LENO Exits Primetime In Five Weeks!! CARSON DALY Getting The Boot?? Another L&O Series?? Howie Replacing Hoff??

Published at:  Jan 12, 2010 5:55:50 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

“The Jay Leno Show’s” last day in primetime is Feb. 12, newish NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin told the Television Critics Association Sunday.

"I can confirm that starting Feb. 12, 'The Jay Leno Show' will no longer air at 10 p.m.," Gaspin told the assembled journalists. "While it was performing at acceptable levels, it did not meet our affiliates' needs. My goal right now is to keep Jay, Conan and Jimmy as part of our late-night lineup. As much as I'd like to tell you we have a done deal, we know that's not true."

“Leno” is expected to shrink to half an hour and move to 11:35 p.m. following the Feb. 28 conclusion of NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage. Execs want the hourlong edition “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” to follow at 12:05 a.m., but that move is subject to ongoing negotiations with O’Brien’s representatives.

O'Brien's "Tonight Show" contract is said to run another four and a half years, with the host's salary something like $20 million annually. Word is putting "Leno" at 11:35 p.m. violates O'Brien's contract, and once Leno takes over the slot the network would be obligated to keep paying O'Brien for the next four and a half years even if O'Brien quits. NBC might be able to reduce its penalty by allowing Conan to work for Fox or another entity before his five-year "Tonight Show" contract is up.

Gaspin would not confirm that “Last Call With Carson Daly” would stay on the schedule if O’Brien and Fallon agree to the NBC plan.

It’ll be interesting to see how NBC fills its 10 p.m. timeslots between February and June. Lots more “Dateline”? Revive dormant reality shows like “Last Comic Standing”? Bring back “Friday Night Lights” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” early? Many repeats of “The Office” and “Law & Order SVU,” the network’s top-rated scripted series? (There’s much to suggest repeats of these shows would perform better than new episodes of “Leno.”)

Other NBC news:

* "Day One" has been whittled down to one day. The alien-invastion sci-fi series that became a miniseries is now just a two-hour TV-movie that will also serve as a pilot.

* Despite NBC entertainment exec Angela Bromstead's late-2009 comments that suggested the original "Law & Order" would be back for a 21st season, she indicated Sunday that a 21st season for the series was not yet a lock.

* NBC is developing a 7th “Law & Order” spin-off, this one set in Los Angeles. (Prior spin-offs include “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Law & Order: Trial By Jury,” “Conviction,” ITV’s “Law & Order: UK” and reality show “Crime & Punishment.”)

* Howie Mandel will replace departing David Hasselhoff as judge on “America’s Got Talent” this summer.

* Reality show “The Marriage Ref,” originally set to launch March 14, will instead premiere after the Olympics closing ceremonies, a first.

* Oscar-winner Kathy Bates ("Misery," "Titanic," "Six Feet Under") will play the new big boss at Dunder Mifflin, seemingly violating the series' rule about not using well-known actors. And Pam Beasley unleashes Jim Halpert's spawn upon the world in March.

* NBC is developing a conspiracy thriller called "The Event." It was created by a fellow who previously wrote for "The 4400" and "Medium," which makes me wonder if "Event" is secretly a stealth sci-fi concept like "Lost."

* Execs confirmed J.J. Abrams will direct his script for NBC's secret-agent pilot "Undercovers."

I bet it would get surprisingly good ratings if they reran it 1 or 2 nights a week. Gives a lot of the non-scifi crowd a chance to discover what they missed on its original run. And it would probably boost DVD sales too.

    by shabbyblue

If both men take NBC's deal, Leno just gets a pathetic half hour show where he's basically "opening" for Conan's Tonight Show. I can't see him doing a lot with a measly 30 minutes (which is really just 22 minutes if you discount the commercials). He'll barely have room for a monologue and interviewing one guest. No more stupid comedy bits like Headlines or Jaywalking, that's for sure. I may have to tune in for a couple episode just to laugh at how rushed the whole production is when crammed into 22 minutes of airtime.

    by tall_boy66

I find that really interesting, actually. Just that NBC did the math, saw the sub-par numbers they needed to turn a profit, were okay with it, but the local stations were the ones who eventually threw out Leno. Wow. Power to the little guy, eh?

Run Leno at 10 pm on the weekends. It's not like old people do anything on the weekends anyways, so he'll still get his usual ratings. Conan keeps 11:35 Mon-Fri., Jay is buried in the weekends. Problem solved!

    by tall_boy66

No clues, no hints, no indications he may go there, but Fox has tried for 2 solid decades to get a late night show going with some regularity so I get a weird sense Conan may be sick of the shit and bail to a different network. However, in the end, I believe Conan will be a good little NBC boy and stay with "Tonight Show" at 12 AM, but even though the late-night prestige is at 11:30 PM. Well, at least less people will probably watch Jimmy Fallon now. So that's a bonus. Basically, this all boils down to Leno having such an iron-clad contract when he moved to 10 PM that they had nowhere else to put him except back at 11:30.

    Coughlins Laws

    by the funketeer

Leno failed because his ratings were lower than what used to be in his place which made the affiliates mad because they were losing the lead in to their 10/11:00 news programs and were losing money on advertising. A number of affiliates were threatening to drop Leno's show and replace it with something else.

Coughlin - it's all about affiliates

    by jocutus

Leno was doing fine for what the network heads wanted: a decent profit on small production investment and filling a slot 5 days a week (four fewer shows to develop & promote). But that was for the network. The local affiliates were likely very unhappy. They make most of their advertising money on local programming like the nightly 11 o'clock news. Leno was KILLING them. Major markets saw their audiences dropping 35% to 50%. They were complaining to the network about it and probably were threatening not to run Leno, maybe replace him with Law&Order reruns to boost their local news. Or maybe run the news at 10, Leno at 10:30, then Conan, etc. Maybe they were demanding money to make up for lost revenue. Getting late night numbers in prime time is not a great achievement because the late night audience is smaller, and is different demographically, too.

    by jesiah

The only times I'll watch Jimmy if he has guests I like, like Boyz II Men (who did an imo awesome cover of Goo Goo Dolls' Iris). Otherwise I think he's pretty weak, what with his stupid contests between audience members, dressing in drag as a "real housewife." Once skit that was annoying yet cool was when he went underneath the audience seating and there was a little club underneath where puffy was holding a party. It was cool to see underneath the audience seating, but annoying because it had puffy. Anyway I've been a big fan of Conan since the late 90s, I was overjoyed when I heard he was taking over the Tonight Show, and I hope he stays there (at it's regular 11:35 time) and doesnt go to fox.

Nice to see this blow up in the face of the greedy NBC pricks while simultaneously tearing down Leno's nice-guy facade to expose the shady bastard that he truly is. These two deserve each other. Give that self-serving weasel his precious Tonight Show gig back and let Conan go to Fox. At the very least NBC owes O'Brien that for screwing him so hard. I truly hope Conan doesn't puss out, "take one for the team", and settle for following Leno yet again. If he does he's no better than a pussywhipped fool that allows his mate to repeatedly abuse him over and over again.

  • NBC is softening the blow by saying the "affiliates" who are unhappy. Yes it's true that the local news affiliates all suffered because of Leno. But NBC was soon to become the 5th place network if things kept the way they were going and that was something they couldn't take in any shape or form. Jay is damaged goods and will never get the ratings he had before in late-night, he belongs in the Chevy Chase Theater hanging from the rafters with Magic Johnson, Arsenio Hall, Joan Rivers, David Brenner and every other washed-up late-night talk show has-been. Letterman must be laughing so hard he's peeing in his World-Wide Pants. Can't wait to hear Howard ridicule Jay and Stuttering John on Monday.

McHale is funny, but I'm sure a lot of it has to do with good writers. Giving him a talkshow is like when Greg Kinnear got a talkshow back in the 90s. He was funny on Talk Soup too, but it didn't transition well as a regular talk show. I doubt McHale could do better. Like I said before, he's fine right where he is doing The Soup and Community.

I say this is a publicity stunt, but here's what'll happen

    by ricarleite2

Conan will say "fine" to all this, but he will: a) still get his millions, b) do a little more raunchier material and poke fun at NBC, knowing they can't do shit, c) get a gazillion dollars when the leno shit is bumped to later due to sports (he gets a lot of cash if the show starts a second after 12:05), and finally d) After his contract is over, he replaces Letterman on CBS - he should be retiring by then.

Doesn't seem like a publicity stunt to me

    by shabbyblue

There's no way this was planned from the start. It's resulted a LOT of bad press for the network, made them an embarassment among all the other networks, and potentially lost them a lot of money. There's no way the boneheads running that network were secretly brilliant masterminds who came up with a stunt to spin this to their advantage. It was a dumb idea from the start and has sunk the network even lower than it already was a year ago.

Yeah, because Law & Order really needs to be in LA

    by jt kirk

Look, I love Los Angeles. I was born and raised in Hollywood. But this town is the antithesis of the Law & Order series, and LA has seen more than its fair share of cop and lawyer shows, going back beyond Dragnet and Perry fuckin' Mason. (By the by, how the fuck did Ham Burger keep his job as ADA with so many losses to a lawyer who never once actually did any lawyering in the show but always pulled a hail-mary detective gag out of his ass at the last minute instead?) Don't cancel Law & Order, it's pretty good right now, the cast is gelling after too many shakeups the last few years, and the plot lines and interactions are good between both sides, they just need better writers to avoid the obvious L&O twist. You go back to L&O's earliest days and there were straight up cases all the time, some weren't even murder or rape. As for Leno, he's a cunt and if NBC's addiction to his shitty material means blowing Conan off the schedule, they are even stupider than they look right now. Conan needs to be on NBC, it's all they have worth a damn in late night at this point, and I'm counting SNL as "not worth a damn in late night" as its writers keep getting lazier and lazier. Carson Daly and Jimmy Fallon can buttfuck the boozehound crowd fight, nobody wants those shit timeslots, but Carson Daly is at least less of a fuckface about the way he interviews people. Seems like NBC keeps hitching its wagon to the worst talent they can find, then letting them pull that wagon into ravines. Nobody wants musty old leftover reality shows or Dateline NBC. We've all seen enough Chris Hanson intimidating kiddie rapists to last a lifetime. Put some goddamned scripted entertainment on the air again, and if you can't tell the good from the bad, QUIT YOUR FUCKING JOB YOU STUPID ASSHOLE! Sick of these network execs canceling stuff with potential and airing shit that never should have wasted audiences' time simply because they can't tell the gold from the turds. And how clever, a miniseries about an alien invasion, haven't seen that in a few weeks. When did NBC turn into Fox? Fox used to be the one that stole other networks' ideas for a quick buck. And who the fuck thinks Howie will be able to replace Hasslehoff? Howie is a hyper nut who is funny to watch in very short bursts but has no lasting personality. Bottom line: NBC better get their shit together before they go the way of the Dumont Network, which it rapidly seems like they're aiming for.

    by chewtoy

I find it fun that their efforts to be frugal have landed them in a position where they have to pay for 2 expensive late night shows to go up against a single Letterman. Conan's proposed time-slot sucks, as Leno's half-hour will use up a huge chunk of the casual audience that will turn off the TV and go to sleep at midnight, rather than start over with a whole new show that late. Leno gets to ride the nightly news lead in to "success", while Conan will be considered unable to compete with his diminished follow-up audience.
Really, if he wants to advance, Conan needs to try another network. He'll never shake the "not ready for 11:35" label at NBC.

Conan wasn't as funny on the Tonight Show. You could tell he was watering it down in a lame attempt to try and please the over 40 crowd. That crowd just isn't who he appeals to. It's better when he's edgier.

Now he can move to Fox, start at 11, go back to the being the Conan that appeals to the TV demographic that matters (younger audiences) and do so at a time that lets some of his older fans who are now in their late 20's and early 30's watch him again.

Or he can take the money and run while laughing all the way to the bank.

    The New York Post reports

    by american mythos

... that Conan HAS spoken to Fox. I think Conan on that network will spell success. As someone mentioned here (or in the last late night TB), he'll have a 35 min headstart on Letterman and Leno, he'll likely bring better ratings to that slot than the syndicated programming local affiliates are running then, and he'll be able to be edgier ala classic Conan. Even edgier on Fox in fact. And I love Seinfeld, but that was a dick comment on his part. Yes, Seinfeld, there was someone preventing people from watching Conan, as well as NBC primetime -- and he's your friend, Jay. I thought Seinfeld knew how television worked; people weren't watching The Leno Show, so they weren't tuning into the local affilliates' news, so they weren't there for Conan. Some of it is Conan's fault -- he presented a watered down version of Late Night that in the beginning was still too quirky for the old geezer demographic -- and some of it was fate's; the Palin-Letterman blowup really stuck it to Conan, followed almost immediately by the Letterman sex scandal. I like the idea of Conan on Fox. It's a network that has, more than any other network, put on the most forward thinking and landscape-altering programming of the 21st century, from American Idol (love it or hate it, as I do, it's still huge), 24, House, and, in the '90s, The Simpsons and X-Files. Fox is long overdue for a late night talk/comedy show. Keep it in L.A., call it something simple like "Conan Tonight," and bring on the Pimp Bot 5000 and Masturbating Bear!

    by big jim

True, however the "actors" are the out-of-work type who will take minimum wage just to get on TV. As for the "writers" they are actually the producers and the editors, who take the footage they have and craft the performances and stories they want to show. Reality TV may not be real, but it's still less expensive than "scripted" shows (although I still contend that Survivor & The Amazing Race, due to location shooting and logistical support, are right up there, in terms of production costs, with your average courtroom or cop show).

As Big Jim says, the editors and producers form those shows. Mostly the editors. And while editors get paid around $4000.00 a week for reality, that is much cheaper than writers, actors, and directors who get residuals every time a show re airs. That is why you are seeing more reality and less repeats, even of popular shows.

And by the way, reality is not "scripted" (barring The Hills, etc.) but it is manipulated. All in all, it depends on the show. Some are more manipulated than others.

    Tonight Show Legacy

    by cylon_conspiracy

I agree that no matter how this goes down, the Tonight Show starting at 12:05 is no longer the Tonight Show. Its the little things like this that in the long run are actually a big deal to fans. 11:30 is the cherished time slot and to cheapen it is a big deal.

Of course if Conan leaves, then it's back to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, at 11:30.

Conan deserves better. I hope he leaves Fox. He is the Carson of my generation (33) and I'll follow him to a new network.

WTF are they doing? I agree, starting it at 12:05 after a half hour "Jay Leno" show is a joke. What a horrible mess this is. I bet they're just hoping Conan or Fallon quits.

Why not bring back all the shows they cancelled to put Leno on in the First Place starting with Life?

Leno unloaded on NBC in his monologue tonight - why?

    by american mythos

He's getting what HE WANTED. This phony bullshit disdain for the network is just disgusting on Leno's part. He never wanted to leave late night and said in an interview he wanted his old slot back. He got that, and at the expense of an alleged "friend." If Leno treats his friends this way, maybe it's a good thing he never had kids -- they would have grown up under the crushing ego of that twisted fuck and written Daddy Dearest tell-alls. And the more I think about Seinfeld, the more I see what a sellout fuck he's become. Of course he's sticking up for NBC and Leno (he in effect laid all blame for this shit on Conan) -- the network gave him a shitty reality show (The Marriage Ref). He's just sucking corporate dick to shill his wife's shitty ideas. Jerry and Jay have something in common: Their initial successes were cemented on the shoulders of better men (Larry David and Johnny Carson, respectively), and without the coattails of those men they have become shit. Think about it, the most entertaining thing Jerry has done in 10 years was only because Larry David brought him on Curb this season. Before that, the last news Jerry made was defending his wife's cookbook, the idea for which she stole from another person.

I guess stealing from people is all the Seinfelds do these days.

I forgot about that Chief Joseph

    by american mythos

Jerry steals people's wives, his wife steals people's ideas, and Jay steals people's shows. So it isn't surprising that Jerry and Jay are best friends.

People bitched and bitched about Leno

    by eveelcapitalist

Why? So they could have seven nights of Dateline and Seven nights of Law & Order? Fuck them! Who was that one bitch from SVU going on and on about "Oh we're a 9PM show and we work much better there, oh, cock! Schlurp schlurp schlurp..." Shut up and act, bitch. You're still getting paid and people will swallow the worst fucking garbage as long as it's titles Law & Order so don't worry and stop fucking talking. Seriously, five nights of Leno in the evening, so what? Why cancel him then? Why not push up his time to 8/7 and call it the fucking Evening Show? Shit, works for me. Law & Order goes back to 10/9 and Tina Fey's ratings stay nice and high. But of course this idea is far to, what's the word...ah, yes, reasonable for NBC to consider. Fucking company is run by retarded howler monkeys apparently. Or how about this, Jay, Conan and Jimmy all resign. Bad ass! I mean they shouldn't stand for this kinda disgusting treatment on NBC's part. Really, just fucking walk away. Leave NBC with their cock in their hand. Seriously, staying would only validate the shit thinking that NBC management is prone to. Walk away with some integrity guys, there's more money to be made elsewhere. I've been saying Fox needs a 3rd hour of programming, let Jay do 10/9 there and Conan can do 11:30/10:30 after that. Perfect! (Fallon, on the other hand, can go suck in private.) Really, NBC just sucks. Don't encourage more of it.

Yah, Conan cracked wise about it tonight too

    by tall_boy66

But I get the feeling it's kind of forced. He'll stay at NBC and just milk it for a bit.

If anyone should quit it's Leno. Leno is a selfish piece of shit. Conan's statement is right on.

Way to go, Conan! And a hearty FUCK YOU to Jay Leno.

    by spyguy

Only people over 60 and those with no sense of humor whatsoever enjoy Leno. Glad to see Conan's not rolling over while NBC and Leno make their dick moves.

Conan will now join Palin over at Fox

    by starship captain

You can bet that Fox will pick up Conan. Question is, does he get a late night show on the Fox affiliate stations (ala the SIMPSON) or over on the Fox News Channel do they cancel RED EYE as their late night talk show and let Conan take over there...
