR><BR> I've given up on my quest for Ian Holm. I know he's probably too old.
-
And Guillermo's nickname for me? Mr coolniverse.
-
I would've agreed with you Mr. Lucas. But they did, and for continuity purposes McAvoy's the best option out there.
-
Come on... we all know he IS Bilbo Baggins.
-
You heard it here first. Yeah!!!!
-
I wanna see the poster of him going ass-to-ass with Gollem!
-
Morgan Freeman... In the interests of political correctness, they is gonna white him up for the role. You heard it here furst.
-
for two reasons. 1) He is spamming like a cunt. 2) He believes that "TAYLOR LAUTNER ROCKS!". Come on! That should be a feckin' lifetime ban right there. P.s the Sun is an absolute fucking disgrace, as is it's average reader.
-
I happen to think British comedian David Mitchell would be the perfect Bilbo Baggins. He looks and sounds exactly how I always imagined Bilbo to be. If you're unfamiliar with his work, check out Peep Show on Hulu or his video web rants here: http://tinyurl.com/apq8lq

no thats the job of those little GIF anims up in the corner...to gild the lilly as they say
-
I knew a guy, a real cunt of a man, who when he needed some money would phone the tabloids and say 'Clive Owen is the new Doctor Who', the tabloids don't give a shit about movies or tv but they need to fill space so they'd throw him a few hundred pounds and print the shit.<BR><BR>It's changed now as what they do is trawl websites - like here - see a rumour and print it as truth. If the rumour is true then they appear correct, if it's not then none of the readers remember anyway.
-
That is just what JettL is!
-
i would suggest Brian Blessed as Thorin Danny De Vito as Bombur Ron Perlman as Beorn what ya think?
-
It really is. It's the 2nd most stupid news paper after The Sport and as equally racist as The Daily Mail. It also has too much power in who wins political election. If The Sun tells them to vote for a leg of ham then the ham wins for the next 4 years. Fucking sad!

AVATAR HAS BEEN PULLED FROM 1,628 CHINESE THEATRES!?! WTF!?!
by TehCreepyThinMan
The communist nation's state-run movie distributor, China Film Group, unexpectedly began pulling the blockbuster science-fiction picture from 1,628 2-D screens this week in favor of a biography of the ancient philosopher Confucius.<br> <br>Paul Hanneman, co-president of international distribution for 20th Century Fox, the movie's distributor, confirmed the move, which the studio learned about Monday evening.<br> <br>According to the Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily, the switch was made at the urging of propaganda officials who are concerned that "Avatar" is taking too much market share from Chinese films and drawing unwanted attention to the sensitive issue of forced evictions.<br> <br>Millions of Chinese have been uprooted to make way for high-rise buildings and government infrastructure projects in the fast-growing country. In "Avatar," human colonists try to demolish the village of an alien race to obtain a precious energy source buried under it.<br> <br>http://www.thenewstribune.com/apheadlines/outdoors/story/1034148.html

how many times is AICN gonna try to "confirm" SUN stories?
by RedHorseVector
you guys look like fucking morons when you do this.
-
The one piece of casting I really would love to see Ian McShane as Smaug would rule.
-
At the Globes when getting beat by Bridges because he realized he'll forever be known as Spiderman....not bullshit.
-
Gotta have some peter Dinklidge in there somewhere
-
If they can get past the need to cast a young guy as Bilbo, Paul Giamatti would be a perfect choice
-
The sun is making stuff up?! Shocking.... The readers who mailed you must really be retarded... Only retards read The Sun but truly moronic retards believe anything they read in there. Bunch of Pommie Yobs...
-
Why do you read? Why do you post? Some woefully misguided sense of superiority? FUCK OFF!
-
as if what the other 'respectable' newspapers print ISN'T bollocks...
-
RETARDED. What the hell is up with fanboy love for actors that are too old to play specific characters?! <p> Blessed is 72. Thorin is a middle aged Dwarf (about 300 years old) who must appear relatively youthful and robust. He's a badass worrior. Blessed, (albeit, reportedly, very fit for a 72 year old) is far to old to convincingly pull off a turn as Thorin Oakenshield.
-
... but he's far too thin to play Bilbo Baggins. Fatten him up by about 50 lb and I'm right with you.
-
"Gordito rojo" actually translates as "Fat[man]Redhead" which is a truthfull description of Harry Knowels. I have met him, and fat and redhead aside, he is a capitol fellow! DIE AICN HATERS!
-
Although McAvoy would be a fine choice IMO, the role of Bilbo Baggins is yet to be cast.
-
He would make the best Bilbo am I the only one that sees this??
-
... is an excellant choice for Bilbo.
-
RETARDED!<p>In any case, given the large number of miscast actors in the LOTR trilogy, plus the many misjudgments and overall mediocrity of the franchise, there's little chance that they'll pick anyone halfway appropriate for Bilbo Baggins.<p>As for this site, it has long ago - and by its own (repeated and unapologetic) admission - become subsumed into the marketing departments of Hollywood studios. Hence, withheld 'negative' (read: unbiased) reviews of 'favoured' movies (read: by directors Harry wants to get 'in' with), naked and absurd self-promotion, added to the delusion that Harry and his ilk are looked upon with anything other than contempt by his pretend e-mail Hollywood chums. Yes, it's RETARDED all right.
-
Ah, there it is.
-
Hobbit age does not = human age. A Hobbit of 33 = a hman of 21. A Hobbit of 50 = a human of 33.
-
... please stop posting.
-
So, Frodo in the LOTR movies, looks like a hobbit of 18. Terefore that would make him a human of, er, 12? Interesting.
-
... so I won't.
-
I've been to the UK several times, but never spent any time there reading newspapers. So, I take it The Sun is like, what? Sort of a newspaper equivalent of FOX News crossed with the old supermarket tabloid The Weekly World News? So what, then, is the UK equivalent of Bat Boy? Or Glen Beck, for that matter?
-
He looks too "dwarfy". Sad isn't it? This is what we've come to. A hard-working actual dwarf can't get an acting job playing a fantasy dwarf. The irony!
-
...how fucked up is YOUR sceen name? LOL! Please stop posting.
-
...you can lick my taint Hooded Justice. As if I would let a syphilitic mutant such as yourself anywhere near my asshole.
-
Seriously, they need to use the most current version of the method they used to make Richard Dreyfuss young again for "Mr Holland's Opus" to put Ian Holm back in the drivers seat on this role. It's not just for continuity either. He just IS Bilbo Baggins. Casting anyone else in this part is totally fucked up.
-
Especially The Mirror - From a movie no one saw. The Wonder Emporium of Dr. Parnassus.
-
... = human Dwarfs...
-
... physical for an actor of Ian Holm's (78?) age.
-
... HoodedJusstice? (lol about your screen name BTW) <p> Please, you must expound! <p> Ian Mckellan? Ian Holm? Kate Blanchett? Andy Serkis? Viggo Mortensen? Liv Tyler? Hugo Weaving?Brad Douriff? Christopher Lee! Sean Astin? Sean Bean? Orlando Bloom? John Rys Davies? Elijah Wood?!!!!!! You must be more specific my dear MORON.
-
The Sun story also said that Maguire quit SM4, not that the studio fired everyone and started over. So there's that. Martin Freeman = Bilbo, btw.
-
You? Think? Typing? Actors'? Names? In? Rapid? Succession? And? Adding? Question? Marks? Is? Saying? Anything?<p>Think we can't do it too?<p>William Shatner? Meryl Streep? Gerard Dépardieu? Colin Farrell? Whatsisname from Harry Potter? You know, the guy with the beard? The guy who played the petrol pump attendant in the background near the start of Psycho before she gets to the motel?<p>What's your point? What are you trying to say? Could you be specific? Will you please reply so we can laugh some more? At you, not with you? Moron says what?
-
YIPPPEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
-
I think there's a great case here for the digital de-aging of Ian Holm. He's perfect for the roll and it would be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the technology. This would give older high-caliber actors some outstanding longevity.
-
was maybe Faramir. The thing is that it was mostly writing, and not really the actor per se. Boromir was such a scene stealer and so perfectly cast and written for that when we get to Faramir, who is supposed to be better and stringer and more likable, it was bound to miss. That character was definitely robbed in the script but I think there's a tiny bit of miscasting there too.<BR><BR> Oh and there's the "elf that doesn't belong" random guy in TT I think it is. I think it's at helms deep... he has like one line and you look at him and say "huh? what? you're in the wrong movie dude"<BR><BR>Oh an the Orc leader from TT ( or ROTK ) that looks like he has a birth defect was poorly done too, but this is again mostly the fault of Lurtz being so awesome in the first movie. <BR><BR> Overall I thought the cast in LOTR was inspired especially looking at the pressure they were under by the fans. I was whincing all the way to the premier, but I immediately accepted nearly every one of them.<BR><BR> I think almost every other place people take issue with "cast" is really due to writing.
-

Holy shit, why didn't I think of Ian McShane as Smog sooner?
by RedJester
Perfect casting that!
-
Because they want Spider-Man to appeal to the Twilight girls. It's a win-win in their book. I also said the director of Bring It On: All Or Nothing will direct it, let's hope I'm wrong on that one. <p>I guess they forgot that Peter Parker is a nerd in high school.
-
WTF? You can't possibly that thick. Um, on second thought...

How come there wasn't any release-coverage of Lovely Bones?
by Tall_Boy66
Is it cause the movie got bad reviews and Harry is chummy with the director? I remember quite a lot of coverage when the movie was revving up but now that it hit theatres... nothing. A big tumbleweed. Methinks Harry is trying to keep his pwesents coming from PJ.
-
If a movie wasn't embargoed, especially if AICN got to do early reviews and early articles on it, they never seem to post much at all about it. I can cound at least a dozen movies last year that hardly got a peep upon their release but got at least 2 TBs prior to that.<BR><BR> But really can you blame anyone? People don't come to this site to read about what's already in theaters. That's pretty boring. <BR><BR>Yes, there are exceptions, but those are usually those that are notable for some other reason.
-
Tobey would be absolutely horrible for the role. The guy can not act... he has absolutely no expression. He's freakin' horrible.
-
Expected something genuinely hilarious from you. Never expected you to actually give up. That's what I get for overestimating people's abilities. Next!
-
Is the dope you're replying to worth the time it takes to type the post? A phenomenon I'm sure you're familiar with. There's no cure for the "thickness disease" I'm afraid...
