* “Big Bang” hit another all-time high.
* “Two and a Half Men,” undaunted by Sheen-fueled headlines, hit a new season high.
* “Heroes” hit another all-time low.
* A special Monday episode of “Fringe” did better than the last four new episodes of “Lie To Me” in that post-“House” timeslot. It was also “Fringe’s” best performance since its season premiere.
* The return of “Chuck” to Mondays did better than any episode of “Heroes” in the 8 p.m. timeslot since September.
* “Chuck” did fall a bit from its Sunday season premiere (2.9 vs. 2.6).
* Ray Romano’s “Men of a Certain Age” continues to fall but nonetheless was renewed for a second season this week.

* “American Idol” remains mighty, scoring its first premiere uptick since 2007. Viewers were likely lured by curiosity over how the auditions will work without Paula Abdul, and by news that this season of “Idol” will be Simon Cowell’s last.
* “Scrubs” and “Better Off Ted” both hit new lows. “Forgotten” again matched its very low series low.
* While “NCIS” wasn’t much hurt by the return of “Idol,” “NCIS Los Angeles” plummeted to a new series low. Both “NCIS LA” and “Good Wife” just received early second-season orders.
* “Idol” pushed “The Biggest Loser” down to its lowest number since September. Despite all the excitement with Conan, “Leno” hit a 1.8, low-ish for what is usually the talk show’s strongest night.
* Oxygen’s “Bad Girls Club” seems to have hit another all-time high.

* Not so hurt by the return of “Idol”? “Criminal Minds” and “CSI: NY,” still easily Wednesday’s top scripted dayparts.
* Hurt worst by the return of “Idol”? NBC. “Law & Order: SVU,” hit a season (and maybe series?) low. (It should fare better when NBC moves it to “Leno’s” old 10 p.m. slot. in March.) “Mercy” hit a new series low.
* Also hurt by “Idol”? All the Wednesday sitcoms. Even the new “Cougar Town,” which did not air directly against the reality juggernaut, could not beat Fox’s repeat of “The Simpsons.” Just before they took their inevitable downturns, ABC gave early second-season renewals to “Modern Family,” “The Middle” and “Cougar Town” (which means my old pal, “Cougar Town” co-creator Kevin Biegel, is now officially a rich man).
* “Ugly Betty,” which doesn’t air against “Idol,” is doing a bit better on Wednesdays than it did on Fridays, but it’s still a bit of a disaster.

* At 8 p.m., “Bones” won its timeslot with its best score of the season. ABC’s new lawyer drama “The Deep End” starts in the slot next week. New episodes of The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” return next week as well. CBS’ all-star edition of “Survivor” launches Feb. 11.
* At 9 p.m. “Grey’s Anatomy” and “CSI” hit all-time lows while “30 Rock” hit a season low sans “Office” as a lead-in. (“The Office” has clearly grown incredibly important to NBC. And I sense NBC could easily make the struggling but excellent "Parks and Recreation" just as important by sticking it on after "The Office" for a year or two.)
* Also at 9 p.m., “Fringe,” boosted by “Bones,” hit its best number since its season premiere, besting “30 Rock” for the first time this season.
* At 10 p.m., a crossover with “Grey’s” boosted “Private Practice” to its best score since September. “Mentalist” hit its lowest score since October. “Leno” hit its worst Thursday number ever and found itself beaten by Thursday’s “Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien”!).
* MTV’s “Jersey Shore” also beat Leno in 18-49 at 10 p.m. and scored another personal best.

No justice, insofar as the Monday episode wasn't particularly good. The "secret episode" (as much as Fox bothered to say anything about it) probably brought in the curious. Thursdays was okay. Better Off Ted continued to rock (Janet S. Crotum, "My breasts are covered with sadness" and much more), but its lame-duck status and ABC's idiotic scheduling has it DOA.
-
It sucks, mainly, because it was an out-of-order "lost" episode and probably confused the hell out of most of the people watching it, except for serious fans who read about it online. Interesting though, because even with a seriously crappy out-of-order episode, airing it not on the super competitive thursday automtically boosted its rating. That just shows, people dig this shpw. They just don't have time for it on thursday. God I'm sick of FOX being retards about this show. Put it back on Tuesday where it belongs assholes. Its unfortunate that shitty shitty episode had to be the one people actually got a chance to see. Who knows, maybe it helpedbring some people into the much more interesting creature feature this thursday. Though somehow I doubt that.

Lead some self-deluded on until he gets his audition in front of Simon and the gang and then humiliate him on national television for our viewing pleasure. I find this kind of sick.
-
That's great news, but damn I hope they write Joe's son out of the show. His two freak outs were awful. At least give the kid something to actually freak out about and not something as silly as not wanting to get on a bus for christ sakes. Also last week's episode with Romano and the chick that played Nina on 24 was well done. Loved the closing line.
-
Cmon Fox, give it the timeslot!

I know a lot of people who quite when they put Nathan in Sylar--and that was after HOW MANY promises to fix old problems? I've somewhat enjoyed this past season, though I dislike a lot of choices they've made and are sticking with (crummy power for Peter, Hiro dying all the time, Sylar still there but once again "neutered", Bennet's asshat divorce, Claire just being dumb and mad at her dad again, Nathan's many deaths with no point--actually, maybe this season sucks too. I hope Milo Ventimiglia, Masi Oka, James Kyson Lee, and Jack Coleman all go on to much much better things soon. Sandhil Ramamurthy might not be so bad in non-Mohinder roles too.
-
Even if it is a tad, I'm so glad more people are watching more of Big Bang Theory than 2 1/2 Men. Not that I like Big Bang so much; just that I think 2 1/2 is the comedy equivalent of a deflated testicle. *Phut-fizzz*
-
I think the reason it will continue to suffer is that it takes a long time to get used to the characters and appreciate their quirks. A lot of them are not funny until you've been watching for several episodes, which hinders the drawing in of new viewers. Really dig the show though, it's right up there with The Office for me at this point, and sometimes actually BETTER.
-
Are you kidding me in my balls here?
-
I think it's time to change the format. First off, do we really need to see the ratings for every single week? Maybe we just need to see this week's and the previous two or three. You can tell us if the rating is the best, or worst, of the season - we'll believe you.It was fine when all you did was network shows. However, with the expanded list showing pretty much everything airing in PrimeTime, it might be helpful to re-arrange the list, or show it in a different way. Maybe colour-coordinate the shows, different colours for each time-slot. Or you could have one paragraph for the CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, CW, and then another block for the rest. Tiny print with a long row of numbers by each show, going on for rows and rows and rows, all monochrome, is not aesthetically pleasing.
-
I've tried watching both of them, because I love watching good funny sitcoms while I try to fall asleep. But I can;t stand either of them. They have laugh tracks. It;s like watching a sitcom from the 90s. Its sooo dated. The jokes are all punchlines. Not comedy from realism or characters, just out of reality punchlines, laugh track, then back to the story befor the next lame, forced joke. Who can watch that? What is wrong with America? Look at Modern Family. Hilariously entertaining. No fucking laugh track. All they do is take you out of the episode and take up time. I thought we got over that shit after Seinfeld and Friends ended. Arrested Development, Modern Family, Always Sunny, 30 Rock, Office, Parks & Rec, etc etc. These are all the real, smart, quality, funny shows on tv, and they dont use fucking laugh tracks. I just can't watch Big Bang Theory. It's not funny if people have to tell me when to laugh.

...but getting beaten by "Jersey Shore"? *Nobody* deserves that.

Snooki kicked the Crimson Chin's ass!

Seriously. Zucker got his contract renewed for 3 more years for FAILING?! What will the network be like in three years? Even one for that matter? Talk about Epic Fail.

If HEROES is indeed on the way out, I like the idea of a HOUSE/FRINGE Monday lineup. There's too much on Thursdays as it is.

And she said on her Facebook status, "Can't wait for season 2!!"I said, "Trust me... you can wait."I haven't watched Heroes since about the fourth or fifth episode of season 3, when I realized that I did not care anymore.
-
I like conan better, too, but jeez. the NBC debacle isn't Leno's fault. NBC screwed the pooch and they assume re-instating Leno is the way to fix it. Shit like this has been happening in broadcast TV for years. lol
-
Say what you will about it, the show makes no apologies for itself and it is what it is, as are the nutjobs that are on it. It takes itself way less seriously than a lot of other reality shows (actually, all of them) that pretend to be something more than then they are. I also think the real trash are people like John and Kate, the contestants on The Bachelor, and about 95% of the other reality shows... if you watch the Jersey Shore, I don't think those kids are anywhere near as bad as people are making them out to be (those people probably have never seen the show), and at least they have personality... I'd even go so far as to say they look out for one another and are more decent than the dooches that wind up on the real world and most other 'people in a house' type reality shows.
-
The more amusing part to me is the over the top outrage about Conan losing his job. This country is full of middle class people who have lost their jobs recently and more job losses are on the way. (The only reason unemployment is *just* 10.0% is that so many people have stopped looking for work and they aren't counted.) But Conan loses his NBC show and people here actually want Leno to die? Get some perspective. Conan will get a settlement worth tens of millions of dollars and a new show on a different network. And, ironically, this whole drama has given him material to the point where his Tonight Show is suddenly outstanding for the first time. The show being canceled made it great. This is the first time in ages that I've been excited about watching Conan and now I'll be really interested to see his next show.
-
was HAAWWT, yo. And no I'm not a pedophile, the actress is 20 in real life :p
-
I feel like I can relate. When season 3 started I was preoccupied and wound up falling behind for several weeks, by the time I was able to start catching up, I'd heard from so many people of how far the show had fallen, I lost all interest and never bothered going back, it really doesn't even exist to me anymore. Couldn't give a shit about it.
-
"A special Monday episode of “Fringe” did better than the last four new episodes of “Lie To Me” in that post-“House” timeslot. It was also “Fringe’s” best performance since its season premiere."
That's because Lie to Me is a horrible show, and Fringe remains the shit even in it's crap Thursday time slot. Swap the two, and watch Fringe and House Completely dominate the evening. -
Gee, this is the first I heard of this.
-
Too bad no one is watching. :(
-
that title is all wrong
-
Season 1 was really good stuff that left open a ton of possibilities ... for Season 2 to poop on. In fact, when everyone started having abilities, it reminded me of that line from "The Incredibles": "and when everyone's super; no one will be". Oh yeah ... I'VE ALWAYS HATED HIRO!! I don't even have to go into the way they rip-off X-Men whenever possible (this season's "Brotherhood of Mutants" is so blatant it's hilarious)
-
Villains was a pretty darn cool chapter. Sure, it had a few small flaws, but I loved the playing around with heroes acting like villains and villains acting like heroes. And it had a kick-ass second-to-last episode (the last episode of Villains felt more like an epilogue). I do have a question about Heroes, though - when did Ando's ability change from being able to super-power other heroes? He was the ultimate sidekick! Now he just acts like a human tazer...
-
The Tonight Show should have been Dave's! It was Johnny Carson's idea for Dave to be his successor! NBC sucks! They are canceling Conan, the same way they did the original "Star Trek"! Fuck NBC, Fuck Jay Leno!

The way you point out that Leno was beaten by Conan...
by pop_aristocrat
makes me think that on a normal night, Conan's ratings are even worse than Leno's. You never post the Tonight SHow's ratings, are they below 1.2? Is this typical for TOnight SHow? Doesn't Conan get some love?
-
He's screwed up NBC pretty bad, and the brass at NBC are the real bad guys not Leno. NBC as a whole needs a complete overhaul....including MSNBC which needs to get rid of about 50% of the shows if they ever hope to compete with the other news networks.
-
for late night are generally significantly lower than for primetime shows. Leno's 10pm show was primetime - getting 1.2 is ok for the CW in primetime, but for NBC it's considered dreadful. So The Tonight Show with Conan O'brien getting higher ratings at 11:30 than Leno at 10:00 is a big deal.
-
It has GOT to be cancelled at the end of this season, so I'm sticking with it just to say that I watched the whole damn thing like some kind of sick and twisted badge of honor.
-
I think Ando's always been able to do the taser thing, since the first time we see him using it is when Hiro pops into the future and sees Ando give his future-self the Hadoken. But you're right, that's -all- he's done so far. I've missed the last couple episodes, but I'm assuming eventually the carnival guy will get his hands on him and Ando will die.Sucks, he's been my favorite since the beginning, I'd be sad to see him go.
-
Go back and see/read what he said when the plan to install Conan was announced. Also take a look at the bullshit farewells within the past year. That, added to the original brouhaha when he got the TS gig just shows that the Nice Guy act was just that.Heroes--stopped after S3, but caught the promo last night that had Claire and Sylar; WTF? What about the lesbian roommate? Even if it's just a phony tease...how desperate is the show, and/or the promotions dept at this point?

This season has been the perfect second season of Heroes. I have the first season on DVD and I will obtain this one. Together, it is a perfect mini-series.
-
The job of a Late Show is to retain as much of the prime time audience going into it as it can. That is, the show preceding it (in this case, Leno), is considered the ceiling. That is the significance of Conan's show actually equalling or beating Leno's show. I'm with Howard Stern in that it may have been Leno's intention all along to put on a show with all the production values of public access in order to undermine Conan. The backstabbing by NBC occurred when they tied Leno as the opening act to Conan to begin with. Leno wins both the cashout he got when he first negotiated away his Tonight Show spot AND he gets the Tonight Show back. Calling eating and having one's cake, I believe. As a bonus, he prevented Conan from competing head-to-head with him all these years.
-
"Called" eating and having one's cake. And stealing someone else's cake, to boot.

I just think it's funny the irrational hatred some of you punks
by coughlins laws
have for Jay Leno. If you liked Conan O'Brien so much, why didn't you watch him when it would've made a difference?
-
Jan 19, 2010 9:57:10 AM CST
I've been watching Conan since the '90s -- when I was 13
by american mythos
And how is that hatred irrational? Leno is scum. Case in point:
1) Agent planted stories saying NBC planned to replace Carson with Leno; Carson said "to fuck with Jay's politicking" and retired.
2) Leno hid in a closet and spied on an NBC board meeting to gain the upperhand in negotiations.
3) During the writers strike, Leno was the only one of the big 3 hosts that didn't pay his staff; Conan paid out of pocket and Letterman struck a deal for CBS to his people.
4) Leno went to air using written material during the writers strike; claimed it didn't count since he wrote it himself. The only saving grace was that his material was shittier than the usual shittiness.
5) Unretired, destroyed NBC primetime, crippled local affiliates, and fucked Conan out of a show he was promised in 2004.
If you love him after all that, I can only fathom that you must be someone of similar character to Leno. -
1) Yes, it's true Helen Kushnick planted stories about Carson retiring. By all accounts she did this without Leno knowing and after he found out he went along with NBC firing her. As far as Carson, at that time, he was semi-retired for years anyway. He only worked 2 to 3 nights a week and took more vacations than Howard Stern. He was lazy and had no work ethic...2)So, he hid in a closet to find out what the sleazy NBC executives were trying to do about keeping Letterman and Leno at the same time. Explain how that makes him an asshole? Letterman fucked random sluts above the stage where he worked while his GF/Wife was at home...3 Why should Letterman get an unfair advantage over the Tonight Show because his writer's were in a separate union? Why was that fair. As far as Conan paying his writers, that goes against the whole spirit of what a strike is supposed to be about and what it's supposed to accomplish. Say I said I was going on a Hunger Strike and you slipped me a Big Mac. Am I really on strike anymore?4)Leno wrote his own shit. Conan, if you remember, came back on the air before the strike ended, too. Why does Leno get Hell for this from you when Conan doesn't?5) He never wanted to retire, NBC Primetime has sucked for years, NBC's fault more than his, why do you give Conan a pass for forcing Leno out of the Tonight Show when you are mad at Leno for forcing Carson out? Explain to me how it's any different? Carson was already semi-retired. NBC never promised Letterman the Tonight Show and he never asked for it. He assumed he'd get it. It sucks for him. Lesson learned. He's got a better deal at CBS and makes more money than he would if he took over the Tonight Show, even the the loser was 2nd or 3rd for 15 years. Why isn't Conan a scumbag to you when he forced NBC to fire Leno? Aren't you being a hypocrite?
-
When Conan came back on the air, he didn't do monologues or written sketches. He filled time with improvised gags like spinning his wedding ring on the desk or playing guitar with the band or messing around in the prop room. He even played Rock Band with his staff for chrissakes. He kept solidarity with the writers while making sure all his employees got a paycheck, something Leno didn't do. Leno wasn't forced out. Watch this video of Jay's retirement announcement from 2004: http://tinyurl.com/yjjkhu4
He didn't sound to me like he was pulled kicking and screaming from the Tonight Show, does he? If he didn't want to retire, why didn't he take a stand then, instead of letting Conan go five years under the false belief that the Tonight Show was his? Plus, NBC paid Jay a buttload of money for what was supposed to be his last five years, and he just reneges like that in the final year of receiving that buttload of cash? What the hell do you call that?
And who cares if Conan paid his staff. It was HIS decision. You mean the only thing you've got to use against him is that he's a really nice fucking guy? Haha! -
His "comedy" is middle-brow junk aimed at the lowest common denominator and designed to please the dullest middle-american stereotypes. Letterman was always his superior intellectually and comedically. Conan is the natural inheritor of Carson's legend. The Carson gene skipped a generation. Conan is smart, likable, quick-witted, self-deprecating, and hysterically funny. Leno is comedy mediocrity. He is also dishonest. He "retired" from the Tonight Show, then "unretired" to bring his mediocrity back to NBC at 10 PM, and now that this show has flamed out, he is welching on his original departure from the Tonight Show. A gracious and moral person might say, "I passed the Tonight Show on to Conan, and Conan should keep that show and it's time slot, and be given the time to build his audience, just as I was given that chance when the show was passed on to me". Instead, Leno is sleazing his way back into the show. Leno has all the integrity and charm of a con man selling used cars. He is ruining the integrity of the Tonight Show, and screwing over Conan's fans. I will never watch any show of Leno's, and will happily join any boycott of the revised "Tonight Show" and it's sponsors. Jeff Zucker sucks, and Jay Leno sucks also.

I don't have anything against Conan, just that he isn't
by coughlins laws
as funny as Leno, he didn't have any on-screen experience before being gifted the Late Night Show, and he showed no chance of ever beating Letterman, which Leno did convincingly for 15 years. Leno was being loyal to his bosses. The fact that he didn't go on the air and eviscerate them in a mean way every night like Letterman is one of the main reasons he got the job in the first place. He agreed to what they said. Then, when the 5 years were up, he was still under contract for another 8 or 9 months. NBC refused to let him leave. He would've had to stay off the air another year and couldn't take any offers from other networks. So, he went along with what they told him to do at 10pm. I'm sorry you hate his guts, but ratings are ratings. O'Brien lost 60% of the Tonight Show audience. He failed. It wouldn't have gotten better. If he gets another shot at another network, he will be in 3rd or 4th place behind Leno, Letterman, and Nightline. He's just not all that funny to adults and he looks out of place in L.A. as opposed to New York. I'm sorry it hurts your feelings that Conan got cancelled. He's a failure that doesn't work at 11:30pm...
-
Jan 19, 2010 12:54:40 PM CST
So barron, you're saying that Letterman and Conan are high-brow?
by coughlins laws
Really? A Masturbating Bear and jokes about 14 year old girls getting raped at Yankee's Stadium are aimed at the highest common denominator and designed to please the brightest of Americans? Really? Conan does NOT appeal to middle America because he's not that funny. He's frat-boy humor... As far as Conan's fans, there just aren't that many. If there were, he'd have gotten more than 2 million people watching a night. And don't give me all this lead-in Bullshit. It may have mattered more 20 years ago when there were less channels on and less remotes. But now, it is much less relevant. Besides, CBS has dominated NBC in Prime Time Ratings for years now and Leno was STILL kicking Letterman's ass every night, DOUBLING his ratings, despite no lead-ins...
-
Do you yell that at the residents of Seniors' Homes as you drive by? Let's see how eager you are to go into the office every day, after working the same job for 30 years, when you are pushing 70."Why should Letterman get an unfair advantage over the Tonight Show because his writer's were in a separate union?"They weren't in a separate union. Letterman's Worldwide Pants made a deal with the WGA that allowed his, and Craig Ferguson's, writers to work during the strike. I believe the deal was akin to them being paid according to their pre-strike deals, and would be paid retroactively whatever extra was gained once the strike was settled. Leno & Conan went back on the air without writers (I've never heard before that Conan supposedly was paying his writers out of his own pocket). I don't remember Conan getting grief for putting on his show without writers, but Leno was chastised for seemingly using "written" material.

If Carson wants the best job on TV and the best job in comedy
by coughlins laws
then he should've worked more than 100 days a year. He was part-time by the time Leno took over. Leno was on the air more nights a week than Carson at the time and his ratings were higher when he was on. Leno works twice as hard as Letterman. Letterman takes more vacations and doesn't work Fridays. As far as WorldWide Pants writers going back to work early, don't you think those writers betrayed their fellow striking TV workers throughout TV and Film? Writers on other shows were still starving and those pricks went back to work, leaving other writer's hanging out to dry...
-
Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it is good. Leno did well in the ratings because his comedy was watered down to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Letterman and O'Brien have not achieved Leno's type of ratings primarily because their humor is more edgy, absurdist, and hip. Leno appealed to a more middle-of-the-road sensibility, whereas Letterman and O'Brien pushed more envelopes. This is why Leno pulled the ratings that he did: quantity over quality. From a strictly business point of view, NBC probably should have left him doing the same routine at the Tonight Show until he finally burned out or just flat-out retired. I am not making an argument over his ratings, though. I am making an argument over the quality of his comedy, and the nature of his character. The reason I am angry is that I am a fan of O'Brien's (as well as Letterman's), and I am pissed that O'Brien is being forced off the air. To say that this is his fault and that he is a "failure" is nonsense, in my opinion. Whoever came up with the idea of putting Leno on five days a week at 10 PM is the one responsible. It was an obvious formula for a clusterfuck, readily apparent to even those of us without insider experience in the broadcasting business. It is obvious that the mainstream types who like Leno might watch his 10 PM show, but then would have their fill of that type of format for the night, and then shut off their TVs for the evening. Hipper audiences and other late-nighters would likely avoid the earlier show. Thus, the audience would be split, and neither the 10 PM show nor the new Tonight Show would win. Further, Conan would be at a disadvantage in building a new audience, and he was given little time to do so. This was a formula designed to fail, and it is not O'Brien's fault at all, but rather the numbskulls who came up with this 10 PM Leno show idea. It was doomed to fail. ***As far as Leno's character goes, I think that he is behaving reprehensibly. He has a rather passive-aggressive character, and rather than exiting the Tonight Show gracefully and honorably passing the torch to his successor, he has undermined Conan and insulted his fans by sleazing his way back into the Tonight Show after he had already left it. If he had integrity about it, he would have backed Conan and the show more strongly, and exited the stage with some grace, rather than hanging on for whatever the reason might be. Conan, on the other hand, is acting with more integrity. If he were purely more self-interested, he would have taken NBC's offer to go on after Midnight. He rightly discerned that this would be another insult to the late-night schedule, and another fuck-up akin to the half-measures of establishing the 10 PM Leno show. So, Conan, who picked up his entire show (writers, crew) and their families and moved to California for NBC, is treated with disrespect for his sincere efforts. Ultimately, I think that NBC made a major error by establishing the 10 PM Leno show, and the mismangement of the Late Night roster by NBC is to blame for this debacle, not Conan.

So, baron, are you saying the majority of middle America
by coughlins laws
shouldn't be entertained because you don't like Leno? What? Conan will get a new job. And he can continue to entertain the million or so people that like him. Don't you worry. Meanwhile, Leno will go back to where he dominated over the elitist, Big-City, anti-small town, mean-spirited humor dished out by Letterman. I'm sorry that Leno doesn't entertain you and just because someone appeals to more people doesn't make them better quality. You are being just as much of an arrogant prick as the Letterman's of the world. Your snobbish, elitist attitude is off-putting. You are basically saying that "your" brand of comedy is better because it's "edgier". Why can't it just be different? Why do you have to pretend you're better? Look, I don't think there's anything high-brow or edgy about a Masturbating Bear. How is that "quality" humor? You see, this is why most of America is turned off by East and West Coast arrogance and condescension. You down to those who disagree with you and act like you are somehow more cultured or better than we are. Well, you're not. Why can't it just be a different sense of humor? Why does all humor have to be edgy? I really don't understand this superiority you think you have over me because I, like most of Late Night viewers, think that Leno is better than Conan...
-
Jan 19, 2010 6:09:42 PM CST
Again, you keep overlooking the fact that Conan forced
by coughlins laws
Leno out. If Conan had any integrity, he wouldn't have forced NBC to guarantee him the Tonight Show and force Leno to retire before he wanted to. Leno has done nothing wrong. He's done nothing but kick his competition's ass for 15 years and go to a losing spot on the Prime Time schedule. I think it's refreshing seeing someone who is loyal to his employers...
-
dollars to do nothing but walk away. That shows alot of integrity. Guess he needs it for his kids, like Kimmel said, huh?
-
Stop putting words in my mouth and mischaracterizing my statements. I have nothing against people who do not live on the coasts. There are plenty of assholes and morons on the coasts, and plenty of hip, smart, edgy people who come from the flyover states (Letterman is from Indiana, for example). What I am saying is that Leno's "comedy" has always seemed like weak tea to me when compared to Letterman or O'Brien, and his stuff is deliberately designed to be watered down like this simply for ratings. His comedy sucks; it is like fake cheese. I'm sorry if you interpret this as "snobbish" or "elitist". Not liking mediocre junk doesn't make me elitist; it just makes me someone who doesn't like mediocre junk. As far as Conan and Letterman being "high-brow", I am not arguing that they are Noel-Fucking-Coward or something. What I am arguing is that they do not put out bland, inoffensive pap designed not to upset old folks in the suburbs so as to appeal to the broadest possible audience. This is comedy by focus group, not comedy developed for it's own sake. Yes, Letterman and Conan can be childish and juvenile sometimes, but comedy itself has an inherent quality that appeals to the adolescent in us all. That doesn't make their stuff medicore and bland and inoffensive, like Leno. Letterman and Conan's humor comes from a more clever and edgier place than Leno's, and is of a higher quality therefore, in my opinion. Sorry if this insults your view of Leno. As far as "middle America" having the right to be entertained: sure, fine. I have no problem with middle of the road comedies being on; there are plenty of channels on TV. My problem is when something medicore (Leno) forces out something good (Conan). Again, just becuase something is popular doesn't make it good, and vice versa.
-
That is absurd revisionism. Conan's contract was going to be up, so to ensure that NBC held on to him, the NBC execs decided that in five years (the decision was made in 2004), Leno would be retired from the Tonight Show, and Conan would take over. This was a move by NBC, not by O'Brien or Leno. IT made sense at the time also, since Leno would not go on forever, and O'Brien was entitled to leave NBC if he wanted to when his contract was up. I think that maybe it would have been a better idea to keep everyone in place for another five years or so, since Leno was doing so well in the ratings. But, you can understand that NBC was probably anxious to get a proven younger host into the Tonight Show while they still had Conan. Hindsight is 20/20, but in retrospect, everyone would probably have been better off if they paid everyone to stay in place until around 2015, say. But, Leno was not getting any younger, Conan was probably anxious to make the move, and NBC made a decision. I don't think that it was entirely a bad decision, maybe just a bit premature. Conan could have (and probably would have) settled inot the Tonight Show and built up a good audience over time. He has not been given adequate time or support. To me, the fatal error was in giving Leno a 10 PM show. It is at the root of this debacle. Leno chose not to go away gracefully. Instead he clung on, and along with the misguided NBC execs, came up with this nonsense 10PM experiment that failed, killing the lead-in to the 11PM news, and undercutting the Tonight Show audience, which was therefore handicapped from the start, putting Conan at a multiple disadvantage. To shift this blame onto Conan and away from Leno and the NBC execs is nonsense.
-
O'Brien and his crew have worked faithfully in New York for years and years for NBC, creating a consistent and high quality late night comedy show. NBC chose to give Conan and his people the Tonight Show, but from the beginning they have failed to support him and his show properly. Leno, rather than leaving gracefully, hung on ridiculously and in a passive-aggresive manner, by creating this 10 PM show. Can you imagine if back in the day Carson retired from the Tonight Show, handed it off to Leno, and then immediately came back out of "retirement" to put on a 10 PM show that is basically the Tonight Show Light? Leno never would have gotten off the ground to begin with, although I think that Carson would have succeeded even in a 10 PM slot, such was his talent. In any case, Leno's "un-retirement" was disingenuous and two-faced to begin with, not to mention a colosally bad business and ratings idea. It completely undercut the Tonight Show (not to mention the 11PM news), and was a recipe for failure. In addition, it was an insult to Conan and his people, who never were given a proper chance and enough time to build an audience for their new show. This is Leno's fault and NBC's fault. Conan, who has had a successful show and a great team for years and years, has had his career and his team damaged by the incompetent and greedy skull-duggery of Leno and the NBC execs (Zucker, et al). Conan had every right to think that he was going to be the successful host of the Tonight Show for years and years. Now he and his people have been robbed of that opportunity through no fault of their own. I guarantee you that Conan and his people would have much rather stayed at the Tonight Show and be given the chance that they were promised by NBC, to make the show a success. If Conan were a sleazeball like Leno, and if he didn't care about the Tonight Show and his own integrity, he would have taken the orignal deal to go on after Leno at 12:05 AM. Career-wise, this was probably the smarter move. He could have just stayed on NBC, and waited out Leno's new show at 11:30, and then moved into the 11:30 slot again when Leno eventually left in the future. Instead, Conan understood that this plan was another half-measure (like Leno's 10 PM Debacle) that would be damaging to the Tonight Show. Conan stuck to principle rather than self-interest. Conan was promised the Tonight Show, and has had it ripped out from underneath him by the sleazy, passive-aggressive Leno, and the greedy, incompetent NBC execs. Conan's career may be permanently damaged by NBC as a result of them not supporting him as host. He deserves every red cent of his severence package, and so does his crew, who moved their families and their lives out to L.A. based upon a promise that NBC has renegded upon. NBC and Leno have acted reprehensibly, and Conan has acted with integrity, dignity, and principle. He deserves his multi-million payout, and hopefully a successful show on another network, perhaps Comedy Central, where fans can watch him and ignore the unfunny and annoying Jay Leno.
