Official!! The AMERICAN IDOL Season Launching This Week Will Be The Last For Simon!!

Published at:  Jan 11, 2010 11:41:54 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Simon Cowell, the star of television’s most watched series, is leaving “American Idol” this May, Fox confirmed Monday.

Cowell is sticking with Fox, however, producing and judging the not-dissimilar singing competition show “The X Factor,” which the network launches late next year.

Without Cowell’s endless battery of withering appraisals, one wonders how many will bother to continue watching “Idol.”

The only worthy replacement I can think of is Cowell's friend and fellow Britisher Piers Morgan, who won the first edition of “Celebrity Apprentice” and judges Cowell’s “America’s Got Talent” on NBC each summer. If Fox hopes to keep “Idol” rolling, a chowderhead like Diddy is not its answer.

Find the Washington Post’s story on the matter here.

Cowell's final season of "Idol" launches 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Just rebrand American Idol as X-Factor. Not that hard.

    by tall_boy66

You got judges jumping ship left and right after about 10 years. Just turn the AI train into the X-Factor train. Not sure many will notice. Eh, I do watch Idol whenever I can in the early stages (first 3 weeks or so) just cause the people who suck are hilarious. But I heard they toned that down which is lame.

    They can't rebrand

    by vadakinx

The "Idol" franchise, which is worldwide, is owned by Simon Fuller (former manager of the Spice Girls I believe). Cowell started X-Factor in the UK simply so he could own the show himself (he has a stake in Idol but it's Fullers baby so to speak).

    X Factor

    by dude_gimme_tabs

X Factor is a far more superior show, with more categories (Boys 16-25, Girls 16-25, Over 25's and Groups) so a wider appeal.

It is also better because after the auditions each judge gets given a category to mentor therefore it creates a rivalry between categories and between judges.... which includes the possibility of some nasty, dirty voting when it comes to knocking out acts. Yes, it's throwaway pop tat, but it's far more entertaining than the blandness of Idol.

    This makes sense

    by performingmonkey

Axe American Idol before it's popularity wanes. Bring in The X Factor to freshen things up. X Factor has had 6 seasons in the UK so far.

    Cash Cow-ell

He is just doing what he did in the UK. Leaving one show that he is well paid on to launch one that he owns - a simple financial decision. I guess homes in the Caribbean, LA, London, Spain and wherever else isn't enough for him. Yes, X Factor is probably a better show, but this is a shallow, money grabbing move by him

Aspiring porn stars try out for celebrity judges. OK, I know, but I'd watch it.

Thanks for the explanation. I had always wondered what the exact difference between Idol and X Factor were. It will be interesting to see who he picks as his fellow judges. Rumors are that he already has reached out to Paula. The curiosity will probably get me to tune in initially but I stopped watching Idol a few seasons ago.

I feel like a retard for watching every damn season. I don't know why. It's mass-appealing pablum, at best. I don't watch any of the other "talent" crap. Frankly, it reminds me of film school, sometimes, when every few weeks, we had to present a student film, and have it trashed by professors and fellow-classmates, alike. (I was especially pissed by that Spielberg-sponsored filmmaker's crap-shit reality show a few years ago. Though, "Project Greenlight" had some validity.)

SUCKS! Let the show just fade away already. The winner doesn't even become the most famous one anymore. I'd rather lose on American Idol if I were a contestant (but they rejected me because I'm "TOO SEXY", whatever that means).

X-Factor eliminated Pop Idol in UK.

    by jedirob

Could the same happen here? Either way Fox wins I suppose.
