Will THE KARATE KID Be THE KUNG FU KID Even If It's THE KARATE KID??

Published at:  Jan 08, 2010 10:13:52 AM CST

Merrick here...

Since the film was first announced, there's been a bit of uncertainty regarding the title of THE KARATE KID remake. Logically, one would think the title should reference whatever discipline Jackie Chan teaches Will Smith's kid in the movie. Evidently, the matter isn't that simple.

MTV spoke with Jackie Chan about the title in an article you can find HERE:

“We just finished the movie, ‘Karate Kid,’” Jackie Chan told me Wednesday at the People’s Choice Awards. “Um, the ‘Kung Fu Kid.’”

Say what? Over the course of the film’s shooting, rumors had leaked that since the film is set in China, the title would reference Kung Fu (a Chinese discipline) instead of karate (a Japanese form of martial arts). But the recent first trailer for the movie ended with a title card that read “The Karate Kid.” Which seems odd, since technically Jaden Smith won't be doing any karate in the movie.

“I don’t know [what it’s going to be called],” Chan admitted of the film, which is due to hit theaters in June. “Probably ‘Kung Fu Kid’ in China and ‘Karate Kid’ in America. Maybe a different title? I don’t know. But mostly we’ve called it ‘The Kung Fu Kid.’”

I hear that the broadest movements of John Avildsen's 1984 original are followed in the new version, but that it's texturally different as a whole. The trailer shows us many familiar elements, though:

If this is really different from the original, maybe they should go with KUNG-FU KID to make the film stand alone/more distinctive? Of course, naming it KUNG FU KID might also make it seem too derivative.

Shrugs.

A PUSSY STUDIO EXECUTIVE IS FUCKING IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by illuminate

Here's the deal. Some pussy wimp of a studio executive decided to go back to "Karate Kid" because he afraid that people won't think that "Kung Fu Kid" is the remake. So, to top it all off the studio executive is a moron as well. It makes no fucking logical sense. Even seven year old kids will be talking about how it should be called Kung Fu kid. Why because they know about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (still on the air) and all the other shit. What a fuck up. Someone should fire that asshole who switched the name back. Not only that it's going to piss off the Chinese as well. What a dumb fuck!

On a lighter note the movie looks better than I thought it would. Jaden is a bit young for the role. However, I will check it out. As long as they take the martial arts to the next level. Machio in part 2 and 3 still looked like an amateur kung-fu fighter especially when comparing to Keanu and Matt Damon.

"open hand" many people don't understand. and as for the movie, it's pretty damn well just a remake, you don't even need a fourth grade education to see that. fuck, its damn near a scene by scene frikkin remake, and they probably will have two different titles, one here and one in Asia, this happens a lot. BUT, if you want the REAL honest scoop on that, and just about anything else, just get ahold of JettL93, i think he and Will Smith were having lunch today or tomorrow to discuss "Hancock 2: The Eagle Has Landed". by jsscript2007

It's North American's that call it Kung Fu. Chinese call it Gung Fu. Which litteraly means "to do something extremely well." It became synonamous with the Shaolin Monk skills. If you're digging a ditch and are doing it perfectly, a person might say.."Your Kung fu is good.". There are many types of kung fu; Northern systems which had money, art etc... they have more flowery techniques and fancy kicks. Southern styles have a no-nonsense approach to fighting, with low stances, few kicks and would use weapons like a farmer's hoe or an axe. There's also internal styles (like Tai Chi), but most are external. The most widely practiced martial art in the world is Choy Li Fut kung fu, which is what Jet Li does and Jackie Chan. Yes, even Bruce Lee did it before he developed is Jeet Kune Do. Choy Li Fut is a combination of animal styles and is regarded as the most vicious and dynamic of all the martial art systems, plus it's been war tested. Wushu is a recent invention made up to preserve techniques from vanishing or little known styles. Now, you pay $5. please.

The idea of the flowing movement is so that one technique and can flow into the next without having to reset for a new strike. And it's also where the Art comes from. It's more difficult to address a fluid attack than a rigid one. That goes for any combat sport.

Sure, it's dated in spots, but I'd show it to my kid today and not feel like a joker. It's a good story, told well. I just hope this remake or whatever it is doesn't completely supplant it. "Take your jacket off" isn't as good as "wax on, wax off," even if that still sounds like a masturbation joke. I mean, they still could have used "paint the fence" and "sand the floor." I kinda liked little Jaden's Rocky Balboa situps though.

I dig yah. You can see that in BJ Penn's fight with Diego Sanchez; Penn looked relaxed as hell, Diego looks as tight as a drum.
But I would be lying if I said I was a fan of a lot of Asian martial arts. I'm kind of in the same school of mind as Bruce Lee who said they were to trapped in tradition and dependent on katas and forms. I'm not saying all styles or teachers, but enough of them where it is a problem.

I agree with you. Forms are good learning and maintaing technique, but it's equally, if not more important to maintain a non-form aspect of the training if you intend to trade fists with an opponent. Some people don't want to get into actuall combat and prefer to learn it as a form of exercise and conditioning and use the forms as competitive way of expression, not unlike gymnastics. If you've ever seen a Chinese gold medal team in competition, you'd go nuts at what these guys can do. Pan Qing Fu was one of the coaches for a gold medal team. Look him up. He's incredible. He was also won of the choreographers of Shaolin Temple.

I've recently had the pleasure of working on some low budget flicks with Georges St. Pierre, Rashad Evans, Heath Herring, Keith Jardine, BJ Penn, Anderson Silva and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
I can tell you first hand, Georges is as real as they get. Super nice guy and the same goes for Rampage. Actually they were all pretty easy to talk with. Jardine and I would eat lunch together frequently. No big ego. And when all the fighters were present at the same time, they got along well.

I know next to nothing about this kid other than what I saw in Pursuit of Happyness and Day the Earth Stood Still. He worked with his dad well in the first and everyone sucked in the other. If he's said and anything stupid or arrogant on TV....well, he's 11. Can't say I was exactly a genius at that age myself. I resent the nepotism angle myself but what are you going to do? It would actually be pretty infuriating if he grew up to be a good actor/asshole. Kiefer Sutherland comes to mind (Love him on 24 but he's a self-indulgent drunk who got a leg up because of who his dad is). It would be easy to swallow him being a crap actor/asshole because at least there's something to ridicule.

If they did it would've been pursuit of happiness (which the kid was good in) and TDTESS (which like you said, everyone sucked in). So where is the hate coming from? Oh i know. Thought process of a AICN Hater: "I don't like Will Smith. He sucks! Oh that kid is Will Smith's son? Oh he sucks too! The end." As far as nepotism goes this kid isn't the first nor will he be the last. Drew Barrymore got by on her family's name for years. So did Gwenyth Paltrow, Nicolas Cage and every Baldwin brother alive. So start with them and THEN work your way to picking on an 11 yr old kid.

Years ago - about '03 or '04 - I worked on a low budget mma movie and met Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, Don Frye and some other old timers (plus Nuetered Man and Choda Boy from Orgazmo); I was already into martial arts, but that got me into mma.
Personally I am much more into the combat side than I am into the spirituality elements. Much more into Sanshou than I am into taolu. It is my personally my goal to become one of the toughest tbers...which really isn't that much of a goal, now that I think of it...

    Personally...

    by yodaismyhomie

...I'm not really looking forward to this. I think it looks silly. The themes won't be as relevant with little kids as they were with the teens in the original. The direction this is going in really seems a little overdone (more so than just being a remake).

However, for a younger generation, it may be fine. Don't tell me that you don't think the 7-12 crowd will like this. Because I can tell you they will love it. Crappy movie it may be, but it will make $$$

...has nothing to do with Jayden but because this movie seems so bloody insincere. Adult beating up kid toughs, called "Karate Kid" even though it's kung-fu, Jackie Chan just picking up a paycheck... honestly, how could this movie be interpreted as anything but as a means to pay off the mortgage on a house in the Hamptons?

Jackie Chan has sold out to the Commies!

    by meta

Ever since mainland China took over Hong Kong, he has been kow-towing to the communist government. Knowing that he's old and his career is winding down, he wants to maintain his importance and status in the region. None of you probably saw how he proudly joined the cast of the Propaganda Film history of Mao Se Tung and the rise of communism in China (to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Government's Reign). So he'll do anything and say anything to keep his money, status and good standing with the Chinese. He also wants Hollywood to give him as much work as possible. So he'll kow-tow to them as well. If Hollywood says "Kung Fu" is "Karate" then he'll happily oblige. Jackie's got to eat.

  • Who was doing a Chinese docudrama about the rise of Shanghai as a international city in the 20's & 30's. He's supposed to be "A Jewish man, who comes to Shanghai to start a new life and build a business for himself and make lots of money (as Jews sterotypically do accordig to the Chinese). Then he rescues a Chinese hooker from a beating, who is so grateful, she gives him a free lay. But after the sex, he's so guilt ridden he prays to his statue of Jesus he brought with him for forgiveness (as all Jews do on a regular basis according to the Chinese). This actor tried to explain to the Chinese director that most Jews do not typically pray to Jesus, as it's not part of the religion. But the director looked at him with confusion and told him, "there must be some Jews that do...so you're just one of those kinds of Jews". So the film went on and the actor got ready for his next scene where he went to Church on Sunday with his now married to hooker-wife and son. And to be honest, almost all of those in China who saw the film probably didn't know or care one way or another. To China, Judaism, Catholicism & Christianity are all the same. And that's just the way Hollywood feels about Karate and Kung-Fu, it's Asian, so it's all the same. And you know what; while you and I will bitch and moan about how culturally insensitive Hollywood is being, most of America won't know or won't give a fuck. I can only hope that this turd-bucket of a film fails so miserably that the word Jaden Smith and actor will never go together again.

    by continentalop

Maybe the problem is that you are an idiot with no comic ability?
And name one classic blaxploitation movie that has the word "Ni**ah" or "Ni**er" in it. They don't. Why? Because blaxploitation was about making films that exploited the fact black people were under represented in film. They made movies that put black heroes on screen that gave them a feeling of empowerment. So they would never have the fucking N-word in the title because it was a derogatory word meant to belittle them, not make them feel "Fuck yah! I'm mother-fuckin' black!" (the only exceptions being Westerns like "The Legend of Nigger Charley" and "Boss Nigger, because audiences knew that black people were constantly given that derogatory label back then and that those films were highlighting America's racist past - but Karate Kid isn't a western or back in the 19th century) So for a blaxploitation fan, you don't know shit about the genre.
Like I said earlier, you should probably have shut up while you were ahead...

I'm at a lost on the hatred against this child.Cause he's Will Smith's son? That's the reason? It's morw to it then that. There are to many actors that have got in the biz DUE TO THEIR NAME. Some are mentioned are and they dont get this kinda hate. It is racist pure and simple for some here. Others like to jump on the badwagon to get a laugh. I find it truly pathetic. I've been on this site for like 10 years and never have I seen a white child actor get this kind of HATE. I've also never have attacked a child. Why Harry accepts this is beyond me. There are morals still in the world and while their is freedom of speech that I love, just for the sake of whats right should some tghings be off limit. Children comes to mind for me.

The use of the word Ni**a is racist. Sorry, but it is. Black guys can use it because, as George Carlin pointed out, they are Ni**ers. Just like gay guys can call themselves fags and cripples gimps. It is hard to get upset when someone else is in the club.
Secondly, why the fuck use that term? Seriously. The only reason to use that word is because Smith's kid is black, and that is a derogatory word for blacks. But once again why is him being black have anything to do with why this film will suck? Nothing. It is just a joke at the expense of his race, which by definition makes it a racist joke/comment.

    by blakindigo

—but you're wrong here. Dreadlock Holmes is attacking Rene's comment because 1.) It's not funny and 2.) His use of "nigga" is specifically targeted at Jayden Smith's race. And generally, the vitriol for this kid seems more exaggerated than just an attack on Hollywood nepotism. Yeah, snark is expected for the onslaught of unnecessary Hollywood remakes, but part of the problem is that when someone says something off colour (ahem), SPECIFICALLY using racial stereotypes (re-titling the movie with a 'faux-blaxploitation' title) to refer to Jaden Smith — a child actor who doesn't showcase an 'urban' or 'hood' persona — they choose THAT word. Somehow the idea behind it's linguistic reappropriation ("street" credibility) is accurate for a privileged, wealthy child actor? In a movie about Kung Fu, er, sorry "Karate" where race isn't the dominant theme? (Sony CHANGE THE TITLE!) Does that suddenly make it funny? Of course not. That's not being "PC"— a valueless term bandied about by folks who generally don't agree that the world they inhabit is multicultural. It's just common sense.

My own homecity is the craddle to my country's hip-hop, and lots of best artists came from here, like DA WEASEL, a group i like a lot. I never had much direct contact with them, but so far, i never had a true complain, even despiste the fact there's quite some criminal activity in my county due to gang-related crimes. And i work in a court of law, in the criminal section. So, you can suck my fat one with your patronizing shit, ok, friend? by blakindigo

I can't comment on why you should or shouldn't like Jaden Smith (it's not really important), but I do need to reiterate what Screwbini wrote above — there are a lot of trolls that come out of the woodwork when anything to do with Black actors and directors is a headline. And, sometimes those trolls get one past the TB's by pure outrageousness or because they need the attention . But the first thing these trolls will post is a useless racial stereotype — suddenly every Black actor is 'typed as a 'thug' to hang their unfunny 'rapper' jokes on, or use hip hop argot to describe a plot point. It's supposed to be ironic, but ends up being a variation on something like this but in print: http://tinyurl.com/yh7c272 You just want to club them like a baby seal…

I fully agree with you that to hate Jaden Smith because of his skin colour is retard, to say the least. I don't like the tyke because he's obnoxious and irritating and seriously limited actor, even for a child, and he has a career solely because of neopotism and nothing else. That's the reason. And this is why retard fucks like Amadeo Zeller are also part of the problem, because they use the racecard in support of their prefered star and uses it agaisnt the detractors. I mean, to use the race card in defense of a black superstar and his tyke kid is racism too. Would anybody use the race card to defend Bruce Willis? He's a white, that's a "race" too, right? You now see the absurdity of that shit? Race card carriers can all kiss my ass, regardless of their race, white, black or blue.

    by sirbiatchreturns

Asimov, I respect your film opinions, but you're sounding racist right now.Whenever I hear the term 'race card', it tends to come out of the mouth of someone racist. I've always hated that term. I guess it's supposed to trivialize charges of racism by just dismissing it as a person trying to get a one-up through... playing cards? Is there a rape card, like 'cry rape'? If a girl cries rape, do you say she's playing the rape card?No doubt there are false charges of rape and racism in the world, but I think they're minimal in comparison to REAL charges of rape and racism, and those occasional false charges don't make the actual suffering experiences less realanyway, pet peeve of mine.

lol, rape is NOT a fucking card!

    by sirbiatchreturns

That's what I'm trying to get at. It's ridiculous and derogatory to even think of a rape card, because that implies that is used like some object to gain access to who knows what.Obviously there are false allegations of rape (or what you would call 'playing the rape card' whatever), but the point is that rape is a VERY real issue, and the number of REAL situations far outweigh the fake ones. But when people mention 'rape card', they imply that real and fake rape are pretty much even and can be called whimsically at the discretion of the individual for personal gain, which is obviously untrue and highly offensive.

It's never the other way round i.e. "I love Will Smith for his blackness and good luck to his black son." lol.So I still don't see your point. and I'm not a fan of the 'race card' word either, as I've already explained.Anyway, all that matters is that Star Trek sucks. lol. Question for y'all: Doesn't the movie seem that much dumber when you watch it at home, and realize all the hype is gone, and you're left with an utter crapfest?

Because I think we outnumber here KFC, on this board and in the USA. And I don't think there has been a history of black people passing laws denying me of my civil rights or that the word has as much power as the "N" word.
Plus, no offense KFC, I could care less if you don't find it offensive - I do. If he called some girl a cunt or bitch just because she's a woman or used the word kike to describe Speilberg, I would say he is an asshole. Sorry, but using derogatory slang to attack someone's race or ethnicity or gender means it is that persons race or gender that is the issue. That is the definition of a bigot. This isn't about PCism, it is about civility.
And back to honky - that doesn't bother me. But if you referred to me as a white devil and meant it, or made a blanket statement about white America like "they are the most racist people on Earth" or "they steal from everybody else" then I iwould probably have a problem with you and say you're a bigot.

Jsscript I think there is room to criticize Jadeen Smith

    by continentalop

How many other kids get their daddy to make a movie for them to star in? That is nepotism at it's worse and most blatant. And even if people say "who wouldn't do that for their children?" it still isn't right.
No matter how it seems like it is harmless, being a child actor is still a job, and Will Smith basically gave a job to someone based on family relation alone. And not getting an oppurtunity in a film can hurt a kid's career, both as a child actor and as an adult. It is like a coach's kid getting the starting job, no matter what. It isn't fair or ethical, and the fact he keeps getting more playing time means he is going to get better while the kid who is unfairly sent to the bench is going to see his skills atrophy.

Continentalop Will Smith is producing the movie

    by ominus

so he can put his kid or whoever wants in the movie as a protagonist.Produce your own movie and put your own kid if you wish.

And 2 other things: else.Nepotism in film industry might be an unfairness for young unknown people who bust their asses to make a carrer, but at least its harmless.
On the other hand nepotism in other aspects of life, like in politics (george bush jr) that is not just unfair, its dangerous.

and the second thing is that in film industry (and in music industry etc) producers and directors and all the big names, they exploit young actresses and actors, they turn them into whores, just to give them the chance to make a career in Holywood.I am pretty sure half of the super-stars have slept with someone just to get a big role or something. This thing is a lot more terrible than nepotism.

I would expect them to go out and cast the best kid actor they could find - besides their son. They should have at least the appearance of fairness and impartiality, but if their son is involved it is an obvious case of bias and nepotism and a conlict of interest between there role as parents and producers..
Kid actors in big movies is big bucks; sometimes hundred of thousands to millions. It is also a way to get a head start over everyone else. We don't accept it when politicians give big government contracts to there relatives and we got upset when Ivy League schools only accepted the upper class WASP, so why should we accept such obvious favoritism from Big Hollywood stars?
And as I said before, I don't hate the kid for this. I don't hate little rich princesses for wanting ponies and expensive dresses, but I do get annoyed with the kid's parent for spoiling her, especially when their prize is at the expense of another kid.

People are busting there as out here for a break. When you give the job to your kid because you are the producers, that means another kid didn't get a break. And if he doesn't get a break, he might never get discovered.
It is as simple as that. You give work to a relative someone else doesn't get the job. And the only way you get better and make it in Hollywood is by working.

Dre Smith is Just a Dumb Nigger

    by kenichi tanaka

I have a lot of respect for Will Smith and even for Jada Pinkett, however, Mr (Dre) Cornrows is just another dumb attempt to ghetto-ize a classic American movie franchise.

This movie is going to flop, even if they continue to call it "The Karate Kid." Oh, and guess what? It has a Hip Hop soundtrack, to boot. This is complete and utter bullshit.

Dre is just trying to profit off the back of his parents and the kid has no talent and no acting skills.

This movie is going to be an abysmal failure. Even Jackie Chan has seen some of his movies released over here that haven't faired all that well and the studio is going to lose money.

Oh, and if anyone thinks that the studio is going to make money from this remake, they have another thing coming because "The Karate Kid" movies and their various sequels have been seen by a very large segment of our population and everyone knows the original movies and most have seen them. Just look at The Honeymooners, which attempted to turn a classic television series into an black urban comedy. It failed miserably at the Box Office. The studio cannot drastically alter the demographics of the movie and that's exactly what they have done.

    by ominus

Because his parents are rich? automatically you dont deserve your own chances in life, because you are in a better position than other unluckier humans?

Besides i think that a parent's role is to help his kid to achieve something in his life, with every way he can.
If your kid studied in film school and he is looking for a job in the film industry, you as a parent wouldnt you use your connections to find a job for your kid there?
i am not talking to tell someone who owes you a favor,to fire someone in order to replace him with your kid.not that.just to find an available job for your kid.
thats the difference. Will Smith is producing his own movie, and putting his own kid.He didnt go to a producer who is making a movie with a kid as a protagonist, and told him: 'hey get rid of that unknown kid,and put mine otherwise i wont work again with you' its not the same, see?

If Jaden Smith is such a draw, why are they keeping the title THE KARATE KID? Because it has name recognition and drawing power: Jaden Smith doesn't.
I think his parents are setting him up to have drawing power (hence why they are featuring his name in the credits) but right now they are gambling that this film will propel his career and make him a star.

Not an aristocracy. We are supposed to reward talent, not allow those with wealth to just purchase a spot for their son. He should be able to do it on his own with all the headstarts he has been given.
And there is only a finite number of films or jobs available. Will Smith didn't put his own money in it, he is just producing it. That means that is money that could have gone for another project that another kid might have gotten, but instead Will Smith is using it to push his son based on blood, not talent.
    That is aristocracy, not meritocracy.

    Calling it the Karate Kid

    by jsscript2007

Let's people know it's a remake of a classic. If they had started with The Kung Fu kid, I think people would have a knee-jerk reaction that it was just a rip off with no good intentions. Now that there is a ton of publicity for the movie and most people are for the name change to Kung Fu Kid, it might be changed. On set, Jackie and others refer to it as Kung Fu Kid. Although, someone mentioned earlier they'e seen a poster with Karate Kid. That's lame, but I guess producers figure most people won't give a shit and will only remember the good experience from the first film, which used Kung Fu (crane stance) and nobody bitched about it. Or at least they didn't have a forum like this to bitch about it. Jaden isn't enough of a draw to open a movie, but he is recognizable. Of course his name is going to be in the credits, even an unknown would have their name in the credits. That's standard. I'm not sure using the words "setting him up" are appropriate, because it implies they hope it will fail, but I agree their intentions are the film will boost his career, why wouldn't they be? They're just laying the foundation for a long career. They know the pro and con for child actors. There's probably going to be a stretch where we don't see the kid for five years.

Yes, if he deserves the scholarship

    by continentalop

But once again, that raises the question of does it look inappropriate and like a conflict of interest. Maybe it is unfair to the scion of the rich donor, but appearances of fairness matter. The rich kid should probably go to a school where his dad isn't the biggest donor so it doesn't look like favoritism. And the kid has been born with so many advantages and given so many opportunities, he should be able to get another scholarship. Plus he still has all of his dad's contacts and connections when he is done.
The poor kid, getting into that school is a life changer.

He doesn't portray the 'street thug' or have mad attitude. So, the 'niggah' comment doesn't apply. It wouldn't be as obnoxious if 50 Cent or Lil Wayne were being referenced (at least not to me). reappropriation of the word is to take back the dehumanizing element and use it as a term of endearment and reframe the dynamics of power the word represents. If I say to a friend "S'up my nigga?" it's a term of genuine respect and affection. It's almost like a proper noun. The recent upswing in the use of the word (last 20 years or so) is a DIRECT result of hip hop culture—you could trace it to "NWA" and "Kool G. Rap" as the most visible examples. It gained more widespread 'acceptance' as underground hip hop became more mainstream. That's why the self described "street thug" spitting "mad attitude" claims the word; it was a stark contrast to the portrayals of Black artists in the 80's who were still trying to prove they were respectable to the mainstream, especially in the Reagan era which dehumanized the Black working class. The working class claimed the word first and you can trace it's rise in popularity with the comparable rise in the 'acceptance' of 'gangsta' street culture into the mainstream.

And people used to accuse Shia LeBeouf for having advantages and neopotism. The dude is nothing compared to what is happening with Jaden Smith. The level of neopotism going on the tyke is one of the worst most shameless case i ever seen in the movie industry since ever. It's very obvious that Will smith and his wife are trying to push his son to be an action star figure and a popular star figure with him barely in his pre-teens. This is a blatant case of the making of a star. and not by the usal means, in which somebody noticed an actor who is unusually talented, pretty or charismatic (or all) and try to push and hype him as a star. No, this is building the star before it even has proved anything as an actor. In fact, one constant complain about Jaden Smith is how naturally unsympathetic he is. The kid cannot shade away his royalty smugness in his acting. They are making him a star when he hasn't evne shown the most basic ability to play a role that is different to his own self. Truly, it's how shameless all this business is conducted that makes me sick.

No, those people are now known because they actually set about to prove for themselves without their daddy's inflçuences. In fact, Keifer became his own man at a time when his dad's star influence already didn't existed since the early 80s,and he was making a living playing supporter roles, his time as a leading man all over. Keifer did his own climbing, which also faced a very low fall, until his resurection in 24.As for Bryce Dallas, read any bio of her, it will tell the same thing: the biggest push her dad gave was to cast her as EXTRA in two of his movies. Her real career, she did it all on her own, and she proved herself with her own real talent. And you know, me praising Bryce Dallas Howard, it's becaus she rerally has the stuff, because by all accouints, she being Ronnie Howard's daughter works AGAINST her, because i fucking hate him and the fucking movies he shits. Bryce Dallas Howard deserves all the accolades she gets because she really deserves them because she truly is talented and deserving. And she actually worked to get them. So there.

The Karate Kid was so much more than a karate movie

    by dasher

With Chan's involvement, I have no doubt that the martial arts will be far superior in this remake. And unlike Miyagi, it seems like his character doesn't give Smith the run-around with what he's learning (notice how the jacket is used in a lesson in one scene, instead of being drawn out over several scenes, like when Daniel was doing Miyagi's housework and didn't realize he was learning karate).

So while we'll see some good fight sequences, I think the quality of this film will depend on the non-martial arts scenes. The original KK was not just about karate. It was a love story, a surrogate father-and-son story, and a coming-of-age story. A lot is going to depend on the performances of Smith and Chan. Smith loses points for believability, since we know he is Will's kid. As for Chan, he may be a great martial artist, but when it comes to acting, he can't hold a nunchuck to Pat Morita.

How many time have I said that if you are rich you are given advantages to begin with? How many times have I mentioned that life is unfair but I can accept that?
My point is, which your small, tiny brain seems unable to fathom, that there some standards that we as a society will accept as appropriate behavior. We always set boundaries and standards. Giving your son a job based on being a relation is not acceptable. Why? Because we are supposed to be a meritocracy, where you are rewarded for talent, not who you know.
I'm not naive enough to think we follow that belief completely or that you will do away with family contacts or some nepotism, but society always sets boundaries about how far you are allowed to go. Sorry, but your father giving you a movie in a profession where people are busting their asses to make it is completely beyond the pale in my opinion. It is unfair and unethical.
And if you can't grasp why that is a problem Rene_Belloq, sorry but maybe you should get out of your mom's basement and try living in the real world.

And just because it is a tradition, doesn't mean we have to accept it. Used to be a tradition that women were chattel and that only rich white men went to college. We got rid of those ideas, why not try to get rid of nepotism?

I actually AGREE with you to an extent. I'd have to take the anger and bitterness out of your, um, 'critique', but yeah you do have a point. My problem with the nepotism angle is that because it's much easier for a star of Will Smith's caliber to open those doors, he could find Jaden a really powerful coach to build his appeal beyond the "Teen Beat" market. As someone mentioned above, I don't think that Tatum O'Neal having a famous father hurt her chances of success (well, discount the emotional violence) and I don't think that should matter to an initial degree. But, you have to be able to carry a movie. Jaden will have to prove that.

But about the specific situation with Smith,it is unfair i agree with that, but you havent yet showed to me why its immoral or illegal for a parent,if he has the means, to produce a movie and put his kid as the lead there.
You may disagree with the other's fortune but you cant accuse him of immorality for having the luxury to get more chances to achieve in life.
And we are talking about nepotism. If Jaden doesnt want to become an actor, but his daddy forces him to follow his footsteps because Will wants to have a worthy heir of his legacy, that is an entire different situation.

    by continentalop

Nor that it should be. Just that it is unethical. And it is unethical because it goes against one of our principles of this country - all men are created equal and all should have the same opportunity. OPPORTUNITY. We obviously don't always live by that concept, but if people don't follow that idea it is still wrong. What opportunity does a kid have to make it in show business if the only way you can get a part is have a famous relative in the business? Should he, and we as society, just say accept it and go back to sweeping the streets?
I mean, what is the difference between nepotism and racism? Really. On one hand you want a certain race to prosper and thrive so you set up things to their advantage because you are part of that race; on the other hand you hand you want your own kin to prosper and thrive because they are related to you and share your genes. It might be more understandable, but it doesn't make it right.
And I am not saying there should be a law, but social pressure does have power. There is no law against being an asshole and saying racist shit, but there is social pressure and that does keep some people in check. If society doesn't accept something, less people will accept it as well. Of course, some people will just say that is PCism, but I say it is fucking civility and understanding that you can't always get your way if you want to function as a society.
And to go back to ethics - if a producer sleeps with an actress for her to get a part, I would criticize him as well. Sure it happens, and it might not be technically illegal, but I would say he is an asshole and a douche (looking at Don Simpsons grave) and just because it happens doesn't make it right.

One of the only jobs like that in town? Does it prevent another kid a chance at a shot at stardom?
There is only a limited number of spots in Hollywood and big budget movies. That's a fact. By making his kid a star he is giving him an advantage that other kids won't have, and he will then get first dibs on all future acting job.
If you gave your kid the head CEO job of your company, I would say that is unethical. If you were the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staffs and promoted your son to General, I would call that unethical. When you put your son as a star in one of the few Hollywood productions made each year, and one that will give him a chance/break other kids can only dream of, I call that unethical.
Like I said early, I am not naive and know nepotism will go on. I also think there is degrees, just like anything. But giving your son a spot in something that hundreds of thousands of kids are trying to get and busting their ass for based on the mere fact that he is your son is fucking wrong.

I merely countered with a list of folks whose been in the business for over 20+ years, and with the exception of a few B.O. hits to their credit, they're still being casted in leading roles, even though over the years, their B.O. performance doesn't justify their continued participation in the Hollywood casting machine....Now can you honestly say that non-white actors/actresses are afforded the same "NEPOTISM/PERKS as the aformentioned? To go by your rationale, Haley Joel Osment or MaCauley Culken never would've been casted, due to their unproven B.O. appeal.

    That's the point Zeller

    by continentalop

Haley Joel Osment earned it. He was an unknown child actors who earned the role.
Jaden might be good, but he has to prove it. And unfortunately for him and his dad they have a little bigger burden of proving that he gets a part fair and square because of who he is.
But like ominus said, life is unfair. In both directions. A coaches kid better be damn good before he gets the starting position unless he wants to hear how he only got it from nepotism. Same applies to movies.
What I am just amazed at is how people can just turn a blind eye to it. Sorry, but shouldn't merit have a big part to play?
And yeah, black actors haven't gotten a fair shake over the years. But you point out obvious racism and I'll support you. It is a little easier pointing out nepotism. That's just a fact. And just because one happens, doesn't make the other any less wrong.

Have practiced nepotism for years and have a closed system to other groups doesn't wash with me. If anything, it hurts black people.
Will Smith comes in and now is just going to act like all the old time white stars and producers. Great for Will Smith and his kids, but it doesn't do shit for all the black kids trying to make it. Why? Because if he is going to go and defend nepotism, there still is more white guys in Hollywood, so a lot more of their kids will get a chance.
If anything Will Smith would be doing a bigger service to black kids - and everyone - by saying "I made it because someone gave me, a kid with no connections, an opportunity. Now I am going to do the same for another person."
I'm not saying he is obligated to that - shit, if he wants he can push his son on us. But I would respect him more if he gave the same chance to others that he got. I mean, I know him and his family got theirs, but maybe he should let another person get a chance instead of just hedging the bets so only his kid gets a chance.

Amadeo Zeller, I think you're confusing the political

    by blakindigo

realities at work. The U.S.A. is a huge country. Really, it's really big. Hollywood historically caters to the majority of the population, creating entertainment and grading on a curve to the lowest common denominator. In America the majority of the people are White. So Hollywood is operating in a matter of practical economic interest. Within that fiefdom (Hollywood) is a pecking order where those who have, fight to stay on top and those who don't have are capitalized on to the benefit of the elite. It's about money. FIRST and FOREMOST.Although many in the industry had brought their prejudices with them to work (D.W. Griffith) societal attitudes changes along with public mores. The old structure has been falling apart for decades and many of those ideas are being challenged. Money is the catalyst. But, now there is an issue about the balance of power — everyone is fighting to gain power within the old system, which we now know is falling apart.By focusing on race as the issue and not seeing it as an example of a red herring, your missing the bigger picture. The film industry usually speaks in generalities, every culture is stereotyped because they need to have a broad appeal to a large country where the majority of the population is White. The problem is that when the stereotypes are applied to People of Colour, they reinforce societal prejudices and unfortunately never redresses those social perspectives, because the point of a movie is not societal change but 'entertainment.'When you have a superstar performer like Will Smith, he transcends the simplistic racial model of a "Black Man" and becomes an "Everyman". He becomes an icon and an ideal. The exception is with people for whom race is so deeply imbedded that they can't see past his "Blackness" and so their criticisms attack what he represents: Rich, Confident, Talent, Black and Intelligent. (You'll notice that all of these descriptions are targeted in their critique of him or his work). His worked isn't judged on it's merits but on his "image" and how comfortable or uncomfortable the critic is with that persona. Your looking at race using an outdated paradigm and trapped by the perceptions inherited by older generations who don't have the fresh eyes to look at it from the present. But nepotism is a reality — it's one of the unwritten rules of the game. This is just one of the most blatant in recent memory, but pales in comparison to Breck Eisner.

As some sort of bigot, but maybe you should go find some earlier post of mine about Eisner's kid or Sophia Coppola, or go find some earlier TBs about other cases of nepotism I've ripped into. I've criticized Gwennyth Paltrow, Jason Reitman and a bunch of others for basically getting a leg up thanks to whose child they are and who they know. So I am being consistent.
And guess what, it isn't isolated. Will Smith is just the latest and one of the most blatant examples. So that is why I am talking about it.
But that doesn't help your argument does it? No, better to try and come up with some strawman about me. Better luck next time, and maybe stay on message about how this is about nepotism and not racism. Of course it is easier to win an argument by just making shit up about your opponent than saying anything with merit.

...never will be, but the beneficiaries and practitioners of blatant nepotism should be shunned and treated with all the condescension that was directed towards minorities and women in the bad old days.I'm not sure how much you can get away with legally...I'm going to start by calling Bush The Younger "boy" from now on...or maybe "sweetheart" or "sugartits" too. He should also have to drink from the kiddie fountain, use the kiddie urinal, and always sit at the back of the bus and get motion sickness......BUT YOU BETTER NOT FUCKING THROW UP ON ME BOY!

Amadeo Zeller, you're an idiot (again)

    by continentalop

How many big budget Hollywood films are made each year? Hmmm? How many? 100 from the studios if you are lucky. How many feature young kids in starring roles? How many fucking child actors are there in Hollywood (or actors period) who would want a chance at a break through performance? And yes, the Karate Kid is a breakout performance - you get that, you might get some name recognition which means you might be cast in future movies. It is a life/career changing opportunity for someone - but that was before Will Smith pencilled in his son's name.
And why wouldn't I put the onus on Will Smith? I put it on everyone, be it Clint Eastwood (for casting his daughters) to Coppola. The reason I am talking about it here is because this is the Fucking Karate Kid TB where WIll Smith is producing the movie starring his kid. I'm not bitching about it in the Avatar Tb because it wouldn't be relevant there.

You're the owner of a football team. You draft your kid and force the coaching staff to start him, even if he isn't the best player for the position, denying someone who has busted his ass his entire life to try and make it. Is that ethical?
And yes, I know fans will stay away because they'll be pissed off, so it never would happen. But maybe if people did that to nepotism in the real world it wouldn't be so prevalent.

You basically brought up the race issue and said that nepotism was just a cover for it. I never once brought up Ghettoes, slums or struggles until you brought that up by saying, I quote "you accusing Will Smith of nepotism is not only comical, but in your pseudo-liberal backhanded (I'M NOT RACIST) way, is just saying/asking: "WHO DOES THIS NIGGA THINK HE IS?" - HOW DARE HE (WILL SMITH) TAKE OUR TIME-HONORED TRADITION OF RACIST EXCLUSIONISM, WHILE CASTING THE LEADS IN HIS PRODUCTIONS, AND USE IT TO HIS ADVANTAGE!" - You mutha' fuckas' slay me with your bullshit and your skewed idea of the status quo."
And I never mentioned it as race based nepotism. I said that it is wrong for him to do it regardless of his race or how white people have done it in the past. But race isn't the issue, the nepotism has always been the issue with me.
Maybe you're getting my post confused with another TBers.

That's all well and good, but it doesn't negate the fact that dispite the politics of "WHITE" nepotism, they are still casting white actors whose under-performance, box office-wise doesn't justify their continued participation in the Hollywood casting machine...So if you're saying their decisions are based on profit and racial demographics, then it would appear their business model is doomed to fail, cuz their customer base (the white masses) are not buying it anymore.

    by continentalop

That was in context to you saying that now he has made it he should be just as nepotistic as the whites who ran Hollywood all those years. My point was what good is that going to do? It doesn't help black people to have one nepotistic actor there helping only his son - everyone else is excluded. No matter what race, but black people are hurt the most because they have the least numbers to help their kids - if only there kids are helped, the numbers don't really change does it?

NO, so it is ethical, just like it is ethical what i did to my example.
If someone wants to get a chance for a career, then there are a lot of other movies, where they can try their luck there.Smith didnt say to the other producers dont take unknown actors for your leads in your OWN movies, take my kid. What he does,he does it to his OWN movie with his OWN money.clear?

    Well, Amedeo Zeller demographics change—

    by blakindigo

    — the business model has to follow the demographic not the other way around and that requires risk and investment. It requires acceptance of competition from other forms of entertainment. It requires vision. What is needed is a 21st Century film executive who is in sync with the rapidly changing tools, toys and demands of the demographic; someone that can intuit the market and build a hybrid paradigm that effectively serves the audience. But the difficulties are immense. An aside: are you suggesting that by "…casting white actors whose under-performance, box office-wise doesn't justify their continued participation in the Hollywood casting machine…" isn't profit driven? The point is that any of those performers could have a break out hit. It COULD happen. That's what they're banking on, because the level of investment (agents, lawyers, accountants, insurance) on those actors is steep, but one hit could pay off. Wouldn't you work with the 'devil you know'? Also, those actors don't have it made — they could lose their advantage as soon as the next big thing shows up and takes their fan base.

    by continentalop

I never said Will Smith is a bad person or that he is evil. I even said I can understand why someone does nepotism - it is a natural instinct. But that doesn't make it right.
Like I said above, it is an unfair advantage to give his son a role in a big Hollywood movie just because he is his son. I would be fine if he just financed an independent movie for his son to get some write ups and experience - I would be oK with that - but despite looking stupid to us guys on the internet, Karate Kid is a big Hollywood production that will instantly get the star of that film notice. That is just to big of handout for me to accept.

That is the investors money. And no there isn't that many movies. Especially big budget, major Hollywood releases (which this is). And if it was a football team it would be unethical. Why? Because you're son didn't earn his spot on the team (and there is only a few pro football teams).
Sorry, but just because you can afford it doesn't make it ethical. If that is the case, why don't we all just buy Indian children to be our sex slaves because their parents would probably be fine with selling them. The all mighty dollar isn't always right.
And once again, I don't say it should be illegal. But I would say that as the owner of that football team you're a fucking asshole.

I know the majority of racists in this TB are feeling that.Continentalop brings up an interesting point about Will Smith engaging in nepotism when he should 'know better' because of his experiences making it from nothing. I agree and also disagree.I believe the Hollywood should be a meritocracy. It benefits the consumer and ups the quality, no doubt about it. The reality? I think it's a mix between meritocracy and aristocracy. And if you were in Will's position, would you really risk your money trying to 'correct' the system instead of getting yours?Think of this. Perhaps you can only change a huge problem like this from the inside, one step at a time. Will can do his stuff with Overbrook and hire black people, etc, but then do major budgets within his family. It ensures his financial stacking and protects his family. As long as he can do this, he can afford to fund lesser projects that give unknowns the chance to rise.I can't call it either way.Good discussion though.

    by continentalop

It is a big Hollywood production one of maybe only 50 the major studios do a year. And people who work on it get jobs - J-O-B-S - that pay them money, including the kid actors. So to just say this is only the Karate Kid and no big deal is misleading and wrong. It is a huge deal for whomever gets the part.
So maybe you should think about the fact that we are talking careers and life changing events here, and not some dumb movie about a kid learning to wax on, wax off. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are at stake and peoples careers could be made. Think about that.

The real issue about this debate is NEPOTISM

    by asimovlives

Nepotism, not race, nepotism. Focus, people, focus. And i do think this blatant case of nepotism will hurt Will smith in the future. If the movie fails at the box office, or even if it suceeds, it will fuel more his enemies. So that if in the future his star falls, they will gangbang on him with ferocity. and they will throw the nepotism stuff he did. Remember how peopel gangbanged on coppola for his casting of Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3? It was public humiliation. This too will happen to Will Smith. In fact, allt his him pushing his son to be a movie star reeks of compelte hubris. Will smith no longer remebers how it was to be a struggling young actor who was born in lesser then favorable conditions. He's now royalty. And he's now giving his prince a bit of kindgom to play at being king. This is dynasty building, but of the most blatant shal«meless type. Even Michael Douglas had to prove and merit his worth before he hit big, his dad's name an hindrance rather then an help. Sofia Coppola gave up acting and became a photogrpaher and a writer/director to leave her father's shadow and her public humiliation. Nicholas Cage needed to made movies outside of his uncle's realm so he could prove himself as his own man, to the point he even shoved a professional name that is different then his own real name (his real name is Nicholas Coppola). Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie, not only changed his name (birthname: Zowie Bowie) but it took him 20 years to finally get him to a place he could make a movie, and find independent financing outside of his dad's influence for his first movie. And before, he made a name for himself as an advert director. While being known as Duncan Jones. Bryce Dallas Howard earned her stardoom because she left her father sshadow and worked her way to show she has talent, she didn't made a career in acting important role sin her dad's movies, she went her own way, stayed away rom his realm of influence, and worked her way into a respected actress away from home, in theater and small independent arthouse movies. The point is that there are many talented people children of talented people. But each of them had to actually proved themsevles their worth outside of their famous parent's shadow. And this is not happening with Jaden Smith. Jaden Smith is being given stardoom on a silver plate. And worst, all this is done without any sense. It's flaunting. It's a slap inthe face for everybody who has worked and busted their asses in their way to reach some modicum of sucess. Jaden Smith's nepotism is indeed very insulting. This is beyond just a dad helping his son. Way beyond that! This is dynasty building. This is the acts of royalty who don't even know what the hoi polloi looks like anymore. This is complete despise and disrespect, and not being affraid or ashamed to show it off. And it's this shamelessness that insults me to the very core of my being.

    The survey says...

    by jsscript2007

Most people are fine with Will casting his son in a movie. And most people would prefer the title The Kung Fu Kid. I do see Continentalop's pov re nepotism and agree it's something to be aware of, but I (or most others) don't see it as an actual problem for anyone. At least anyone involved with the film. As a matter of fact, because Will got this movie going several other chld actors are working and are about to get their big break. Jaden has to battle somebody, doesn't he? How memorable would Luke Skywalker have been without Darth Vader? Who impressed you the most in AVatar? It's not the hero who gets to say memorable things like "Sweep the leg!" What did Ralph ever do that was memorable? The movie will make a lot of cash, Jaden will slowly get his career, but the surprise will be someone new is discovered. If they can last is another thing to be seen. Maybe not here, but maybe in Asia.

    by continentalop

Seriously. Yeah, sure other people will be working, but do you honestly believe this movie couldn't be made WITHOUT Jaden? He isn't a draw; if he was they wouldn't need to stick him in a remake.
And my question to you guys is why do I have to prove what Will Smith did is wrong? Nepotism is wrong. That's a fact. It is something we look down upon if government officials do; we look down upon the concept of inherited titles and aristocrocy here in America. I mean, if we are just going to say talent and ability mean nothing and that you get your position in life based exclusively on who your parents are, why the fuck don't we just install a caste system.

    by blakindigo

—this isn't an 'us' versus 'them' debate. Initially we were talking about the term "niggah" (sic) which was idiotically applied to Jaden Smith, then the debate shifted to nepotism. That's the context — not responding to the trolls spewing racist insults to gain attention.I've got a problem with nepotism when it interferes with the outcome of a movie — Sofia Coppola in "Godfather 3" comes to mind — but, I also think that much of the hostility for this movie comes from the 'remake' factor.Continentalop was being accused of ulterior motives when it's OBVIOUS that he was offended by the 'race-based' joke. AsimovLives seemed offended when someone insinuated that he doesn't like Jaden Smith because of his race. Ominus was debating Conti on the value of nepotism. Dreadlock Holmes, Screwbini, symon and SirBiatch Returns went were challenging the root of some of the hostility towards Jaden and the racial bias suggested in a few of the posts.Note that none of these posts were focused on the trolls, nor did anyone take the bait. Hopefully if you engage in the discussion you won't either. Let's leave the one-dimensional'White/Black' debate to FoxNews.

Justified is better than unjustified. Three people involved in the production have the last name Smith, there are probably no less than two hundred that don't. To say he isn't a draw is unfounded. He has won and/or been nominated for over half a dozen minor awards, inlcuding Phoenix Film Society Critics Awards (best performance by a youth), MTV awards and TEEN CHOICE awards, which means people do know who he is and liked what they saw. I don't agree with your statement "If he was (a star) they wouldn't need to stick him in a remake." The definition of a star can be it's own separate conversation, but I can confidently say that most remakes that come out feature very well known talent. And yes I use the term 'talent' loosely. I'm not asking you to prove what Will did is wrong. There will always be two sides to any line, it's not right or wrong. But if that's the context it's to be weighed in, I would say the pro outweighs the con. Simply put, more good is done than bad. Does the kid have talent? I don't know. I can't say for sure he does not. We've only seen the results of what he can do based on a script and a directors abilities to get what he can in a limited amount of time. And the director's opinion of what's satisfactory doesn't neccessarily have to please us or the kid for the matter. Maybe that's why Will wanted to take matters into his own hand and actually showcase what Jaden can do as opposed to trusting his son's image to something as one dimenstional as TDTESS again. I do believe you when you say Nepotism can be harmful, especially when it can govern society and have a direct impact on a massive amount of public. Jaden's position is harmless.

    by hipshot

His father's name was a hindrance? Are you out of your mind? He knew the agencies, the directors and producers, exactly how to enter into the field...if you don't think Kirk picked up the phone for little Mikey you have no idea at all how the world works. Be as jealous as you want, as angry as you want at nepotism, but don't dare think that this behavior is most egregious in the Smith household. That is flat ignorance or dishonesty.

    by zardozap2005

Right. 12 year old girl assassin goes around killing bad guys is terrible/pedo/wrong, but 12 year old boy fighting and beating up others is somehow ok because he doesn't kill anyone? Give me a break. Talk about double standards based on sex. Last time I checked, the last Karate Kid was a girl. How did that go over? And who gives a fuck who produced this? Is Will Smith supposed to let his kid make his own way in Hollywood? Smith has enough clout, and his own production company to do what he wants. Besides if the movie flops, it flops because it wasn't a good movie. These claims of racism are absurd and pointless. Grow up you losers.

sure this is nepotism...all Jaden wanted for Christmas was a G.I.Joe with a King Fu Grip and his dad instead bought him the rights to the Karate Kid movie. But this does indeed pale in comparison to Breck Eisner...a guy who has shown ZERO skill yet keeps having his name tossed around some potentially huge projects...and it is ONLY because his dad still has a huge amount of power in the business by way of his holdings.

Last thing I'll say about this..maybe. Film is considered to be an art form, just as music is. In music, we have many acts which are family acts and audiences like it. Why can't it be that way in film? It's primary goal is the same, entertainment. That being said, after reviewing the trailer again, I see too much of Jaden performing like a clone of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air character. Maybe Will thinks if it worked for him, it'll work for his son. It could backfire.

regardless, all this conversation is for nothing, because at the end what matters is the actor's (talent doesnt matter) appeal to the average audience which is the ultimate judge. If the audience likes Jaden then he will become a star,if not, then no matter how much money is Will going to spend, his kid will never become a superstar. But who knows maybe he becomes a good director like Sophia Coppola, why not?

    by continentalop

And you can have the run of this board: Where the fuck do I ONLY criticize Will Smith for nepotism? This is the Karate Kid TB, that is why I am bringing up here and complaining about Will Smith committing nepotism here in this TB, but I have railed against a lot of WHITE people's nepotism before, and I actually bring it up here in this TB before the racism label was ever thrown out by you if you were interested enough to look. Did you check to see what I wrote earlier? Fuck no, it is just to easy to throw out the term racist because you're full of shit.
So, you are calling me a racist, for statements regarding nepotism in a KARATE KID TB because Will Smith has cast his kid in a big budget Hollywood film, without checking out if I have been consistent about criticizing nepotism in Hollywood by WHITE performers and stars. That, my friend, is just fucking making up facts and misrepresenting someone. In short, fucking lying.
And on top of all this, after accusing me of being a racist with a racist agenda against Will Smith (despite fucking countless evidence to the contrary) you then throw out an intentionally racist and derogatory remark like Peckerwood at me and others. That makes you a hypocrite.
So let me ask you this, who the fuck is the racist on this TB? Hmmm. Let me give you a hint - go look in the mirror.
You wanna argue against my charges of nepotism and offer a counter argument like ominus is doing, fine, but you wanna make shit up and start labeling people as closeted bigots, than I'm calling out your shit and pointing out the only two obvious bigots on this TB are you and Rene_Belcoq (nice partner you pick).
So I'm waiting for you to apologize for calling me a racist and for throwing out a racist slur at me, but I doubt that will happen. You are only on this TB to get attention and stir up trouble, and the easiest way to do that is just throw out the racist label and to get a chance to insult another group with racist slurs in hopes they'll sink to you're level. Well, not going to happen.
Oh, and I expect you to come back with some sort of witty insult and try to flip it around and say this is evidence I am a liberal bigot. But that doesn't change the simple fact - you are in the wrong and you know it. Or that people can just go back and look at these TB and see what we each wrote. The post above prove who's telling the truth.
So I am actually giving you a chance - keep being a dick who just uses the racist argument because he doesn't have any facts to back his side up and because it gives him an excuse to practice his own prejudice and racism, or look at what you wrote, see that you were completely out of line and be a fucking man and apologize. I doubt it will happen though, because saving face is always more important that admitting what the fucking truth is, isn't it?

SAMBO is a Russian Martial Art. An acronym for the Russian words meaning "Self-Defense Without Weapons." It is related to Judo. You can look it up. Putin practices it, and so does Fedor Emelianenko. Everyone in that TB was throwing around obscure martial arts to be remade as the Karate Kid.
And just so you know, a Dyke is also a levee.
And I love how everyone's favorite insult is to insinuate that someone is a virgin or can't get laid. Sorry, but I come here for debates once in awhile about movies, because I like to do that, but I live a pretty full life. But it is pointless to defend yourself, because like you said we are just anonymous posters. But when you bring up the idea that the other party has to get laid it seems to be like your projecting more than a little...
As for an apology, why not? I'm the injured party. You called me a racist with no evidence. I don't expect one, and I can easily go on living without one, but like I said before people who are wrong apologize. That is what men do - admit when they were wrong. And yes, I have apologized in the past on these TBs many times (GI Joe TB being the last, I think).

    — I think contemporary Western martial arts movies have real challenge, they have to reconcile the philosophical elements and generally give a more grounded choreography unless they're going the way of "Ninja Assassin" and making a balls-to-wall outrageous fantasy. The question is, how do the filmmakers strike a balance and still make it accessible (practice their Horse stance for 4 hours a day — I kid… I kid…)? MMA fights are so intricate and intimate they aren't the most cinematic experiences. What's it like going into the ring against an opponent like Anderson Silva or Fedor Emelianenko? How do you depict the fighter searching for the perfect opening to get the arm bar and then getting the submission? How do you depict footwork and leverage? It's a real challenge…

    The Title

    by hipshot

Again, the title "Karate Kid" is only wrong if it relates to what he is learning from Jackie Chan. If, instead, it is used in context as a semi-insult, like "you've been studying wing chun for months, but when you fight, you're still just a 'karate kid'" relating to what he studied BEFORE he arrived in China (say, a green belt at some strip-mall dojo), the mindset and techniques he has to UNLEARN to learn Wu Shu, then it is actually a clever play on the original title.

The problem with the MMA movies of late is there is such a boon to get the movies pumped out as fast as McBurgers to make a fast buck, they don't really care about serving up something with integrity. And, like you indicated, they don't know how to cover it. For the most part, they just get name MMA fighters and choreograph them fighting in street scenarios with the same old dumb shit and a couple of choke holds thrown in for photo ops. They don't realize that makes about as much sense as making a movie starring famous boxers and not include a boxing ring. Then the movies that do try and use a cage, can not use an octogon and seems they must have the obligatory ugly chicks on the arms of foreigners gambling at some private contest. When the do get to shooting the actual fighting, it looks rehearsed compared to actual fighting so it's a failure.

How many movies are produced with a Black Star?

    by dirk_the_amoeba

Ignoring the past history of Hollywood acting families since the dawn of film passing along their influence and talent, ignoring the family business being passed along since the caveman gave his son a big stick and showed him how to beat the prehistoric poop out of a mountain goat. Ignoring all of that - I ask again, how many movies are produced in Hollywood with a Black star? And for those decrying Smith's so-called nepotism, is it really such a huge dip into the bucket roles doled out each year in Hollywood to non-Black or minority actors (that would be White actors for the slow reading types). How many leading roles at do Blacks or any minority get, so that people have to bitch and moan about one role going to a Black kid?

Dirk, I think the sentiments can be read as—

    by blakindigo

    — 1.) The overall disillusionment of the recent 'remake' craze.2.) The biases of nepotism and the inherent suspicion when applied to a Black superstar (To some posters it's apparently more problematic because of Smith's race).3.) The illusion that any society is truly a meritocracy.Like I wrote before, nepotism only bothers me if it detracts from the film itself. Vanity projects aren't inherently unethical, but as a film goer I'd like not to have the narrative illusion smashed because of a lackluster performance or inadequate direction.Which brings me to Jaden Smith. The amount of critical acclaim he got for "The Pursuit of Happiness" was quite strong; he definitely has potential. This film will test if he has the chops to carry a movie and he has something to prove. Even in a film geared for kids. Now, does it feel like a grabbing for stardom? To be fair, it does. Does that mean he's incapable? Not at all. I don't know the tone the filmmakers are going for and I don't know how demanding his emotional range must be for the movie. But, the film will probably sink or swim based on his charm.

Dirk — it's all about the isms.

    by blakindigo

I agree, it IS in various shades. I stated before that Will Smith is primarily judged by his 'persona' NOT his abilities/achievements. In some comments (not all) that is an undeniable sentiment — and I'm not talking about the trolls here. But, it IS more complex because the main fact is — Hollywood has never had a star like Will Smith; he is the first Hip Hop superstar to reach across the mainstream — That's no small feat. So, the baggage that comes along with it is applied directly to him. And, it's a generational issue to boot; younger people are much less tolerant of 'nepotism' than the older generation where it was considered the norm. The racial angle has another element especially when you look at Will Smith's film output; he's done a number of SF/Fantasy films and after the failure of "Wild, Wild, West," he's accused of decimating classics like "I, Robot" and "I Am Legend". Do yourself a favour and look at the TB responses to those films. The amount of racial catcalling and posturing about how Will Smith (now representing the entity of "Hollywood") is 'destroying' these cherished treasures is revealing. That sentiment is echoed in this discussion, having been sparked by idiotic race based insults about his son's leading debut. So there are a number of forces up to and including the honest reaction of the trailer, the idea of remaking a 'classic' and Jaden's debut lead performance.

From what I've read and heard, "karate kid" is used as an insult by the Chinese kids who beat up Jaden. His character knows karate (how much he knows, I'm not sure), but that does seem to be the movie's starting point. How old is Jaden Smith? He looks 8. Setting it in China with a boy that young destroys the whole "Coming of Age in America" aspect, too. I like Jackie Chan, but this has "turkey" written all over it. I don't see nostalgia for the first one leading to a huge box office on this one, as it basically just throws out all that people loved about the original. The studios only want to market the names of the 80s, not what made them appealing.

The studio execs reocgnize, as does everuyone else, what a winning formula/experience the original Karate Kid was. The follow sequels have been exhausted and paled in comparison. The idea of updating the original story could only succeed if they could increase the drama. If Ralph felt like an outsider going from Brooklyn to LA, imagine how the new kid feels going to China. Thanks to the internet, the world is a lot smaller today than it was when the original came out. Kids today are online with friends around the globe doing battle online everyday. If you've never been to a place where you are a minority and must learn to sink or swim, you might learn more from this movie than how to pick up your jacket.

Way to come up with something completely unsubstantiated and false. First off, maybe you read my earlier post before throwing out such a stupid statement. I name dropped a number of other celebrities who are guilty of nepotism, none of them black.
I'm not saying there isn't racist on this site - oh fuck yeah there is - but to say that every person who doesn't side 100% with a black actor is a bigot is absolute bullshit. Sorry, I'm not a racist (not saying I've never had a racist thought, because anyone who says that is fulll of shit) but I am seeing more evidence of bigotry coming from the Will Smith supporters (especially when you add Rene and glodene to that mix) than I from a lot critics of Smith's nepotism.

In no way is Operator of Continent a racist

    by dirk_the_amoeba

He is a Robinist. Loves him some Robin and Batman. Now, as to the nepotism charge - using my best Trevor Howard voice (and if you don't know the reference tsk tsk) he is 'Guilty!'.
Like I posted yesterday, there are precious few Black Superstars, so having one of thise very few practice nepotism in an industry that is predominantly White, where leading roles for men and women and children go to predominantly White actotrs, does not bther me in the tiniest bit. If Smith can not use his clot to get one measely extar role for a Black actor - especially his own child in an industry that has thrived on doing the same for family members since it's inception, then he does not deserve to be called the worlds biggest star. I have a great deal of respect for the Operator of the Continent, but in this case I think he needs to re-evaluate just why he is opposed. One little role for a Black actor, in a roiling sea of White actors will make little difference and the nepotism charge is truly a piffle. I have very little respect for people who use nepotism as a cover for their racism though. I am looking at you undead writer of the foundation series.

Does anybody seriously think there is hardcore racism here?

    by jsscript2007

I don't. I see failed attempt at humor. I see ignorance. I see people willing to burn a racist remark at the stake. I see a bunch of movie loving freaks who care more about movies from any where in the world, starring anybody from any race or planet. I do see misery loving company and people knowing how to push someone elses buttons, because they can get away with it. Seeing movies is one of the most multi-cultural experiences going. The fact that this site is not unlike the lobby of an unbuilt theater unites us.

To defend Will Smith by pulling the race card...

    by asimovlives

... is racism. Only a racist would see everything in terms of racism. Racism is not just the propriety of the whites. To pull the race card in defense of Will Smith is inseft an actor of racism. I'm sure even Will Smith would be appalled at that.

Asi -Using a racially insensitive remark to describe a child

    by dirk_the_amoeba

Who has done nothing but have the 'fortune/misfortune' to be born into the a wealthy family of actors - really is not racist, is it? Especially when you can suggest that Blacks themselves often use the same word amongst themselves. No, you are not being in the least bit racist or racially insensitive, because you would use similar racially offensive words if it was a Little Jewish child, or a little Italian child, or a little Chinese child, or a little Portuguese child, or a little Spanish child - wouldn't you? Of course you would! You don't begrudge one role and only one role going to a Black Kid, when the overwhelming majority of roles for children go to White kids? No. You do not begrudge one leading role going to a Black actor, when the overwhelming majority of roles go to White actors do you? No. You just hate Will Smith right? Sure that's it. I must have just misread all of those 'N' word comments, or maybe I just did not put it in the proper perspective.

If people use racial slurs to put down Jaden smith, that's wrong. Wrong beyond description. But what is also going around here is Will smith fanatics who sue the race card to put down anybody who doesn't share their high regard toward Will smith. Woe he who does not praise Will smith sky high, or you will be a racist. And frankly, i have little patience for that shit. They are as bad as the racists. They are racists.

He means IN China. The fim will not be a hit AMONGST the people of China, because Jackie Chan will be teaching an American how to beat up Americans. I mean, would Americans rally around a movie about an American coach training the Chinese to beat the Americans in Baseball or Basketball at the Olympics.
Plus in KK2 they go to Japan, not China.

Dirk, my final post on the subject

    by continentalop

Now that I have this forum to myself and don't have to spend time defending myself against ridiculous attacks I can spell out why I hate nepotism.
Nepotism robs us as a people a fair chance or opportunity. If positions of importance or wealth, or assets and material are available for only people related to whomever gets them first, after awhile those assets or positions became almost heriditary. What that does is prevent opportunity for those who are skilled or talented but don't have the family connections - a never ending cycle of certain high status positions and wealth being in the same hands no matter how qualified they are, and exluding others from getting a better life. It becomes an aristocracy, something I abhor.
Now the idea that this is just one little job is also something I dispute - because it isn't a little job. This is the starring role in a movie with a budget of at least $10 million (probably more) and a part that pays hundreds of thousands a dollars. That is money the family of an uknown or up-and-coming child actor can live on, or enough for a college fund. It is also a part that could open doors and lead to more jobs. In short a life-changer.
Plus there really is very few good paying acting gigs available. There is only an x amount of movies being made only offering x amount of jobs (and only few of those gigs pay anything). If there is only x amount of jobs and 1000x many people trying for it, is it fair to just give it to someone because that is your son? And especially if your kid hasn't yet proven himself?
(And I'll be honest maybe Jaden has proven himself. I don't follow kid actors or nickelodean or shit like that so maybe he has proven himself in other projects I am unaware of. But that just goes to show he has enough advantages with his father's money, name, connections, experience and mentoring to not need him to do the Hollywood equivelent of a MTV Sweet Sixteen party).
As for this entire racism debate to be a huge distraction. First the idea that whites have practiced nepotism for centuries and now that some black people are rich and should get a chance to practice it is absurd. If it is wrong, it is wrong no matter who does it.
And I include all the past performer's who benefitted from it.
And this charge that I am against Will Smith practicing nepotism because he's black is just stupid. I don't want anyone practicing it. Also, what would I get out of defending nepotism by Hollywood's elite? My last name isn't Lucas, Coppola, Barrymore or Douglas. Even if these actors have the same skin color as me their success doesn't help me because I don't share their last names or have parents who are well established in the business. Nepotism by whites only doesn't benefit me at all.

I will also add that nepotism hurts minorities. Nepotism and racism has always gone hand in hand - the idea of  hiring someone based on sharing the same genes as you isn't that far from hiring people who only share the same skin color. And usually your relatives and kids will be the same race as you are, so it helps perpectuate racism.
And even when someone like Smith cracks the race barrier, I think him practicing nepotism hurts other blacks. Sure giving the starring role to your so gives a black person a job, but only a black person named Smith. It robs a young unknown black child actor of their chance and a opportunity, and let's be honest Jaden has plenty of advantages as Will Smith's kid that he can still make it even without daddy bankrolling a movie for him.
Now, I will say I have no problem with Mr. Smith making the conscious effort to hire black actors and crew members. They are under-represented in Hollywood and have fewer in-roads in the film business. He's addressing that problem. However, I don't think his son is at quite the same disadvantage as other black child actors.
I would also say that I don't think Will Smith is a bad person and I can completely understand why he would practice nepotism. It is a natural reaction to want to help your offspring    But just because it is natural doesn't mean it isn't wrong. And I also understand the idea if nepotism isn't so clearly defined or black & white (no pun intended). Like everything there is degrees. I would have no problem working with his adult son if he was an established actor; I do have problem with making him the star of a film at a young age without truly earning it. To me that crosses a line.

    by tradeskilz

then when they spar, Jackie Chan tells him out of the blue to 'take off jacket' while throwing a kick and the kid immediately reacts and remove the proverbial jacket and evades the blow. You see, its a homage to wax on wax off, except of course for all that repetetive muscle memory training of course. That shit just isnt cool.

WTF, Why do we need this remake? Is the world of martial arts that hard up for the hollywood spotlight? Now the idea of Jackie Chan as the mentor is interesting to me, probably due to the fact that his recent movies have been shit wrapped up in a bow, (The Spy Next Door? Really, come on. Is it a sequel to The Pacifier? What the hell is it) But I just dont understand the timing of this movie. Red Dawn remake, the timing coudn't be better. Global hostility. Nukes pointed in every direction. It makes sense to remake THAT movie. It remaking the Karate Kid just seems redundant right now.
