Report: NBC Affiliates Saw 25% Newscast Decline During LENO Era!! Tales of NBC Pinheads!!

Published at:  Jan 14, 2010 1:19:32 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

NBC affiliates would have lost an estimated $22 million over a three-month period if NBC stuck with “The Jay Leno Show,” according to research firm Harmelin Media, which indicated local affiliates saw their late news audience drop by an average of 25% in November compared with the previous year in a key advertising demo. Find all of the Associated Press’ story on that matter here.

In other late-night news, I thought I read Jimmy Fallon will appear on “The Jay Leno Show’s” horrible 10@10 segment Thursday, presumably to signify that he’s on Team Jay, but now I'm told it's actually Jimmy Kimmel who's on the segment tonight.

When I thought it was Fallon I was reminded of how NBC forced Letterman to book Leno shortly after Leno was named Johnny Carson’s successor as host of “The Tonight Show”:

Conan O'Brien, meanwhile, has invited notorious Leno-hater Howard Stern to appear on “Tonight.” Stern says he'd love to do it if he didn't have to fly to California.

Here’s Dave with “Tales of the NBC Pinheads” from Wednesday night:

What NBC ran at 10 p.m., autumn 2008:

Monday: My Own Worst Enemy
Tuesday: Law & Order: SVU
Wednesday: Law & Order
Thursday: ER
Friday: Lipstick Jungle

    Yes it would...

    by red ned lynch

...JettL, I have never addressed you before and probably won't again. You're clearly enjoying this thing you do, it doesn't bother me and so I have no reason to. But unlike most of the little imaginary scenarios you create for yourself to appear in this one in no single place swerves close enough to reality to not absolutely reveal your ignorance to even the most casual reader. 250 million would be an unreasonable amount for breaching the contract of Leno or Conan. It is more money, for instance, than total ad revenue from both Leno and Conan's shows since this experiment began. At the moment NBC most certainly doesn't have deep pockets. If you read any trade publication you would know the reasons why. You don't have to be an insider who has contributed, across studio and representation lines to almost every blockbuster of the last decade to read these publications, but that fictional person would, in fact, be reading them. I'm not asking you to stop what you do. It's clearly important to you, and sometimes it has even made me laugh. But this one is too stupid. It's not saying Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast for a part that doesn't appear to exist in a movie that is so far from being made that no contracts would be signed for talent yet, most especially a well under the title supporting role. On this one you're wandering through weeds of ignorance that even the most casual reader of EW or Lainey's Gossip can identify. You're suggesting a ridiculous solution, one which would never be entertained for even a heartbeat by anyone involved, and adding the cherry on top of a quarter billion dollar payoff to a wheelman whose entire contract is not one one hundredth that amount. I'm not saying stop. I'm saying do enough research before you make up your story to make it at least credible-lite.

    Jimmy Fallon....

    by indiana-joe

needs to come down with the flu or something really quick. If he doesn't call in sick and goes on Leno it's going to be something that sticks with him for the rest of his career. Or he can go on. Who really gives a shit? It's Jimmy Fallon. Him appearing on Leno isn't changing anybody's mind on the debate but it brands him an asshole if he looks too enthusiastic about Leno coming back. I also have to say that after watching Conan this week it almost seems like NBC is hoping he can stir the pot enough that Leno goes away in shame. The network has hours after the taping to see what he says and since it's getting on their own network it seems like they might be leaning towards Team CoCo even though Conan talks like he's already gone.

he basically stated his neutralness on last night show, basically saying that both conan and leno told him to "not take it too seriously" when he started the show. he did seem genuinely grateful that conan was sacrificing in part to keep him at 12:35.

So I watched both Jay and Conan last night

    by samuel fulmer

Leno was very lame. There were a couple of semi-funny jokes in his monologue, but the rest of the show was awful. I know it may have been cool back in 1995 to show videos of people whacking their balls while skateboarding, but at least try to get something that wasn't scammed from youtube. Conan's show was much better (funnier monologue, funnier skits, and better interviews). And I hadn't really seen Jay in a while, but the guy really is looking quite tired now.

    One has to wonder.

    by mooly

Since Jay's monologue will mostly be riffing on the daily news headlines...could it be people no longer feel the need to hear the same stories later on in the news. Because these days, the news rarely covers anything more in depth or with more insight than the local comedians anyway. I don't know. I just know I agree with the people who think Leno is not at all funny.

    by samuel fulmer

Heidi Klum asked Jay how he got married, and Jay told her that bascially he married his wife so they could both have health insurance. He then said he didn't get her an engagement ring until 17 years later. Kind of sums the guy up in a nutshell.

    If Fallon appears on Leno...

    by kazamasmokers

... the majority of his fans will turn on him. I can't believe no one is there for him to stop him from doing this. Right now Fallon's show has this sort of dangerous vibe about it, in that you never know when they're going to do a bit that is so weird you get that Andy Kaufman kind of response from the audience. That's because his audience perceives Fallon as a guy who the suits at NBC truly don't "get", and they like that. He's perceived as an outsider, and if the viewer finds out that this perception has just been some sort of scam, they will all turn on Fallon with a vengeance.. and for the rest of his sorry career. Someone tell Jimmy - DON'T DO THIS.

Still have brains. Which is why Leno does so bad in the 10pm slot. People who stay up to watch the 11:30 show are almost exclusively old people who's brains have turned to mush and simply have insomnia and lack the taste to watch anything good. People who stay up and watch the 12:30 show are the ones who lit up big fat joints at 12. And there my friends, is an explanation of the demographics that the studios are just not willing to face.

    1) you can't have a dumb fuck like Leno in the 10pm slot and expect him to do well. To the 10pm slot watchers, Leno is a walking caricature, an unwitting parody of a talk show host.2) The lowest common denominator is the target audience for the Johnny slot, you need to fill this with the dumbest shit on your schedule. If ABC were to simply run Bob Saget America's Funniest Home Videos reruns in this slot, or Fox to run a police chase footage show, they would destroy Leno's ratings. 3) 12:30-on is the hour of the pothead, so you need a weirdo like Conan to grab their attention.

Are you sure? If Conan's stock goes down because of this, I can't see how Jay's won't either. The 10 pm slot will be a mess for a while. He's going to have a poor lead in. Even if he returns to 11:35 and wins the late night wars, for how long? Conan was the best choice they had for tonight show host for the long term. So when the eventual Leno retirement happens (and it's going to be sooner than later), who is going to host, Jimmy Fallon??? This whole fiasco has truly exposed Jay. As much as he's going to try to shake it off, he's looking more and more Nixonian (as Patton Oswalt has pointed out).

BTW- is it me or has anybody else noticed that Leno seems a little more smug on his 10PM shows this week?

I don't think the people running NBC can't connect Leno ratings drain effect on local news with the drain he may also have given Conan on the Tonight Show. As far as Jay being more smug, I have no clue. I will say that his show was terrible last night, and Conan's was classic. I hate to use cliche terms, but Conan's show is definitly getting the buzz (his ratings are going up), and Leno's not.

you dont know that..viwers are very fickle..NBC thought that they would follow Leno to 10 and they didnt...facts are this...Lenos show failed...causing the news and tonight show to get bad ratings because it was a poor lead in...if anything, NBC should let Leno go.put some prime stuff on at 10 and see what happens then...they really havent given conan the chance...the low overhead to lenos show is the only reason why its still on NOW...had it been a drama with these ratings...and like that ...gone!

Last night's Leno was only the 2nd time I've watched it at 10 PM and I thought it was awful as well; and I missed Conan. Heidi Klum driving around on that lame green track thing should be fodder for Youtube not the other way around. I haven't been able to stomach Leno for years now and applauded the change-over until the ill-conceived Leno at 10PM annoucement. At that point I could only hope for abject failure. But to take a HUGE step backwards and bump Conan is worse. How much is NBC paying those idiots to make these decisions?

    It's about the monologue

    by moviegimp

The reason why Jay was picked to replace Johnny and the reason he was number one for all those years is because like Johnny he has a great monologue. You can watch Jay and know what happened without watching the news. Jay is topical. Compare the others, they have very short monologues with a lot of lame humor. Jay filled in for Johnny a lot as guest host. It made a lot of sense to pick him over Dave. As has been proven for many, many years NBC chose right.

Now they want him back at 11:30 to be number one again. Will it happen? Who knows. If nothing else happens though everyone in late night is way funnier than they have been in years. Besides Jay and Craig, they have been consistently funny.

Leno spent a good portion of his show last night featuring on-line videos. Is he really that unoriginal. I mean it was basically the schtick Bob Saget did on ABC back in his America's Funniest Videos Days. Maybe next he can rip off Mystery Science Theatre by taking old genre movies and riffing on them while his chin silhouette appears in the foreground (maybe he's already done this).

What you ahve failed to realize is that NBC has been negotiating for me to write, produce and be Conan's side kick for close to 600 million. I so far have declined the offer becuse I feel that I should have 15% conrolling stock of NBC to do this for them. ANdy Richter is on board wiht me becoming side kick, but he will not move off the couch for Leno. If NBC meets my demands I have told Richter I woil write and star in a new comedy for him to be aired on FOX and ABC. This wil happen because NBC has deep pockets and my new girlfriend Natalie Portman thinks it's a fantastic idea.

    LETTERMAN NEEDS TO CHILL

    by j-dizzle

At first I loved Letterman's take on the Conan-Leno-NBC debacle. But the more he rants on about it, the less his support for Conan seems (to me, can't speak for others) sincere. The way I'm starting see it, Letterman is just using Conan's position as an excuse for him rip into NBC to satisfy his own personal grudge.

As a huge Conan fan, I take exception to this. When this news broke, the most Letterman said about Conan was that "he was a very nice man." After that, its just been a continuous rant about how much NBC and Leno suck because they screwed him over all those years ago and less about how Conan is getting figuratively fucked in the arse.

And I now see Kimmel will be on Leno's show?? Jesus, does anyone truely and sincerely support Conan on this, or are all those late night hosts just in it for their own personal gain? If its the latter, then they're no different from Leno.

There are other choices at 10pm

    by moviegimp

I love Jay's humor. I'm old, I don't care, it's funny, funny not weird funny like Dave. That being said though there are different choices at 10pm than 11:35pm. Once you get to late night you watch Dave or Jay or Nightline or a rerun of something. Perhaps Jay's ratings had nothing to do with his show and had everything to do with more choices. Right now there is Dave, Conan and Nightline or reruns. Neither one of them are that funny, til lately, so there are fewer choices. Dave and Conan are cut from the same cloth. They are both weird funny. There is no choice.

    The Letterman stuff

    by samuel fulmer

I agree that's coming more from his hatred of Leno and NBC than any support for Conan. If anything, this whole mess has helped and will continue to help Letterman's ratings. And then if he comes out as someone who despises Leno, he may be hoping to gain some of the the Conan audience that won't be watching Leno. That being said, I think it's a good thing that he's calling out Leno and NBC. He's the only one who doesn't care (much more so than even Conan at this point) about what he says about the issue.

He is a unique position to just torch all parties involved in this with extreme prejudice. After all he got screwed out of The Tonight Show first; and *he* was Johnny Carson's hand-picked, preferred successor. It's very telling that Carson made a handful of appearances on Letterman's show; but never associated himself with NBC or The Tonight Show again following his retirement.

    by samuel fulmer

Probably because the Leno's nice guy persona has once and for all been blown to pieces. Letterman's had his personal issues, but he's always come off as a jerk, so it's not a shock. More people are shocked when Jay Leno gets exposed (especially those unaware of how he originally got the Tonight Show).

    DarfurOnTheRocks2-And Jay hasn't

    by samuel fulmer

How do we know Jay hasn't cheated on his wife. We wouldn't know about Dave had it not been for a blackmailing scandal. But back to the point, I'm not giving Letterman the moral highground, I'm just saying that Jay is percieved by most of America as Mr. Nice Guy. Dave was never seen as Mr. Nice Guy. I think in a lot of ways this is why Leno had a bigger audience. Now that he has been exposed for all to see, he's tarnished to a degree. It's like the Tiger Woods thing. He had a nice guy image, and now look at how loved he is.

because someone literally was blackmailing him. He didn't then go hide in a closet to eavesdrop on CBS executives in order to find out whether or not he still had a job.

Nobody is perfect, but my respect for someone comes from how they handle major life issues. Dave is a stand-up guy. Leno is a passive-aggressive douche who lets everyone else take the blame for his problems.

    by guy grand

When Jay's staff waltzed onto the NBC lot back in '92, they were extremely disrespectful of Carson and his people. I was at the studio then in the exec offices and knew all the players on both sides. While Jay's bombastic shit of a manager, Helen Kushnick, caused a ruckus, literally screaming at Carson's staff to move their shit out of the way, Jay was Mr. Smiley, gladhanding everybody and hiding behind her pitbull tactics. The Carson people -- those that didn't jump ship and clambered aboard Jay's program -- all thought Jay's staff were arrogant little shits. When Helen kicked the bucket in '96, Jay was forced to let his real nature show more and more. He's become quite the little weasly manipulator since.
