A brief look at OSMOSIS JONES

Published at:  Sep 15, 1999 4:58:56 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a brief little update here about OSMOSIS JONES, a film that I am continuing to here good strong buzz as a project. So we'll see if it's the ol case of third times the charm. Whaddaya think folks? We'll see. At least Warners decided to roll out the red carpet in a huge way for an IRON GIANT DVD and VIDEO release... though.... ya know... I really wish they'd do a secondary theatrical release pushing for some Oscar recognition... well... maybe that's part of this video tado.

Quest for Camelot... Strike One (didn't earn money and it sucked)

The Iron Giant...... Strike Two (was brilliant and destroyed by the most incompetent marketing squad on planet Earth)

Osmosis Jones....... ??????????

Warner Brothers is taking one more swing at the
animation game. Their vehicle is called Osmosis
Jones.

Osmosis Jones is your typical cop story, BUT WITH A
TWIST, and it might just work. You see Osmosis Jones
takes place inside the human body. Osmosis Jones is a
cop trying to catch a virus in the City of Frank.
Frank, of course, being the body Osmosis lives in. To
battle the virus he is partnered with Drixoral, a 12
hour flu capsule. Oh course, Osmosis only works alone
so laughs are sure to follow. Seriously thought, I've
seen some early footage and it looks good.

Chris Rock will do Osmosis's voice.

David Hyde Pierce will do Drixoral.

Brandy will voice Osmosis's girlfriend.

I almost forgot, William Shatner will do the Mayor's
voice.

Set for release November 2000.

    Could be fun

    by walter burns

Nice set up. Still, I wonder if the whole concept can support a feature length film - sounds more like an idea for a fun short. We shall see....

    seems promising. . .

    by madboy

Sounds like an animated Fantastic Voyage meets Beverly Hills Cop. It's nice to see something a little more innovative and original. I'm all for it, and I hope this turns out as cool as it sounds. And who can lose with Chris Rock, even though he's given some uneven film performances.

    This should be the sh*t

    by hujardon

Tom Sito is directing this. He was one of my animation teachers and he's funny as hell. Sito and Chris Rock, man would I like to be in that room.

ONce CG character in this film. rest is 2D. With some weak ass concept art.

ps. Iron Giant is a cliched character/film. they've gotta think of something better.

    Innovative?

    by roy desoto

"Sounds like an animated Fantastic Voyage meets Beverly Hills Cop"
Doesn't sound inovative to me. Kind of cool, yes- but nothing different.

    Big Osmosis Style?

    by narf

I had originally heard that Will "Man, do I suck" Smith was going to play the lead in this flick. I'm so glad somebody realized that he's a talentless pile of nothing, useful only when a movie desperately needs somebody to say "DAMN!" to an attractive woman, and Martin Lawrence isn't available. Chris Rock is about the best choice anybody could ever come up with. Let's hope they don't waste him, which they will.

    WB Animation

    by mr. loolar

Harry, don't forget the abortive THE KING AND I, one of the most dismally constructed embarrassments ever to make me shift in my seat, horrified.
Combined with formulaic dreck like QUEST FOR CAMELOT (proving Disney's formula only works because it has Disney's name on it), is it any wonder WB decided to play it safe with IRON GIANT? *********** Funny, I had some friends who actually liked the Scorpions' song commercial. Still, IG isn't dead yet -- there's word afoot of a huge promotional push for the video (although I'd prefer a holiday re-release). ************
So along comes OSMOSIS JONES. Big names (I simply can't wait to hear William Shatner, who I love no matter what the egomaniacal over-actor does, despite myself), and a fun if somewhat "high concept" (read: unoriginal) story. I'll reserve judgment, but it sounds promising so far... Cheers, Mr. Loolar.

    Unoriginal?!?

    by prankster

I can't believe people are calling a movie about a white blood cell hunting down viruses in a shaft-style cop movie set within the human bloodstream "unoriginal"! Where the hell have you ever seen anything like that before? It's certainly a huge departure for an animated film. I haven't seen Sito's short film, T.R.A.N.S.I.T., but I'm told it's brilliant. My hopes are riding high--WB really does have one of the most incredible animated films divisions, they're just hamstrung by the lame-ass corporate losers in charge. And by the way, WB didn't do "The King And I", they just made the idiotic mistake of buying it and putting it on the big screen with their name on it, thereby making their animated division look totally incompetent. I still say, if they hadn't done that, Iron Giant might have been a success.

    Osmosis Jones

    by the big t

Big T here. I must say Osmosis Jones sounds like a killer setup kind of a semi spoof film. As for the cast I think they are all perfect except for Brandy sweet god I hate that thinks she can act bitch groan. Although I think Chris Rock will pretty much run the show. As for David Hyde Pierce I am kind of surprised they got him he just did work in A Bug's Life and he seems kind of picky in his choice of work. I think this is a very good sign. Big T out.

    This isn't Inner Space.

    by all thumbs

This is about as original as animation can get. Sure, there have been "inside the body" movies in the past, but they are mostly about people getting shrunk and sent in to take care of the situation. This looks like if it's done right it can be both original and fun to watch; a real classic. And when is Iron Giant coming out on video again...I haven't seen it yet and want to know what all the AICN hype is about.

    Osmosis Jones & Iron Giant

    by tgdbar

Osmosis Jones does sound like a fun idea. Hopefully it will have enough money to finish the production.

Iron Giant will be out on DVD and video tape at Thanksgiving. But why wait? It is still playing theatrically in a lot of places, and should be at the "$1.00" houses if nothing else. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I thought the characters could have been a little better, except for the Giant and Hogarth (the kid). They were perfect. I especially loved a scene where the Giant rolls over on his back and looks wistfully up at the stars and then sighs. Fully believable to me. There are lots of wonderful scenes to the movie, and NO SINGING CUTE ANIMAL SIDEKICKS.

Hey, lay off ol' Sarin Rufus. We all get to say our peace here. He (she?) is O.K. in my book.
As for OSMOSIS JONES, it sounds like a movie that is just weird enough for me to like. Alas, Warner Bros. will find a way to mess it up. Watch, next week--Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are attached as producers in the upcoming OSMOSIS JONES.

I meant in terms of your AICN character, you are playing a character, right? Or are you actually this bitchy in real life? BTW, America? Not likely!

    What a piece of garbage

    by sketchy

Chris Rock is funny for ten minutes at most, but he's not funny for an hour and a half. In fact he's annoying. Besides it'll probably be g rated and he won't be able to tell the controversial 'r' rated jokes which he is known for. The other guy is annoying and Brandy???????? This sounds like a nightmare of a movie, and I haven't even touched upon the story which sounds lame as hell. This movie is going to be such a piece of garbage. I know it's going to be one of those Hercules esque movies with tons and tons of jokes and no heart. Except of course it won't have the Disney artistic talent, so the animation and everything else will look like crap.

    Piet Kroon

    by irie

Piet Kroon was the first director on "Osmosis Jones," and he guided it through it's first year (after finishing his film "T.R.A.N.S.I.T." Tom Sito came to Warners after being let go by Dreamworks. He is co-directing under Piet.
