Basil Gogos has painted a new WOLFMAN!!!!
Hey folks, Harry here with a link over to CHUD for a story I'm just downright jealous of. I mean, green in the face ENVY! You see, those many moons ago when I was on THE WOLFMAN set, I sat down with Benicio DelToro and told him in no uncertain terms that I'd take his geek card away if he didn't force UNIVERSAL to commission a BASIL GOGOS of him as the WOLFMAN. It should be printed and issued as VINYL BANNERS in theaters. Glued to the side of buildings! I also understand why CHUD put a tag on the image, but dammit... I want a huge clean copy for my desktop! ANYWAY - go check out Devin's awesome scoop!

And everyone should thank me for showing incredible restraint
by moondoggy2u
no shouts of "first" or anything....<p>Aint that cool?
-
Werewolves scare the shit out of me, and I think we're in for a good scare here. And moondoggy2u, thank you for not writing first. That shit pisses me right the fuck off.
-
A dying art, unfortunately, along with everything else. So many posters are that cheap photoshop cut-and-paste crap now...
-
A painted piece of ARTWORK, not some photoshopped floating head bullshit. Hats off to Johnston & Co. for having class with this poster. It bodes well for the movie.
-
This is SO COOL (and I'm sorry you didn't get the scoop, Harry!) that I have no words to describe it. Anyone here that doesn't understand why this is cool (or know who Basil Gogos is) needs some geek history lessons! This is not a movie poster, it's a Basil Gogos original "Wolfman"! Must. Have. Print. Now.
-
...Thomas Kinkade.<P>I didn't mean that quite as mean as it sounds.

Harry, I think a little Basil Gogos info is needed.
by The Reluctant Austinite
Maybe you could write a quick bio on Gogos and show some of his work so the younger fans here can see where the excitment comes from. I doubt most of the kids reading this remember "Famous Monsters of Filmland." If anyone is interested, I HIGHLY reccomend a book called "Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos."

even a man who is pure at heart<p>and says his prayers by night<p>may become a MEH <p>when the MEHbane blooms<p>and the autumn moon is bright.
-
For one of the most name-dropped sites out there, you don't really get the goods, do you???
-
Always beats AICN with new news...Harry is to slow...AGAIN! Poster is meh...
-
. . . once its finished.
-
to complete it...
-
I could've painted that poster...and I paint with my dick!
-
Looks more like a hirstute HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME than wolfman...<p> Anyone else sense a slight air of 'retardation' in that image?<p> "The Bells. The Bells. The Moon. The Moon" said in retard voice.
-
His artwork with The Misfits is killer as is most of his Famous Monsters work. Definitely one of the only modern artist I look up to.
-
Why is it so important which website posts movie news first? I really don't care if a certain piece of movie news is a few days old or not, as long as its there. I dont have the time to scour every single website out there like some of you, so I like coming to just one site that posts most of the news I am looking for. Oh, and this poster is pretty cool. Looking forward to the movie...
-
I wonder if the typography will ruin it.<p>If nothing else it stands ten feet tall above the mediocre shit passing for poster art these days.

by Rage_Against_Martin_Sheen
his hair was perfect.
-
blah blah fucking blah.
-
that Robert Englund subliminally did in Wes Craven's New Nightmare!
-
80. This may not stand up next to his classic FM covers, but its definately his style.
-
Where are the DVD reviews?
-
I would like to go into stores all over and see items celebrating movie monsters of all kinds (although the ol' Universals definitely have a special place in me heart). Stuff like this is awesome.
-
Damn, it's been ages since I've seen painted movie art. Gogos as well. Way to score a certain crowd pleaser for those of us who've been around for a few decades. For those who haven't - I agree with The Reluctant Austeinite and maybe we can put a few bio details up. Gogos is a legend.
-
But that illustration is a piece of shit. Just because it was beloved in yesteryear doesn't mean it's even adequate today. It's awful.

Is The Wolfman Jabbing Himself in the Face With his own Thumb?
by Autodidact
Nice painting. But what the hell is going in the thumbnail/mouth area of the image?
-
I'm one of Gogos biggest fans. I do horror portraits, too, inspired by all the ones he did for FM. His stuff has kinda been different in the last few years, though. Some of them, like this one, seem kind of off, somehow.
-
I didn't know that the Wolfman had teeth coming out of his chin.
-
just not at the level I've come to expect from him.
-
Fuck you, tastefulness has no obligations. It's fucking ugly and I don't like it. Period.
-
But the hand is all off and totally fucking gnarled looking. He should have just painted the face. Where's the thumb?! Why does it look like a hand wearing a costume glove? Sorry everyone...the hand just pisses me off.
-
Pic is alright, but I'm dying to see this movie.
-
...especially after seein the poster JettL's brother, JedL, painted...now, that was art
-
Or something. Genetic engineering? Gypsy curse? Gypsy genetic engineering? Fucker looks rabid either way ... not something I'd want to run into in a dark alley.
-
I'm not saying you have to love it, just cut the guy, a living legend in fantasy art circles, a little slack.
-
..he-bitch man-slap someone
-
The mouth just... doesn't go like that.
-
are just coming from nowhere. It's bizarre. The moon bears little resemblance to the moon. Although I can take a guess what's happening in the picture the action just doesn't read. It kind of looks like he's being attacked by the fog or something. I can't think for any reason for one of his eyes to be closed. The hand...I just don't know. Oh well. Even Frazetta has a few paintings that don't quite work, as I'm certain is the case with all painters.
-
It's not terrible, but compared to most of his work, it's one of his weakest. It's definitely nothing to jump out of your skin over. I am glad he did it though, he's quite a legend.
-
Is that what's supposed to be going on there?
-
or a hairy sleestak? what's with the freddy krueger pose? looks like he's flashing a gang sign for "this shit is fugly"
-
Maybe they just did something to piss the old guy off. Maybe he wanted to punish them for remaking his beloved Wolf Man. I'm wondering what the hell happened here so in that sense the painting creates a sense of dread.
-
...no disrespect intended but this looks more like someone trying to "do" a Gogos than a Gogos. Age, I guess. <p> Phantom of the Opera! <p> Saw it without even closing your eyes, didn't you? Well, if you're a middle to old-timer, anyway.
-
"I'm wondering what the hell happened here so in that sense the painting creates a sense of dread."<br><br>Fucking brilliant. You just made my day.
-
"First you wanna get your big brush and we just (squiggle) do some trees there. Then (squiggle) some fog. And here with our medium brush (squiggle) a big fucking hard to understand area right in the middle of the image."
-
...I dont care what the haters say....
-
Love it!Fantastic artwork,forceful imagery
-
technically. I would have wished for an original image instead of a retread of the first pic that came out of this movie. Half awesome + Half lame.
-
I'm digging the exaggerated blues.
-
And not a single shirtless werewolf in sight!
-
and there are leg-humpers.
-
I was only vaguely aware of the artist, and only bc i remember seeing the monsters of filmland picture at some point long ago. Didnt know his name. Or i forgot. To me it looks like the artist fucked up the mouth or thumb cuz that part of the painting looks messed up. Im sure the guy is great, but not this time. No biggie
-
A bunch of you fuck-nuts must just not have any sense of taste.

Monet would shit a brick. A mottled, blue and green brick.
by Snake Foreskin
But it would still look better than the dreck that Basil Gogo- dancer foisted upon us.
-
It's ok, but the mouth s very messed up. Would like to see some of his other stuff though, any chance of a few screens of his best work Harry?
-
That's his most famous recent painting. Did some killer stuff for the Misfits. OTOH he recently did a homage to his first Famous Monster of Filmland cover(Vincent Price from House of Usher) and it looks almost as terrible as this one. His original Roderick Usher blows it away.

Thanks for the nice words, Harry. I'm sure Devin can send you a sensual hi-rez. I want one as well.
-
No snark, no criticism. That's just a thing of beauty.
-
You caught me off guard with that comment and I laughed pretty loudly, waking up the whole house.
-
...(and we're not revealing what that age would be), the image recreates something as reassuring as a comfy pair of slippers. It's a great piece, and one that evokes strong memories of Famous Monsters of Filmland. Oh, and we're hoping that the remake is going to be good, but not good enough to eclipse the original, which is still fucking awesome and the best movie in the Universal Monsters arsenal.
-
bashing Basil Gogos!? You fucking morons would lose all credibility if you had started out with any. What a joke. ha you gotta laugh.
-
Hey boys. Tell me you are in Scott Pilgrim :)
-
But I love Gogos.
-
Awesome
-
Hey to you, too! 'Fraid to say that we're not in Edgar's Scott Pilgrim opus, but we'll always work for him if he wants us :)
-
Well I'm sure you will appear in his next Pegg/Frost collaboration. You sort of their Bruce and Cambell now surely. <p>Player Two has left the game
-
even a cynical old man like me has to admit that poster is brilliant. Wow.
-
Once again, FUCK YOU for not having the dvd section up and ready. Two weeks in a row. FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU and FUCK YOU!

Basil's other work is iconic and beautiful. This one...not so mu
by Snake Foreskin
Poor basil. With his advanced age he is probably not in the best of health, and clearly is unable to paint as well as he used to. Either that or he didn't expend much energy on this one. Frankly it sucks.
-
Jan. 14, 2010, 8:56 a.m. CST
I wonder if they're really using it as the official poster
by chien_sale
I hope they have the balls to do that! So fantastic, though!
-
Anyone who's not familiar with the Gogos legend should pick up the 'Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos' book. Beautiful beautiful stuff.
-
Please, all you folks reacting according to geek law and praising this just because its handmade and made by someone who did good artwork a hundred years ago, use your eyes and look again. This is not a good painting. Its sloppy, the background looks like cheap concept art for a video game. The face itself is the only area where there is some amount of quality, probably because the old geezer has made a "paint by numbers" trick looking through a magnifying glass at the (photographed) movie poster. If you can´t see this, than accept that you know nothing about painting. Me myself, I know you see, because I´m an artist!
-
Yeah, sure you are. If you were, you'd know that art is subjective: eye of the beholder and all. But thanks for the "education".
-
Fuck this film is gonna stink of scrotum.
-
Please let me educate you some more! In this day and age everything seems to be subjective. There are however something called craftsmanship. My subjective opinion is that its lame with a painting made as a cheap copy of a photography, with a sloppy background. You can discuss quality in a painting in the same way you discuss the quality of a movie. Art is not sacred, its not magic. I´m sure you would disagree if I claimed that episode one was a brilliant movie. Well thats kind of what people do when they claim that this boring painting is made of gold. Basil was once a great artist, but hes very old now. Just because he was the one holding the brush doesn't make the painting great by default. Geeks often convince themselves that something is cool or great or awesome, just because it fits with what they think they already know. Luckily, there are REAL artist, like myself, around to enlighten these poor souls and make them understand that they are wrong!

For God's sake, Karl John, I hope that's irony I detect.
by The Reluctant Austinite
If not, you've got to be one of the biggest d-bags on the planet. I've yet to meet a good artist that enjoys calling himself an artist, and the general disrespect for our elders in your (and others) tone is inexcusable. You guys act like anyone over 50 is incapable of doing anything to add to the current culture, which is complete bullshit. The most dangerous thing I can think of is a young person who hardly knows anything (and doesn't feel they need to study history because it is doesn't apply anymore), but thinks they know everything. That's why there are so many shitty "artists" out there making films right now. Show some respect, or at least critic constructively without blaming quality on age, or shut the fuck up and post your own art for us to savage.
