Tom Hanks Is Getting Back In The Writer/Director Business!!
I am – Hercules!!
Tom Hanks, who wrote and directed the period rock-band romantic dramedy “That Thing You Do” in 1996, is getting back in the game!
He’ll be directing his “Charlie Wilson’s War” co-star Julia Roberts in “Larry Crowne,” which Variety says “centers on a middle-aged man being forced to find a new career.”
Hanks also wrote the screenplay.
I’m assuming he also plays the lead, but the Variety story is unclear on that point. Hanks played only a supporting role in “That Thing You Do.”
No distributor is yet attached.
While Hanks hasn’t directed any new big-screen fare in the last 14 years, he has since directed terrific episodes of his HBO miniseries “From the Earth to the Moon” and “Band of Brothers.” He also co-wrote four episodes of the acclaimed astronaut drama and the “Currahee” episode of the pay-cable war epic.
While I liked “That Thing You Do,” Hanks’ TV work – and his many interviews over the years – always suggested to me he could do loads better. Count me very excited about “Larry Crowne.”

Sigh, if only...
-
Pass.
-
I watch it any time I happen to come by it on tv.
-
Hanks! Raimi! Together at last!
-
I loved That Thing You Do, but that's just out there...
-
Solid Film.
-
SPIDER-MAN! There ya go! Hey...and maybe he could play J. Jonah Jameson!
-
mostly shitty lemon cremes that you have to spit out after half a bite.
-
from Family Guy. but I too love The Money Pit and That Thing You Do. I only recently watched the director's cut, it's like a hour longer. It's weird when you watch something 100s of times then all of a sudden there's this whole other version with all kinds of new stuff. anyways, I'm stoked to see whatever he does.
-
I especially disliked her Oscar Acceptance Speech, and the decision to give her the Oscar Award. I know she's great for the industry, but fuck that cunt.
-
There's a director's cut with a significant amount of footage added to That Thing You Do? I was unaware of this.
-
His current music is great- buy it.
-
That's what he's best at. I'm sick of seeing him acting (or, uh, being Shatner in the Robert Langdon flicks. But he is a big Star Trek fan so I guess that's okay). I liked him in That Thing You Do cause he's at best when he's just a jerk, really. It's funny. Do that.

Crossroads, the one in the middle about Dick Winters. Even if the real Dick Winters said it was kinda ridiculous. It's a killer piece of filmmaking, great use of O.S. sound and haunting little human moments.
-
I think this project is based on the book How Starbucks Saved My Life.
-
...Caught me by surprise. I was flipping channels and came across it, and it's one of those "watchable" movies where I can come in at any point and get sucked into it. Anyway, at first there were just a few moments where I said "huh... I never noticed that shot before", but as the movie went on there were a few new lines added and I suspected something was up. By the end, there are some significant differences and pretty lengthy scenes added. It was a fun way to discover that there was another cut out there.
-
It's been a decade, so get on it already! Why has he dropped the ball on this property? However, I'd hope he'd do a 2061 first.
-
:shrugs: ;)
-
And I will avoid this so she doesn't even get to see one penny of mine. Stole the Oscar from Ellen Burnstyn.

Tom Hanks directed an excelent episode of Band Of Brothers
by AsimovLives
And That Thing You do was quite a good movie. Hanks has got chops as director. I trust him.
-
doesn't sound as good.
-
AKA Man-Crush #5
-
Tom Hanks has no charisma? Ah, you poor naive FUCK tard. What's next on that list of yours? Zooey Deschanel isn't gorgeous?
-
I'll watch this. And also I'm amazed at how far Tom Hanks has come as an actor/producer since his old days. He's gone even farther than Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt.
-
Weird - I just watched that episode of Band of Brothers. It was on the movie network last night. I had never seen the show before, but it made me want to seek out the whole series.
-
John Williams, Han Zimmer or Michael Giacchino score. Randy Orton can be the wrestler Peter beats up. Stephen Lang as Uncle Ben, Amanda Seyfried (maybe too old for this partiqular role) as Gwen Stacy, and of course a great script it would be awesome.
-
...ya know, a sequel to Philadelphia... but instead of Hanks bein lovers wit Banderez, he could be lovers wit... Colin Hanks!
-
That way Tom can stick with acting
-
Just like a previous poster said this is one of those movies where I can turn it on at any point and just watch (its been in regular rotation on HBO lately) its by no means a great movie but its light, fun and entertaining. The songs are catchy as hell.
-
...you prefer him producin movies or producin untalented children? ho yea!
-
I can't stand that woman. I flat-out refuse to watch anything she's in. Worst. Actress. Ever. Last time I saw lips like that, they had a fishhook in 'em. Blech.
-
really is one of Tom's undiscovered gems. And second best movie Shelly Long ever made...
-
I think the German soldier smiles at him because he thinks Winters is another German. It doesn't dawn on the young kid until right at the last moment that "oh scheisse, we just got flanked and we're laying in the middle of an open field."
-
underrated. FACT.
-
he was fantastic as a dick in a league of their own. he is a very likeable actor but he does some terrific work when he's a jackass.
